*Not for Children- This is an Adult Fairy Tale* In Fairyville nothing is simple. Not when magic runs as amok as the trolls, fairies and dwarves do. Gretel only wanted to find her brother who’d been traded to the Queen of Hearts. Okay, and maybe find the prince who haunts her dreams. But first she’s got to outsmart a giant, outmaneuver some horny dwarves and survive the sinister plans of a big bad wolf. She isn’t the only one surfing in uncharted territory as both Prince Albert and her brother Hansel run into their own issues. Namely escaping a BDSM loving Queen and some Jinn’s with evil on their minds. Toss in a wise-cracking green donkey with an attitude and an not so old lady living in a shoe and its wonder anyone can get anywhere, much less find their true loves. Even when it seems everything comes full circle, Cinderella finds her Beast... truly transformed into one! Will anything get settled in Fairyville or will the wily wicked continue to cause chaos and prevent any happily ever afters?

This is it! Hansel and Gretel is certainly not a children's story but it is a whole lot of fun! Bobbi Romans has created yet another fabulous story full of humor, twists, and steamy scenes with her own flare.Fairyville is full of all those fun characters from the fairy tales we all remembers as children. Though just like us they have grown up and few of them are a little on the naughty side. But naughty can be fun sometimes right?Hansel finds himself in a mess with the Queen of Hearts. He certainly isn't living the charmed life he had hoped to find with the Queen.Gretel is lonesome and misses her brother. She sets off into the world of Fairyville where she encounters all sorts of characters some good and few evil, some playful and a few she needs to run from.Prince Charming and his donkey are off on an adventure of their own. They encounter a few interesting characters along their way.And as an added bonus we meet Cinderella, her wicked step family, and her beast. Beast is a unique character that is a whole lot more then the name implies. The story is an interesting twist on Cinderella with all the fun that can only happen in fairyville. There is mischief, mayhem, and maybe, just maybe a happily ever after. I always enjoy Ms. Romans' stories she has a unique writing style that is truly her own. I can't wait to see what fun an creative story she has in store for us lucky readers next. I am always beyond excited when I hear she has a new release coming out. I know I am in for a fun read that is going to take me on an exciting adventure.I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Hansel and Gretel -Twisted.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable By The Romance Reviews Reviewed by Gabrielle Sallyfor TheRomanceReviews.comHANSEL AND GRETEL–TWISTED by Bobbi Romans is indeed a twisted story. In fact, if you take most every fairy tale you've ever read, toss them together in a Magic Bullet and then toss it back out, THAT would come close. I am doing my best to avoid story spoilers because you definitely want to experience it for yourself, as it's an enjoyable ménage of characters and stories. As I read it, I found myself either giggling or gasping at each new surprise. When I would try to predict which fairy tale character would emerge next, I got it wrong but was in for a pleasurable surprise each time. There are all levels and varieties of sexual exploration, kink, shenanigans, troublemaking, and eventual coming together of all things scintillating. If you enjoy explosive sexual action in a well-crafted world of all things twisted, then you will definitely want to pick up a copy. It will be a well-spent afternoon/evening of enjoyable reading.Disclaimer: We received the book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

It’s one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to see it in a print copy. Hansel and Gretel–Twisted has just about every fairytale character ever imagined with lots of Romans' classic quirkiness. Escaping from the candy witch, Gretel embarks on a journey where she runs into these characters, including the seven dwarfs. But it’s not the same seven dwarfs you might be thinking of. Romans’ had me cracking up when introduced them by their names. The story moves right along as Gretel meets one person after another while she’s looking for a way to get home, find her brother, and maybe even find her own prince charming.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. is an excellent road map of what a parent should do By Dean (LPW) & Carolyn Armstrong Dr. Rob's latest book, Don't "Should" On Your Kids, is an excellent road map of what a parent should do, and, more importantly, not do, in raising a great junior athlete, and an even better young adult. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, had the privilege of working with Dr. Rob at the University of Notre Dame, and four years later with numerous tournaments won by Ashley and the Notre Dame Women's Golf Team, Ashley is a National Science Foundation fellow with a full-ride academic scholarship for a graduate degree in bio-mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois. Thank you, Dr. Rob, for a job well done, and for putting so many of your tried-and-true techniques for mental toughness and personal pride into a concise guide for concerned parents who want to assist their young student-athletes achieve their full potential.

This is a must read for parents and coaches. As a 30 year coach of a high school, college, and summer exposure teams I've seen first hand pressure athletes are under to perform. I'm also the Division 1 athlete so this book hit home on many points. The authors have set up a plan of success to help parents and coaches that want to relate better to athletes and help increase their performances.-Derrick Williams, Director of Men of the Family Basketball program

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth the read and a good book to pass along to your players' parents By Gregg Scharnagl I thought this book was definitely worth the read. Although I think a lot of what the authors are conveying is common sense, it's always good to be reminded of these things and check yourself and your behavior on the sidelines, in the car and in your interactions with your child athlete. Maybe the examples the authors raise aren't you, specifically, but I'm willing to bet that you can put a name against each example from the parents you share the sidelines with!As a coach, this is definitely a book you want your players' parents to read. Again, they probably won't learn anything new, but they'll be reminded of things that you've either already told them or want to say to them but through the book you can get the point across. As someone who spends a lot of time on the sidelines--sometimes coach, sometimes parent, sometimes just a fan--you'll recognize and relate to much of what the authors are saying. You'll probably want to give a copy to some of the parents you share the bleachers with, and hopefully you can do so without saying, "Here, read this--you're the jerk these guys are talking about!!!" :-)As a parent you'll be reminded that sports are just a game and almost never about life or death. Your kids have to want to play--you can't force them to play--and if it stops being fun for them then they won't want to play any more. It's OK to take a break. It's OK to have an offseason. It's OK to play multiple sports. As parents it's our job to support and keep things positive and know when to stick our noses in or not. Oh, and it's also OK to fail and lose and struggle. Keep reinforcing effort over results and your athlete will be just fine.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I found the booklet comfortable and satisfying to read By Fred I'm not a boxing fan. But, I bought the book because the author was a junior high school classmate. I haven't seen him in decades, but recall that he was quite fond of all sports and had aspirations of becoming a sports reporter. The author's account of Billy Papke seemed to me to have realness and intrigue. For me, that kept the reading at a smooth and anticipatory pace. Except for a bit of repetitiousness regarding characterization, I found the booklet comfortable and satisfying to read. The numerous newspaper clippings and photos are a bonus. Fifteen rounds (chapters) of boxing history! Quite well done Larry.

By Moises Hernandez My mother gifted me this book as I used to be a boxing fanatic in my teenager years. I had never heard of Billy Papke until now. The book is very well written and definitely grasps your attention. It is clear that the author of this book is a boxing fanatic and really took the time to gather facts of Billy Papke. The book illustrates some classic photos, which leads me to think the author really devoted his time and passion to this book. Billy Papke, "The Illinois Thunderbolt", is a book about the life of Billy Papke and his boxing career. Without giving the book away, not only is the narrative about boxing, but also about the twisted life of Billy Papke and his tragic end. I highly recommend this book not only to boxing enthusiast, but also to folks who like some twist and tragedy in the narrative. This book really deserves five stars. It kept me interested and I enjoyed every chapter of the book. Hopefully the author will be writing similar narratives to this one.

Illinois Thunderbolt is an excellent account of an almost forgotten Hall of Fame boxer By Amazon Customer Illinois Thunderbolt is an excellent account of an almost forgotten Hall of Fame boxer. It is brief but informative and interesting. The author is a boxing enthusiast and can be proud of bringing to life the story of Billy Papke. The book is an easy read and is enhanced by a collection of great pictures. Boxing fans will also want this book to get a more balanced picture of the rivalry between Papke and Stanley Ketchel. Prospective readers from Billy's home towns in Illinois (Spring Valley and Kewanee) will have added reason to read this book.

If you like the natural intermingled with the supernatural By Amazon Customer If you like the natural intermingled with the supernatural; if you like the desire to leave home but discover you must return; if you like the darkness of night mixed with the beauty of light, then Reborne offers a plot with glimpses from the past and predictions of the future that keep your mind waiting breathlessly for the next episode. The forces of nature rage as the characters face circumstances controlled by Fate or perhaps by decisions made by ancestors rooted in the past. There is evil among good as humankind seeks to overcome circumstances for which they are not responsible; but, their actions will set the stage for the future. The family unit is important. Appropriate for young adult readers who enjoy a tangled web, this supernatural trilogy must have an epic hero just waiting to rise from the depths of a passionate struggle. Highly recommended.

Ebook PDF Cobra Killer: Gay Porn, Murder, and the Manhunt to Bring the Killers to Justice, by Andrew E. Stoner, Peter A. Conway

In Cobra Killer, authors Andrew E. Stoner and Peter A. Conway tell for the first time in full detail the twisted story of a pair of young, aspiring gay adult film producers whose quest for fame at any cost leads to the gruesome murder of the man who stands in their way, gay porn entrepreneur Bryan Kocis. News of the killing of the forty-four-year-old (stabbed twenty-eight times, his throat slashed to near decapitation) in his suburban home sends shock waves through the bucolic Pennsylvania town. Neighbors were horrified to hear about the murder but equally astonished to learn that Kocis ran a small but thriving online porn operation from his home. The murder investigation leads police and prosecutors to the far reaches of the country, from Virginia to New York City, to Las Vegas, and ultimately to a nude beach in San Diego, where investigators facilitate an incredible clandestine suspect surveillance. The manhunt nets Harlow Cuadra and his lover Joseph Kerekes, both former military men, turned male models, turned hustlers, turned porn producers, who finally land at the bottom of a deadly conspiracy. Cobra Killer takes readers into the sometimes alluring, sometimes dangerous and often surprising world of gay porn and the deceit, schemes, and ultimate betrayals lying underneath the fantasy.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter OneDuring third week of January 2007, Bryan Kocis boarded an airplane in San Diego for a long flight back home to Pennsylvania. He was filled with excitement and hope. It was a trip he had taken many times before over the last several years as his home-based gay pornography business began to grow. He’d found financial success in producing gay porn in the most unlikely of all places – tiny Dallas Township, Pennsylvania – and his company soon rivaled anything being produced in the porn capital of the world: the San Fernando Valley of California. He carried with him on this return flight to Pennsylvania a signed copy of a legal settlement that he thought ended an issue that had nagged him for more than a year. He thought he was nearing the end of a protracted and bitter fight that had brought him scorn and to the brink of arrest on federal child endangerment laws. The settlement settled a lot. But it ended nothing.Five days later, Kocis, 44, was dead, his head nearly severed from his body, his body curled into a fetal position and pierced with 28 separate knife wounds to the abdomen and chest. His body was charred with second and third degree burns that would render him unrecognizable. Police retrieved dental records to identify him. His life had ended on the leather sofa in his living room as his home was reduced to a smoking hull of burned up dreams.Bryan Kocis was dead and the hunt for what had brought such unparalleled violence to Dallas Township, Pennsylvania, was just beginning. The violence that took Kocis’ life would send shockwaves across the community, and ultimately across the country. His murder would reveal more about Kocis than most people ever knew, and even more about an unexpected enterprise operating from a base in stoic, conservative northeast Pennsylvania. As details emerged, first neighbors, then the community and ultimately everyone would know that Bryan Kocis had built a successful gay pornography business from his modest home – an undertaking that may have contributed to his death. His secrets would unfurl for all to see, revealing a complicated conspiracy. There was never any question the investigation into the murder of Bryan Kocis would be a joint effort. Dozens of officers from local, state and federal agencies would be involved, led by the Pennsylvania State Police Major Case Investigation. “Right from the outset we worked with the police and this investigation rested with the state police, as it should have,” assistant district attorney Michael Melnick said.Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Boone, a 15-year veteran, was one of the first to arrive at the murder scene, a simple one-and-a-half story home at 60 Midland Drive at about 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Snow flurries had began to fall. His job: Process any evidence that could be collected from the scene.Boone, a member of the state police’s Forensic Services Unit, took measurements, made diagrams, and captured the scene in photographs and videotape. His first photographs included exterior views that showed intense burning to the front porch and entry to the home, burning so intense the ceiling and roof of the small porch began to collapse before firefighters could extinguish the flames. Outside, two small snow shovels were leaned against Kocis’ BMW parked next to the house. The intense fire had damaged the car, even melting headlamp casings. On the porch itself, a charred wooden bench and the remnants of what appeared to be melted plastic one-gallon gas tank. (2) The front door was burned and charred; the exterior “storm door” melted in place. Neither of the doors showed signs of forced entry. Inside the blackened living room, a portion of the ceiling had collapsed and heavy melting damage had occurred to a giant big-screen TV and entertainment center Kocis had just purchased a few weeks prior as a Christmas present to himself. The room’s picture window was blown out, the metal bar separating the panes dumped onto the sofa below. It was just part of the fire debris that fell upon the sofa, and Kocis’ lifeless body, as the fire raged.“(Kocis is) still lying on the couch,” Boone said in describing the scene. “He’s found lying on his back. This debris would have come down on top of him.”Boone’s photographs showed that most of the sofa’s cushion and stuffing had burned away, the frame being all that remained of the couch. “Mr. Kocis’ body (was) lying here,” he reported.Close-up photos of Kocis’ body showed his severely slashed throat, his skull almost severed from his body, as well as knife wounds to his left chest and abdomen. After Deputy Luzerne County Coroner William Lisman removed the body, and a large pool of blood and other biological fluids remained. As snow showers continued until after 1 a.m. and a slight accumulation began to show, investigators decided to place plastic tarps over exposed areas of the house to preserve all the evidence they could. One long, cold night of investigating was coming to a close, but days of hard work in the Pennsylvania winter lie ahead.Melnick, the assistant DA, got his first look at the scene in the morning light of Thursday, January 25.“It was bitterly cold that day,” Melnick said, recalling that as he stepped under a yellow police line tape surrounding the Kocis home, he was greeted with a stern ‘welcome’ from State Police Detective Steve Polishan who didn’t know Melnick from Adam.Melnick recalls Polishan telling him, “Very nice to meet you. We’ll meet you back at the Dallas Township Police Department.” Melnick took the hint to back off and waited to meet the detectives later in the tiny squad room of the Dallas Township Police Department, just a mile east of the murder scene. It would be two more days before investigators from the District Attorney’s office were allowed in the scene. State fire marshal and homicide investigators spent those two days painstakingly combing the burned rubble of the Kocis home, some detectives down on their hands and knees sifting for clues.Among the pieces of evidence collected by Trooper Boone was “a small little razor blade knife” found underneath the burned love seat. Behind the front door, on a small half-circle table, police recovered Kocis’ untouched wallet, a money clip with $60 cash in it, sunglasses, a pocket knife, and keys to his prized BMW. Police also found loaded handguns stashed throughout drawers in cabinets and end tables in the home. Kocis’ family members would later recover $1,800 in cash left in a kitchen drawer. In the kitchen sink, two long stem wine glasses and a broken wine bottle (damaged in the fire) and cocktail shaker were found.Investigators did not find any fingerprints on any of the items collected. It was no surprise. “Heat is very bad for a latent print,” Boone said. “The latent print is going to be as a result of secretions from the body and the pores of the fingertips.”Boone said the heat destroyed any remaining sweat or oil needed to leave a print from anyone who was in the room before the fire

Petry I remember when all this was happening and once stumbled across the web page put up by the family of one of the killers, Cuadra, in which they claimed his innocence. The language there mirrored much of the language found in the book and attributed to Cuadra. The book is well written in that it is not full of obnoxious value judgments as some true crime books are but it has far too much repetition of material as it if was written as a serial on a web page or in a magazine where it was important to remind the reader of what had passes before. The author allows people to get some idea of the different people in the story and make their own opinions about them. Bryan Kochis does not come out well as a human being frankly but he is not painted as a complete monster by the author but rather as a complex human being. Also the book does not shy away from the criticism of the porn industry but does paint it more fairly than many people do who are not involved in the industry. There are a lot of value judgment made about the people involved in the porn industry and its connection with the world's oldest profession. The truth is the motivations and personalities of the many people involved in the porn industry are as widespread and complex as those in any other part of society. The book does not make the characters here into stereotypes designed to make the reader feel somehow morally superior merely because the people are involved in the porn industry.I was curious about this story because I have a very tenuous connection to Sean Lockhart in that a friend of mine was an actor at another studio when Sean was also working there. My friend did no scenes with Sean but was impressed with his professionalism and all around character. I have also seen some of Sean's work in non-porn roles and he has some talent. I don't think he is ever going to be receiving an Oscar since he is never going to get the types of roles which will allow such to happen but he is comfortable in front of a camera and does a good job in the roles he has had. One wonders what would have happened to him had he been afforded a more decent life as a child and later when he first went on his own.Now that the story is being made into a movie [with the same title as the book] by James Franco with Garrett Clayton playing Sean Lockhart one wonders if the book will see an increase in sales.

Scandal, sex and intrigue in the adult film world By T Informative and impressive book on the life of Brent Corrigan (Sean Paul Lockhart) and his connections to a sleezy and secretive porn producer/film maker. The ins and out of the murderers and their background and what led to a sick crime that still has people questioning today were Corrigan and his lover really involved or not. If you know of this story you will like the precise details.

Porn gossip junkie gives thumbs up to this book By michael stebbins I am a closet-porn-watcher and I had heard about this scandal...and, what a scandal it was. No, it ain't up there with Hemingway and it ain't a book to win a Pulizer, but it hold your interest especially if you 1] like true stories and 2] are into following the lives of gay porn star ... like i am.

Tracy McCain is in for the battle of her life. A diagnosis of breast cancer; a treatment of surgery and chemo. Confronting challenge after challenge — to her health and to her Christian faith — Tracy generously shared her journey with relatives and friends by posting regular entries to a website. Candid, revealing, and introspective, and even humorous at times, the posts became a personal record of this window into her courageous fight. Bridged by new explanatory notes and context, the journal posts became this book about the journey.

“I remember the day Tracy called and told me she had cancer. I was so shocked — of all people to get cancer. Tracy already had enough to deal with: she and her husband Rafe were already fighting a battle to keep life as normal as possible. When the CaringBridge journal was set up for Tracy, I thought this was a wonderful tool to keep up with her and the family’s needs and to know how to pray for her and the family. Each day I would look forward to reading her posts and it became like a daily devotion for me. When you read this book, I know you will be encouraged in your faith too.” — Marilyn Carrell Dallas, Texas

A new and compelling addition to the Journeys & Memoirs Series from QP Books.

By Marilyn Carrell Just finished the book on my kindle but will be purchasing the paperback because I want the author to sign it. Tracy is a friend of mine, but that is not the reason I gave it five stars, this book shows us how God reveals His presence in the worst circumstances. I have known many people that have had cancer, some have survived and some have not but this book takes you on a journey of the battle a person goes through as they fight to live. There is humorous times and if you know Tracy and Rafe that comes at no surprise.

When Tal Smith woke up on the morning of his eighteenth birthday, the main thing on his mind was earning a full ride scholarship at a college somewhere far, far away. That changed pretty quickly. First thing that morning he was kidnapped by the local high school bullies, who then drove him out to the middle of nowhere, before throwing him out of the back of their still moving pickup truck. After pulling the burlap bag off his head, Tal discovered they’d dumped him at some tired, old, beat down gas station out in the middle of absolutely nowhere. When he pulled himself together to start the long trek back home he saw a note addressed to him, taped to the service bay door. Then the Air Hose started hissing at him, and both of the out of order Gas Pumps start ringing up text messages. All of them telling him that he had to go to the Ladies’ Room because worlds (yes, plural) depended on him. So, he went to the Ladies’ Room. When he opened the door he found himself at a place called Hunts School. The students there are in their final year of a hundred year school session, and there are nine teams competing to be the ruler of all of the known worlds (again, the plural) for the next three hundred years. Tal has the recurring problem of a ghoul that hides under his bed and tries to steal his face. He meets a draugr whose primary goal is to kill him (and eat him.) There are also some luscious siren mermaids (also trying to kill him and eat him.) He meets one amazing young woman—who he seems to get sideways with at every turn—so he’s pretty much permanently in the doghouse with her. There’s another really hot girl who’s totally into hooking up with him (she also wants to kill him, but at least she doesn’t want to eat him.) His team helps him make a simulacrum golem (who is him, but not him.) He meets Merlin (well, kinda sorta Merlin) and King Arthur (again, that would be kinda sorta King Arthur.) He learns that whoever wrote all of those old myths and stories totally got most of the details wrong. Everyone’s spelling at Hunts School is completely jacked up, the use of the letter “y” is rampant. Tal is supposed to be Seeking the Center (whatever that is) but it seems like every time he turns around someone says, “your life is forfeit,” or “you’re dead, human.” Which seemed at first to be unnecessarily negative, but apparently might be true. Since at the end of the first term he has to fight to the death for his team to advance to the next Hunt. “Finals,” takes on a completely new meaning for him. Enjoy the Journey!

Characters (do they have good intentions or not By Angie Hopkins Alternating between the earthly world and a magykal reality, Tal battles evil forces with very real consequences to the future of both realms. Heavy weight indeed for someone who just turned eighteen. Drafted into the Omada, Tal assists his teammates in the Hunts in the magykal realm, battling other teams to determine the next leader. All the while, his "golem" goes through the motions of everyday earthly living, trying to keep Tal's life on track in the world he has always known. Characters (do they have good intentions or not....) interact with Tal and his friends in both realms, keeping the reader guessing as to what comes next. A great read surrounding the classic struggle of survival between good and evil. Can't wait for the next installment in the series!

While a story is everything to enjoyment - I've been known to read series that aren't all that well-written if the story is a good one - Scavengyr Hunt benefits from a great use of language, alternating between an advanced vocabulary, and a colloquial one, illustrating the hero's big brain coupled to an unpretentious character. And, not for nuttin', with the world getting uglier by the day (or so it seems) it's energizing, comforting, and inspirational all at once to read about good tryumphyng :-) over evil and the need for us all to "seek the center".

Scavengyr Hunt is full of magic, mythology, adventure, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing. I was swept into Tal's world (worlds?) and was immediately invested in the lives of Tal and the Omada. The characters are well developed and unique (and the ladies are all badasses). Get ready for an adventure full of draugrs, Excalibur, a golem, romance, Greek gods, and so much more.Hopefully the wait for the next Hunt is short since there is so much more I need to know about the Tyrning, the Council, the Folk, and the Traveler.

In the Oneness of Time is an inspiring true story that draws the imagination into its own magical source, where things become possible, and possibilities become things. It grips the reader like a Castaneda/Don Juan tale―for real.Throughout history and in all cultures, authentic diviners have been connecting their communities with real things unavailable to the physical senses and surface mind. Water for wells, healings, on-target meanings for events, wisdom to guide actions, unusual insights of many kinds―the intuitive perception of diviners makes them available.Horden, a gifted contemporary diviner, masterfully unfolds this page-turner of how he discovered this mode of intuitive perception and was trained to develop and use it by a series of highly skilled teachers―a spectrum of extraordinary individuals ranging from a sophisticated I Ching master to Tarahumara shamans in Mexico's Copper Canyon―and a series of down-to-earth-life events and compelling "in-between world" experiences.William Horden is co-author of The Toltec I Ching and author of numerous other books on divination and spirituality.

In the Oneness of Time: The Education of a Diviner, by William Douglas Horden

Review Diviner Horden (The Toltec I Ching) meanders with intent through vignettes of essential moments of learning from a cast of teachers. His graceful storytelling demonstrates his perception that "the entire world is filled with the song of souls moving between lives." Though a few anecdotes concern his formal instruction in the sudden enlightenment school with Master Khigh Alx Dhiegh, he learns from shamans and brujos, cowboys, children, and even sea lions and parrots as he travels from Ohio to Mexico and Australia. These lessons take place in cliffs and ruins, a rainforest and a monastery, a youth shelter and a musician's parlor. The simple dialogue of the encounters feels both mundane and mythic, and Horden also gives his impressions of the "In-Between" world of spirit. Horden's chapters are emotionally complete even when the back story is not fully explained; an extended set of endnotes offers additional information about how he met the people involved, their cultural backgrounds, and occasional supplementary thoughts on the lessons. It is rare to see such a lucid and appreciative summary of a life so well lived, and readers will be inspired not only by the tales Horden tells, but by his example of learning with an open mind and heart. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A life lived, a tale told... with wisdom and grace. By Daryl Anderson Fifty-plus years ago I thought I would be a First-Baseman for the Red Sox. I was just a kid. Reading this book I could not help but remember how, a few years after that, Carlos Castaneda and his “Teachings of Don Juan” gave me similarly grand ambitions. To read Castaneda's narrative was to become slowly ensnared in the certainty that other realities existed; that they could be explored; if one was bold. That was a young man's book – and I was a young man. But to be honest I suppose few truly explored those realms – at least beyond the merely pharmacological. Most of us realized that we were not going to be Shamans. Reading Castaneda one got a sense of the spectacular realms accessible to the few – but little notion of how the lives of the many fit in.This, William Horden's “Education of a Diviner”, is a wiser book, an older man's book. This one weaves a tale of a life of mystery and exploration and does so in a delightful and enriching way. But it does not sprinkle the salt of startling revelation quite as liberally as Castaneda. Horden's story is one of a life lived in many strange realms, but one also quite certainly lived in this one. Now this is not to say that Horden was an accountant who did some divining on the side - far from it! He has truly lived a life steeped in unusual experiences and has built a life that explores and expands his understanding of them. And you will delight in his stories of that life. But in its telling this life seemed to resonate with me even though I lack such experiences in my own life. Just as the right sort of autobiography by a great athlete or artist can leave your own less exemplary talents reminding you that they are still there, still a piece of you, this tale of a life lived in such different ways – in such different places – raised my own sense of my access to those places in myself.Beyond the story and the telling I credit the structure of the book for its power. Horden does not tell a linear tale. He hops spryly around his personal history in short, time-stamped chapters. Back and forth and back again. Weaving a tale in a real sense. Each short chapter is centered around an event or situation in his life (in his “education”) that rings a small bell. By not “telling” his life in linear fashion he invites the reader to piece it together in collaboration with him. By modulating the tone of the different stories – from the stunningly inexplicable to the richly mundane - he also reinforces the message that life is... life. For some, like him, it may include powerful magic and extraordinary experiences, but for all of us that same magic can be sensed glowing around the edges of a moment of weather or a simple interaction with another being. The second structural element that Horden (and perhaps his editors) chose with the wisdom of experience, was to move certain elements of the stories to linked “endnotes”. In this final, substantial third of the book you find background and connection and second thoughts that add much to each of the tales told. These are more than just the extended footnotes found in some books, but if included in the stories would inevitably have diminished them by over-dressing them. I actually was well into the first few stories before I realized that the endnotes existed. Then I flipped back and read some of them and appreciated them. But in the end I decided to choose for myself when to engage with them and when to defer reading them. In this way the reader can indulge a desire for a good yarn but still scratch the “what does he mean by that” itch as desired.Kudos to Larson Publications for yet another wonderful addition to their eclectic list. Thanks to William Horden for sharing this much of himself.

While the chronology shifts around, the lessons learned move straight forward toward unlocking the mystery of being a sensitive human. While the author tells of experiences that are both natural and super-natural, they all nest together into a life story that compels the reader to insist on a more authentic experience of their own. After reading it, I bought 20 more copies to give out as gifts. This kind of inspiration is hard to come by and I want to spread it around.

Direction for difficult times By Joey Madia It is said that, when you are “following your bliss,” as Joseph Campbell would say, or walking the Good Red Road of Native American spirituality, the teachings you most need in the moment will find you. Six and a half years ago, this maxim was made manifest in a book co-authored by William Douglas Horden titled The Toltec I-Ching (also from Larson Publications). When it arrived in the mail with a request for review, I was in the midst of opening an arts education center that would house the social justice theatre company of which I am the founding artistic director. As with any big endeavor, there were endless meetings with political and community leaders, business groups, educators, potential donors, and prospective teachers and it seemed that everyone had a different idea of what the arts education center should be, including its interior design, programmatic content, and even hours of operation.Looking for answers deep within, in order to honor (and protect) the mission of the theatre company and our other arts programs, I found The Toltec I-Ching to be an invaluable aid.A great deal has happened with my arts mission since that time, including closing the center and leaving the state where it was founded, and changing the name of the theatre company, all in part to honor the messages gleaned from The Toltec I-Ching. In recent months, I have begun to lay the foundations in our current home to create new material for the company, hire administrative staff and passionate creatives, and set up classes and auditions. Not long after the process was begun, I received for review Horden’s newest book, In the Oneness of Time. It has proven to be just the guide I needed to find clarity and strength for this new journey.Perhaps, upon reflection, it is more accurate to say this stage of a continuing journey, because this book is unlike any other I have read. It consists of two parts: the first is called Teachings and the second provides Commentary on the Teachings. The interesting thing is that the Teachings are each titled by year, but they are not sequential. At times they are grouped by loose themes, such as geography or stories about specific flora and fauna, although, with each turn of the page, I found my default need to analyze and categorize (to “make sense of”) the structure slipping away, and I increasingly took each Teaching as it came, as its own opportunity for engagement, contemplation, and meditation.Horden’s Teachings vary widely in their content and also in their style (some report the facts, while others are a poetic prose that recalled to me William Blake), although all share a surface simplicity that belies their true depth, leaving the reader to explore as deeply as he or she will. I chose not to read the accompanying Commentary for each Teaching, instead reading all of the Teachings and then the Commentary section. This allowed me to do the good work of engagement, contemplation, and meditation “on my own” and then, when I felt it was helpful, revisit the Teachings after reading the Commentary for each.I encourage you to explore the book however your intuition guides you. I plan on re-reading it yearly, taking a different approach each time. As I change, so shall the methods I use to glean the treasures of the Teachings and Commentary.Although In the Oneness of Time covers many topics, its “spine” or “through-line” as a writer might say, is the bridging of the two Realities: the tonal (“ordinary consensual reality”) and the nagual (“the non-ordinary reality of shamans and mystics”). The methods of moving between them, and of entering the In-Between World, are the most resonant aspect of the book at this point in my focus and learning, and the Teachings reflect the exquisite balance I mentioned earlier that Horden’s writing styles maintain between these two realities. These dual perspectives consistently at work in our lives demonstrate the value of widening the overlap between the tonal and nagual, for this sweet spot of the In-Between World is the creation-space for Meaning and Healing—of ourselves, our immediate community, and our world.Another aspect of the book that has high resonance for me (and why I think it is prominently compared to Carlos Castaneda’s books about the brujo Don Juan Matus) is the wisdom Horden’s teacher passes down about the nature of teaching and learning. Teaching takes time to be absorbed, before the student can go off and become a teacher him- or herself. Rushing the process creates a great deal of mis-learning that then translates into misunderstandings as opinion masquerading as wisdom is (inaccurately) passed on. This is akin to the idea of the 10,000 hours that one must put in to achieve mastery in any area; when Horden’s teacher, Master Khigh, says that he took a vow to wait thirty years before teaching, it reminded me of what the actor Eli Wallach said about learning the Sanford Meisner technique: it takes 25 years. Perhaps that is the time it takes for the ego to recede sufficiently to not mar the process.Alongside such powerful books on the nature of living and dying such as Neil Donald Walsch’s Home with God: In a Life That Never Ends and Elaine Mansfield’s Leaning into Love: A Spiritual Journey through Grief, In the Oneness of Time provides comfort and clarity on the nature of the soul and its experiences on Earth and elsewhere. Horden’s experiences with life after death are highlights of the book. For those interested in this material in a multi-media format, either when deciding whether or not the book is for them, or as value-added after/while reading the book, visit Horden's YouTube channel. In this age of divisiveness, Horden’s message of Communication and Communion is a blessing; it will no doubt illuminate many a reader’s path.
