30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Probably first wholistic health book; inspired Back to Eden By A Customer I've used this 19th Century book in a health seminar. It is a pioneering work, and its truths have been adopted with little credit given by the wholistic health movement in general. Ellen G. White was one of wholistic health's earliest proponents. This book is still modern; nothing in it is out of date. Kloss cites the Author Ellen G. White as a major influence, in his book Back to Eden. Ministry of Healing presents a wholistic approach to health, emphasizing a simple lifestyle and fundamental health habits. Ellen White, the author, is a good wordsmith. She avoids tangents, and sticks to the basics that provide 99 percent of what is necessary to live a healthy, fruitful life. She presents clear discussions of family values, community approaches that preserve community health, exercise, whole vegetarian foods, food preparation that preserves food values, avoidance of vices including alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and stimulating foods like black pepper and mustard, avoidance of unnecessary medicine, simple layman healing methods (she pioneered the use of water, hot and cold and sunlight as an adjunct to healing), and she searches the scriptures to find clear modern-day applications to health issues. You can heal yourself with the truths in this book. There is a health institute, Weimar Institute in California, that is based on the teachings of this book. As you read this book you'll experience an atmosphere of incredible light, both spiritually and physically. Her writing style is excellent, and very loving. She's helped me with my health, and I've passed on the truths she taught to many others.

It's not a silly home remedies book. Nor is it a hard to understand technical manual. It gives plain and simple advice on how to live a healthy life. Everything from how to care for yourself and others when ill to what simple steps you can take to keep from getting ill to what kind of diet is best to how to take care of yourself when you're pregnant.Examples: Did you know it is best not to mix fruits and vegetables in a single meal? Do you know what differences in the dietary choices that are most beneficial for manual laborers and those best suited for mental laborers who wish to receive optimum results from their labor?Whomever you are, whether a searcher for physical health, mental health, or spiritual health, you will find this book both fascinating and easily applicable to your life. This book even contains practical advice for medical doctors!

Beautiful and Thought-Evoking By Tara Chevrestt This is a story full of morals and lessons, each one will touch a spot on your heart.It begins with a boy...imprisoned, beaten, harmed, all because of his family background. All it takes is one act of kindness to change this boy's life and that of dozens of people. For when someone shows him this act of kindness, he vows he spend the rest of his life doing good for others.The boy becomes a man, a trash collector. In China, daughters are discarded and abandoned a lot. He finds them in the trash and he keeps them, feeds them, clothes them, provides them as love as he can. With all these daughters, he's relegated to a life of poverty. They don't live like other people, but they have love. They have each other.But what will happen to them all when he dies? He's very ill; he has no retirement, no savings; nobody is helping them.The lessons that sum up beautifully in the pages...-You can't judge a group as a whole by the actions of one or a few. There are bad and good in every bunch.-Never let pride prevent from you getting help if it's needed and available. Don't deny those around you a better life because you can't bear to admit you need help.-Karma happens. One good deed can change a life....as well as your own.-One doesn't need material objects to have a fulfilling life.Very well done and thought evoking. I truly felt as though I stepped in another world. Chinese customs and stories and revelations about Mao's reign and just how the Chinese live in general kept me absolutely entranced. My only quibble: I wish the book had told us more about the romance between Ye Ye and Nai Nai, but this is the first in a series. I imagine there may be a prequel in the future--at least I hope so.

An eye-opening story of compassion and what makes a family By Geoff33 The Scavenger's Daughter is a modern-day novel that brings to our attention the dilemma of orphaned children in China through the story of Benfu, the trash collector, and the family of girls he and his wife, Calla Lilly, have raised. All of their girls were found abandoned on the streets, sometimes in the piles of trash Benfu sorts through. Over the years, adopted daughters have grown up and left home, making room for new girls who in their turn, grow up and leave.When we first meet Benfu, he is a seventeen-year old during the height of the Cultural Revolution, beaten and imprisoned for his family background. He escapes to the city of Wuxi, where he is befriended by Calla Lilly and her parents.But decades later, Benfu and Calla Lilly are old and tired, barely earning enough to feed their current family of six girls. They receive minimal assistance from the City Welfare Office; if not for the wages their eldest daughter Linnea brings to add to their tiny income, the elderly couple would not be able to continue caring for their children. Their biggest worry is becoming too weak and old to finish the job of raising the youngest girls, one of whom is blind, another a parapalegic.Knowing this, Linnea looks for ways to take over as the family breadwinner and goes into a business partnership and a hesitant romance with a young man who is the son of a government official; in doing so she goes against her beloved father's wishes. A casualty of the Cultural Revolution, Benfu mistrusts the government absolutely and he is convinced no good will come of this association.The Scavenger's Daughters is inspired by a true story. Author Kay Bratt spent five years in China, where she became actively involved with an orphanage. She began advocating for the children, pushing past red tape, indifference, and countless frustrations to rally the local expatriate community to help improve conditions at the orphanage. She wrote and self-published her first book to raise awareness of the desperate plight facing children in a society with the thinnest of social safety nets.The premise of The Scavenger's Daughters hooked me and I agreed to read an advance copy. I have issues with some sections that read more like history lessons than conversations. There is a big story gap for me because we jump from the prologue, where Benfu escapes, to the present day and we don't learn much about how he managed to hide out in Wuxi all those years with Calla Lilly's family. Life was tightly regulated, neighbors spied on neighbors, and food purchases were limited by the coupons allotted to each family, so how they managed to overcome these obstacles would've been interesting.However, these are minor issues compared to Bratt's details of life in a poor Chinese urban area and her ability to convey, with compassionate intelligence, the intricate dynamics of family, neighborhood, and local government that dominate much of Chinese society. Bratt has two sequels planned that follow the lives of this unusual family and I suspect they will fill some gaps in this story - which will make them well worth reading. I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

It really struck a chord with me about how someone can take a horrific past and create an amazing future.You will love the characters if you like complex people.You will love this book if you like books that make you re-evaluate how you view the world.If you want a book that doesn't shy away from intense emotional interactions, get this book now.I will look for the next in the series.

Gray As a long time fan of this amazing boxer I purchased this book in order to extend my knowledge of him. From the beginning I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s style. Klitschko was presented in a manner that was devoid of subjective frills, going straight to factual information about his personal and professional history. I knew this was a brilliant, giving, and resilient man, but reading this information really illuminated me on just how resolute he really is. From his humble beginnings in the Ukraine and scholastic adroitness all the way to his boxing history, philanthropic efforts and legacy, this is vivid and inspiring biography of an individual that more of us should try to emulate. Now that I’ve finished the book, I can easily attest that I’m even greater a fan that I was prior. If anyone considering this book doesn’t know as much about Mr. Klitschko as they would like, this book will definitely enlighten you: I can definitely say it did for me.

The book covers all aspects of Wladimir Klitschko's life, from his early life to his boxing career to his philanthropy. Paul has been a personal friend for well over 20 years, and now I am amazed learning new facts about how God protected Paul and his family through World War II and beyond even though his family were refugees and displaced persons. I remember when both of their kids were born, and I've attended their concerts too many times to count. I've always known them to be all-out servants of our Lord, and have witnessed (and experienced) the incredible work that God does in people's lives through their ministry. None of that prepared me, however, for the amazing stories that Marli tells in her book. Some of them humorous, some sad, some touching; but all evidence that God has specifically chosen to use this family in a remarkable way.This book is well-written and easy to read; Marli's writing style is very conversational. But the best part of the whole book are the stories of experiences that they shared while living in an RV for 8 years and traveling the country ministering to others; experiences that can only be explained as acts of an amazing God! I found this book to be incredibly uplifting, and it encouraged me to examine my own faith along the way. I highly recommend it!

It's by Marli Brown (speaker and worship ministry). I wanted to hold off and read it on vacation but once I started it I couldn't put it down. ❤ She shares stories from traveling with her family in an RV around the country for 8 yrs as they ministered to the local church. If you love a good God story, pick up this book today. I was inspired to risk more and trust God more as He leads me.

It illustrates the very interesting life of a very special lady from her childhood in almost unimaginable circumstances in rural Kentucky through her successful transition into adulthood, against all odds. It is inspiring and holds your attention throughout, just wondering what Jenny will face next at the hands of an illogical and often just downright mean Grandmother. You will come away feeling amazed at how the human spirit can rebound from tough conditions. Wonderful book!

The author kept me glued to the story, and created believable wonderful visual imagery, (poor Bitty the chicken, the bridge, and the witch, among many others). The story stayed in the child voice or age appropriate voice to the narrative and it felt like I was "right there". I look forward to reading more from this author.

Rosenblum Against the Wind opens a window into the world of a young girl that is both grim in its dysfunction, yet uplifting because of this girl's growth to happiness and peace in spite of her childhood experiences. Sturgill captures a child's innocent acceptance of the grandmother whom we recognize as severely deficient as a caregiver, yet never loses her sense of self as she balances between her grandmother's warped world and the normalcy of a rural small town community. It really is a book to give you hope and a vivid glimpse of a world that is fading into the past. I highly recommend it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read By Guy Bernard Born in the state of South Dakota and raised in the state of Oregon I had no contact with slavery while growing up. In my adulthood, thru a number of associates, both black and white, I gained an understanding of the lives and perspectives of both groups. Nothing in the story told by Mr. Henson conflicts with any of my limited understanding of the institution of slavery and in fact I feel I have benefitted his writing.

What a remarkable man By Zelda Allard I am ashamed of this period of time---at the same time I am so proud of Josiah Henson and I .am sure there were more slaves like him. His integrity is so admirable. Our God must have wept over how his children can be so cruel to His other children!
