I tried to imagine an actor to play the main character Radu and the one that keeps coming to mind is Benedict Cumberbatch. Being a super-natural creature has its advantages after all and not necessarily means one has to be super-evil. Radu’s mother indeed knew her son’s heart since an early age. The problem is, Radu is rather the exception in his own race; others who share the same DNA – if they happen to have that - and background may not be very fond of such a revolutionary among them…I had fun with this book and look forward to the sequel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Blood-Tainted Winter is a Winner By Todd Borg The Blood-Tainted Winter takes its name from a line in the epic medieval poem Beowulf, which suggests its setting in ancient blood-stained lands. Set in the far north and peopled by Norsemen, The Blood-Tainted Winter is the story of Raef Skallagrim, a young man who is about to set off on a life-defining sea voyage, when his father, the lord of Vannheim and possible successor to the king, is murdered. Raef is a classic reluctant hero. Against his desires he’s drawn into the resulting turmoil. Raef doesn’t know who killed his father, nor does he know the reason the man was murdered. But he wants vengeance. The Blood-Tainted Winter is a story of the war that grows in the vacuum of a dead king. It is also a complex tale with dozens of characters spread over a large canvas, lords from many lands jockeying for position and fighting side-by-side with the warriors who’ve sworn allegiance to them. The author T.L.Greylock seems to be a student of medieval war strategy, and I learned a thing or two about fighting with swords and spears from horseback and with knives and axes on the ground, mano a mano. While Greylock’s novel doesn’t feature an appearance of a vicious monster on the scale of Beowulf’s Grendel, the novel is quite violent, and it doesn’t shy away from the realities of war in an era when each warrior carried multiple weapons and didn’t hesitate to use any or all of them dispatching enemies. In addition to burly men who fit our image of brutal vikings, there are also female warriors who are as deadly as any man. Add to the mix a collection of gods and half-gods, some benevolent and some not, wolves and ravens and crows that may or may not be as they appear, a shapeshifter or three and other possibly magical characters, and you realize that T.L. Greylock has done some serious world building. At the end of the book is a list of the characters. I counted 59 of them, which communicates a sense and scope of Greylock’s vision. The Blood-Tainted Winter is not for the squeamish. And while I didn’t find the violence gratuitous, it was dramatic and abundant. Many people die by these medieval weapons. Blood flows and heads roll, sometimes literally. Less plentiful, but still there, were tender moments, touching scenes of friendship and love. There is even the occasional child trying to survive in an epic landscape that provides little if any tolerance for play or delight or mirth. The book is well-written, and Greylock has professional chops. I knew I was in good hands from the well-constructed and unhurried beginning, which is populated with many marvelous sentences such as “Raef let his anger slide away, a silver mackerel in the dark fjord waters not to be forgotten." As violent and dangerous as the world of The Blood-Tainted Winter is, I liked spending time there. Perhaps I was attracted by the beautiful world of snow and ice in a vast land of forests and mountains and lakes not unlike the Sierra where I live. This harsh, elemental place with a hostile climate contrasts with the warmth of men and women with a deep sense of history and friendships. I was also drawn to those moments that reveal the connections and bonds between the characters, the thoughtful and telling dialogue, the strategies of both friends and foes, the feasts cooked over fires and cemented by a celebratory sharing of mead, a honey wine. I found myself worrying over the fate of the characters. And since I finished the book, I’ve often revisited it in my mind and imagined what it would be like to have lived in that time and place. The Blood-Tainted Winter is an atmospheric tale that envelops you like a heavy mist flowing out of the northern forests, its scents as enticing as they are ominous. You will not soon forget the characters, virtuous and evil, the promises of allegiance and the treachery of lies, the sounds and smells of the charging horses, the battles on foot with the spray of sweat and blood, the sharp pain of physical wounds and the longer-lasting scars of betrayal. If you like to spend time in a world unlike any you’ve ever experienced, give The Blood-Tainted Winter a try. You may, like me, find yourself entranced and eager to find out what happens to Raef and company in Greylock’s next installment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. so this was a delight to read By Mike Doubleday This is quite an achievement for a first-time author. This book moves right along and I found myself looking forward to finding out what would happen next. A page-turner! I'm not well-versed in Norse mythology, so this was a delight to read. T L Greylock has a wonderful way with prose, descriptive of the land and surroundings, with some memorable characters developed well. I think this is the first in a trilogy so I'm looking forward to the next installments. Highly recommended!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing and well written! By Amazon Customer An intriguing and well written first book in a trilogy. The fantasy novel takes place in the land of Midgard and the story is steeped in Norse Mythology. The story is full of adventure, sword fighting battles, treachery, raw emotions, unexpected omens, half man-gods, vengeance unfulfilled, yet unlikely alliances, friendship, trust and hope. What's not to like?! I am looking forward to reading the next 2 books!

Frederika and Otis Carney met at a lavish debut party in New Jersey. She was a young woman fresh out of boarding school, enamored of New York’s symphonies and museums. He was a dashing ex-marine just returning to his studies at Princeton University after World War II. Their first dance led to an intense romance and decades of adventure.

Thanks to Otis’s writing career, the Carneys rubbed shoulders with great and powerful media giants, including Jack Webb and Louis de Rochement, who pioneered movie house newsreels. They lodged at the Pillsbury estate and were among the first given access to a new craze sweeping the country—personal computers. Frederika, in particular, found them fascinating.

Despite Otis’s success, however, the two always found time for their true calling—ranching cattle outside Tucson, Arizona. Frederika, a lifelong equestrienne, discovered true happiness on a good horse moving cattle from one pasture to another.

From the bustling sophistication of New York to the simple rural life, Frederika and Otis Carney experienced it all. This is their story, told in Frederika’s own words and compiled from letters detailing the couple’s many adventures.

In 1971, a freedom fight took place between the former West Pakistan and East Pakistan. It involved a fight against the Islamist Pakistani regime by the secular Bengalis, who lived in former East Pakistan. In this nine-month war, it is estimated three million people were killed. Many girls and women were raped by the Pakistani army and their collaborators. Some say these female victims numbered three to five hundred thousand. For the ones that survived, the horrifying events of that time have continued to blight their lives up to the present day.It is sad that, because of complicated global politics, the story of the Bangladeshi war victims has not been heard in the West. This novel is a tribute to these victims, who never had a home or a life after the war.

You have a great narrative style and succeed to bring people alive, to describe horrible scenes convincingly and without despair, always a touch of hope. And then I asked a friend in Bangladesh to read. This was her reaction: "From the vivid description I could really " smell" from the scene an intense pain how our girls/women were supplied to Pak Army from our fellow Bangladeshiis with the Pakistanees". I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Bangladesh, in history, and in how people survive and deal with horrors in their lives. Lisette Luykx, Netherlands

The Spies of Lanikai is a memoir written by Donald Crandell, based on his experiences living on Oahu in the months building up to the Japanese surprise attack on December 7, 1941. His father, Commander Donald Crandell, was the Skipper of the USS Gamble, stationed in Pearl Harbor. They lived in Lanikai among other Navy families, but spent summers on the Honolulu side of the island. Don and his pals were young teenagers, hanging out on the beach on weekends when they weren’t in school. They were not aware that the friendly man with the lovable dog who approached them on the beach was actually a German spy looking for information about their dad’s ships or that Don’s pal Roger was living in a house owned by a family of German spies. The boys heard rumors of war. There was even the story of a Lieutenant vanishing on a hike in the nearby Koolau Mountains, but Don and his pals were busy starting a fishing business and earning good money selling their catch to local housewives. Then disaster struck in the form of a ten foot hammerhead shark which ended their fishing business; and the friendly man with the lovable dog wanted pictures. Sitting on the beach a few weeks later, Don watched a man walking along casting a net into the water. Curious, he approached and asked him what kind of fish he was after. His response made it clear that he did not want any questions. Wary and startled, Don set aside the incident for the time being. It was November and there was still school, but years later this encounter would lead to the writing of The Spies of Lanikai. Six weeks later, on the morning of December 7th, the unthinkable happened. Don recalls the events of that day and of the experiences of families living in Lanikai and the men who were caught in the action at Pearl Harbor. Part Two of the Spies of Lanikai was sparked by the memory of the encounter with the net fisherman on Lanikai Beach. It is the story of Kazuo Sakamaki, who was assigned to pilot one of five midget submarines, armed with powerful torpedos, into Pearl Harbor to sink United States Battleships. He was the only one known to survive that day. He was captured on the morning of December 8,1941 as he swam ashore from his sub which was grounded on Bellows Field Reef, close to Lanikai Beach. He became the first U.S. prisoner of war in World War II. Was he the same man who spoke to Don on Lanikai Beach? Why was he there, and how did he get there six weeks before the attack? How did he end up on Bellow’s Reef? The clues to this mystery are there, and Don Crandell has connected the dots. The book contains photos, maps, diagrams and documents, including first hand, eyewitness accounts from sailors on duty at Pearl Harbor during the attack.

I often wondered how the families and children of Hawaii felt during what took place during this time. Thank you for sharing, I can't imagine how confusing it was for the younger people and I think a little scary. I got the chills with the description of the USA Arizona, my grandfather was off the boat when they attracted. He lost two of his brothers in the attack.Thank you for your story, and that we should never forget. Highly recommended, other children and adults should read this book. Update-I just finished the book. I jumped the gun and wrote my review. Still five stars outstanding piece of history. Hopefully the author will do another book......

By Barry J Hilchey A great personal account of real life espionage in Hawaii in 1941.It is fascinating to look at every day life for navy families at the time. The author has connected his personal memories with well documented historical events such as the mini-subs in Pearl Harbor, the first US prisoner of war in World War II, and log entries from US Navy ships. This is real history... read the book!

An Amazing Story About Strength and Light in the face of Abuse and Darkness By Eliezar Nevies “The Guys Upstairs” is a fascinating testament of the intense life of Amanda Hart.It describes how she was a victim of the most outrageous abuses inflicted upon her over many years - and how she succeeds against all odds, with the help of the Almighty, to retain her inner resilience and determination to rise above her suffering and achieve true excellence in her life. From the beginning the book is riveting: I found it very difficult to put down. She is a model of moving forward in the face of continuous challenges on every level and in every way.Amanda Hart is a huge, powerful, highly knowledgeable and evolved aspiring soul who has been consistently tested, tried and challenged since a very early age. She has come through, well endowed with strong and effective tools that can guide and help others to succeed in their lives. This is whether they are victims of difficult circumstances and/or abuse or whether they are focusing on reaching high goals in their personal or professional lives. Most of all, she has a very big and sincere heart with an enormous reservoir from which to provide love, support, encouragement and prayers for those she is committed to help.I whole heartedly recommend this book.

The mysterious and reclusive genius Moe Norman is acknowledged as the best ball-striker in the history of golf by many of the game’s greats. The Single Plane Golf Swing: Play Better Golf the Moe Norman Way reveals the secrets of the swing that enabled him to hit the ball solidly with unerring accuracy and consistency—every time. Norman’s simple, efficient, and easily understood Single Plane Swing has improved the games of thousands of golfers. Golf professional Todd Graves, known as ‘Little Moe” and regarded as the world authority on Norman’s swing, comprehensively teaches readers the mechanics, drills, and feelings of the Single Plane Swing that Moe called “The Feeling of Greatness.” Graves shares Norman’s brilliant insights and liberating approach to the game and demonstrates why the conventional “tour” swing is too complex and frustrating for the majority of amateurs. Illustrated with more than 300 photographs and written with Tim O’Connor, Norman’s biographer, the book also engagingly tells Norman’s bittersweet life story and explores the teacher-student bond forged between Norman and his protégé Graves.

The Single Plane Golf Swing: Play Better Golf the Moe Norman Way, by Todd Graves, Tim O'Connor

Review ''Moe Norman was an extraordinary man who intuitively developed the Single Plane Golf Swing, which he taught to Todd Graves. Through this wonderful book, frustrated golfers can learn to swing like Moe and improve their games.'' --Anthony Robbins, Best-selling author, America s #1 Life & Business Strategist''Nearly twenty years ago, I asked Moe Norman this question: 'If I were to write a movie about you, who's the person I should talk to about your swing? Moe didn't hesitate. 'Todd Graves,' he said. 'Yep, Todd Graves. When I see him swing, I see me. Yep. I see me'.'' --Barry Morrow, Oscar (Rain Man) and Emmy (Bill) award-winning writer''One of golf's greatest untold stories, Moe Norman's life illustrated a simple and powerful truth: greatness is built from practicing the right swing in the right way. In this book, Todd Graves has given us a blueprint for that swing, for those practice habits, and most of all for a process that builds success.'' --Dan Coyle, NY Times best-selling author of The Talent Code and The Little Book of Talent

About the Author Todd Graves is the world's best-known teacher of the Single Plane Swing, which was developed by Moe Norman, the greatest ball-striker in the history of golf according to many of golf's most respected names. A former player on the Canadian and Asian professional golf tours, Todd became known as ''Little Moe'' for his ability to replicate the swing of Moe Norman. Through his friendship with Moe and their mentor-student relationship, Todd became an authority on Moe's Single Plane Swing and dedicated himself to preserving and enhancing Moe's legacy and teaching his swing. Todd is an archivist of articles, pictures, videos, clubs, and memorabilia that pertain to Moe. In 2000, Todd and his brother Tim Graves co-founded the Graves Golf Academy, the only golf program dedicated to teaching Moe's approach to golf. The academy has taught more than 5,000 students in its golf schools in Florida, Oklahoma City, and around North America. Todd lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Well worth a shot By Amazon Customer If you need a new swing and are getting a little long on years (I be 66) this one works wonderful...I did have to take ONE lesson with a Pro on this swing to work out the misunderstandings but with a little fix this swing gives me my distance back and works as a body controlled swing or a more arms controlled swing (which is a blessing as arm strength trumps body movement as we get older).

It's coffee table type and includes the entire "Moe Norman" single plane swing analysis. What's more significant, however, is how well the theory works. I'm in my 60's and very good physical shape, but with back issues, not uncommon in all golfers, right Tiger ! originally bought the Graves DVD's. Started the year @ 12.6 handicap, went up to 16.8, it took a few months and ended the year @ 6.2, with last 2 rounds at even par ! additionally, can play more rounds with zero back issues, carrying my bag and are longer and straighter with every club in the bag.If you're looking to really improve your game, save your back, this is a great place to start and further look into the Graves DVD's.PS I have absolutely no connection to Graves, their schools, nor any of their products. This review is totally unsolicited.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Best Golf Instruction book that I have ever read. Moe Norman's swing is genius. Well written!! By Happygolfer This book is a must for anyone wishing to improve their golf game. It clearly shows why Moe Norman was the best ball striker ever, but also shows the normal golfer like me how to swing like Moe did. It clearly shows that there is a major difference between all the other swings out there and the Single Plane golf swing, and why the Single Plane golf swing is easier.Once you try the swing you will never go back to the convoluted swing that most people use trying to copy the pros. Even the top pros need instructors helping them on a daily basis. Showing that the swing the pros used can NEVER be mastered. I mastered the Single Plane golf swing in one year of work, and was a better ball striker after just one month of practice then I was after 25 years conventionally.Anybody can learn Moe's simple single plane golf swing and this is FAR and AWAY the best book on the subject, and for anybody wanting to improve their golf game. MUST READ!!

Excerpt from Walter Reed and Yellow FeverA Second edition within six months! I am indeed glad that Walter Reed and his great work have found such a welcome at the hands of his countrymen. It also gives me great pleasure to know that since this little book has told the simple story of his life, the Memorial Fund has grown almost to completion. The second edition will be found to differ from the first in the correction of certain errata which have been pointed out to me, and, more particularly, in the addition of some letters relating especially to the value of Dr. Carroll's work at Camp Lazear and at Las Animas Hospital. Dr. Carroll, Dr. Reed's faithful associate in all his labors, is still with us; in what way will the American Republic show her appreciation of his devoted service?About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ruger and His Guns: A History of the Man, the Company & Their Firearms, by Robert L Wilson

From Publishers Weekly Fans of firearms won't find a more handsome gun book this season than Ruger & His Guns: A History of the Man, the Company and the Firearms. Here, R.L. Wilson (Steel Canvas) offers the definitive history of William B. Ruger (b. 1916) and of the company, Sturm, Ruger & Co., that he fashioned into the world's premier firearms manufacturer. Even non-gun lovers may admire the craftsmanship of Ruger's revolvers and other guns, which gleam and glisten in the nearly 300 illustrations, 185 in color, that complement the text.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal As this volume amply illustrates, Ruger is undoubtedly the most innovative American firearms designer and manufacturer of the latter 20th century and could honestly be described as a living legend in that field. As the subtitle states, this heavily illustrated volume offers a multifaceted portrait of the man and his creations. Ruger built his firearms empire by marrying the old-fashioned with the modern and improved on standard designs by pioneers Colt and Browning to produce high-quality shooting irons at reasonable prices. But along with ingenuity in design, it also took a certain bravery to release single-action handguns and single-shot rifles in a market dominated by double-action and semiautomatic weapons. His gamble, however, paid off. Wilson (Steel Canvas, LJ 1/96) offers much biographical information on Ruger plus the background, history, and statistics for each firearm made by Sturm, Ruger & Co., with numerous superb color photographs. Though this book is pricey, libraries supporting communities where shooting/hunting is popular will want it.?Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Wilson's lavishly illustrated large-format book presents the official history of William B. Ruger of Sturm Ruger & Co. and of Ruger firearms. Dedication to traditional yet innovative designs and manufacturing excellence have made William B. Ruger a legend in the firearms business. Wilson presents how a man's hobby plus a meager investment in 1949 grew within a span of 45 years into an industrial powerhouse, outselling all of its competitors. This is a companion volume to the author's three other popular works: Colt (1986), Winchester (1991), and The Peacemakers (1993). The quality of the hundreds of illustrations is comparable to the other volumes, but in an attempt to capture its multifaceted subject, there are quite a few collage-style photos that contain so many components it is difficult to decipher the individual elements. Extensive reference tables provide serial numbers and years of manufacture for every model produced. A must volume for collections dealing with firearms and business history. Fred Egloff

An Excellent Addition to any Gun Collectors Library By John Matlock In 1949, just after World War II, all of the gun manufacturing companies faced a problem of selling guns in the commercial market. The Government had extensive stocks of guns like Endfields, Springfields, Colt .45's and of course any number of foreign guns and were beginning to sell these guns on the commercial market. It was obviously a stupid time to go into the gun manufacturing business. In 1949 Bill Ruger entered the gun business with one gun being manufactured by a very small company. The gun was the Ruger.22 Standard Pistol which was an instant hit and is still in production as the Mark III. Every few years since then there has been a new gun from the folk at Ruger, each of which has pioneered new design principles that has made nearly all of the guns a success. In this book, R.L. Wilson has produced a masterpiece of a book that describes all of the guns produced by the company as well as a history of the company and the man. It's an excellent addition to any gun lovers library.

WELL-WRITTEN, COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE MAN AND HIS COMPANY, HIS DREAMS AND IDEAS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. IT'S INTRIGUING TO READ THE BACKGROUND OF A PERSON WHO HAS CREATED SO MUCH AND BEEN A PIONEER IN THE AMERICAN FIREARMS INDUSTRY AND, JUST AS INTERESTING, TO UNDERSTAND THE MINDSET AND DETERMINATION AND SACRIFICE IT TOOK TO REACH HIS PLACE IN HISTORY. AND, THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND ART OF STURM RUGER FIREARMS IS FASCINATING. REALLY GLAD I BOUGHT THE BOOK.

Unbreakable: A Navy SEAL's Way of Life, by Thom Shea

Review "Thom Shea's Unbreakable is an action-packed memoir intertwined with a powerful and unique set of lessons on how to lead a more productive life. As a highly decorated Navy SEAL, Shea has viewed life through an optic filled with the harsh realities and brutalities of war, hardship, pain, and death. Over the course of his career with the SEAL teams, he has developed what he calls an internal dialogue. Shea's brilliant writing style provides a very clear description of how utilizing an internal dialogue will provide the reader with a means to greater goal accomplishment and a means to live life at a much higher level of productivity."―Don Mann, bestselling author of Inside SEAL Team Six"I'm a raving fan of Unbreakable. It not only is a powerful story of an amazing human being and his twenty-three years as a Navy SEAL, but it also provides a powerful self-development tool. Let Thom Shea teach you about internal dialogue--what you say to yourself about who you are--and how managing that dialogue can increase your goal achievement and effectiveness in life."―Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and Leading at a Higher Level"Unbreakable is a treasure. Navy SEALs are Americans who lead us from the front. They are the best in the world. Thom Shea and his wife, Stacy, unveil insights into how they not only survived unimaginable challenges, but prospered. Their book is a riveting lesson from their hearts to their children and to all of us. Initially, people will want to read this book out of curiosity, but then they will be knocked out by its message that builds success in every category. Personally, I am so thankful for the Sheas' clear message for all Americans and our free-enterprise system."―Leighton M. Cubbage, chairman of Serrus Capital Partners"Unbreakable is the raw inside story of what it is like to thrive and excel in the margin of war. The parallels are clear in the corporate world, especially for an entrepreneur. Internal dialogue does drive all human performance. If you want to learn what it is to succeed in the margin while maintaining balance with a wife or significant other and family, read Unbreakable."―Carl Stecker, CEO of Net Profit Advisors and Benefits in a Card

43 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Not just a collection of war stories.... By Seth Oestreicher I should start off by saying what this book isn't....It's not slick. It's not like Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor. It's not Chris Kyle's American Sniper. And it's not definitely not Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior. Each of those was penned in part by others. (Patrick Robinson, Jim DeFelice and John Weisman respectively.) And yes, they are all fine books. No, Thom Shea's Unbreakable was clearly written by the man himself. It's a personal memoir, a "letter" to his children in case he didn't return home from battling America's enemies. It must have been incredibly difficult to write. What does a father want to convey to his son about being a man? What does he want to tell his daughter about being a woman, wife and mother? How does he convey why his sacrificing his life with them was not just a selfish act, but one of love for his family, friends and Nation? When reading, you can get the sense that the book was compiled from Thom's writing on bits of paper while riding in the back of a cargo plane or email's back home ,from a dusty base in some godforsaken land. It's why I started by saying the book isn't slick. (It's also why it got four stars from me, and not five - it could have had tighter editing.)But what it is is honest. In an age where warriors are no longer glorified, but looked down upon by the politically correct, this book will be hard for them to read. The truth is, after all, a bitter pill to swallow. And the truth is, we need hard men - warriors - to do bad things to bad people. To read Unbreakable is to get to know who Thom Shea is. A warrior.

Also, this book is written for his kids. I have no problem what so ever of him talking about whacking hajis. Hell, that's what SEALs do. I loved reading about that. My problem is the excessive amount of times he talks about wanting to bang his wife. In all honesty, if I'm one of his kids, I wouldn't be chomping at the bit to read a book where my dad talks about plowing my mom more than 10 times in the first 200 pgs. I get he loves his wife and how her connection to him helped him as a SEAL but come on.

A great life book of rules put in layman's terms, that can change your outlook on life and how to reach goals that you thought unattainable!
