A tribute to the larger than life story of a hockey icon and hero.     The hockey world mourned when Pat Quinn died in November 2014.      Tough guys sobbed. Networks carried montages of Quinn's rugged hits, his steely-eyed glare, and his famous victories. Quinn made a few enemies over the years, but there was no one who didn't respect the tough working-class kid who had fought his way to the very top of the hockey world.     He had butted heads with superstars, with management, and with the league itself. And he had also succeeded at every level, finishing his journeyman's career as the captain of an NHL team, then quickly emerged as one of the best coaches in the league. He gathered executive titles like hockey cards, and done things his own way, picking up a law degree along the way.      He was brash, dour, and abrasive--and people loved him for his alloy of pugnacity and flair, his three-piece suits and cigars, his Churchillian heft and his scowl.     In the end, the player who would never even have dreamed of being inducted into the Hall of Fame was the chair of the Hall's selection committee. That is Quinn's story: an underdog who succeeded so completely that his legacy has become the standard by which others are judged.      Told by bestselling author Dan Robson, and supported by the Quinn family and network of friends, Quinn is the definitive account of one of the game's biggest personalities and most storied lives.

Quinn: The Life of a Hockey Legend, by Dan Robson

Review “In the new book Quinn: The Life of a Hockey Legend, journalist Dan Robson relies on clear, descriptive prose to paint a compelling portrait of the NHL legend, chronicling the highs and lows of his storied career, examining his relationships with his family, friends and colleagues – and delighting readers with tidbits of information that fall into the “Who knew?” category.”—The Globe and Mail   “Robson has crafted a strong biography of the big Irishman whose heart was never as far from his hometown as his body often found itself.”—The Hamilton Spectator   “In this gem of a biography, Robson (The Crazy Game) makes it clear that hockey player, coach, and executive Pat Quinn was a storyteller extraordinaire... The book is chock-full of fascinating, intimate details, from the razzing at the Quinn family table to the sparkly underwear—a gift from his grandchildren—that Quinn wore to the 2002 Olympics.”—Publishers Weekly

The Second World War split the twentieth century in two; the pre- and post-WW2 were two periods a world apart. It is not possible for a post-WW2 person to understand life before and during that war. That may explain why those who survived the transition are reluctant to talk about it for their tale is met with incredulity. However, it is a tale that must be told lest we forget. It is unfortunate that those who truly value freedom and understand its fragility are the ones who once lost it. If it were not so people would be more vigilant guarding it.

Creme This is a first person account of what happened in a small Belgian village when the Germans occupied the country. It is not a story of war but rather a story of survival. What one needs to do to survive, when you food, livelihood and liberty are suddenly taken away. It is an experience that everyone hopes will never be repeated. It is written simply and in a matter of fact way from the viewpoint of a young boy. It is a story told from the heart left with deep scars from the trauma. I recommend this highly if one wants to get an insight into this time and how one copes with this type of experience. Not all the heroes of this time are in the history books. Some passed by unknown, except to those they loved.

Wendy breaks down the psychological component of an athlete's fears, blocks and confidence issues and provides solid solutions to break through them once and for all. Just like muscles need to be conditioned so does the mind and this book gives you the tools needed to overcome challenges in sports and (more importantly) in life as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book, worth the investment.

Four prized selections by one of America's greatest writers: "The Open Boat," based on a harrowing incident in the author's life: the 1897 sinking of a ship on which he was a passenger; "The Blue Hotel" and "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky," reflecting Crane's early travels in Mexico and the American Southwest; and the novella Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, a galvanizing portrait of life in the slums of New York City.

The Open Boat and Other Stories, by Stephen Crane

About the Author American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

I had to buy this for an english class but I've read it twice since then just because its so good. The first story takes place in Brooklyn and it seems very authentic even today. This is one of my favorite authors and I guess there's a reason they have you read him in school - to get you into reading!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. New York Matters By Kristen M. Fusaro Crane has a delightfully light style of writing that can take the deepest and most sorrowful of situations, and somehow bring them light. His, "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets," is a wonderful depiction of life for a 19th century girl in New York. "The Open Boat" puts you on the ship; you can naturally feel the narration and flow with him as he crashes against the waves. A wonderful read for any interested in American or New York literature.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Hard stories for hard times By Guillermo Maynez Stephen Crane died at the early age of 29, but in his writing he shows what he'd come through in life. I think his style is mature and hardened up, due to a life spent in difficult times. In "The Blue Hotel", he depicts a brief, brutal and enigmatic moment in the lives of several residents and migrants in Nebraska, a stupid and cruel fight in the midst of a snow blizzard. The rest of the stories have to do with Civil War episodes and other moments in the US history. My favorite tale is the one that's on the cover of the book: the Open Boat. It is masterfully told, the story is tense, sad and exciting. The reader can feel the up and down movement of the boat, the cold wetness of the clothes, the seasickness the characters suffer, the desolation at every failure to approach the coast, the relationship between the characters, etc. It is a pity that Crane died so young, since in these short stories he shows himself as a talented, gifted and mature writer.

Based on a real, American family, Chestnut Burr is the compelling and true retelling of a family’s history. From Kentucky to the American West, this novel spans generations and time, considering urgent, earnest questions along the way. Just like the chestnut burr, with its spiny skin and sweet interior, the characters in this book are strong and compassionate. Love is found and lost and found again in this enduring, homey tale.

Family history at its best By manfrommaine I must disclose that Marie is the mother of a good friend, but I liked Chester Burr even more than I was prepared to. Ultimately it is the story, going back several generations, of how her family came to emigrate to Arizona from Kentucky when she was a child, but along the way we read about her interesting ancestors, their moral values, and how they cope with personal loss. Appropriate for older children as well as adults.

Read Online Ebook Standing On My Head ... With My Fly Open, by Duke Robinson

When the author was in the fourth grade, a Philadelphia Inquirer photographer caught his grammar school tumbling team's premier performance at a PTA meeting. As a result, Duke Robinson claims to be (trumpets!) the only Presbyterian minister in the history of Western civilization to have had his picture in a major metropolitan newspaper standing on his head with his fly open. The fact his fly was open, he says, reflects the innocence typical of an eight-year old boy reared in a very religious family in the first half of the Twentieth Century. That's who he says he was. That's what he did, and he says, "I wanted never to do it again."Robinson's intimate memoir takes you through a life marked by complex coincidences, surprise twists and turns, and life-or-death close calls that impacted him dramatically. His curious mind kept him asking and trying to answer, with some measure of intellectual integrity, why life works the way it does. How come the smallest incident or choice, either by yourself or someone else, can turn your life in a direction you never dreamed of? The mythology on which Robinson was reared gave him an answer to this question. It emerged, however, from an ancient people who thought the world had recently been created for them, believed demons caused illnesses and didn't know where the sun went at night. He says that he came to see that he could not be whole living in both that world and in the scientific cause-and-effect world we all know today. The author's story of his personal change has to do with discarding a lot of superstition, sentimentality and wishful thinking in religion, in order to be grounded in, integrated with, and liberated by relating honestly to the real world. Looking back, he says, "I began my adult life vowing never to be caught standing on my theological head with my fly open." This book gets you inside the head of a Presbyterian minister who also found that he could not go through the motions or play so many of the games that the Church generally asks of its clergy today. He has wrestled with traditional religion for well over a half-century. Robinson's four other books also bear witness to his changed and changing worldview. Here, in more personal terms, he weaves together stories about his Christian fundamentalist upbringing, reflections on sexual repression, his wonderful families, hilarious adventures on stage, his reputation for humor, parenting four strong children, some hilarious, embarrassing professional mistakes as a pastor, and fascinating projects he adopted in retirement. Robinson served the once very traditional now progressive Montclair Presbyterian Church of Oakland,CA, from 1968 to 1996. He began by asking its membership to lighten up and to get real. And they did. And he tells some remarkable stories about them. He also talks about being a fervent fan of the Philadelphia, Kansas City and now Oakland A's baseball teams for almost eighty years. He asks, "How much more theological stature can you get than that?"

Standing On My Head ... With My Fly Open, by Duke Robinson

From the Back Cover "The title of this book caught your eye, didn't it? This book is better than the title."      Dr. John Hadsell, Professor-Emeritus, San Francisco Theological Seminary, author"Duke Robinson - scholar, humorist, teacher, leader, author, family man - led a public life of achievement and honor. Despite his rational, straightforward, practical outlook, in all his books he beats the drum for agape, the powerful love so beautifully demonstrated in the ancient prophets and Jesus. To read Robinson's memoir is to take part in his lifetime spiritual quest in facing life's mysteries."       Douglas Hergert, author, Nothing in Paris, a novel"Sure, everyone has a story to tell, but only a few can tell it well. Robinson succeeds admirably. As a child he picked up his nickname from DuPont company (DUCO) paint accidentally spilled on him. Here, he brushes his life experiences in bold, clear, colorful strokes, each of which is almost a story in itself. This clear-thinking retired pastor takes us through dramatic "what ifs" and "how comes" of his life and breaks through expected norms. Finally, he forms some surprising, head-standing conclusions that are at variance with his family, traditional religion, and even the predictable portrait of himself."       Robert W. Bone, author, Fire Bone, a Maverick Guide to a Life in Journalism"Duke Robinson has never been afraid to question what has been set before him and find the good in it, albeit, not always in conventional ways. Reading this memoir, at times I laughed out loud, at other times, shed tears. Here is a guy who is not afraid to bare his soul, warts and all. He also serves delicious food for thought."      Julie Blade, Living History, Memoir Consultant "There is a great life to be had without gods and Duke Robinson has lived it and writes about it eloquently. The path away from sentimental nonsense to intellectual integrity, compassion and concern for peace and justice has never been better described!"      Eric Maisel, Ph.D., author, The Atheist's Way and Life Purpose Boot Camp

About the Author In 2000, Time Warner published the paperback version of Duke Robinson's award-winning hardcover book GOOD INTENTIONS, under the title TOO NICE FOR YOUR OWN GOOD: How to Stop Making 9 Self-Sabotaging Mistakes. It appeared in thirteen languages and as an early Kindle book. It still sells briskly. His second non-fiction book, CREATE YOUR BEST LIFE: How to Live Fully Knowing One Day You Will Die, appeared in December 2011, published through CreateSpace. In September 2012, he published his first novel, SAVIOR: An Old Notion in a New Novel of Unthinkable Absurdity, also through CreateSpace. Robinson was reared in the Philadelphia area, graduating in 1950 from Haverford High School. He holds a BA degree in philosophy (1954) from Wheaton College, near Chicago, and a Masters of Divinity degree (1958), from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He has lived since 1960, in the East Bay of Northern California. For 28 years before retiring to writing, Robinson led the dynamic, progressive Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland. For several years during that ministry he served part-time as an adjunct professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary, from which he holds an earned doctorate (1979). Prior to retiring in 1996, he was known widely as a speaker and appeared frequently on Northern California television. Since 2000, he has lived in Rossmoor, an adult community in Walnut Creek, CA, 30 miles east of San Francisco. Barbara, his beloved wife of 54 years died in 2008 (He writes of her dying, and of his almost dying in 2009, in CREATE YOUR BEST LIFE). He has four mature children, nine wonderful grandchildren and two great-grandsons, who are absolute geniuses. In April 2014, Robinson published this award-winning A MIDDLE WAY: The Secular/Spiritual Road to Wholeness, his 3rd nonfiction work. This book, his memoir, STANDING ON MY HEAD ... WITH MY FLY OPEN, became available in November 2015. Robinson was eight when he stood on his head ...  In January 2015, he turned 82.

Living into Integrity By Bill LeMosy I just finished a book I heartily recommend for all folks daring to move beyond the religious programming of their childhood. Duke Robinson, the author, was the youth pastor of my church when I was a highschooler. This is the story of his journey toward living the questions with integrity and into affirming what helps human beings thrive.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Goodbye," Childhood Theology By Ed Frierson This is an honest personal reflection from a career protestant minister (Presbyterian). The story (after all, each of our lives is, indeed, simply our own story) is delightful and a thoughtful read for all of us who have been occasionally out-of-step in one way or another among our family, friends, colleagues, and in Duke’s case, congregations. Duke’s Robinson’s thinking changed along the way from that of a boy embarrassed to be photographed with his pants unzipped to that of a man often embarrassed by having a seemingly “unzipped” mind in the presence of those with carefully zipped minds (i.e., closed and carefully guarded against exposure to any updated religious ideas). I was reminded of the Bible author who said, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.” (I Corinthians 13:11)? What I enjoyed most about Duke’s memoir is that he carefully and practically shared his own “growing up” with details that highlight the joy without obscuring the pain of “putting the ways of childhood (thinking) behind me.” For me, finding Duke Robinson’s book with his carefully explained thinking, his very heartfelt decision-making, his risky practicing what he preached, and his overwhelming obedience to “agapé,” the spiritual foundation for his life, gave me a 50 year flashback. I was a young secular university professor living in the very belt buckle of the Bible Belt, Nashville, TN attending a Southern Baptist Sunday School class with very intelligent self proclaimed “believers.” Oh my, such a struggle the leader had in squeezing the answer to every exploratory Bible question from a narrow, literalist, unyielding, evangelical, seminary predetermined script that the leader described as “truth.” Like Duke, I was patient and empathetic, yet vaguely aware that if not a fish-out-of-water, I was certainly not content to swim only in that tiny theological pool. A fellow class member gave me a book to read. He had noticed my near universal reluctance to speak in class, and suspected the reason was an unwillingness to muddy the water with my personal speculations about scripture. The friend was a cancer survivor who attributed his good health not so much to prayer as to the changes he had made in his lifestyle. To the dismay of some church members, it was rumored that he taught a YOGA class at the YMCA, a certain sign of the devil’s influence on his thinking. The book he gave me, The Christian Agnostic, by the distinguished theologian, Leslie Weatherhead, was mind opening and mind freeing with regard to Jesus, the Church, the Bible, and so on. As Duke Robinson’s memoir also reveals, the assurance of a joy filled life rests not on clinging to childish and institutionalized pat answers, but on exploring radical doctrines such as becoming a peacemaker (and marching in parades that declare it!). I think for some folks who have struggled with “party line theology,” Duke Robinson offers fresh air, sound thinking, realistic life experiences, hopeful reconciliation with those who disparage, and, perhaps more than all, A FUN READ. It is always a delight when the other guy is embarrassed. I must say, however, that I do now check my zipper TWICE every time I put on my pants.

Smith My college classmate pens a sprightly, irreverent memoir which could offend (some) Christians by this Presbyterian minister's frank distain for the Evangelical theology of his own youth and alma mater. But the author's lifetime of humorous, poignant, sometime sobering experiences told superbly in first-person makes this a highly-entertaining read for anyone who can say: "Ok, I know where Duke's coming from--the Left Coast. So what, I'm goin to love his story-telling."

Set in the wake of a galaxywide war and the destruction of a human empire, The Dangerous Type follows the awakening of one of the galaxy's most dangerous assassins and her quest for vengeance.

Entombed for 20 years, Raena has been found and released. Thallian has been on the lam for the last 15 years. He's a wanted war criminal whose entire family has been hunted down and murdered for their role in the galaxywide genocide of the Templars. His name is the first on Raena's list, as he's the one who enslaved her, made her his assassin, and ultimately put her in a tomb. But Thallian is willing to risk everything - including his army of cloned sons - to capture her. Now it's a race to see who kills whom first.

Alternatively, Gavin has spent the last 20 years trying to forget about Raena, whom he once saved and then lost to Thallian. Raena's adopted sister, Ariel, has been running from the truth - the one about Raena, about herself and Gavin - and doesn't know if she'll be able to face either of them.

The Dangerous Type is a mix of military science fiction and an adventurous space opera that grabs you from the first words and doesn't let go. Along with a supporting cast of smugglers, black-market doctors, and other ne'er-do-wells sprawled across a galaxy brimming with alien life, The Dangerous Type is a fantastic beginning to Loren Rhoads' epic trilogy.

Cheney previously published at TheQwillery.comThe Dangerous Type is the first book in a new sexy science fiction trilogy by Loren Rhoads. We meet shady heroes attempting to find and save Reana from a long forgotten tomb in the hopes of rekindling long lost memories of the past. Somehow, after being entombed for twenty years, Reana looks as if she hasn't aged but quickly begins to fade and wither away only to find a reason to live, revenge. If it sounds a bit corny, it's because it is. From the start, this is a story that demands you suspend almost all belief. The characters are all stereotypes without anything new to offer, and they're all sexy beyond belief. In fact, things got so steamy in this novel I began to feel dirty just from reading it. I couldn't make any connection to any of the characters, which made it hard for me to enjoy a good revenge tale. There are some good action sequences but not enough to really make up for the shallow characters and the world building was nil to none, which made it impossible for me to get lost in the world. Rhoads mentions several times that the human race is the minority, but after reading the book I couldn't describe one of the countless aliens that supposedly inhabits her universe. There were plenty of things that could have made this a really great first book, but none of them were developed to the degree they should have been. For example, the idea of the Templars sounded cool, but she didn't explain it enough to build on it. The idea of humans being a minority could have been a cool idea, but I never felt like it was true. Even Reana, the main character who was supposed to be a deadly assassin and bodyguard that everyone was scared of, didn't really do anything to deserve all of this respect and fear until the end of the book, and by then it was too late. The Dangerous Type is the perfect science fiction novel to give to your friend who loves to read hot and heavy romances. It could be a great gateway book to entice your friend who never thought they'd read science fiction. If you're like me and prefer your science fiction to focus on character depth and world building, I'd steer clear of this one. Due to the violence, use of adult language and holy cow amount of sexual situations, I would recommend it to adults only.

I really liked the premise of this novel By AudioBook Reviewer The Dangerous Type by Loren Rhoads is the first in a series called In the Wake of the Templars. This novel is set 20 years after a war that wiped out most of humanity. Raena is a wanted criminal and has been kept captive in the magical tomb world of now extinct beings called Templars. She is finally found by Gaven, a man who has been searching for Raena from the time she was imprisoned. Now she is on the run from Thallian, her previous employer and abuser. But Raena is sick of running and instead plots her vengeance against Thallian, who is now a criminal in hiding.I really liked the premise of this novel, but I didn’t feel like it followed through on its promise. It’s really a novel detailing how someone pursued revenge on their abuser. I did not like Raena’s character and because she’s the main character, it made it hard to appreciate the rest of the novel. While it’s made clear how the circumstances of her life lead her to become closed off, enigmatic, and vicious, I did not understand why she was put on a pedestal by the rest of the characters in this novel. Nothing in her personality made her seem endearing to me other than the fact that she was considered to be beautiful. And that wasn’t enough for me. I felt that the other characters of the novel built up the novel more than Raena in terms of information and emotion while Raena’s actions drove the major plot developments. But overall the plot of the story was good even though it occasionally stagnated. Thallian was a brutal villain and was done well, as were his different sons. The set up and the end of the novel were both good. The narration by Liv Anderson was okay. She didn’t leave enough space between two different characters’ first person perspectives, which made listening confusing. The production quality was good. I would recommend this novel to someone who likes revenge stories set in space.Audiobook provided for review by the author. Please find this complete review and many others at my review blog[If this review helped, please press YES. 6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The blurb on the cover is a lie By Tracer B. I bought this book on impulse after seeing the blurb on the cover that this story combined elements of "Star Wars" and "Firefly" and "Guardians of the Galaxy." I'm honestly wondering if the person who provided the blurb read the same book that I did, as it became one of the few books I've ever decided to return to the store shortly after purchase. The book starts with a supersoldier lady named Raena who somehow managed to survive in an alien Templar tomb for 20 years being unearthed on a distant planet. The setting is built up as a universe in which humanity finds themselves in the minority of sentient races after engineering some kind of super-virus that wiped out the aliens known as Templar. After being rescued by a gruff dude who was Raena's partner-slash-love interest and a reluctant gun-running lady, our heroes head to what appears to be space-Macau to relax and regroup...and then they just stay there. And stay there. And continue staying there.Despite supposedly being on a planet full of other species more numerous than humans, the human main characters are treated relatively well. In fact, the aliens don't actually seem to appear much in this book at all, and when the author remembers to mention them at all, they are pretty much Star Trek aliens, completely human in looks and mannerisms except for "has feathers" or "has fur" as their defining trait. This new story universe full of infinite possibility shrinks to the size of a pin as the writer tries to exclaim what a badass Raena is, except that we're merely told this without seeing many opportunities to see it play out. Instead, Raena splits her time in space-Macau between screwing her two companions and dreading over her psycho ex-boyfriend Thallian. So what is the challenge that our main character must face other than rekindling a 20-year removed romance with gruff dude? Well, it's her psycho ex-boyfriend Thallian. If you're worried over having to figure out whether or not Thallian is a Bad Guy in this story, have no fear! The author will cut away in almost every chapter to talk about how much Thallian loves torture, rape, and beating his clone-children for whatever reason. Sometimes in flashbacks featuring Raena to build up extra sympathy for her, using all the subtlety of a lead pipe to the skull. The sad thing is that Raena and Thallian are the only two characters I can remember by name, and even then I wanted everyone in the book to die in a fire. None of the named characters had lives, or motivations, or anything beyond serving as vehicles to eventually get Raena to a Final Showdown with Thallian. Even with Raena herself, she didn't have much characterization beyond "slave-turned-soldier who hates/dreads her psycho-ex boyfriend." There is one page where the author describes Raena as having "elfin" qualities. Wait, so is she a space-Elf or is this shorthand for a LotR-style elf? There are multiple kinds of elves in fiction, how are we supposed to know what "elfin" means in the context of a new sci-fi universe? What about the Templars that supposedly have this trilogy named after them? Who were they other than an alien race that was exterminated by humanity? Why are their artifacts sought after? Who other than humans seeks them out? How do the aliens react to humans having this ability to wipe out an entire race? What about the human collaborators who sought an uneasy peace when they could've just threatened another alien race with a similar virus? This is the kind of story I would love to read, and the author hints at the possibilities, but does absolutely nothing to answer the questions. If you want a steamy romance story, there are better titles out there. If you want action sci-fi, there are much better titles out there. Do not buy this book, it is not worth it.

A Must for Any Tennis Professional and Parent By Gary J Cimperman This book is a must buy for any tennis parent out there looking to instill in their child a sense of sportsmanship and respect for the game. All too often, players become consumed with winning and losing, or parents place too much pressure on their bourgeoning prodigies to succeed at all costs. Murray details, through his own extensive experience working with juniors, just what tennis is all about. After years of producing champions at the highest level, Murray comes through with a narrative that fully embraces what a winning mentality really entails.I can see this book being used in tennis lessons throughout the country, and should be on the bookshelf for anyone teaching tennis to young children and adolescents. Give it as a gift this holiday season, or as a homework assignment to your students. It's a great way to get children thinking about tennis off the court.

Promising to be among the best LGBTQ literature of our time, Borderless is a beautiful five-year memoir, unconventional in both style and narrative, of many interlaced stories that detail the struggles against society and its constructs, explore the concept of borders and what binds us, and how the micro mirrors the macro. When Jackie, a diehard free spirit, comes out to a man she married too young, he disappears and leaves her married for a year while not knowing where he is. She packs her car and starts driving, picking up strangers off craigslist. What follows is a story that one will not soon forget.

By Nicole Wolf I have never read anything like it!!!This gripping page-turner of a book is woven together with grace. Right off the bat, I connected with the protagonist. Every chapter helped me understand a new layer of her spirit and her story. I love the effortless feel of reading a book that washes you over with perspective. This book reads lyrical and is more of a poem or a prose than a typical memoir. This is one of those special few that makes you feel warm and fuzzy throughout the read. You will want to indulge with a few cups of coffee and will likely speed through it in a day or two. The author has such a unique voice. The darker part of this read flows with such a style you will hunger for more understanding and depth and it will be provided. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I relate so much with the main character. I wish i could have given this book to a younger me! I will definitely share it with friends and family.Very worth reading!!!

When she recounts her relationship with Kris she begins by summarizing the positive memories over their 3 yrs together and then begins again with the relationship's painful and erratic ups & downs. Yikes! I neveri realized that social media could be used as a tool of abuse. When it comes down to it, I experienced the book as the struggle between innocence and freedom and love against abuse and darkness. I applaud her courage and honesty..

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Story that Values Wonder and Magic By McKenzie Tozan When I think of highways, I think of other cars, the open road, corn fields. I think of how limitless, how borderless these highways can be, allowing us to go straight, turn left, or turn right, as we please. But there are also barricades: toll roads, No U-Turn signs, and Detour Turn Left/Right; these are instances, largely like the ones of our own lives, that surprise us and may even challenge us to change course and adapt to the situation. Maybe truly being ourselves works that way, too, constantly challenging us to stay true and move forward, no matter the detours or roads not taken. Jackie Haze tackles these concepts in her debut memoiristic piece, Borderless, head on, coming to terms with her identity, her sexuality, and her role in society, with her friends, and as a member of her family. Detours are taken, roads end, and sometimes we have to make an illegal U-Turn to keep up with her characters, but this adds a richness and vivacity to the text that becomes something more genuine than simply describing a life-changing experience.I think what I loved most about this book were its affinity toward exploration and its challenging of social norms. My favorite “mini chapter” of this book continues to be “balloon,” in which Haze states that she “couldn’t seem to settle with the common or the traditional.” Haze also spends a great deal of time considering the role of wonder in our lives, and how that transforms for so many from magic in their childhood to mundane or triviality in adulthood. Haze, on the contrary, felt that there was still magic to be found in the world and that “the magical people must be in the hidden back roads and dusty cubby holes of life: on highways, in hostels, and in shabby, smoky cafes.” Haze believes in the magical and the extreme, but also the mundane; and when these two existences are placed side-by-side and forced to work through it all together, moments of beauty are able to happen. My primary issues with the book related to the inclusion of mundane details and some questionable expressions of emotion. Haze is very comfortable in her use of repetition, and at times perhaps a little too comfortable, in which case the reader finds themselves in a repeated place, which ultimately becomes a distraction: too much description provided to a mundane activity (on more than one occasion), full letters included when only a glimpse would have done a better job, and the expression of crying or eyes welling up with tears. However, despite this notation, I feel that this is a strong story by a very agreeably good writer, who will only get better with time, further publications, and the pursuit of her wanted MFA.This author and this book value wonder and imagination and taking chances. Take a chance and read this book. It will pick you up and carry you through quickly, and you will appreciate its journey.

I think some tags for this book might have been more helpful. I tend to read anything that catches my fancy be it erotic horror which one of the tales was, I am not too much into lesbian works though I try not to judge them. But some classifications would make this appeal to more readers: Retold Fairy tales include some erotic horror, F/F, M/M, M/F all included.I bought this book mere hours before I received a free copy as an ARC reader in return for my review.

Dark BDSM, lesbian, and gay erotica weren't what I was expecting with this bundle. I was also expecting happy endings--it says so in the summary--but not all end happy either.Mature content, f/f, bdsm, m/m, tragedy

Interesting, but needed more HEAs By Amazon Customer I was given a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. Each story in the boxed set was well written. There were variations on classic fairy tales, as well as lesser known tales that offered romance, humor, and a few karmic lessons. However, given the description's promise that "all of them have that happily ever after you’re longing for," I was disappointed at some of the dark and decidedly not HEA endings.

‘FLASH OF SILVER…the leap that changed my world’ is a memoir and a metaphor. The entire work is divided into three books, each of which contains a different view of self. In doing so it relates directly to the life-cycle of two wild Pacific Chinook Salmon and how their life is influenced by the natural flow of a river that is being exploited by man for commercial purposes. The books are about going 'beyond immediate self-interest’ in four distinct areas: - Our enduring love for someone else. - Our daily food consumption and its blessing, or threat and how to choose between the two. - Our planet and its resilience, or its ruin, and our personal responsibility. - Our innermost faith that can help us see beyond our immediate self-interest in all areas. BOOK ONE: "Downstream Discovery" Is about being confronted with immediate opportunities to pursue pleasure and avoid pain. Mostly self-interested in so much that is new...to us! BOOK TWO: "Oceans of Opportunity" Engages the need to be responsible, to work, to love, to parent, to provide, to share, to give advice, to strive. This time the selfish pursuit begins to be shared by a concern for others but is still greatly influenced by the 'immediate' in our daily 'commercial' lives. BOOK THREE: "Upstreaming on Purpose". Becomes aware of the finite and the infinite and how one may reveal the other. That life is not so much a matter of our 'legacy' (as in what may remain) as it is in what lies ahead...both for our 'self' and those that follow. This, then, is where one may choose to live 'beyond immediate self-interest' and in so doing to finish as the Chinook does, with the survival of our human species notwithstanding the exploitation of our global economic 'river'. The TRILOGY is a journey, a discovery, an unfolding, an awareness of pain caused by selfish choices, of deep sorrow and a great desire to change that results in the arrival, in part, of...joy and the resilience that lies within the original design intention of all creation.

By Amazon Customer A wonderful, heartwarming description of the life of Graham Kerr and his family! I love the humorous truthfulness of this author who has an unusual gift of laughing at his own foibles, but never in a self-deprecating fashion. After decades of life as a celebrity, Kerr finds that his real treasure is following God and loving his family. His journey is portrayed in a clear and gentle style with no hints of the manipulation, fear-mongering, shaming, and materialism that can often be seen from all sides of the political and religious world today.

Even though strange creatures of wild magic have been spotted in the city, no one wants him there, not the bishop of the cathedral, not the crown prince, not the city council, not even the masters of institutionalized wizardry. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Pleasant Read By Greg The Witch & The Cathedreal, following the tradition of Brittain's Yurt series, is an enjoyable reading experience. It is light hearted and good for a chuckle. Beyond that, it intorduces a new chapter in the main character's love life. The tangled events leading up to his new love interest, and their connection together, porvide decent suspense and keep you turning the pages. If you're looking for deep and life-altering reading, than this is not the book for you. If you want something enjoyable to pass the time--you've found your book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars By M. We're getting to the point in this series where I'm no longer sure it's even worth it to write a review. I mean, this is book four. Either you've been reading the series in order - in which case I hardly think you need my help deciding whether to keep going - or you haven't, in which case you probably ought to head over to the page for book one (link: A Bad Spell in Yurt (The Royal Wizard of Yurt Book 1)) and start there. But, since I'm here...A Bad Spell in Yurt, and to some extent, The Wood Nymph and the Cranky Saint (The Royal Wizard of Yurt Book 2), are a bit like a skeleton. They started the framework for the series. Entertaining, if a bit superficial. In Mage Quest (The Royal Wizard of Yurt Book 3) and now this one, it's like the author has taken her sketch and colored it in, and it's becoming clear that this lady is a real artist. The characters have deepened. The plots have started to feel more sinister. And I realize how much I've come to care about Yurt and its inhabitants. So maybe it's good that I decided to write a review after all - it gives me the chance to speak to those who read book one, and maybe book two, and are skipping ahead to see whether the series is worth continuing. My opinion? It just keeps getting better and better.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a fun read By G. Parish This one moves at a slower pace than others in the series, but it is still a fun read with lots of laughs.
