Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton

Review Tragic novel by Edith Wharton, published in 1911. Wharton's original style and her use of hard-edged irony and the flashback technique set Ethan Frome apart from the work of her contemporaries. The main characters are Ethan Frome, his wife Zenobia, called Zeena, and her young cousin Mattie Silver. Frome and Zeena marry after she nurses his mother in her last illness. Although Frome seems ambitious and intelligent, Zeena holds him back. When her young cousin Mattie comes to stay on their New England farm, Frome falls in love with her. But the social conventions of the day doom their love and their hopes. The story forcefully conveys Wharton's abhorrence of society's unbending standards of loyalty. Written while Wharton lived in France but before her divorce (1913), Ethan Frome became one of the best known and most popular of her works. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher The setting for this piercing New England novel is the aptly named Starkfield, where, despite violently blue skies, the chill of cold and snow seems to have settled in the hearts of its inhabitants. Tethered to his farm, first by helpless parents, later by his querulous, hypochondriac wife Zeena, Ethan Frome ekes out a living. Then Zeena’s cousin, the impoverished and enchanting Mattie Silver, comes to work for them, and Ethan’s hopes and dreams are rekindled. Yet theirs is a forbidden love, constrained by Zeena’s presence. And the impossible intensity in which the three exist will have devastating consequences for all.

From the Inside Flap This edition presents Wharton's two most controversial stories, which she considered inseperable, in one volume for the first time. Set in frigid New England, both deal with sexual awakening and appetite and their devastating consequences. This text includes newly commissioned notes.

People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well. But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife. But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic. If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew."Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

The cold, bleak setting seems so appropriate to Ethan Frome's existence. A life full of obligation and duty, with no hint of joy or spontaneity.Mattie Silver, a cousin of Ethan's wife Zenobia (Zeena) brings a small amount of light and life into Ethan's life. Ethan pays a heavy price for this, as do both Mattie and to a lesser extent Zeena. This is a sad novel about duty, tragedy and mutual obligation. It is not a light read, but it is a wonderful piece of prose that demonstrates that there is a form of beauty in brevity.Highly recommended.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

And Edith Wharton is one of the best. This story takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and also taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. When her cousin, Mattie, comes to help her, Ethan's life changes completely. He falls deeply in love with Mattie. This being the 1800's, he must endure the stifling conventions of that era's society also. There love for each other proves to be a fascinating story.I loved this book. This is a story that will definitely take you away. You'll actually feel you are there. Edith's detail description of the scenery and landscape of that time are truly vivid. I found myself pausing from my reading to look outside to see if it was actually snowing. I highly suggest you find time to read "Edith Wharton's books, you'll be grateful. I certainly was!

So interesting to hear Hayes talk about Coach after he left the public spotlight! Great read with stories that will make you laugh, touch your heart, and feel inspired by Coach's wisdom. Adding this to my Wooden collection!

This is a book that brings to mind over and over again the truth that it's wise to savor the small things, because one day we all look back and realize that they were indeed the big things! The author relates wonderful and funny anecdotes that focus on building relationships, overcoming obstacles of all types, remembering the fundamentals. Coach Hayes has captured the essence of Coach Wooden so well - genuine, humble, loyal, loving, powerfully influential.

Wooden Life Lessons By J & S Excellent read, as a former camper, it took me back to 9th grade and provided wonderful memories of the time I spent at Cal Lutheran training with Coach Wooden. The book takes you through a "week" of camp and paints a wonderful picture of what the Coaches, Counselors, and Campers experienced and the wonderful lessons learned from Coach Wooden.

A butcher knife whistled and crackled through gristle and bone as grandma cut through rabbits and squirrels. Browned, crisped, and mixed with a gravy made from milk, flour, and meat drippings, this was served as the daily feast.

That was 1939 in Depression-era Alton, Illinois, when Ernest R. House was born. So begins Cherry Street Alley, his memoir of a childhood filled with adventures, mishaps, and family sagas.

House endures poverty and a rotating cast of guardians. Born into an extended family, he and his sister are sent to live with relatives after his father dies suddenly and his mother remarries. He recounts stories of coming-of-age in a rough neighborhood of Alton, a former riverboat town along the Mississippi River. Many remembrances are dotted with humor—such as growing up next to a whorehouse and having people mistake your home for it.

There’s violence in House’s outlines of his relatives, including his father’s loving—but criminal—personality. There’s also compassion in a memoir about a family’s struggles to survive.

Told in the style of popular childhood memoirs Angela's Ashes and This Boy's Life, Cherry Street Alley is a book you won’t soon forget.

Thier Reading this book is just like the cover--you sit with a box full of old photos that remind Mr House of snapshots of him past and he reminisces about the ones he selects. Some descriptions are short and unemotional while others are longer and filled with very personal feelings. The author pulls us back to a time and place familiar to the author and, through his telling, closer to us, the readers.

Together Forever is the heartwarming story of a couple—Arie and Rivka Ringelstein—born in Moldova before the Second World War, who braved great hardships to narrowly escape the country as the Nazis sent their friends, family, and neighbors to the Death Camps. Although they were born no more than 64 miles apart, they did not meet until one fateful day years later in Israel when Arie—dashing in his IDF officer’s uniform—rode up on his motorcycle to carry Rivka’s heart away, and to become partners for life. Together Forever proves that love has the power to pull two people together over great distances and time, and bind them tightly together—even beyond death.

Although they were both born in Moldova, less than 100 miles apart from each other -- events leading up to World War II and the Holocaust conspired to keep them apart. Each followed their separate path through Europe, and eventually to freedom. And each eventually found their way to the newly founded nation of Israel, where they became pioneers -- and eventually man and wife. Together Forever tells Arie and Rivka's stories in a riveting and inspiring way, and it also tells the historical backdrop that they and their families were so much a part of. I guarantee you will learn something interesting and new. Their story is heroic, and a must-read for anyone interested in the power of love to overcome even the most difficult of challenges. Highly recommended.

There follows the meeting of the couple and their life together for 50 years - a tale of love, hard work and devotion to each ot By mideast mother I found this book to be a fascinating and touching story about a couple's journey through life. It covers so many aspects of living. It begins with the lives of two normal Jewish families in Europe as antisemitism grew into the Holocaust. It brings home the horrors that happened to ordinary Jews of that time - not only the pervasive prejudice but barbaric acts of violence. It chronicles the courage of these people as they struggled against adversity day after day to get ahead and provide for their families in the build up to Nazism. The number of times they nearly died is extraordinary - they obviously had a purpose yet to fulfil. The challenges of living in the middle of the rages of war are clearly depicted - the impressions that this made on the young - the atrocities they witnessed. This book highlights the courage that both Arie and Rivka demonstrated on their long and separate journeys to Israel, unbeknown to each other, is profound. Arie travelled as an orphaned youth and Rivka with her parents escaping from Romania through a variety of camps and settlements - the journey taking them each a couple of years. We learn of Aries life in an early kibbutz and his career in the new Israeli army and of Rivka's education and the beginning of her career. There follows the meeting of the couple and their life together for 50 years - a tale of love, hard work and devotion to each other and to their families - it is a delight to read.

They are charming, kind, and loving individuals, and yet to read their story opens your eyes even further to the power, dignity, and grace of the human spirit. Meeting them, one would never have guessed the horrors they witnessed, the unthinkable trials they underwent being raised during the holocaust, hiding, losing loved ones, and leaving their homes and families, just to stay alive. The cheerful, beautiful souls I met would did not carry their painful memories as baggage but rather carried an inner light that exemplifies all that is good, beautiful, and true in our human hearts. To read this story is to read a piece of history from the perspective of those who lived it and found love to be a greater power than all the hatred and suffering they once witnessed. This book is a triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the beautiful truth that love is a force so powerful it transcends suffering, persecution, distance, and even the veils between this world and the next. Beautiful, inspiring work.

Lewis This is a rather personal review, in that I am a small part of this story, and it details an extremely sad and stressful period of my life, albeit with a message that is uplifting and perhaps comforting. It can be viewed as an allegory since there is nothing as awesome and terrifyingly beautiful as the flames of a forest fire, the full fury of Nature sweeping its destructive scythe across the most beautiful landscape, and yet somehow, after the fury and horror of its effects, it is Man as a part of Nature who can emerge to continue working, and growing, building and loving, recovering from disaster, and affirming the possibilities and the beauties of Life. Melissa captures that duality in her narration, the devastation of loss, and the promise of rebirth that for me included the death of my mother, and the comfort of her memory in work that one must do to continue, to move positively in the pursuit of what is meaningful. The book is beautifully printed, with pictures, paper, typeface that mirrors the beauty of the story --- her life of Zen contemplation and work being suddenly interrupted by the power of a massive forest fire, threatening all of the mountain with complete destruction. She starts with her identity as a mother of two vibrant young girls and her relationship with leader of the Zen Center. And as quickly as one gets to feel her aspirations, you are interrupted by the reality of the Mountain Fire, a massive forest fire started by a malfunctioning well pump, and growing to one of the biggest in the history of the San Jacinto mountains where the Zen Center had been established over many years of careful and beautiful work. As she and all were evacuated, one senses the possibility of utter and complete loss, yet even as the fire rages, Melissa and her extended family move with a calm determination to do what can be done, to comfort each other, and prepare for what must be. And so, as all watch the possible destruction of the mountain, wait for the results of the battle by Man to direct or mitigate that destructive force . . . much as I watched my mother (Melissa's close friend) in the last days of her life of beauty, and then, after we were able to return to the mountain, note the efforts to recover and rebuild. The pictures that are in the book show the destruction and the beauty. The story establishes the truth that love and beauty can be recovered even in the face of utter loss. And the Zen Center is being rebuilt with the sureness that Life prevails, even after a massive forest fire. And the loss of a dear friend. The story is a love story, and how one must love the Life that can inspire us, in the rocks and trees, in the mud slides, and the heat of a fire, in the efforts and success that hard work can deliver, in the beauty of a painting or a beautiful structure, and even in the death that must claim us all. Thank you Melissa, for this book of Beauty and Love.

A Humorous Tale about Experiences in Rural BC By David Marchant This was a very entertaining book about a couple's escape from Communist Czechoslovakia, their life in a roach and bedbug infested refugee camp in Italy, then a new life opportunity in western Canada. It was a fun read with lots of humorous incidents as they try to adjust to western society and find the perfect place to live, close to nature in the mountains of British Columbia. Lots of interesting wildlife encounters. I bought this book for myself and enjoyed it, so bought another copy for my mother, who has now read it twice.

Truly appreciating Canada By simply1myrn We very much enjoyed reading Nadia's story in which she tells us how, after longing for freedom, freedom of speech and religion, they escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, and the Communist regime. They came to the land of Canada, and among other things were impressed with the freedom, and the beauty of nature, and soon enjoyed living among the wild life, especially the bear! They are an example to us Canadians, not to take all this freedom for granted, but to trulyappreciate all that we have.
