Great Writing By Dave Wilde Max Allan Collins is a very prolific writer whose work ranges from finishing the few remaining Mickey Spillane novels, to penning the Dick Tracy comics, to publishing numerous graphic novels, and writing several of his own mystery series. He is well known for his Nathan Heller series, a detective placed into historical situations including dalliances with Amelia Earhart and Marlin Monroe.Collins' Mallory series is not as well known. He started writing this series in writer's workshops in 1969 and finally published it in the early 80's. Mallory is a mystery writer in Iowa who came of age as the Sixties flourished. There are five Mallory novels, including The Baby Blue Rip-Off (1983), No Cure for Death (1983), Kill Your Darlings (1984), A Shroud for Aquarius (1985), and Nice Weekend for a Murder (1986).In A Shroud For Aquarius, It's the early eighties, Mallory is in his mid thirties. He is a struggling mystery writer, a Vietnam Vet, and a native of Iowa. Sheriff Brennan, whose son John had been Mallory's best friend nefore returning from Vietnam in a body bag, calls Mallory and asks him to come out to a crime scene.Ginnie Mullens had been Mallory's best friend growing up -- like brother and sister-- counting stars at night, sharing Mallory's earliest stories, etc -- until some misplaced words from Ginnie in the High School cafeteria ended their closeness. He had seen her a month earlier at their high school reunion but now she lay dead with a gunshot wound to her face and the gun lying nearby. It sure looked like suicide but the Sheriff wasn't so sure and he wanted Mallory to ask some questions unofficially.Mallory sets out to find out what happened to his old dear friend. He finds that she'd gone whole hog into the hippie flower power drug world but still sought to earn her first million by the time she was thirty. She was running a store but was she dealing on the side? Her ex lived twenty miles away with her kid. Did he bear a grudge? What about her business partner and former lover? What about her bitter disillusioned brother? No one wants to talk to Mallory except maybe Jill Forrest who he dated twice in high school and is now a successful executive.Mallory takes a trip down memory lane exploring old leads from back when, trying to understand what happened to his friend.This book, like all of Collins' books, is masterfully written. Although there is not a lot of action in this book, the story is good and is really quick reading.Mallory comes to terms with his old relationships and what, if anything, the Sixties revolution meant.Great book. Collins does a great job of breathing life into these characters Bd making them real.

Menta, Jr. The fourth mystery in the "Mallory" series, this involving little story mainly consists of a series of interviews as our man Mallory approaches various suspects who may have had something to do with the death of Mallory's old friend Ginnie Mullens. Mallory's investigation is actually done at the request of the police this time, not despite their disapproval, which is an interesting touch.As Ginnie was a 60's radical in all senses of the word (anti-war, fairly adventurous when it came to drugs and relationships), author Collins skillfully weaves into the narrative a hard look on Mallory's part (and Collins', too?) at the 60's generation: acknowledging what it accomplished but taking it to task for some of its more self-indulgent aspects.As Mallory gets close to the truth, effective scenes of tension and danger are stirred into the mix, but there's also a little sexy romance, too, as Mallory gets reacquainted with a girl who got away (or so he thought).A light, fast read with a little food for thought, "A Shroud for Aquarius" is a solid piece of early work from Mr. Collins, now happily available again on Kindle and in print.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. the best of the series By Amazon Customer this is the third mal-book i have read and by far the best. the character is life like, the sarcasm and wit is real and just an enjoyable easy read. there was no need for reading the other books as this one will stand alone with out any prior history for the characters.
