At nine fifty-five that morning, it was telling him that today wasn't going to be a good day.He glanced out the window at the rolling hills that made up the Nicholson Ranch and wondered if being a farmer would have been easier. Crops didn't break through fences in the night and wander away. Crops didn't try to be born breech. He could be growing corn. Or wheat. Wheat was patriotic. All those amber waves.He turned his attention back to his paperwork and shook his head. Who was he kidding? He was a fifth generation rancher. The closest he would come to farming was the vegetable garden the ranch cook grew out behind the bunkhouse."Hey, boss."Zane watched his foreman step into his office. Frank Adelman took off his worn cowboy hat, slapped it against his left thigh, then eased into the hard, plastic chair in front of the desk.A visit from Frank before noon wasn't going to bring good news."What?" When you find a place to belong and someone to love life becomes magic By Mary Gramlich Phoebe Kitzke is getting kicked around all over the place and when her friend suggests she get away on a great working vacation Phoebe thinks this might be a great cure for her troubled life. What Phoebe did not expect is to walk into cowboy heaven with Zane Nicholson or the high drama going on with Zane and his brother and of all things a cattle drive. But Phoebe is a fixer, a do gooder, and above all a woman that wants to fix what is not working.As the group is assembled and the drive begins the feelings that Phoebe has for Zane are all about passion and nothing about figuring out what is making him so angry all the time. Zane learned to care for himself and then because he had to his younger brother and trying to keep a kid determined to go down the wrong road on the right path is a strain for anyone. As the days grow warm and the nights even hotter it is becoming more difficult for Zane and Phoebe to deny what they feel for each other. They are troubled souls longing for the same kind of love but coming at it from different directions. Zane may be the strong silent type and Phoebe could talk to a rock about her thoughts the two learn that not everything comes out the right way but the result can be the same.Susan Mallery has created fascinating and diverse characters, an fresh story with exciting twists, and a love to rival the northern lights.
5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Weakest book in the Fool's Gold series By Book and Dog Lover I really enjoy the Fool's Gold series. I find them to be a comfort read - you know exactly what you're getting (the general plot is always the same) but the writing is good and I like the town and characters of Fool's Gold.I didn't care for the first book in this trilogy (Hold Me) but I had high hopes for this book. However, it was a struggle to finish this book. There were too many things that just didn't work for me:* I really didn't like Phoebe, the heroine. I think the author was trying to make her a sympathetic character - talking to animals and wanting to rescue people but I found that she came across as childish. Wanting to help people is one thing, but willing to take the blame for a criminal action such that you could lose your real estate license is another. And of course, she's a real estate agent for all those people needing starter homes in Beverly Hills, so of course, she doesn't have any money - that made no sense. And for a woman who's supposedly 27 she acts like a teenager - wondering who she can ask to find out if the hero likes her. Are we back in high school?* Zane, the hero, of course, can't fall in love because of a traumatic incident in his youth. He doesn't say much, but of course, has the hots of the heroine and in the space of 1 week (the timeline for this book) can talk to Phoebe about his past.* Chase, the teenage brother of the hero, whose actions created the entire mess of the cattle drive is the misunderstood teenager. Here's a 17-year-old who took money from strangers so that he could fund his computer project. That's not a misunderstood teenager - that's someone who needs to be punished for his actions.*Does the author know any vegetarians? I have several family and friends who are vegetarians and none of them would ever go on a cattle drive. On top of that, I would not consider it a good thing if I caught one of them eating meat.* The secondary plot of a childless couple who are taking a couple of foster kids on the cattle drive was a bit better. But again, the fact that everything is resolved in 1 week was a bit difficult to believe.Overall, if you like the Fool's Gold series, you may be able to look past these weaknesses and enjoy this book. But I couldn't get past the heroine's actions.

This story centers around Zane Nicholson and his cattle ranch which has been incorporated into the town. His brother is a computer whiz and had set up a site to have greenhorns come on a cattle drive. Zane decides to teach him a lesson and have the cattle drive anyway. Joining him is his stepsister and her friend Phoebe.We all know what will happen, the question is how and with what problems.What is normally such fun in reading this series is the quirkiness of the town and its citizens. In this case though everything is strangely subdued in that manner. Even the 2 eccentric older ladies Eddie and Gladys are strangely subdued. There is not the depth in the town's character that there usually is.What is there, to a great extent, is the magnetic attraction, which is a wonderful part of romance novels and enjoyable, but one can tire of the constant wishing and thinking about having a quickie. One sometimes wishes there was more to romance plots than ripping off clothes.Still this is an enjoyable Fool's Gold novel for those who follow the series. It is also a stand alone book for those who have not read any of the previous books - and those did have a bit more depth and joy in the town itself and its citizens.
