The Climb tells the extraordinary story of Chris Froome's journey from a young boy in Kenya, riding through townships and past wild animals, and with few opportunities for an aspiring cyclist, to his unforgettable yellow jersey victory in the 2013 Tour de France. A journey unlike any other in the history of cycling, Froome has crossed continents, overcome the death of his mother and conquered debilitating illness to follow his dreams and represent Team GB and Team Sky. He has experienced soaring triumphs, humbling defeats, a public rivalry with Bradley Wiggins and, most recently, the pressures of Lance Armstrong's legacy. Extraordinary, revealing and life-affirming, The Climb is a story of determination, hardship and unimaginable success.

The Climb: The Autobiography, by Chris Froome

Review "In this engaging memoir, Froome recalls his childhood in Nairobi, gives a vividly evoked account of his victory and doesn't attempt to gloss over the rivalry between the two Team Sky riders" —Mail on Sunday, Books of the Year"Hard to beat for a top pro's perspective" —Financial Times"Froome's story is an intriguing one." —Richard Williams, Guardian"A brutally tough upbringing." —Paul Kimmage, journalist"The key to (Chris's) success is his mental resilience. He might look like an unlikely strong man at first glance, but I wouldn't let that fool you. Beneath the surface there is a real fighter. He's a tough guy." —Sir Dave Brailsford, British cycling coach"Chris Froome is an absolutely phenominal athlete. It blows my mind how incredible his performances have been." —Victoria Pendleton, Olympic cyclist"Even though we don't see each other so much anymore he has lived in my dreams. He (was) wearing the yellow jersey every day and I almost felt I was wearing it myself." —David Kinjah, Chris Froome’s former cycling mentor and coach"Just a few years ago we did not have anyone who could podium, but now we have two cyclists who can win the Tour in consecutive years. It is a phenomenal achievement and what Chris has done is phenomenal." —Sir Chris Hoy, Olympic cyclist

Was not a huge Froome fan before (didn't dislike him either, just indifferent) but after reading his story it's hard not too root for the guy. He had such an interesting childhood and for the reviewer who did not like those sections, I found them to be the meat and potatoes of the story. Hearing what exactly was going on in the tour with Wiggins was also very interesting. I want to read Wiggins account now so I can compare them although I'd be inclined to believe Froome's account. Also, the insight to how Team Sky operates is very interesting. I have no trouble believing that they would be very "plan oriented" and by design unable to switch up if things do not go according to plan. All in all, one of the better books on cycling to come out in the last year or so. Although he did take a few shots at Armstrong it was refreshing to read a cycling book that was not page after page after page of Armstrong bashing.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. lots of padding By N. Brown I love reading about how the top pro's got to where they are and I've read Wiggo's, Cav's, Hoy's, Lizzie Armitstead and Micheal Hutchinson's works but this book bored me. If you want to understand that Chris liked keeping snakes and fighting turkeys then this book might be for you - the first four chapters cover his schooling in Kenya and then his err schooling in South Africa and then of course there are pages and pages on how to keep a python. I found myself skipping pages and pages of uninteresting detail of Mr Froome's childhood. Although he is undoubtedly one of the greatest cyclists the UK/Africa has ever produced an exciting read this is not.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. An amazing story By Daniel J. Connelly When I reviewed Bradley Wiggins "My Time", which was really an excellent book, I gave it only 4 out of the Amazon maximum 5 stars because while I really enjoyed it, it was perhaps missing that little bit which would make it truly at the top of the genre. If I was teaching a class in bicycling literature, for example, I don't think it would make the short list. That cannot be said of Froome's book, written primarily by David Walsh, which is really remarkable. The description of Froome's history, from Kenya to South Africa to Italy to Monaco (racing for a UK team) is an absolutelhy remarkable one. There's no way, simply no way, he should have been expected to have had the opportunity to become a pro cyclist. Yet a combination of crazy determination, miraculously good fortune, and incredibly hard work combined to make it actually happen.A common reaction to Froome is "how did he come out of nowhere to win the Tour de France?" This book describes that. It was perhaps the most consistently addictive biography I've read. 5 stars for this one is no-brainer.

The Writing Life By Angela Having been engaged in the writing practice as suggested in Julia Cameron's The Artist Way for more than 15 years, I am now a successful unblocked creative person. As a result I no problem participating in a writing workshop where was introduced to the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg and her book Wild Mind. Without realizing it I combined the practice of my writing the morning pages as suggested by Julia Cameron and throughout the day the 10 minute "Keep your hand moving" practice as suggested by Natalie Goldberg. My creative productivty moved in directions I would have never thought possible. I was so excited I when I came upon this CD in researching for my own writing workshop. Julia Cameron and Natalie Goldberg share their experience, beliefs and insight of the creative process that moves way beyound the mechanics of writing. This is a great CD for anyone looking for a jump start in their creative process. Highly recommended.

There are so many questions and doubts we have as writers. This narrative touches on issues we all have with our insecurities, as well as helping to get in better touch with what we have inside. This is spoken from the viewpoint of two very successful women writers, who share their self-discoveries through their writing and teaching. I am very happy to add this to my library and sure I will listen to it again and again.

It had some good thought in it.I think that if I'd read their books first, I would have gotten more out of it. I think that when you really love an author, you would take time to go sit in on one of their talks. This is two authors in a round table setting with a interviewer asking them both questions in kind of a conversation format. Where they talk back and forth to each other about their answers. If you are familiar with either of these women and have liked their books then I would recommend this book. But just as a writer looking for feedback, I would probably not recommend it unless I was friends with one of the authors. If you are a young writer, starting out it might be interesting. I'd click on the sample first.

“Bedazzled by a cloud of thick smoke and thousands of bright electric sparks, I instinctively knew I had to get as far away as possible from the immediate danger... I could hear the strange humming sound of high voltage. A sound I had heard before, walking past an electric installation. The sound, at that moment in time, made no sense to me. My eyes desperately searched the vicinity of the boat, hoping to find my brother and friends...” The triumphant true story written by Braam Louw, following double limb amputations in an accident in 1984 that grasped the attention of the public and the media, is carefully portrayed in this autobiography that will touch the heart and soul of the reader.

A Life Well Fished isn't just about fishing... ...Sure, there are plenty of fishing tales, but it also chronicles a successful life journey--generously laced with wit and humor. ***No sparkly vampires or buff werewolves roam the "twilight" ... just ornery, toothy fish and a boogeyman or three. ***No fifty shades of grey here ... only one or two that tint a modular corporate cubicle. ***And no princesses with icy-glittering rhinestones ... only kidney stones and nagging "frozen" shoulders. The author swims boldly (wait, he can't swim at all...) into the minutia of Americana where few writers dare to cast a line: shopping for bacon; hooking himself instead of the trophy musky he's pursuing; and dealing with sweaty arm pits (that was the least of his problems) on a "dream date" gone awry. Oh, and on a grander level, join his humorous troll that seeks to hook the answer to the enigmatic "Meaning of Life" question. Hop aboard (make sure you're wearing a life vest!) and prepare to smile. This lighthearted portrait is sure to catch your imagination!

By Amazon Customer What really makes this book an enjoyable read is the spirit in which it is written – you will find yourself smiling and laughing out loud at the many predicaments, mishaps, and humorous observations told with a self-deprecating edgy wit. The author humorously chronicles a life journey experienced from the perspective of a fisherman: from a child’s wonder of discovery while pan fishing the local pond; to a teenager’s first experiences with the sights, smells and sounds of the Canadian wilderness; to a man’s savoring of decades of stories and camaraderie gained by sharing his adventures on the water with his closest friends and family. Between fishing pursuits, we are treated to vivid descriptions of growing up as a Chicago baby boomer and tales of school, work and play as a middle class husband/father who, all the while, is continually plotting his next trip to the lake. A fun read all around.

A Truly Believable Fish Story By Merrill H I have known the author for a number of years though mostly through phone conversations and taking care of his in his words" his nearest and dearest non human friend, his boat. His demeanor on the phone has been low key so I was pleasantly surprised by the humor, the candor and the truly lighthearted nature of the book. He brought back many of my own childhood memories and I was interested to learn just how much we have had in common. The book takes you through a range of emotions. It made me laugh and made me cry and many emotions in between. I recommend this book to anyone to likes to have those same emotions brought out in themselves. The best books aren't always about celebrities but about the true life experiences of people we know the best. Well done Ed. I hope there is another one in you. As Bob Hope would say. Thanks for the memories

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was "hooked" and "reeled" in from the beginning until the end. By tnap This is an interesting story of a man obsessed with fishing from his birth until today. The book weaves through his life experiences, from early adventures as a youth, job experiences, recreational activities, and personal stories, all told in a framework of a fishing adventure. There are serious tales, but many more humorous chapters that delight the reader and create "laugh-out-loud" moments. As a member of the baby boom generation, I can relate to many of the same experiences as the author. If you ever fished before and want to relive those times, this book will transport you to your warmest memories of those hours spend on the water, casting your line. I certainly was "caught" by this book's "bait". I highly recommend it.

Excerpt from The Spiritual Doctrine of Father Louis Lallemant of the Company of Jesus: Preceded by Some Account of His LifeOur present issue is in answer to numerous and urgent requests for an American edition of this Spiritual Gem of Father Lallemant's. Having passed through two editions in England, it was suffered for some reason to remain out of print, thus disappointing many who, having derived profit from it themselves, were desirous that it should be made more fully known to the American Catholic world. Its name is but humble compared with its scope and breadth. Those who are leading an interior life will find it an able guide. A searching analysis of the human heart and its manifold temptations is contained, "in deep simplicity," within its pages. We are quite convinced that it has only to be known to be accorded at once a high and permanent place among the most desirable spiritual works.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay, Nature. Following this ground-breaking work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. considered to be America's "Intellectual Declaration of Independence". Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first, then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays – Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, published respectively in 1841 and 1844 – represent the core of his thinking, and include such well-known essays as Self-Reliance, The Over-Soul, Circles, The Poet and Experience. Together with Nature, these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for humankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul." Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist or pandeist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world." He remains among the linchpins of the American romantic movement, and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers and poets that have followed him. When asked to sum up his work, he said his central doctrine was "the infinitude of the private man." Emerson is also well known as a mentor and friend of fellow Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau.

Although written 100 years ago Stephen Crane captures what it is to be a boy growing up in a small town. Much like Ray Bradbury in Dandelion Wine he brings back those warm and sometimes terrible episodes of boyhood. Aside from a few dated ethnic references his descriptions of life as viewed by a 12 year old holds true today. This was Crane's last work written serially to bring in money as he was dying. Amazing that he could recall so vividly his own boyhood experiences as he was Jimmy.

It begins with the sudden revelation of astonishing secrets ― secrets that have shaped the personalities and fates of three siblings, and now threaten to tear them apart. In renowned author Elizabeth Berg’s moving new novel, unearthed truths force one seemingly ordinary family to reexamine their disparate lives and to ask themselves: Is it too late to mend the hurts of the past? Laura Bartone anticipates her annual family reunion in Minnesota with a mixture of excitement and wariness. Yet this year’s gathering will prove to be much more trying than either she or her siblings imagined. As soon as she arrives, Laura realizes that something is not right with her sister. Forever wrapped up in events of long ago, Caroline is the family’s restless black sheep. When Caroline confronts Laura and their brother, Steve, with devastating allegations about their mother, the three have a difficult time reconciling their varying experiences in the same house. But a sudden misfortune will lead them all to face the past, their own culpability, and their common need for love and forgiveness.

The Art of Mending, by Elizabeth Berg

From Publishers Weekly Bestselling novelist Berg (Talk Before Sleep; Open House ) explores memory, love and forgiveness in her flawed but moving 12th novel. At her annual family reunion, Laura Bartone, a 50-something "quilt artist," is forced to confront the secrets that have long haunted her family. Her emotionally unstable sister, Caroline, tells Laura and their brother, Steve, that their mother abused her as a child. As Laura and Steve-whose own childhoods were reasonably happy-struggle to make sense of Caroline's accusations and wonder how they could've been oblivious to or complicit in what happened, their father dies. This could be the stuff of melodrama, but Berg generally manages to avoid it. Her prose is often luminous and buoyant, and her insights can be penetrating. Her big ideas, though, are too frequently interrupted by the sort of domestic-detail overdoses that belong in less ambitious novels ("I hung up, flipped the turkey burgers for the last time, dumped the oven-baked French fries into a basket and salted them, sliced tomatoes, drained the water off the ears of corn..."). Other shortcomings include a few gender stereotypes and a husband and children for Laura who seem too good to be true ("Sometimes it seemed like I was making it up," Laura thinks). But Laura's thornier relationships with her mother and siblings are carefully rendered and compelling. Berg has written a nuanced account of a family's implosion, with enough ambiguity and drama to give book clubs-the book's likely audience-"plenty to discuss and to keep any reader intrigued, right up to the fittingly redemptive ending.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist The prolific Berg (Say When [BKL Ap 1 03]) is unafraid of tackling gritty domestic issues such as aging and illness; in her latest, she takes on the question of why a mother would be so caring with two of her children but treat the third with great cruelty. Although Berg never answers that question satisfactorily, she does offer a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a flawed family. Fifty-four-year-old Laura Bartone, the happily married mother of two, is looking forward to her annual family reunion in Minnesota. But her vacation plans are marred when her father is felled by a stroke, and her sister, Caroline, at the urging of a therapist, confronts Laura and her brother with disturbing information about her relationship with their mother. As she details the verbal and physical abuse she was subjected to, Laura and her brother are tempted to write Caroline's confidences off as just another example of her histrionics. Because if what she says is true, what would that mean about their complicity in the family dynamics? Although Berg proffers a number of reasons for the mother's singular treatment of Caroline, none of them is totally convincing. Berg is much better at detailing Laura's childhood impatience with her gloomy sister and her inability to fully comprehend the cause of her sister's moodiness. This is a skillful popular treatment of a troubling family issue. Joanne WilkinsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "* 'Berg oozes warmth, wisdom and generosity of spirit. Her writing is quite brilliant, as soft as a kiss, as sharp as a knife. An American Maeve Binchy, a modern-day Jane Austen, whatever praise you heap on Elizabeth Berg, she probably deserves it.' Anna Maxted * 'Berg knows her characters intimately-she gets under their skin and leaves the reader with an indelible impression of lives challenged and changed.' The Seattle Times * 'Heartwrenching and hilarious. Berg sits somewhere between Anne Tyler and Alice Hoffman.' Chicago Sun-Times * 'Maybe Freud didn't know the answer to what women want, but Elizabeth Berg certainly does.' USA Today"

(3 1/2 stars) By Diane Moore I usually don't give half stars, but I feel that it was almost good enough to be a 4, but not quite.Elizabeth Berg can always be counted on to discuss the deeper issues in life, and describe them in a way, that makes you want to drink in her writing. She touches on alleged abuse, the makeup of families, and even death in this story. Her books are always quick, I can usually finish them off in no more than 3 or 4 sittings. It starts out with a memory of three siblings: Steve, Laura, and Caroline. The year is 1960, and they are going to the fair. This short chapter was describing how Laura and her sister were not really close, no one is really close to Caroline. She is too hard to understand. She is a "brownnoser," someone who is always giving their mother gifts.Fast forward forty years. Out of nowhere, Caroline wants to talk to Laura and Steve, about some things that have happened in the past, things that have been bothering her. These are things that their mother may have done. Both Laura and Steve are dumbfounded, because they weren't aware of anything in the past that was less than pleasant. As the story unfolds, we realize that there may have been abuse that went on with Caroline and their mom. Even though they start remembering things that do not fit perfectly with their sugar-coated memories, Caroline is still Caroline. Who do you believe? The woman who loved and cared for you all of these years, or your dramatic and difficult sister? As the secrets unfold, you realize who is telling the truth, and who wants to hide from the past.Even though I wasn't that satisfied with the way the book ended, I am always pleased with Berg's style. Though others have described her as "too wordy," I feel that, that is the most beautiful part of her works. The pieces that pull you into the story and these character's lives. I recall one paragraph,"...Maybe it was the tender irony of the way that we, blind ourselves, offer our arm to others, hoping to ease the crossing. Maybe it was the odd surges of love one can feel for an absolute stranger. Or maybe it was the way we give so little when it's in us always to give so much more. Thomas Merton wrote about feeling a sudden awareness of a profound connection to others, understanding that 'they were mine and I theirs.' I loved reading things like that, things that pointed to our oneness and, by extension, our responsibility to others."It's the fact that she is my magnifying glass to the beauty in life, the armchair philosopher, full of wisdom, that keeps me coming back.

One of my definitions of a good book is one that makes me think. A quote: "As for mending, I think it's good to take the time to fix something rather than throw it away. It's an antidote to wastefulness and to the need for immediate gratification. You get to see a whole process through, beginning to end, nothing abstract about it. You'll always notice the fabric scar, of course, but there's an art to mending: If you're careful, the repair can actually add to the beauty of the thing, because it is testimony to its worth." (14) This book is about a family's decision whether or not to repair (mend) their relationships after there has been a great tear through the fabric of their lives. It makes you think about whether there are relationships in your life that need mending.

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Thoughtful and provocative By I Love Books I liked this book, maybe because I felt more personally drawn to the characters than the person who wrote the Amazon.com review. It's interesting that they found the "domestic details" to be interruptive and overdosing. To me, they emphasize that life goes on, even in the face of overwhelmingly adversity. I liked that Laura was able to wait to get married until the right guy for her came along. I liked that she tried to be loving and kind to her children. I imagine that some parents are actually like that. I was drawn to the conflict and yet repelled by it, like the scene of an accident. I was fearful of the personal demons that the book might force me to examine, but at the same time I was thirsty to examine the author's solution.I enjoyed the ending, partly because it was ambiguous and partly because it was clear that everyone acknowledged their own part in the drama and was willing to accept responsibility, forgive and move on. I guess in real life, that doesn't really happen most of the time. Usually at least one of the people is in denial about their own culpability. But when I read a book I like a satisfying ending, and this book gave me that.I liked the symbolic themes of Laura and her quilting passion, how she takes scraps and rags and forms them into something beautiful and appealing. This book led me to think about people and how different we all are and how we all deal with the same situations in different ways. I thought about how much I would have liked to have been a different kind of parent, but how I couldn't because I didn't know how. We all bring a piece of ourselves to the books we read and take away different things. I liked this book and recommend it to anyone who finds benefit in occasionally examining themselves from within.5 stars.

"Gift of Darkness" tells the story of a boy who, like Anne Frank, lived in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Unlike Anne, he was not taken into early hiding, but was able to move around the city, even to help serve its Jewish community, and observe first-hand the ominous things that were happening. Robbert Van Santen lived each day not knowing how or when the war would end, not being sure that he would survive, not imagining that as an elder he would articulate his experiences to an American author. To put one of Mary Oliver's poetic phrases in a new context, his story is "a box full of darkness," but in the telling he offers the author and the reader the gift of stepping into his shoes and thus the satisfaction of coming to understand a teenager's challenging life. What did Robbert do afterward? He sought "to find joy in life despite what happened. Not instead of the memories, but as a response to them."

Review Kirkus Review "A heart-rending biography of a [Jewish] teenager who lived under Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.... A moving, inspiring account of the indomitability of the human spirit." See the full review at: kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/craig-k-comstock/gift-of-darkness/ "Comstock has performed a valuable service in putting these vivid, close-up memories on the record. It is almost unimaginable that all of this happened, miraculous that this young eyewitness survived, and we can be grateful that the author encouraged him to tell the tale." - Adam Hochschild, author of Bury the Chains and To End All Wars, finalist for the National Book Award"A brilliant initiation into empathy, Gift of Darkness lets us slip into the shoes of a teenager witnessing the Nazi occupation of his country. Instead of simply learning about what happened, we share step by step the uncertainty of living when we don't know how things will turn out. Just like real life. Instead of sleep-walking, we get an opportunity to feel." -Liza Ingrasci, President, the Hoffman Institute"Comstock is one of those thoughtful moral voices we all need to hear. Early in his life he urged JFK to propose the idea that became the Peace Corps. He is also a powerful writer ... Gift of Darkness is a strong and moving portrait of how ordinary daily life interacts with extraordinary human brutality, and how people struggle to retain their moral core in circumstances that no human should have to face." - Paul Rogat Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen and The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen's Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear"This book sensitively deals with heart-wrenching examples of what happens when people denigrate others. Through the real-life experiences of one Amsterdam teenager, Comstock brilliantly reveals the hidden costs of prejudice and how, by developing compassion, human beings can move in constructive directions."  -Sharon Tennison, pioneer citizen diplomat in Russia and author of The Power of Impossible Ideas:Ordinary Citizens' Extraordinary Efforts to Avert International Crises"The author has effectively (and poetically) captured the poignancy of a young, frightened human being facing the unthinkable, the unimaginable possibility of what Hannah Arendt called “the banality of evil,” and attempting to cope with the disjunction this creates in the psyche. Like the frog in the gradually hotter pan of eventually boiling water, the protagonist doesn’t fully realize what is happening and cannot respond “normally.” Isn’t this eerily true of so many of us during times of increasing violence, negation, and demonization? Gift of Darkness strikes me as a prescient wake-up call for our time."--Vicki Noble, Author of Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess and Shakti Woman: Feeling Our Fire, Healing Our World"Tender, discerning, and beautifully told, Gift of Darkness describes the adolescence of a Jewish boy coming of age during the Nazi war. A great inspiration. I recommend this book." --Margot Anand, Author, The Art of Sexual Ecstasy"Before you know it, Comstock’s gripping book has slipped you into the slowly terrifying darkness of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, told in large part through the adolescent eyes of Robbert." --Stuart Sovatsky, Ph.D., author, Advanced Spiritual Intimacy and Words From the Soul: Time, East/West Spirituality, and Psychotherapeutic Narrative

About the Author Craig K. Comstock has worked mainly with private clients as a “book creation coach” and also, for five years, as director of the Ark Foundation, seeking ways to end the Cold War. A graduate of Harvard College, he was the features editor of the Crimson and winner of the Frank Knox fellowship for study abroad. After graduate work at Stanford University on “social imagination,” he became co-director of the William James Center for Adult Development at the Wright Institute in Berkeley. Following a childhood in the New York City suburbs and an adulthood largely in the San Francisco Bay Area, he now lives with his wife in southern Oregon. The author or named editor of several books, Craig is now revising a draft about amazing people, some of whom he met in his forties and who illustrate the process of enlarging one’s comfort zone.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Tale of Two Stories By Karen W. I read Gift oif Darkness expecting a sort of nonfiction thriller or exciting piece of biography. The book delivered that, in the form of a vivid and suspenseful story of life for a teenage Jew during the Nazi occupation of his native city. Like the subject’s schoolmate Anne Frank, three-quarters of Jews in the Netherlands were killed. That was the “darkness” of the title. So what is the “gift”? The book tells about the friendship, half a century later, between the subject and a US writer working to take in an experience very different from his own world. The author not only pieces together a story of long ago, based on many interviews and on visits to Amsterdam, but also resists assuring the subject, “I know exactly how you felt.” Instead, he leads us through the process of dealing with the aftermath of trauma, a theme explored in the Foreword by Frances Weller, a psychotherapist and expert of grief. Readers who want to treat themselves to a thrilling story can focus on most of chapters 3-8 plus 10-11 and 13-15. Those who, like me, are fascinated by the process of getting the story can also welcome chapter 9, plus 1-2 and parts of others. The book invites us into two interwoven accounts, and I don’t know which is more valuable. By the way, the 1940s history is told in the present tense, as if we are there. The account of the occupation years is a tribute both to the subject and to the writer, who through his artistry, converts a mountain of facts into a narrative told with breath-taking immediacy in the present tense.

Dark memories, sensitively handled By Roger Mueller I felt ushered into a world of darkness by the author, Craig Comstock, whose sensitive and empathic interviewing of Robbert gradually led me into the sickness and horror that became routine during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Comstock's inclusion of verbatim dialogue between him and Robbert gives a feeling of immediacy to the biography. I could picture the two of them in Amsterdam and in San Francisco, unwinding the tangled web of painful memories. Comstock's own reflections on the encounters with Robbert also helped me appreciate the relevance to our world today and its "dark stories."

This book is so much more than a thriller, though it is that as well. It is exquisitely crafted and creatively written in the present tense while presenting an eye-opening and to me a very different story of the Nazi occupation in Holland. It is a drama that unfolds through revelatory story the calculated destruction of a people and a boy that survives.
