Secret Armies: The New Technique of Nazi Warfare (Classic Reprint), by John L. Spivak

About the Author John L. Spivak (1897-1981), whom Lincoln Steffens called "the best of us" among the many progressive and muckraking writers of America's early 20th century is almost unknown today. Neglect may be due to his ideology. He was a thinly disguised communist and was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Spivak was imprisoned for his alleged libelous writings. Perhaps neglect is due to his many violations of ethical standards in methods of investigation and reporting. Maybe he is not remembered because his investigative passions were spent on independent inquiries that led to sensational books and exposes in leftist media. He was at the center of many landmark cases, issues, and wars in American and international history. Spivak's documentary photography was carried on inside Georgia chain gang camps during the early 1930s. He published several images in Georgia Nigger, a fictional book based on his underground investigations. Spivak claimed that those on the chain gang, primarily African-Americans, were sometimes beaten or worked to death as a result of medieval-like methods of diabolical pain and punishment. Georgia Nigger had great public impact. Spivak's analysis occasionally is eerily relevant to issues raised by Abu Ghraib prisoner/detainee abuses by military guards in Iraq and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Spivak's photography is analyzed within the frameworks of aesthetics theory, visual rhetoric, reception theory, and the historical tradition of documentary photography analysis.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Classic Agitprop By R. Proulx This book might get a good review if Mr. Spivak had published it as a novel instead of as a history book, for Mr. Spivak certainly has a very vivid imagination. This book is almost entirely without citation and you simply have to take Mr. Spivak's word for most of what he writes. This is not to say that there are no elements of truth in the book, for most certainly there are. For example, there was a "Cliveden Set" and of course there were active Nazi agents in South AmericaThe problem is that it is impossible to separate fact from fiction without a tremendous amount of additional research. Even then, it's often impossible because as I have already pointed out, you simply have to take his word for much of what he writes. It is clear, however, that much of what he writes is at the very least, "embellishment." I guess you could generously call this book "advocacy journalism," which of course is an oxymoron. A better word for it would be "agitprop."One of his more outrageous claims is that Nazis secretly constructed vast underground concrete bunkers throughout France, in many cases underneath existing homes, without the homeowners having any knowledge of the bunkers under their feet. Somehow this escaped the notice of the French government and the world press, but not the clever Mr. Spivak. To be clear, all this was supposedly done before the Germans invaded France in 1940. Does that not sound just a bit absurd, perhaps like something out of Jules Verne? What is known about Mr. Spivak? He was a communist, he supplied information to the KGB, and he actively assisted the Soviet Union in its propaganda efforts. Also, he had a very terrible habit of routinely telling tall tales. And lest we not forget, Mr. Spivak was arrested for criminal libel for mis-truths told in this very book.I give it two stars instead of one because it is free on Kindle, and because it is an excellent example for those who wish to study agitprop.

Mr. John gives specific details and gives factual and unbiased opinions. This would be a great book for researching about Nazis in America.

Like the tagline says, this is “the mad misadventure of two English lads crossing America as the Rolling Stones.” The rapscallions in this delightful novel find posing as famous rockers was an aphrodisiac to midwestern girls on their cross-country journey … until facts of their impersonation catch up with them. But there is a prize waiting at the end of this pilgrimage: a slender blonde living in a treehouse. “Mark Howell is a gifted storyteller who will take you through an emotional gamut from laughter to tears,” says Bill Craig, author of the Marlow and Chandler mysteries.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Could have been worse By A Customer Several Wilderness Press books were written by the author or his hunting buddies. The latter is the case with "Western Wings". So it goes without saying that is no classic of upland bird hunting, but rather a loosely organized collection of hunting tales and observations of your average Western bird hunter. Williams does do a good job of describing the behavioral patterns of birds throughout the days and the seasons, and dispels some common myths about prairie gamebirds (e.g. "huns always flush wild in the late season"). You get the impression he knows his bird dogs, although he does does not really delve into the subject. I do have to respect him for NOT including a chapter on pheasants---which he says he hunts "reluctantly". This book is really mostly his personal homage to the vast grasslands of the West, and the grouse, prairie chickens, and huns that make the Big Sky country a bird hunter's dream. It is neither great writing nor informative naturalism, but it's a pleasant book to crack open on a winter's night, when you want to reflect on seasons past.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thank You Mr. Williams for your fine work By Douglas B. Egenolf I found Mr. Williams to be very familiar with the ways of the western birds. Everyone Knows that he prefers to hunt behind Britneys so there was no surprise there. His honesty about shotgun choice was very special and allowed ever person to join in the hunt. Each chapter contains special memories and hunts to add a little spice to the book that not only informs you but entertains as well. I loved the straight forward writing with no extra sugar added.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful story By R.A. Russell I let some minutes pass after I finished reading Domnall and the Borrowed Child, sitting in my comfortable chair and letting time pass, because I wanted to keep thinking about the world I’d inhabited during my reading. That world had come alive for me in a way that can only happen when the places and characters are so beautifully drawn that it seems I’m leaving a familiar and long-loved place when I close the book in my hands. I’d been down in the story, living in the aftermath of what had been for the fae a great war that, coupled with the encroachment of more and more humans, was forever changing the boundaries of their world. This aftermath is seen and experienced through an aging Domnall, who mourns the loss of the fae’s previous freedoms and room to breathe, even while he trudges on, doing his duty. “There was a time when I thought I could change the world….Now I’m just trying to keep things the way they were.” Along the way, Domnall witnesses a human woman’s terrible predicament and helps her escape what would have been a sad fate. With some adventures along the way, of course. This lovely story reads as a standalone, but I’m hoping it will continue.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun little read By J. L. Jamieson After the war with the Sluagh, so few brave fae are left. Those that are left in the council are overly cautious and know little of the past. When one of the children fall ill, this leaves the task of finding a human mother to feed the child precious healing mother's milk to Domnall. His knees creak and his joints ache in the cold, but Domnall isn't about to let the child--or his people--down. He knew leaving a changeling was dangerous, but who knew it was such a confounded production? This is a fun little fairy tale about passing on wisdom, and learning that even if you think you're getting old, you've still got a lot of trouble left to get into.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Warm and fun tale By Happy Reviewer Domnall is a cranky old faerie, the last of the experienced scouts. So it's his job to do... well, everything difficult, it seems, while the youngsters hide safe back in the Sithein, protected by a council that thinks the world is too dangerous.Domnall's tale unfolds with adventure, danger, irreverent humor, and a touch of melancholy. It's a quick, fun read, even for someone like me who doesn't know the least bit about Scottish Fae. My only stumbling point was on pronouncing some of the names, and there's the beautifully done audio version available too. (Sample available at the tor.com site.)Overall, highly recommended if you're looking for a pleasant, engaging diversion.

The book is very informative, inspirational and also funny at times. Being a mom of a diabetic child myself (now he's 22 years old) makes me feel that I am not alone out there. Great read :)

Diabetes Book for the Whole Family, Clergy, Friends, and Social Workers By Gregory Jackson This is an excellent book for all members of the family, for friends, for interested clergy and social workers. I highly recommend this for anyone. The technical literature is difficult to absorb. This is a a down to earth treatment by a family all too aware of the challenges of childhood diabetes. Trina Gunzel was one of my most creative students in 12 years of teaching at the University of Phoenix. Since finishing her MA in education she has published two books already. My wife and son both use insulin to control their blood sugar, so I have been through the stages of shock, frustration, and needing to know more. We have all taken diabetes awareness classes at the local hospital near Walmart headquarters. Ironically, my wife worked with Joan Fassler at the Yale University Child Study Center. Fassler's work was in writing books for children to help with various problems, such as illness and grief. Dr. Fassler would be proud of this effort, and we are happy to commend it to others to share, share, and give as gifts.

The author is heartfelt, honest, and informative as she shares her experiences about her son's diagnosis and how their lives changed and evolved as they learned to live with Type 1. I had the honor to get to know her and her lovely family, and they are truly an inspiration! She has made it her mission to help educate and encourage those around her. Highly, highly recommend!

For anyone who has wondered what it was like to live on the prairies of the United States in the early 1920s, here is your answer. This is not just a memoir, but a history. Phyllis Mitchell was born in Nebraska in 1921 and grew up on prairie farms where her parents were sharecroppers. Phyllis and her five siblings worked alongside her parents, as the family lived off the land without electricity or plumbing. Despite dealing with The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl, locusts, floods, illnesses, accidents, and even a frightening tornado, they all managed to not just exist but thrive. Phyllis’s two older brothers were constantly coming up with clever schemes, while her older sister seemed to always be on horseback, helping out in the fields. Phyllis’s two younger sisters at times needed guidance and protection. This includes the one who wouldn’t get out of bed until she was assured that her father had built a “ro-ri-un fi-re” that would warm the kitchen. They all rode horses to one-room school houses. And, in a horse-drawn wagon, they occasionally traveled to the nearest town to trade cream and eggs for other commodities. Her brothers also sold watermelons and skunk pelts. With their father, the children grubbed trees, riding on the bigger trees as they bounced to earth after being cut down. At home, Phyllis learned from her mother how to cook and sew, skills which came in handy when she was hired by nearby families to serve at times as a live-in domestic helper. Here she observed how wealthier families lived. Meanwhile, she excelled at school where she prepared to be a teacher. Although the book focuses on her childhood, we also see Phyllis as she begins teaching in the same kinds of prairie schools that she once had attended. As a teacher, she exercised her same resourcefulness and creativity. During World War II, she helped the war effort by becoming a telegraph operator and station manager, surprisingly challenging and, at times, dangerous jobs. The book ends with her unusually impromptu wedding to the man who, as a high schooler, had ‘tormented’ her in high school band. Part Little House on the Prairie, part Whole Earth Catalog, this memoir combines a compelling personal narrative with delightful explanations of the early technologies that allowed a farming family to eke out an existence in the face of daunting obstacles.

If you experienced life on a mid-west farm, this book triggers forgotten memories. If you did not, it provides you with a clear and understandable picture of a lifestyle that is lost forever, but preserved by storytellers like this author and editor.

Knauer This memoir is a real delight and takes us into a time which can only remind us of how much our world, our lives have changed. It is remarkable just how many topics of daily life are covered: Christmas memories, relations with neighbors, farm animals, daily chores, making pickles, wooden iceboxes, corn shucking, family dogs and prairie dogs, country fairs, dust storms, watermelons and sweet corn, and so much more. I found this memoir a perfect way to learn more about the history of my parents’ generation. It is divided into very convenient sections, making it easy and enjoyable to read. Plus, the many photographs scattered throughout certainly enhance this wonderful “visit” to a world we can only experience now through the memories of those who lived them. Highly enjoyable and recommended!Paula M. Knauer

I don't know her or her family personally but was given this book by a friend. I was so impressed and inspired by how she handled her bout with cancer as a high school student and used the experience to bring God glory. It's a wonderful read and encouragement and I love that she did not "waste" her circumstances but continues to use her story to lift His name high! She is truly living out 1 Timothy 4:12.

Twelve Men, by Theodore Dreiser

Review

"A very engaging book filled with a sense of time remembered accurately and of people remembered, for the most part, with affection."—Forum for Modern Languages

From the Back Cover Although world-famous for his novels Sister Carrie and Jennie Gerhardt, Theodore Dreiser was also highly accomplished in journalism, autobiography, and travel writing. In 1919, having recently accepted the publishing contract of a new publisher, Dreiser proposed to publish a "book of characters" that would collect twelve biographical sketches of individuals who were major influences on Dreiser, both as a man and as a writer. The resulting narratives combine the best attributes of the character sketch, the autobiography, and the short story into miniature masterpieces of prose. The men profiled in Twelve Men are a diverse and colorful group: from Dreiser's equally famous brother, the song-writer Paul Dreiser's ("My Brother Paul"), to the entirely obscure railroad foreman Michael Burke ("The Mighty Rourke"), on whose work crew Dreiser had labored in 1903. The twelve narratives are compelling portraits of the men portrayed, but they also reveal many insights into Dreiser's own life and work.

About the Author Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), American novelist, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and attended Indiana University. He began his writing career as a newspaperman, working in Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was purchased by a publisher who thought it objectionable and made little effort to promote its sale. With the publication of The Financier in 1912, he was able to give up newspaper work and devote himself to writing. He became known as one of the principal exponents of American naturalism, and in 1944, he was awarded the Merit Medal for Fiction by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

It tells about twelve vastly different people who had some kind of lasting effect on him and his life. I found it particularly telling that at least two or three of his novels are based very closely on real life events and people he knew. If you are a fan of Mr. Drieser, you would probably enjoy the insight you get from reading this book.By the way, his brother wrote the Indiana state song using some casual suggestions from Mr. Drieser.

A novel about family and class restrictions by the Man Booker Prize–winning author of This Sporting Life and Saville With 2 rooms downstairs and 3 upstairs, the house at Spinney Moor Road is a real step-up for the Morley family. Arthur Morley is a farmer who frequently comes home drunk, and who often competes with his prudish, penny-pinching wife, Sarah, for the love of their boys, Alan and Bryan. It is Bryan, the younger son, who begins to want more out of life. He yearns for something better and finds it when he goes to live with the childless Fay Corrigan at her posh home in town during the week, while attending a prep school that she pays for. But Bryan soon feels a growing chasm between his new life and the world he left behind. And his mounting jealous-erotic obsession with the much-older Fay leads to actions—and consequences—that will reverberate for years to come.   Beginning in the 1930s and concluding with the onset of World War II, A Prodigal Child is a novel about adolescent yearning, familial devotion, and the stifling conventions of class.

From a psychological viewpoint, I imagine there is something to say. This is about a boy who wants more out of life than what he sees his parents have. His journey to reach that goal is rather weird. One has to draw one's own conclusions.

Great for fans of Offense Design By Roo This is an excellent book for fans of football STRATEGY, about the designs of Mike Martz, a disciple of Air Coryell. This is for those who love the chess game that football is REALLY all about. How do you design an offense so that the defense is put at a disadvantage? If you're looking for those annoying Bios that tell you nothing about why the Rams succeeded at winning the big games, all about heroism and moxie and determination and grit and Kurt Warner went from bagging groceries to #1 QB of 1999, read something else. Hit "Look inside". But if you're not a student of the game, don't you dare go ripping the book because strategy bores you. You're the worst kind of fan, the ignorant , proud, pouring scorn, the crank. This author is practically self published, so these ratings are everything. Not Your Mother's Goose proves that fairy tales and nursery rhymes aren't just for kids anymore. Envision it as the Cliffs Notes of children's stories - if Cliffs Notes was overtaken by Dave Barry or the folks at The Onion. Not Your Mother's Goose is a series of totally irreverent, mega-sarcastic fairy-tale recaps, along with a host of hilarious fake news stories and headlines ranging from Rapunzel getting a bikini wax to Old McDonald bombing on Wheel of Fortune after only buying vowels. The net result is a madcap trip that will leave you laughing all the way from Rumpelstiltskin's Twitter feed to Humpty Dumpty's Facebook page (where Jack is still trying to grow a beanstalk - in FarmVille).

Incredible Satire By Alexander Fitzgerald I love to read good comedic writing, precisely because of how hard it is to find, but I find I'm often let down. Reading the reviews for this title I decided to give it a go.Oh my Lord, was that ever a great decision. Whenever I am pissed off outside my house running from appointment to appointment I pull out my Kindle and read a few of the stories. I have literally started crying at some of the jokes. One great quality of solid comedians is their ability to find the ridiculousness in the obvious and shine a light on it for all it's worth. The way Topher Goggin can turn a phrase with a hilariously astute observation of these ancient tales is howl-worthy. My wife has begun chiding me for my intense spasms of laughter while she's trying to watch TV.The book is not without it's flaws. Topher's batting average is not perfect, but then again no comedy writer is. There are a few duds in the mix, but as someone who has tried to write comedy, I've noticed some jokes do better with certain audiences. Sometimes a sentence that sounds incredible in a theoretical sense just doesn't pan out, and you can't know that till you put out the work. So, perhaps some of these jokes just weren't for me, and alternatively, no comedian can connect 100% of the time. For a debut though this is incredible. I can't wait to read more of Mr. Goggin's work. I just hope that he starts doing stand up as well, or he opens a dedicated Youtube channel!

By Sheryl Short and fun, this is a clever compilation of fairy tales and nursery rhymes re-told with a modern twist. The author gives interpretive summaries of a multitude of fairy tales and folk tales, including "Rumplestiltskin", "Sleeping Beauty", "Snow White", "Hansel and Gretel", and "The Tortoise and the Hare", just to name a few, infusing sarcasm and wit into each. He also includes headlines from supposed newspaper articles and occasionally the article as well. These headlines were some of my favorite parts of the book. I listened to this on audio and really enjoyed the delivery by the narrator Eric Martin, which was spot on with the sarcasm and attitude. A word of warning though-- you will likely laugh out loud while reading (or listening) to this book so make sure you are somewhere you don't have to hold back. I had to try and hold in my laughs more than once, better to just let them out.Be aware that the intended audience is definitely adult and older teens. This is NOT for young children. If you don't mind sexual innuendos and non-politically correct comments and you have a somewhat twisted sense of humor (like me), you will probably enjoy this. Please note: I was provided this audiobook by the author, publisher and/or narrator at no cost in an exchange for a unbiased review courtesy of [...].

By Sci-Fi & Scary A mixed bag of adult spins on classic fairy-tales, Not Your Mother's Goose had me snorting just reading the introduction, so I had high hopes when I started reading it.The stories ranged from mildly amusing to "Whatcha laughin' about, mummy?" from the Snuglet as I cackled on the couch. My favorite has to be the short little article on Rapunzel's first bikini wax, but Mr. Goggin has a couple winners in his re-tellings of Snow White and Bambi, as well as the short little "taken from the headlines" type brief bits scattered throughout the book. My favorite of those is the one about The Headless Horseman seeking a..uhm, well, I can't reprint that. There are potshots that are mostly hilarious at everyone from Gyneth Paltrow to the Oakland Raiders.I won't lie and say that every re-telling in the book was hilarious, or even funny (there were a couple stinkers), but I found myself at least smiling in amusement once or twice per page at a particular line if not at the overall story.Side note: This book came at the perfect time for me today. Really needed a giggle, and Not Your Mother's Goose definitely delivered.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ann Rule presents another collection of fascinating and disturbing true-crime stories―drawn from her real-life personal files―in this seventeenth volume in the #1 New York Times bestselling Crime Files series.

Three decades ago, Jackie Schut was considered one of the most prolific “baby sellers” in the country. She traveled all over the US, murdered women who had just borne babies, and then stole their infants. She is still imprisoned in the South.

A lovely, vibrant woman in San Antonio was found dead in a vacant lot. Her mother, a popular local realtor, never stopped looking for her killer. Just months ago, a truly unlikely suspect was found many states away. At last, the seemingly impossible case to solve had answers no one ever considered.

On Christmas Day three years ago, two grandparents, their son, his wife, their two small boys, their daughter, and her boyfriend gathered to celebrate the holiday. For reasons that are still almost impossible to contemplate, the sister and her boyfriend shot and killed everyone in the room.

In these chilling true stories, Ann Rule reveals the dark underside of the American family unit―together and torn apart. Her unforgettable accounts will intrigue you, and once again prove the obvious: that Rule is “America’s best true-crime writer” (Kirkus Reviews).

While, I don't judge this one as harshly as the last 2, because it was more than one story, I just have a feeling that Mr Rule is losing her edge. I believe getting too close and letting her personal feelings sway the way she writes, definitely hurts the telling of the story. And while I know that was what was wrong with her last 2 full length stories, I'm going to reserve that judgment for the next one. As far as this book, the 1st 2 stories were somewhat captivating, but the ones after that were very dull. I hate to give up on her. Some of my very favorites books were written by her. I'm going to wait.

She was one of the first true crime authors I read, and she remained my favorite for many years. But this latest offering feels rushed and incomplete, almost as if Ann herself is tired of writing the books and is still doing it solely because it's her job. None of the stories contains the kind of detail I have come to expect in an Ann Rule account, and as a result I didn't much care about the people involved. When I become blasé about a crime victim, I know it's time to quit reading. So I give this book three stars, because it IS Ann Rule, after all, and there are no glaring flaws, other than the rushed, "catch it in a sound bite" nature of the stories. Just don't let this be the book by which you judge Ann Rule's talent.

Eden I have read every Ann Rule book ever written even her Possession (her one and only novel - and I loved it - despite harsh reviews I thought it was original at its time - ) anyway, I am rough on her because at one time she set the bar so high no one else could touch her - the past few books have been duds - one in particular and I feel sorry for any of the victims family involved but the strange case of Rhonda something or other - I cannot even remember the NAME of the book but it was just not good reading material at all I was very disappointed regardless - this book my bar has been set low because I feel Ann is getting to a point where her passion may be directed in other areas and it's reflected in her writing. This book however I enjoyed - it wasn't her best but the stories, for me anyway, I thought were pretty astonishing - I mean Good Lord the things people do to one another - it boggles the mind- one story about people so hateful they wanted to "kill any jews on the way" was a quote and I cannot imagine feeling that amount of hate for anyone - she brings to light a story about to kids who kill the boy's father and wife and it's just heartbreaking I cannot imagine losing a family member to such senseless violence - I wish my memory were better - I enjoy her compilations such as this one more so than when it's one story (take away the Dianne Downs and Ted Bundy ones they are hands down my favorite of all time) but I always remember one short story where this woman moves in with her husband and five children in a very lonely area - his brother comes and kills the husband and they live together as man and wife - he leaves and here is this woman with five kids and her husband buried right outside!!! The story terrified me and I think of it often - I thin it was Mortal Danger- it is a recent (within past 5 years) compilation - this wasn't as terrifying but it is good and I do recommend it for Rule fans - I don't think it will bring any new fans to the table but it is good.

It is amazing what the explorers went through and how hard life was. I gained a lot of insight about the life of Native Americans. I knew they were not treated well but I didn't know how badly until I read this book. They certainly put up with a lot. There is a lot of original source material in this book.

Some Interesting Specific Histories By Andrew Glynn Those looking for more of an overview of who and what the early Jesuits were might be disappointed, but if you're familiar with the general outlines, this gives some specific histories that are interesting both in how individuals expressed and diverged from the overall tenor of the order.
