If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast, wrote Ernest Hemingway in his memoir about his time in the city during the 1920s. Half a century later, it has shot to the top of French book charts in the wake of last week s attacks on the city. Hemingway s A Moveable Feast is currently No 1 in France. Copies of the memoir have been left among the tributes to the 129 victims of last Friday night s attacks, reports Le Figaro. According to the French publisher Folio, orders have risen from an average of 10-15 copies per day to reach 500. There was a strong rise [on Thursday], with 1,600 books going out of our stocks, said Folio s David Ducreux. We also received many orders from groups such as Amazon, amounting to 8,500 copies. Usually, we sell between 6,000 and 8,000 copies a year. Ducreux added that Folio is already printing a further 20,000 copies of A Moveable Feast, with plans for a second reprint. At the Fnac in Saint-Lazare station, one vendor told Le Figaro that in 24 hours, I ve used up all of my stock and I ve already ordered 40 more .The book is published in French as Paris est une fête (Paris Is a Celebration), striking a chord with a mood of defiance in the wake of the attacks. This has seen Parisians drinking and eating in restaurants, cafes and bars across the city, and posting about it under the slogan Je suis en terrasse on social media. Written towards the end of his life but only published posthumously, in 1964, A Moveable Feast sees the American author trace his impecunious time in Paris, surrounded by luminaries such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and James Joyce. Hemingway wrote: There is never any ending to Paris and the memory of each person who has lived in it differs from that of any other. We always returned to it no matter who we were nor how it was changed nor with what difficulties now what ease, it could be reached. It was always worth it and we received a return for whatever we brought to it. The demand for Hemingway s memoir has also been fuelled by a much-shared interview with a Parisian woman named only as Danielle. It s very important to bring flowers to our dead. It s very important to see, many times, Hemingway s book, A Moveable Feast, because we are a very ancient civilisation, and we will hold high the banner of our values, and we will show brotherhood to the five million Muslims who exercise their religion freely and kindly, and we will fight against the 10,000 barbarians who kill, they say, in the name of Allah, she said. This isn t the first time Parisians have turned to bookshops in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. In January, after 12 people were killed at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Voltaire s 18th-century Treatise on Tolerance topped bestseller charts in France.

Paris Est Une Fete [ A Moveable Feast ] (French Edition), by Ernest Hemingway

--Wikipedia

The Claverings, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

After being set onto Phineas Finn a year or two ago, I have been unable to stop a frantic Trollope binge-reading. I thought, however, that I had (unfortunately) read everything Trollope had written, but stumbled across this one.It is absolutely wonderful. I'm not sure anyone does love triangles as well as Trollope, and The Claverings offers one of his best yet (Harry, Julia, and Florence). Trollope sets it up such that the reader isn't quite sure where Harry's heart should lie in the end (I, for one, wanted Trollope to pull a Phineas Redux and have Harry end up with "Madame Max." But he doesn't, for many good reasons, none of which will make you feel that it couldn't have ended up well with...well, I won't give away the story.)Needless to say, The Claverings is more than a love story, in classic Trollope fashion. At its most profound, it's a difficult soul-searching of what matters most in life, and how best to get there. And, unlike many of Trollope's other works, he doesn't leave a clear safety net under his characters - you really aren't sure things are going to work out, after all.I would heartily recommend this to anyone who is either an old Trollope pro or someone wanting to get a taste of Trollope for the first time. Perhaps you, like me, will find the world of Trollope to be rich and worthy of a year or two of your free time.

A Male, Victorian Version of Austen's Emma By Catherine Decker If you enjoy seeing good, but fundamentally human and weak, characters involve themselves in rather funny, socially embarrassing positions, this is a great novel for you. I'm too feminist to rate this novel a five-Trollope's accurate portrayal of the vulnerable position of women in Victorian society unsettled me. There is no powerful, outrageous woman figure like Mrs. Proudie of "Barchester Towers"-Mrs. Proudie does get a one-line mention in the novel, however! There are some wonderful minor characters here-Archie, Sophie, and Boodles are wickedly fun. If you are a Trollope addict not yet familiar with this novel, I'd say this is a sort of happy "Small House at Allington." If you are familiar with Rousseau, you will recognize the main character Julie is Trollope's variation on "Julie ou La Nouvelle Heloise" sans the premarital or adulterous sex. If all this is mumbo-jumbo to you, the book is a wonderful depiction of Victorian life featuring a love triangle.

A MUST FOR TROLLOPE FANS By LINDA LEVEN IF YOU ARE A FAN OF ANTHONY TROLLOPE, DO NOT OVERLOOK "THE CLAVERINGS"."THE CLAVERINGS" MAIN PLOT CONCERNS A YOUNG WOMAN WHO GIVES UP THE MAN SHE LOVES - AND WHO LOVES HER - TO MARRY AN OLD, VERY RICH, UPPER CLASS GENTLEMAN. THE MARRIAGE IS A MISERABLE FAILURE, BUT LUCKILY THE OLD GENTLEMAN DIES, LEAVING ALL OF HIS FORTUNE AND PROPERTY TO HIS YOUNG WIFE. IN THIS MARRIAGE, THE WIFE'S REPUTATION IS ALSO SULLIED BY RUMORS THAT SHE IS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH ANOTHER MAN.WHEN THE YOUNG WOMAN FINDS HERSELF A WEALTHY WIDOW, SHE DISCOVERS THAT SHE IS UNABLE TO ENJOY HER WEALTH AND TITLE DUE TO THE SLANDEROUS RUMORS THAT BESMIRCH HER CHARACTER. HER WEALTH BRINGS HER NO JOY AS SHE IS ALONE AND SOCIALLY RUINED. SHE THUS BEGINS A CAMPAIGN TO WIN BACK HER FIRST LOVE WHOM SHE WISHES TO SHOWER WITH HER RICHES.PERHAPS THEN SHE WILL FIND HAPPINESS AND RESTORE HER TARNISHED REPUTATION.IN THE MEANTIME, HER YOUNG MAN WHO TRULY LOVED HER HAS BECOME ENGAGED TO ANOTHER FAR LESS HANDSOME AND QUITE POOR WOMAN.THE MAIN ACTION OF THE BOOK REVOLVES AROUND THE RELATIONSHIP THAT DEVELOPS BETWEEN THE ENGAGED YOUNG MAN WHO CANNOT TELL HIS PAST LOVE THAT HE IS NOW ENGAGED, AND THE NEWLY WIDOWED WOMEN WHO IS UNAWARE OF HIS ENGAGEMENT AND ATTEMPTING TO WIN HIM BACK.AS IN ALL OF TROLLOPE'S BOOKS, THERE ARE MANY SIDE PLOTS THAT ARE EQUALLY AS PSYCHOLOGICALLY INTERESTING.ANTHONY TROLLOP DELVES INTO THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ALL HIS CHARACTERS. IT IS NOT AN 'ACTION' BOOK BUT A STUDY OF LOVE AND GREED AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES.I IMMENSELY ENJOYED THIS BOOK.

Confidence - The Accidental Athlete: How Running Changed My Life tracks the chronology of events and activities in my life that enabled me to have the confidence to try and the self-esteem to call myself a runner.

It describes someone who started out with no intention of being an athlete, with absolutely no awareness that she had athletic talent. It finishes with a call to action to each woman out there that may not have discovered who she is as an athlete and what talent and ability lies within.

Please join me in this book of discovery. My purpose is to inspire other women, of all different abilities, to be confident, and willing to uncover Accidental Athletes at any age or stage in life.

This book was written to help you discover your own Athlete Within. I encourage you to read on about this empowered athlete and how my life was changed forever because of learning and growing through challenge, activity, and specifically, running.

While running was the glue that connected the pieces throughout my adult life, it is the story of discovery that I truly want to share. It is the fact that I learned to understand my inner strength and overcome inner fears that allowed me to grow as a woman and a human being.

I emphasize growth and discovery as something that each of us seeks and some of us are lucky enough to find.

The title of this book describes a priceless gift of self-confidence and athleticism presented to me, through luck, fate, and some of my own effort. Fortunately, I grew to recognize the value in the tangible and intangible aspects of my life when I accidentally discovered that I was an athlete.

I want that same self-discovery and empowered opportunity for you.

By Alexis The voice of the author was likable, as she maintained a happy, optimistic, and upbeat tone throughout the book. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have noted, she did not dive deeper into some of the stories she alludes to in the book. The 20 years of working at Guides For All Seasons, was glossed over, as many other major life events. I wanted to learn more about the author and what led her to her epiphany! On a positive note, it sounds like Atwood has led a life filled with adventure, and I would love to hear more about these adventures in the future!(I received this book, at no cost, from the author in exchange for my honest review.)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Go get it! By SallyA Ms. Atwood was a pioneer in outdoor activities for women. She enjoyed the outdoors and went for it at a time when outdoor activities were not acceptable or the norm for gals. Her exploration of running, hiking, skiing gave her the mental fortitude that so many women are always looking for to overcome some of the bumps in life. A lesson learned. I wish I could have heard more on the exhilaration of some of her adventures and accomplishments. Time for me to take on a mountain.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book's themes of leadership By Sandy I enjoyed this book's themes of leadership, overcoming sexism in sport, and discovering your athleticism in this book. I see a lot of myself in this story and it's so inspiring to read about Atwood's accomplishments. I'm thankful for the support of my parents in helping me pursue my own athletic path. I can also relate to how big problems dissolve into big and inspiring solutions during a nice run!

In February 2014, Aspen socialite Nancy Pfister was murdered in her own home—brutally bludgeoned, wrapped in a sheet, and stuffed inside a locked closet. The question was: Who did it? Fewer than twelve hours after her body was found and without any evidence, police decided a married couple from Denver had killed her. Within a few days, they arrested and charged Nancy Styler, a friend of Pfister’s who’d had a falling out with her after a business deal went sour, and Dr. Trey Styler, Nancy’s disabled husband, who recently lost the family home, his medical practice, and any hope of a peaceful retirement for himself and his wife. Eleven days later, police also arrested and charged Kathy Carpenter, Pfister’s underpaid and overworked personal assistant and closest friend.Months later, Trey Styler, who was slowly losing his grip on reality as he battled with mental illness, confessed to the crime. Rampant speculation spread about whether he was involved at all—or if his confession was that of a man on his deathbed—because a medical condition appeared to have left him barely able to walk, much less carry out such a heinous crime. In Guilt by Matrimony, Styler’s widow, Nancy, reveals the answers to the biggest mysteries of this case and recounts the trauma of being falsely accused and imprisoned for a first-degree murder she had no knowledge of. And, in the only interview before his death, Trey gives his account of that fateful day.New York Times bestselling author Daleen Berry covers this compelling story from the inside, following the Stylers from their fairy-tale life in Denver to the morning of their simultaneous arrest to Nancy’s release from jail and her attempts to rebuild her shattered life. Filled with details from exclusive interviews, a close look at the botched small-town police work, and first-person accounts of what really happened, Guilt by Matrimony is the definitive look at a shocking murder that rocked Aspen.

Guilt by Matrimony: A Memoir of Love, Madness, and the Murder of Nancy Pfister, by Nancy Styler

Review “An amazing story about a homicidal web of deceit fueled by mental illness. It is not a typical true-crime tale—it is in a class by itself. Guilt by Matrimony by Nancy Styler with Daleen Berry makes the case that the hunt for justice in a murder investigation can create as many victims as the crime itself.”—Diane Fanning, national bestselling crime writer“Guilt by Matrimony, a tale of murder and intrigue among Aspen’s chic social set, is as invigorating as a lungful of crisp mountain air. . . . A true-crime yarn with all of the vital ingredients, from high-life scheming to whiplash-inducing red herrings to a classic twist ending.”--John Temple, author of American Pain: How a Young Felon and His Ring of Doctors Unleashed America’s Deadliest Drug Epidemic“Guilt by Matrimony is the gripping tale of a woman whose unconditional faith in her one true love led her to be wrongly accused of the murder of an Aspen socialite. Daleen Berry, the award-winning crime writer behind Pretty Little Killers, helps Nancy Styler tell her tragic, true story.”—Judy Melinek & T.J. Mitchell, authors of Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner

About the Author Nancy Styler is a scientist and botanist whose interest in the Victoria Lily led her to supply the exotic flowers and its seeds to more than fifty conservatories around the world. Styler was also garden editor for "Colorado Homes" and "Lifestyles Magazine." Educated in France as an anesthetist, Styler is also an aesthetician, an accomplished seamstress, and businesswoman with extensive public speaking experience. Most recently, she was falsely arrested, charged with first-degree murder, which is a capital offense in Colorado, and sent to two different county jails for a combined 107 days. During her stay, Styler became a mentor to several of her fellow inmates and discovered the single tragic reason most women end up incarcerated: while still young girls living at home, they were never taught that they had value, or to believe in themselves. "New York Times" bestselling author Daleen Berry is an award-winning journalist who writes about important social topics such as domestic violence, suicide and murder, sexual crimes, and mental illness. She is the author of "Sister of Silence."

I remember this case vividly when the Stylers mug shot blazed across my TV. I was intrigued at the time and wondered what could drive a Dr and his wife to kill their landlord. When I saw that it was written by one of the accused I thought it would be a typical "I'm not guilty" tale. The tale is anything but typical. Scary and heartbreaking but not typical!!

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your money. By Amazon Customer This is a story about people with no connection to real life. All of them seem to have serious emotional problems, no common sense, and unrealistic goals. Even local law enforcement seems to suffer from these afflictions. Reading this book and other reports of the murder, one can only assume everybody is simply covering for themselves. This book is one of the CYAs.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I recommend this to those who enjoy a serious and respectively ... By Rebecca Rog Hood I can only imagine the terror that went through the minds of Pfister's family and friends as well as Styler's own experience. Seriously, imagine that? What would've been your reaction? What would you have done?Pfister may have had a myriad of issues including the unpleasant personality traits of being arrogant, demanding and self-titled. I can believe that she was a difficult person to please let alone tolerate. Her death was inexcusable and a shock to her community. The loss of control of your own life after the seamlessly never-ending events that plagued their lives, the Styler's were thrown into a chapter of their lives I'm sure they'd prefer to skip entirely. Then comes the part where a murder has occurred. This book is written to put the pieces together for the non-Aspenites to grasp the events and understand the before, during and after of the death of Pfister. Barbara's book, "My God is in the Healing Business", clearly let's me know that the difficult situations in life we face can be transformed into positive outcomes. What many of us need is a coach to guide us through these difficult times. Her book weaves scriptures and miraculous real-life stories with important steps for overcoming and maintaining solutions to life's challenges. A gripping novel about a seemingly charmed marriage and a mysterious disappearance at sea

In 1905, a tourist agent and amateur antiques collector named Armand de Potter mysteriously disappeared off the coast of Greece. His body is never recovered and his wife is left to manage his affairs on her own. But as she starts to piece together his life, she realizes that everything was not as he had said. Infused with details from letters and diary entries, the narrative twists forward and backward through time, revealing a lost world of fake identities, underground antiques networks, and a husband who wasn’t what he seemed.

Originally from Belgium, young Armand de Potter comes to New York without a penny in his pocket. With cunning ambition, he quickly makes a name for himself as both a worldwide travel guide and a trusted―if illegal―antiques dealer. After marrying, he moves the family to a luxurious villa in Cannes and embraces an aristocratic life. But as he grows increasingly entangled in the antiques trade and his touring business begins to falter, Armand’s control starts to fray. As the world closes in, he believes he only has one option left.

Told with masterful narrative agility, De Potter’s Grand Tour is a tale as grand as the tour guide at its center. Drawing on real letters, legal documents, and a trove of diaries only recently discovered, Joanna Scott points delicately toward the story’s historical basis and unfolds a detective tale of the highest order.

De Potter's Grand Tour: A Novel, by Joanna Scott

Review

“Joanna Scott is a writer to treasure and her beguiling new novel is an intrepid exploration of the world, of the past, and of the human heart.” ―Peter Ho Davies, author of The Welsh Girl

“Joanna Scott's writing is always a wonder, but this, with its hints of Hawthorne's ‘Wakefield,' is her best yet: a wizardly dialogue between fact and fiction, the known and the unknown. I'll be haunted by her elusive, touching, and deluded hero for a long time.” ―Andrea Barrett, author of Archangel and Ship Fever

“Joanna Scott is the great tour guide of contemporary American fiction, navigating us across oceans of memory and longing. She doesn't sail around the reefs and shoals but steers us right for them, keeping every promise that we'll emerge on the other side intact, if not quite the same as before. In the company of Aimée de Potter as she intrepidly searches for her husband's ghost and secrets, Scott charts here one of her grandest tours yet, one more utterly singular story only she could have written.” ―Steve Erickson, author of These Dreams of You

“Like some exquisite and mysterious tapestry that Armand de Potter himself might have admired on one of his journeys, Joanna Scott's new novel masterfully weaves an irresistible story of love, secrecy, ambition, and devastating folly. De Potter's Grand Tour coalesces history and imagination with such brilliant clarity that a world now long lost seems like a personal experience freshly remembered. Joanna Scott is a magician, a conjurer, one of the very best writers at work today.” ―Bradford Morrow, author of The Diviner's Tale

“Only one of our wisest, deftest, most knowing prose stylists at the height of her powers could have invented the utterly beguiling experience that is De Potter's Grand Tour. Joanna Scott has given us a daringly original and serious novel that in its magical rendering of the interior voices of a Gilded Age European adventurer and his American wife is as credible and moving as it is historically astute. One of the most delightful books I've read in years.” ―Jaimy Gordon, author of Lord of Misrule

“What a whirl of a book, full of secrets and surprises. I read De Potter's Grand Tour in a couple of days, losing myself in its pages, sorry to see the last words run like swift water under the bridge where I lingered, novel in hand. Joanna Scott is among the handful of American writers I will always want to read, and here she offers a capacious circumnavigation of a world tinged by melancholy, love, mystery, shimmering beauty, and unlikely passion. A lovely and strangely affecting read.” ―Jay Parini, author of The Last Station: A Novel of Tolstoy's Final Year

“Joanna Scott's forthcoming novel, De Potter's Grand Tour, is a delicate, enchanting, utterly delicious text, melancholy at the heart and yet slyly funny. Scott is of course a fearlessly intelligent writer, and this book is surely one of her finest. An aching quandary at its center, a question of love and abandonment involving exotic travel.” ―Louise Erdrich, Birchbark Books Blog

From the Inside Flap

Praise for author Joanna Scott:

"Scott's prose is sensitive and beautifully crafted . . . Her characters are both eminently human and touched with magic and mystery." ―The Washington Post Book World"The wit, the magical prose and the daring devices of Scott's writing create an enchantment." ―The Nation

Scott) delivers, in her new novel, a complex study of Armand de Potter -- a man who isn't who he says he is and cannot become what he aspires to be. Scott had access to diaries and letters to guide the broad outlines of her story, we're told, but I get the feeling that the de Potter of this novel is largely her own invention. She certainly uses him to her own ends.Descriptions of the European landmarks, to which the Grand Tour of the title takes us, are among the top reasons to read this book. De Potter is the perfect guide for the American tourist in Europe because he talks easily about everything he sees. His obsession, however, is Egyptian culture and he is ultimately willing to ruin his paying business to feed a fantasy about becoming a recognized authority on the bargain basement antiquities he so assiduously collects. This may be Scott's theme -- no one is who they seem to be, really. And this is the story of Armand de Potter's life.I liked the real people who salt the pages of the novel at key moments. Scott describes an actual turn-of-the-last-century power at the University of Pennsylvania named Sara Stevenson. When Stevenson leaves the University of Pennsylvania (where de Potter has, gratis, housed his collection), she leaves de Potter's fate in the hands of a controversial figure, Dr. Hilbrecht, another real person who fits seamlessly into this story. De Potter hopes to impress Hilbrecht with the gift of a small male bronze, but Hilbrecht pressures de Potter into an on-the-spot analysis of another small antiquity and de Potter's "wrong" answer allows Hilbrecht to instantly label de Potter as a fraud. Unfortunately, he never learns that Hilbrecht's own reputation is questionable; de Potter is always too quick to believe that he's beaten. Eventually, he disappears altogether, an apparent suicide, but even that may be an illusion. The unknowability of de Potter or his fate is the real point of the book, I think. Rather than a straightforward retelling of the known facts of his life, Scott writes a circular narrative that loops around and through, exposing de Potter's weaknesses, his vanities, and his lies. De Potter's inability to share the truth about himself is a tragic flaw in the classical sense. The novel has a contemporary feel, though, and photographs of the de Potters appear throughout the book. Each photo took me by surprise and I would interrupt my reading to peer at them. If there's a photo, then it's a true moment. Or does the photo of a fraud hold any truth at all? Is Scott revealing anything about de Potter's life or merely perpetuating his secrets? I think these are questions we're supposed to ask. This is historical fiction in the broad sense, but read it mainly for the more enticing conclusions it draws about life and lies.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Missing the grand tour By Amelia Gremelspacher Armand was a self made man in the days before this was a compliment. He had come to America shedding his identity as the son of a "bastard" in the late 1800's. His name was changed immediately by an immigration officer's mangling of the original. He never used the name of his birth today. He became a collector and sold his imagined noble heritage as a calling card for selling and mentoring luxury tours through Europe and parts of Asia. His wife Aimee, christened by him from her name Amy, knew him only as a great man, a professor, a man of learning. As his kingdom crumbles, he boards a boat and disappears. The book trace his life's roots and his present. The tawdriness of his collection comes to life. What happened to the man? Aimee is left to discover her future and to construct her new identity.I am not a fan of Armand. His struggles to rationalize to himself are dreary. I believe he would irritate me in person. His pretensions are obnoxious. While many an anti hero rises from his lack of appeal in the books I read, this one did not. I found the book just so so. The settings of the tours had great potential for enriching the prose. While they are described, they are flat to the touch. This may have been a deliberate tool for the further revelation of De Potter's mediocre life, it deadens the writing. I was engrossed enough to pursue the ending, but even it did not satisfy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting mix of fact and fiction By Bookreporter The historical Armand de Potter was novelist Joanna Scott's great-grandfather. This veteran traveler disappeared at sea, and the real-life mystery of his disappearance inspired the literary mystery at the heart of Scott's new novel, DE POTTER'S GRAND TOUR. Much of the book’s substance is gleaned from de Potter's own writings, as well as the letters and journals of his wife, and is peppered with archival photos of the de Potters and their voyages. This, as well as the somewhat formal language and very objective telling of plot and details, at times makes Scott's newest work read more like nonfiction than a novel.Despite this somewhat distanced storytelling style, Scott's de Potter is a complicated character whose nuanced personality and motivations come across, especially in the novel's surprising conclusion. Born into a poor and somewhat ostracized branch of the de Potter family, Armand de Potter reinvents himself as an aristocrat and academic after he immigrates to the United States in the late 19th century. He also begins to fashion himself as a collector, starting with objects he retrieves from the New York Harbor as a member of the Dredging Club. After his marriage to a much-younger woman, Amy (who also reinvents herself as the much more Continental-sounding Aimee), de Potter's collecting ambitions only grow, as the couple relocates to France and begins leading guided expeditions throughout Europe and to Egypt and beyond. In an effort to receive recognition for his collection (and, by extension, validation for himself), de Potter sends most of his acquired antiquities to a small museum in Philadelphia, which, as he discovers during an undercover visit, fails not only to recognize him with the publication of a catalogue (as he's been promised) but also to acknowledge him even with a simple plaque. Nevertheless, de Potter's collecting habit/compulsion continues, as he secretly signs away his family's fortunes to acquire and then ship his collection around the world. After de Potter's sudden disappearance, his wife is left behind to uncover many of these financial secrets, as well as the confusing and often contradictory life history of her husband. Even as she attempts to keep herself and their son afloat, she wonders if she ever really knew her beloved spouse or if their seemingly perfect life together was just an illusion. At times, it can be difficult for readers to feel emotionally invested with the de Potters, given Scott's objective distance and the narrative structure, which switches back and forth (subtly, so that readers need to really pay attention to verb tense, etc.) between de Potter's current location and the couple's past experiences. Periodically, though, Scott breaks through this detachment with a perfectly written scene that is every bit as evocative and emotionally compelling as a reader might expect or want. As such, DE POTTER'S GRAND TOUR is an interesting mix of fact and fiction, reporting and storytelling that shows how historical fact can inspire fiction and how fiction can bring history to life.Reviewed by Norah Piehl

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Wild Adventure in Siberia By Glenn A. Knight Michel Strogoff is one of Jules Verne's classic adventure novels. It is not a terribly difficult or sophiticated book; like Journey to the Center of the Earth, it is what one might call a "Young Adult" (YA) book. There is a revolt of the Tartars, cutting off the forces of the Grand Duke, brother of the Tsar, in Irkutsk. Michel Strogoff, Tsar's Courier, has a messsage to carry to the Grand Duke. Along the way, Michel meets a young woman, who accompanies him on his adventure. We meet Michel's mother, villainous Tartars and a traitorous Russian, and some other interesting characters. Verne gives us a travelogue of Siberia in the mid-1800s as our characters travel by rail, by steamboat, by carriage, by foot, and by raft. For those who are learning French, or polishing up their skills in that language, Michel Strogoff is excellent practice: interesting and not too complex.

Exquisite Reviews - Rose's Thorns By Exquisite Reviews This is a twist on many of the childhood stories we’ve read… but with a sexy twist…Rose has been alone for a long time dealing with the pain of her loss and true love Dimitri, she no longer cares what happens to her as long as her pack is safe. When her Fairy godmother comes back with a request an some help she is not sure what to believe, until Dimitry walks back into her life. The story starts off with something that happens in book 1 but once you read it the author clues you in on what occurred and catches you up quickly.I can’t give the book a full review due to it’s length but I did enjoy the authors take on little red ridding hood. I give this story 3 diamonds.

My aim is straight for the hearts and minds of the people of this world. Throughout this process, before writing I would ask God to work though me to be a blessing to others, hoping to provide good food for the heart, mind, and soul. Through my journey of experiences, testimonies, visions, and discernment has caused my ultimate goal is for these short stories of words to be seeds planted to help develop inner peace, happiness, lead you toward your purpose and build your relationship with God. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very informative By Christopher W. Martin i had purchased this book after visiting the piatt castle in ohio. donn piatt does an excellent job of realizing what goes into the public image of a person and seeing beyond that to the true character of these men. other than his somewhat over-the-top hero-worship of general thomas, this is must reading for students of the age.

Best Ebook PDF Desperately Seeking Sex & Sobriety (Updated): A cautionary tale of Sex Tourism, Drugs, Alcoholism, Prostitution & Suicide, by Paul Pisces

A Cautionary Tale of Sex Tourism, Drugs, Alcoholism, Addiction, Prostitution & Suicide This book is a dark, painful, vulgar true to life story of simply being human. It's written with flair, honesty and without doubt love, and is the kind of book that could readily be misunderstood. The degree to which you reject the storyteller and his tale will tellingly reveal how you judge yourself. Paul Pisces writes with charm, wit and style about the parts of me I'd rather disown. By his owning those parts in him, I too am given another chance. They say honesty is the best policy. This book is vulgar, shocking, painful. The price of honesty. It's also very funny. How could it not be?

He describes it as a cautionary story - it is a brutally frank account of sexual obsession and alcohol and should be required reading for every sixth-former.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a cautionary tale indeed By Ani The subtitle is somewhat misleading -- it's more about sex and alcohol than drugs, suicide, and that sort. I purchased this book out of curiosity -- what'd he have to say about sex tourism -- and found something far more profound and defintely more entertaining than I bargained for. This book is incredible, I didn't want to put it down and nearly read it in one sitting. I had no idea what anyone went through with a bout of alcoholism. It was very real, very tragic, and very mind blowing. However, if you're looking for a book about sex tourism, this might not be it. It's definately more about alcoholism. If you want to read something that'll leave you begging for more, this book is definately it.

This is one of-if not my most-favorite memoirs I've ever read. The author pulls you into his life, you feel as if you are a part of his world. It is real and it is raw. The author does not sugar coat anything. He doesn't try to justify his actions. He isn't a perfect person, but no one is. He is a good human being and shows us that a single thing or two does not have to define us a person.

Forbidden Family: My Life as an Adoptee Duped by Adoption, by Joan Mary Wheeler

About the Author Joan Mary Wheeler is an American civil rights activist fighting for the freedom of 7 to 10 million domestic-and-foreign-born adopted and donor-conceived people. Joan promotes family preservation, kinship care, and guardianship as better alternatives to adoption. She is an adoption abolitionist, citing the demand for newborn infants and the "save the orphans" religious mission to adopt third world children as just two examples of child trafficking in the profit-driven multi-billion dollar adoption and donor-conception industries.Joan is a displaced and resettled person by adoption. She is a half-orphan in her actual family, a legitimate bastard in her adoptive family, and the victim of government mandated identity theft and reassignment.Joan began researching and writing about adoption at age 19 in 1975. Her articles have appeared in newspapers and social work journals in The United States and England. Her autobiographical journal article was translated into Dutch and published in an anthology book of essays on adoption, Kind Van Ander Ouders (Child of Other Parents). Joan was a contributing writer in government publications: The United States Congressional Record, The United States President's Council on Bioethics (on the rights of donor-conceived persons), and the Australian Law Reform Commission of New South Wales. Joan has been interviewed on radio and television in The United States, Canada, and England. Her articles on identity theft through adoption and donor-conception were published on Dissident Voice website, 2015. dissidentvoice.org/author/joanwheeler/Joan's website is forbiddenfamily.comJoan is the owner of Identity Press, an independent publisher specializing in memoir and biography of adopted and donor-conceived people, 2015. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania (1978) and a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from State University of New York College at Buffalo, graduating Cum Laude (1999).

9 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Think You Know Adoption? By Fred Tomasello Jr. “Nobody thought about it. We just wanted a child.” The “it” is adoption. These are the words Joan Wheeler’s adoptive mother related to her years later and they equal the preconceived ideas about adoption held by me and millions of others.A phone call at age 18 starts the "reunion" and carries the reader on an emotional roller-coaster that continues for decades. The raw, descriptive language connects as secrets and family nuances are revealed. Every page is riveting and the candid details are gut wrenching. Long years of discovery, rejection, introspection, research, maturity and courage merge Joan’s memoir into a laser light focusing on the pure importance of truth. While undergoing years of severe emotional stress, I am amazed that Ms. Wheeler was miraculously able to write cogently about her families. Her clarity and conclusions enhanced my understanding of adoption. As Joan’s natural father admitted years later, “But if I had education, none of this would have happened.”

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An eye-opening book By Stanley Bostich I have absolutely no experience with adoption. I learned SO much from this book. It wasn’t an easy read for me. I had difficulty keeping track of the various family members (birth, adoptive, half-birth, foster-step-adoptive, I think). What I found most amazing was the images of the two birth certificates listing different parents and birth names. I was astounded to discover that many adult adoptees do not have access to their own birth records. That is just flat-out wrong. The reunion portion of the book gave me a perspective that never would have occurred to me. I now have some appreciation of the time, energy, and stress involved with being “found” and getting to know the “new” family. Just the extra demand on your time could really mess things up. In these families, there were so many half-orphans and adoptions, etc. that it is no surprise that they were really messed up. I have no doubt that there was much love. There was also much anger and cruelty. Also, adoption seems to be much more common than I realized. For example, while I was reading this book, I had it with me in a restaurant. The waitress asked me about it, then told me the story of her adoption.Though this book is a memoir, the author puts a lot of effort (perhaps unsuccessfully) into trying to understand/explain the feelings of the other people involved. I’m also impressed with her desire to fit into all the sets of relatives and how much effort she put into it over the years. My overall impression is that the author was a pretty normal artsy teenage girl, then WHAM!I highly recommend this book to anyone considering adoption. It can give a heads-up to a lot of easily avoided pitfalls. For adoptees, well, if you’re interested in hearing someone else’s story…this is one hell of a story.

6 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Strangers When They Meet By Lori Carangelo Joan Wheeler takes the reader within, so that the reader feels the trauma she experienced. By doing so, the reader can understand that, not only in Wheeler's case, but also in most post-adoption reunions, no matter how they are handled, adoptees are meeting strangers who had been in on the secret to varying degrees. A "birth" mother, and in Wheeler's case, birth siblings, have memory of the child up to the point of relinquishment. The adoptive parent(s) are provided some degree of pre-adoption history and may or may not share what they know,at their discretion. "Forbidden Family" supports the need for abolition of secrecy in the adoption process and not just 18 or more years after finalization -- as well as the need for better forms of legal custody, such as individualized legal guardianships, that are truly "in child's best interestsCHOSEN CHILDREN - Billion Dollar Babies in America's Failed Foster Care, Adoption & Prison SystemsTHE ADOPTION and DONOR CONCEPTION FACTBOOK: The Only Comprehensive Source of U.S. & Global Data on the Invisible Families of Adoptiom, Foster Care & Donor ConceptionTHE ADOPTION and DONOR CONCEPTION FACTBOOK: The Only Comprehensive Source of U.S. & Global Data on the Invisible Families of Adoptiom, Foster Care & Donor Conception
