Get a glimpse inside the chaotic world of hip-hop with Mac Mall's eye-opening new memoir, My Opinion.

Raised on the unforgiving streets of California's notorious Crestside neighborhood, Mac Mall had a choice to make: either grab a MAC-10 or grab a microphone.

The latter won out, and, having fallen in love with hip-hop at a young age, Mac Mall achieved his dream music stardom even earlier than he could have imagined. Taken under the wings of Bay Area legends Mac Dre and Khayree, Mac Mall released the best-selling album Illegal Business? at the age of sixteen—and never looked back.

Over the course of his career at the independent rap label Young Black Brother and beyond, Mac Mall managed to make his mark on the world of hip-hop while coming face-to-face with life and death itself.

Pulling no punches, My Opinion offers a raw look at a life spent navigating the thrilling—yet treacherous—waters of groupies, drugs, and the ever-evolving music industry.

This inspiring memoir ultimately shares one man's story of chasing a dream, catching it, and trying to hold on through the wild adventures it leads him on.

In the time of swords and periwigs and full-skirted coats with flowered lappets - when gentlemen wore ruffles and gold laced waistcoats of paduasoy and taffeta - there lived a tailor in Gloucester. He sat in the window of a little shop in Westgate Street, cross legged on a table, from morning till dark.

All day long while the light lasted, he sewed and snippeted, piecing out his satin and pompadour and lutestring; stuffs had strange names, and were very expensive in the days of the tailor of Gloucester.

It's ideal for a slightly older child. A very sweet story of a tailor, his cat, and a group of mice who save his business when he is too ill to work.

A clean house and a dirty toad By Darien Summers The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse is yet another example of Beatrix Potter's brilliance in creating a fun and entertaining story for children with the use of animals.Mrs. Tittlemouse is a very tidy mouse who loathes guests that are dirty and drop by unannounced. The later happens quite often due to the many sandy passages leading to her house that attract bugs. Mrs. Tittlemouse spends the first half of the story shuing out unwelcome guests, and then in the second half her most dreaded surprise guest shows up: Mr. Jackson, a pesky honey loving frog that never wipes his feet. A long day follows. After Mrs. Tittlemouse's frustrating day, she begins cleaning for a fortnight. Mr. Jackson does end up coming by again. He is given the honey that he desires, but not granted access to the house.I believe this tale teaches children the importance of being neat, especially in somebody else's home. Also, the fact that Mr. Jackson was given honey in the end adds a nice touch to the tale. It doesn't push revenge, and gently preaches kindness for even the most disagreeable of house guests.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book. The Mischievous Hare

Sure this version of the story for Kindle is not illustrated, so I read the story to my kids at bed time and told them to close their eyes and use their imagination. There is another version of the story for Kindle that you can get for around $6, but the free version works just fine. I am a Christian mommy who is very picky at what I let my kids read/hear/watch and this is a very appropriate book for our standards.(By the way, my little ones are 4 yrs, and 2 yrs in case you were curious what age group I was reading to)

José Manuel Prieto’s Rex is a sexy, zany, and sophisticated literary game rife with allusions to Proust and Borges, set in a world of wealthy Russian expats and mafiosos who have settled in western Europe. J. is a young Cuban man who, thanks to his knowledge of Russian and Spanish, has become the tutor of the young son of a wealthy Russian couple living in Marbella, in the part of southern Spain that the Russian mafia has turned into its winter quarters. As J. attempts to give the boy a general grade-school education by exclusively reading him Proust, he also becomes the personal secretary of the boy’s father, Vasily, an ex-scientist that J. suspects is on the run from gangsters. Vasily’s wife, Nelly, a seductive woman always draped in mind-boggling quantities of precious stones, believes the only way to evade the gangsters is an extravagant plan linking Vasily to the throne of the czars. Rex is an unforgettable achievement: an illusory, allusive gem of a novel that confirms José Manuel Prieto as one of the most talented writers of his generation.

Rex: A Novel, by José Manuel Prieto

From Publishers Weekly A Proust-worshipping narrator falls into the dangerous world of the Russian mob in this novel run amok by the author of Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire. In Spain's fashionable Costa del Sol, the narrator takes on the tutorship of young Petya, the son of wealthy Vasily and Nelly. Petya's education amounts to lessons derived entirely from Proust, considered by his tutor to be the ultimate source for all wisdom. Meanwhile, the tutor is exposed to the staggering wealth and suspicious circumstances of the household: Nelly parades around wearing enormous diamond necklaces, Vasily reels his new employee into his shady dealings, and sinister servant Batyk lurks in the background. Before long, it becomes apparent that Vasily and Nelly are involved in the manufacture and sale of fake jewels and are on the run from the violent Russian gangsters they've swindled. The narrator is a perfect Proustian naïf, steeped, as is the book itself, in the rich and allusive depth of world literature and language, but also deeply innocent and foolish. It's painfully intelligent if overwhelming. A cunning Proust scholar could tease a thesis out of this. (Apr.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "In Prieto, frivolity is a serious matter, and in that sense he mines the same territory as Nabokov. . . . Prieto's vision of Vasily as king swallows up the second half of the book and seems truly rapturous." -- Natasha Wimmer"A confounding, glimmering, and literature-besotted novel." -- Oscar Villalon

About the Author Born in Havana in 1962, José Manuel Prieto is also the author of Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire. He lived in Russia for twelve years, has translated the works of Joseph Brodsky and Anna Akhmatova into Spanish, and has taught Russian history in Mexico City. Since moving to the United States, he has held teaching appointments at Seton Hall and Princeton universities.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Utterly Brilliant By M. Haber Anyone who is a fan of Nabakov, beautiful language, imagery and literary puzzles should not pass this novel up. Although the 3rd in a series, this novel can be read independently(as I have done). The main character becomes a tutor for the son of a Russian family in Spain. Equipped with only The Book (Proust's 'Rememberance of Things Past')he quickly falls in love with his student's mother and comes to believe the family is running from the Russian mob. However no one is innocent as the protagonist lied about his credentials to get the job in the first place. Also...this is only the novel in "plot" terms and plot means very little to Prieto, who weaves science, the Russian mob, Russian history, Star Wars, The Matrix, diamonds and many other subjects that are somehow obscure - but not - into his writing. Other themes deal with exile, love and how Proust saw everything in the world and was able to put it inside his masterwork. There are too many beauiful passages to quote but this book and author should be read by many. A superb translation of a masterpiece.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A thoroughly enjoyable literary puzzle By G. Dawson This novel by Cuban-born, Russian-educated José Manuel Prieto is narrated by a tutor (who asks to be called Psellus) and directed to his pupil, eleven-year-old Petya, the son of two Russian émigrés living in luxury on Spain's Costa del Sol. Petya's parents, Vasily and Nelly, are hiding from two Russian mafiosos they swindled out of millions in a scheme involving fake diamonds. But, in Rex, appearances are highly questionable, and the purported swindle could be merely a tool used by Vasily and Nelly to persuade Psellus to do their bidding, including transforming Vasily into the long-lost czar of Russia. Whatever the truth, plot is secondary in Prieto's unique literary creation that is Rex.Psellus derives his lessons to the young Petya, and indirectly to the reader, exclusively from the Book, Psellus's name for Proust's In Search of Lost Time:"If you receive nothing more from me than some knowledge of the details of the Book, if in all your adult life you don't manage to retain any more than a few passages, a few scattered phrases of the Book, that would be enough to give you a distinct advantage as you go out into the world. Only through the Book can you learn to judge men sensibly, plumb their depths, detect and comprehend their obscurest motives, sound the abyss of their souls."Psellus's other influences include the supremely worthy Writer, who is really an amalgamation of numerous writers, including Shakespeare, Nabokov, and Dostoyevsky, and the despicable Commentator, quite likely intended as a stand-in for Jorge Luis Borges, and perhaps even, at times, for Prieto himself.Prieto's prose defies description. It's unlike anything else I've read recently (or maybe ever). It's a highly referential banter of thoughts, images, dialog, and questions to the reader. Often lacking in subjects or verbs or other generally indispensable parts of sentences, Prieto's sentences are obscure and difficult, but also loaded with charm and humor. Esther Allen's flexible, lively translation is its own work of art. As demonstrated by this scene where Psellus steals a dance with the beautiful but unattainable Nelly, Allen captures the musicality and exuberance of Prieto's language:"In which the two of us danced, Nelly's face and mine, our faces consumed by fire, the blue tongues of my passion, the impulse that led me to inhale the aroma of her hair, bewitched by the arc of her brows, revolving at the center of a slow song that astonished me when I heard its first chords because I said to myself: jazz, but without being able to tell you [Petya], you up in your room at that moment, to interject a rapid commentary, overlooking for the moment the commentaristic (or belated? Or belated) nature of jazz. A song that now, each time I hear it, of course."Rex is a thoroughly enjoyable literary puzzle for those who embrace originality and can accept some amount of confusion for a little over 300 pages (if the quote above brings fear to your heart, you should probably skip this one). This book begs a second reading, which I suspect would be even more pleasurable than the first.

4 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Swing and a miss By Biblibio My first admission is that I never actually finished reading "Rex". I read most of it - some 200 pages - but when I had to abruptly fly out and return the book to the library, it remained unread. For a while, I still maintained wishful thinking that I would finish the book but after a few weeks the book had almost completely disappeared from my mind. It became clear that this would be a book to fall into the category of "incomplete"... but for a better reason than just "its due date was up".See, "Rex" is a very pretentious book. I'm talking REALLY pretentious, to the point where even I (typically okay with some raising of the brow) was unable to enjoy the read. I had to grit my teeth throughout every chapter, wondering at the various literary references (which mostly flew over my head, possibly because I was only seventeen at the time of reading...). The characters raised their noses to the sky, the writing expected the reader to understand bucketfuls of references and allusions, and the entire premise was built on this pretension, on this so-called literary basis.I couldn't deal with it. Every page was a struggle, every ramble about Proust a tedious headache, and every additional moment spent on the novel one more spent on a book that I just wasn't clicking with at all. I tried to convince myself that the problem was with me, that I wasn't clever enough... but that feeling is pretty terrible. Nobody should ever feel inadequate because of a book and "Rex" made me feel that way.Obviously the book has a lot going for it. I presume to readers who've read Proust, Nabokov, and Borges (to name a few) would probably tell me that there's so much depth and cleverness to the writing in "Rex". All I saw was pretentiousness at the expense of the reader. All I felt was this overwhelming boredom and the sensation that I was "missing" the importance. The writing is good but not outstanding - it was a little too jarring for my taste, not exactly my preferred writing style. And so it lay forgotten, to the point where I now know I won't try again. There's no point. A book that so frustrated and bored me while I worked at it (and it was indeed WORK) does not deserve a second shot and though I did not finish it, I read enough of the book to feel that my assessment of it would not have changed within the last pages.Just not the book for me.

Monty should probably have stayed in the desert. Going home, to Melbourne, was a mistake. Home has too many memories, too many people and at home, trying to live without ties to anything, proves to be a hard philosophy to hold up. In the desert it was easy to focus on the wonder in the regular and nothing else. And the last thing Monty wants to focus on is themselves. Home means confronting lost love, and possible new love, old ties, old feelings and powerful urges. It means wild, irresponsible fun with crazy, loyal and loving friends, but also judgement and pressure, however well-intentioned, to move on, and stick around. But how can you move on when your only love is still living in your old house, with somebody new? If you could just destroy the house, maybe? Burn it to the ground, perhaps? But you can't do that with them in it? Can you? *** Monty is a compelling novelette, spanning one autumn night filled with cigarettes, offbeat friends and house fires. And by the end of it Monty has reached a decision, but is it the right one?

Entertaing and Relatable Read By clear_tranquil I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. This is a short story containing a snapshot of Monty's night on the town and how they are desperately trying to figure out their place in the scheme of things. Monty identifies as someone who doesn't necessarily fit into the gender binary and they are perfectly fine with that. What Monty is searching for however, are genuine connections with others. I really enjoyed the stream of consciousness writing style and the story was very relatable

"Monty" gets a pass for effort, but fails in everything else By Rod Raglin I want to thank Marcelle Liemant for his hard work and commitment to this worthwhile endeavor.Monty, Nadia and Art are heading out on the town, but first they watch a house burn down. Then they’re off,"The streets rush past as we leap through the yellow lights. We run too fast, we laugh too loudly. We are too young and too old and too much. This night is open for the taking and we are rushing for it."Monty apparently is emotionally damaged. Just what has happened isn’t clear. He wants to forget, to not inhabit his “self”, be filled with the presence of other people and events. They crash a party, they drink whiskey, Monty dances wildly by himself to very loud music and becomes so caught up in it he does a handstand.Another friend, Daria arrives at the party but they quickly have to leave. The four of them run through the streets (again). Nadia encourages Monty to go with Daria. She thinks Daria will help him recover from whatever is tormenting him.The reader eventually learns what has traumatized Monty and pushed him to the brink is nothing more than being dumped by his previous girlfriend, Cecilia. As the wild night progresses “the thread” eventually takes him back to Cecilia’s where he attempts to purge the past that’s plaguing him by setting fire to where she lives..Author Marcelle Liemant should be commended for his attempt at a progressive style of writing. His oblique dialogue, his somewhat unique phrasing and word pairings are interesting when they work, but most often they don’t. The vague references and ambiguity of the characters and their motivations quickly becomes frustrating.More often than not conversations between characters are little more than existential gobbledygook. After a while this fifties-era hipster jive talk style became annoyingly pretentious as well as unnatural. While Liemant may well have thought he was imbuing hidden meaning in the obscure imaginings and dialogue of his characters, to this reader it was just the opposite. What was likely meant to astound, instead confusedThere’s a book by author and teacher Les Edgerton, called "Finding your voice – how to put personality in your writing". In it Edgerton argues if you were allowed to just write “naturally”, not like how you were "told" to write and not like how you think a “writer”should write" (which he calls writing “writer-ly”), you’d have your original voice. In "Monty", I get the impression the author is trying to copy the style of a writer he admires and it’s coming off sounding “writer-ly”. Copying someone else’s style usually tends to sound unnatural because, well, it is unnatural, not only for the obvious reason, but also because you’re likely not of his time, his place, and most certainly not of his presence of mind.I believe if you have a good story the voice to tell it with will come to you. Sort of like the literary version of W. P. Kinsella’s famous line in "Field of Dreams".If you take away Monty’s angst, there’s no depth in his character whatsoever and neither is there in any of the other characters. By their actions and emotional responses I had the impression I was reading about adolescents, though their histories suggest they’re young adults. The plot is superficial and only once very briefly when Monty’s gender was questioned did I think there might be something more to it then post relationship antipathy and remorse. There wasn’t.I liked “Monty”, but only for what it attempted, not what it achieved.I downloaded this book from StoryCartel free in exchange for an honest review and as part of my ongoing commitment to review the work of self-published authors.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Evocative and interesting By Kadlady I received a copy of Monty from the author Marcelle Liemont. It is an interesting story told in the first person of someone who is genderfluid and seems to be affected by depersonalization disorder. Monty returns to Melbourne after some time away in the desert. The reader eventually learns the reason for Monty’s departure, as it continues to cause problems in their life, to the point they decide to burn down their former home. Monty’s most responsible friend Nadia stops them in time to prevent arson and takes them to her place. There Monty seems to realize they need to follow a thread that reconnects them to something. This is an unconventional story about an unconventional person, but fascinating nonetheless.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. From underdog to Green Bay's top QB By Rachel Horon Aaron Rodgers has been a quarterback worth watching in his NFL career. There was still a lot I didn't know. "Aaron Rodgers: The Inspirational Story..." showed that he was not a "jock", but an athlete with a passion for sports, a mind that was academically strong, and the motivation and determination to achieve dreams such as playing for top colleges and the NFL. While he did not get his first choice of the San Francisco 49ers, he has made a name for himself through his leadership and team approach with the Green Bay Packers. As one of the most notable quarterbacks of these era, he is an ideal role model. When I share this book with my teenage son, he will know that more as well. This book is full of stats and facts, but definitely interesting!

By Amazon Customer This was touching and thought-provoking story of how addictions can not only destroy relationships but also the people who suffer from them. I have never read anything that has given me a better understanding of what it feels like to love someone who is under the control of something so destructive. This book helped me develop a lot more sympathy and compassion than I had before I read it. Good story and very well-written. I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Jeri L. M-F Awesome story! Heartfelt and poignant! It will leave you speechless!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Insightful at times. Quite visceral and raw at others. By Thomas Mac I'm not sure where my previous review went. Maybe somewhere in the ether...This was a great read. Insightful at times. Quite visceral and raw at others. Most books retelling tales of addiction are first-person. This story gives great perspective on how addiction affects affects all parties in a relationship. This would be a great teaching tool for counsellors and those in recovery alike. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.

Full Color Electric Football, by Earl Shores, Roddy Garcia

From the Author Praise For Full Color Electric FootballMore than a nostalgic nod to a much loved game, Full Color Electric Football deftly documents the rise of pro football, the equally innovative (and competitive ) path of iconic toy companies like Tudor, whose evolution changed their game as much as, say, the no huddle offense shifted the NFL's gears. I have been playing electric football since I was four (I'm now 59), and am proud to say my late brother and I convinced our folks to put more than a few of the Incarnations of the game beneath our Christmas tree. Even so, I learned a lot about that which took place in the companies' respective "huddles."These stories are recounted by the authors in a brisk, informative fashion. (Think of your favorite team's offense when it's clicking.) You don't have to be a dyed-in-the-wool fan of this game to enjoy it. Three of my best friends proved this the other day. Trust me - you'll return to this book again and again.-- Reuben Jackson, author, poet, Host of Vermont Public Radio's Friday Night Jazz, former Curator of the Duke Ellington Collection at the Smithsonian in Washington, DCI can't say enough about this book and what joy it brings to me as I look through the beautiful photographs of fields, teams, box artwork and ads that not only trace the game of electric football but the history of football itself! The artwork on the old fields pictured in the book not only capture the game, but the outside frame of the field from each new year expressed the artwork of those times. The photos in Full Color Electric Football show brilliantly all the beauty of these games and bring back memories not only of the electric football game I had as a child, but memories from watching the NFL on TV throughout the years and all the exciting unforgettable games that were played. Electric football allowed me to replay those games on my living room floor and gave me the chance to keep my heroes playing long past their actual retirements. Full Color Electric Football is nostalgic, beautiful, memorable and interspersed with historical facts about electric football as well as the history of professional football. This books real beauty though, isn't necessarily what's on its pages, but its what those pages bring back to life from your memory. Times with friends and family, great games, losses, wins, forgotten hobbies, life events and simpler times. If you had the game as a kid or if you didn't and are a football fan you will want this book close at hand and I guarantee you will find your smile growing with every turn of the page! -- Lynn Schmidt, Electric Football "Coach" since 1968, National Administrator for the Miniature Football Coaches AssociationIf there was such a thing as an Electric Football Hall of Fame,  Full Color Electric Football would serve perfectly as the Hall's virtual tour guide. The photos are beautiful and they capture the essence of so many baby boomers' Christmases and childhoods.-- Greg Eno, Independent Journalist

About the Author Earl Shores and Roddy Garcia have chased the story of Electric Football for more than two decades. During that time they authored numerous articles about the electric football for publications ranging from the Beckett Football Monthly to Toy Shop, and have been interviewed by print and video media on both the national and local level. With the help of Marvel designer Michael Kronenberg, Shores and Garcia published the The Unforgettable Buzz: The History of Electric Football and Tudor Games in 2013. This first book ever published on the topic of Electric Football received great acclaim, even being used in the classroom at the University of Central Florida.Full Color Electric Football marks the second offering from the Shores, Garcia, Kronenberg writing and design team. It was a natural offshoot from the narrative-based Buzz, with an all-photo format that fully takes advantage of Michael Kronenberg's extraordinary design skills.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The steel gridiron in glorious HD. WINNER!! By Greg Jones As a fan of The Unforgettable Buzz, I didn't think another book on electric football could grab my attention the way "the buzz" did. I was seriously mistaken and gladly so. Full Color Electric Football is the buzz on steroids. The true glory of the steel gridiron is brought to life through page-after-page of closeup color photos that provide the reader super cool detail of the players, the boards and Lee Payne's amazing designs. The authors pay homage to many legendary NFL and AFL games by recreating them in full color on classic gameboards. The history of this great game so many of us grew up loving is placed on a much deserved pedestal in this beautifully designed tribute to America's real pastime. Shores, Garcia and Kronenberg tell a story that will be enjoyed by all generations. I know I'd be thrilled to find this one under my tree this season.

I think I saw tears welling up in his eyes but he turned away before I could make fun of him By Philippa Hughes I gave this book to my brother who grew up playing electric football. The nostalgia overwhelmed him. I think I saw tears welling up in his eyes but he turned away before I could make fun of him. I'm so glad I found this beautiful book for him.

Excerpt from Star Lore of All Ages: A Collection of Myths, Legends, and Facts, Concerning the Constellations of the Northern HemisphereThe author's first book, A Field Book of the Stars was simply intended as a guide to the constellations. It was an effort on his part to acquaint the reader with the star groups and the individual star names. In his book, In Starland with a Three-inch telescope he sought to indicate to the amateur astronomer what could be seen of the stellar wonders with a modest telescopic equipment. It follows naturally that having come to be on friendly terms with the stars, and having seen many of the beautiful sights that the night reveals, the tyro should wish to know more of the history of the stars and how the constellations came to be named, and the purpose of this book therefore is to satisfy that desire. It is always a pleasure to trace back to their sources the traditions with which time has endowed the enduring, and thus the study of the myths and legends that surround the eternal stars possesses a surpassing charm for those who have learned to know them intimately and through nightly communion with them have come to love them. The author quotes extensively from R.H. Allen's Star Names and Their Meanings, an exhaustive and scholarly work and an authority on the subject, and he here pays tribute to the author for the pleasure a close perusal of his book affords, and heartily commends it to all those who desire to make a closer study of the philology of the ancient star names.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Well-written and interesting, but if you can, get the original By Tim The book itself is great; it describes the mythology and history of each constellation, citing a number of sources and cultures. However, this copy, being the "classic reprint series", didn't do a great job of copying the original illustrations. If you can get an original copy for a similar price, you'll probably appreciate that more.

Prior to WWII when the Romanian monarchy modernized the nation, Romania became one of the richest countries in Europe. During that time, my family was a part of privileged intellectuals and land owners. After 1939, Romania was subjected to Fascism against her will, and after 1945, the country came under Communist rule. All of us were reduced to poverty. I have witnessed how the Communist regime marginalized people and suppressed individual liberty, private initiative, lack of opportunities, and hope. I used the course of my life and decided to write its story for the purpose of showing others what an unsuccessful, socialist, Marxist government means. When it came to power, the State seized the fruits and the bounty it found, however, without producing anything on its own, except thousands of deaths and political prisoners. This is my story under a Communist regime when I lost my liberty.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. excellent book By Joe Aronson Book is a very good and detailed documentary of the life of the author caught in the storm of the WWII and the communist persecution in Eastern Europe. The is similar with the life stories of thousands of people who from a life with nothing missing in it, had to survive a war first and after that loose all property and assets followed by persecution. Some had to endure years of labor camp and physical extermination. The lucky ones with surviving skills, like the author, got to see a brighter future, starting the 90's.The American and in general the English speaking reader will have a hard time relating to this, because it will look unconceivable. However, worthwhile to be read and appreciate the freedoms we have here. Never take anything for granted.Recommend this book for all people who deal with Eastern Europe and interested to know in depth their recent history.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Powerful Story By Papet This book is a chronicle of the author's journey from a serene and privileged life in a prosperous and democratic pre-WWII Romania to the hardships and tragic events that she experienced under the Soviet style communist regime imposed by Moscow in post-WWII Romania. Just like the people who experienced Holocaust, some victims of the communist crimes against humanity chose to forget but others, like the author of this book, thought that those crimes must be exposed and recorded for the benefit of future generations who must see that such historical aberrations will never occur again. If a movie script will ever be based on this book, that will be a powerful narrative the likes of which the American public never saw since "Dr. Zhivago".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and she marries her first love by proxy By Amazon Customer What a life Simone Kleckner has lived. It was definitely written by a lawyer, (which she becomes) -- and I almost put it down. But once Romania is invaded and Ms. Kleckner's family begins to lose its various country estates, strangers are lodged in her house, and she marries her first love by proxy, I was hooked. And the second marriage! The situation was described so baldly, trying to be fair (it seemed to me), that it was doubly horrible. My impression was of an indomitable personality. I was so very relieved that she finally met her husband, a human being. And then the final string of "coincidences" that enabled her escape with her husband in Rome. It was clear from her description of her early days that she had built up a wide network of friendships among people both in and out of Romania, and that this network of friends, and the author's determination and faith that what she set out to do could be done, enabled her deliverance.
