There was an old woman who lived in a shoe; She had so many children, she didn't know what to do. She fed them all broth without any bread; Then whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed. ~Mother Goose, The Dorling Kindersley Book of Nursery Rhymes (2000) She took them from the woods, and she took them from dells, from hamlets and homesteads and across the wide world, she found young orphans, those abandoned and left on their own, and gave them a home.  And all she asked for was a little piece of their soul in payment... Whoever said nursery rhymes were harmless?

Polly Waterford is recovering from a toxic relationship. Unable to afford their flat, she has to move miles away from everyone, to a sleepy little seaside resort in Cornwall, where she lives alone above an abandoned shop. And so Polly takes out her frustrations on her favourite hobby: making bread.

But what was previously a weekend diversion suddenly becomes far more important as she pours her emotions into kneading and pounding the dough, and each loaf becomes better and better. With nuts and seeds, olives and chorizo, with local honey (courtesy of local bee keeper, Huckle), and with reserves of determination and creativity Polly never knew she had, she bakes and bakes and bakes.... And people start to hear about it. Sometimes, bread really is life...and Polly is about to reclaim hers.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Yum! By PattyLouise Little Beach Street BakeryByJenny ColganThe main and most important characters in this book...in my opinion...Polly...lover of banter and breads, Neil...the portly puffin, Huckle...bee keeper and former resident of Savannah, Georgia, Tarnie...fisherman, Mrs. Manse...meannie and former baker and Polly's landlady...now maker of tasteless toasties, Chris...Polly's sort of clueles ex boyfriend and Kerensa...Polly's best friend. There are other grand and great characters but these were my faves. My very brief story summary that includes bits and bobs from the beginning, middle and end of this book...Every once in a while a book is just simply perfect and totally magical. Polly leaves her life behind...or rather her life leaves her...she is without a home, a job, a fiancé! All she really loves to do is bake breads! Fully carb loaded amazing breads! She travels to a little island where you have to know when the tide is in or out to actually get to it and she finds a little loft on top of an abandoned bakery. She meets fishermen and a beekeeper and a millionaire, a wounded puffin...Neil...and a mean and nasty landlady! What is so much fun about this book is Polly and the banter between everyone. This book is fun, quirky and dare I say...it's adorable...but not in a sickening kind of way. If I was Goldilocks I would pronounce this book...just right! Plus I love portly Neil The Puffin! He loves brioche and tea kettles...lol!My actual most favorite part of this book...What I really truly loved about this book was the actual day to day life of living in this little beachy town. I also loved seeing Polly grow, blossom, and bloom! The descriptions of breads...and warm honey and jams and tea and good strong coffee and fish and chips and cheeses...OMG! Lovely! To die for! Amazing! My actual real and true feelings about this book and whether or not other potential readers will enjoy it...Books appeal to different readers for a multitude of reasons. For reasons unknown this book simply sang to me. I loved everything about it. Readers who enjoy quirky clever sweet books...should truly love this one.My thank you to Edelweiss for allowing me to read this book on my Kindle Paperwhite!

A popular book blog recommended this one and I was a little surprised from the beginning. It reads like some of the novellas I get for my kindle around Christmas time- not at all serious, Hallmark movie-esque, easy reading. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I guess I was expecting it to be a little smarter, if that makes any sense. I really enjoy Sophie Kinsella and she has a positive quote on the cover of this book. The cover also has a cupcake on it, and the bakery in the book is a bread bakery- no cupcakes! That's no big deal, of course; the big deal for me is just how choppy the writing is. I have noticed one example of this in romantic comedy books lately- the story will be told in third person but mostly from the girl's point of view, but then all the sudden, you're getting the guy's point of view for like half a page. It's awkward and it's inconsistent. There were also a lot of awkward transitions in the book. A character will be feeling strongly one way and then shift to an opposite feeling with no explanation- off the top of my head, this happened with Huckle (Haha! Worst name ever! Do British people really think Americans have names like that?! which also reminds me that the dialogue written for the American was jarringly bad), Kerensa, and Mrs. Manse. Another awkward aspect is the shift in setting without proper explanation- i.e. you thought they were on the beach but now they're back at the hotel. But I guess all of that would've been okay if I felt like I really knew or understood the characters. They were either poorly drawn or caricatures. There were also a lot of over the top cliche situations- massive storms, humungously unrealistic parties, dramatic beach and rain scenes, etc. I like "beachy reads" but this one just didn't work for me.

Light-Hearted Read for Foodie Fiction Fans By Miss Bonnie When Polly’s long-term relationship comes crashing down and with it the business they’ve built together, she’s left to start over completely from scratch. With so few options available to her, she agrees to rent a run-down flat with a leaky roof on the island of Polbearne. She finds solace in utilizing her baking skills and filling the air of the island with the enticing smell of freshly baked bread.Polbearne, a quaint seaside village off the coast of England, is based off the actual island St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Colgan’s descriptions of the village were thorough, detailing not only the people and their way of life but of the town itself and the sole causeway being the only way to come and go on the island. While the people in the village weren’t always the most friendly (since they saw Polly as an outsider), the village itself sounded like a such a lovely place to reside with its small shops on cobbled streets and a ruined yet still charming castle on the top of a hill overlooking the island.Polly’s ever-constant baking was also given much detail and constantly left you craving delicious breads. After one particularly tasty sounding chapter I became determined to also become a master bread maker. Long story short, I failed miserably. Bread is FAR harder to bake than Polly makes it sound like just so you know! I didn’t actually attempt any of the recipes included in the story (Cheese Straws, Sweetcorn Fritters, Cinnamon Rolls, Focaccia, and my favorite: Shortbread) but I’m determined to try again. Someday. This fun little foodie novel is not without its fill of drama though. Polly immediately begins butting heads with her landlord who is the sole baker on the island and Polly’s freshly baked bread is hampering her sales. Her landlord has her own personal history that ends up being told as a side-story. Polly also gets involved in some romantic complications that ends up being something akin to a love square. While I’m not a fan of love triangles and especially squares in general, what really disappointed me with this one in particular was the lack of chemistry between Polly and any of the men. What I loved most about Polly was her empowering story of hitting rock bottom and finding the strength to not only make a living but to find out who she is while being on her own again. The romance element wasn’t completely necessary in my opinion and especially not that many romances. It made it all avoidably messy and I would have appreciated a much more simplistic story in that regard.I don’t know how I’ve failed to mention the best part of the story this far into my review! When Polly moves to Polbearne she unintentionally takes on a new pet which she names Neil. Neil, the puffin. Neil was by far the cutest addition to the story even though he was unrealistically tame, but whatever! Now I want a pet puffin.Little Beach Street Bakery is a sweet, entertaining tale about learning to navigate the harsh realities of life and finding what you’re passionate about. It’s the perfect read for foodie fiction fans and readers simply looking for a light-hearted read.

Auralia was gone without a trace. Only the memory of her lingered. Like her magic, invisible yet tangible. Before she had disappeared, she had written a note. It was addressed to no one. And yet, it was clearly directed at everyone. Her fans, the hordes of devoted followers left longing for her beauty: "I have surprised the world with my magic, but my magic has been my only company...Every man who has said they loved me, loved me only for my secrets, my powers, but most of all for my beauty. No one sees the real me. They do not see my soul. None have seen me. None, and so I must disappear..." Auralia vanished like clouds over the moon, like mist across a river, like daylight when night appears... She was gone; no one had seen her since her last performance.

According to Homer's Odyssey, the daughters of Pandareus, though innocents both nurtured and favoured by goddesses, were ordained by Zeus to be tormented by the hateful Furies. No hero is sent to save them. No mutiny, no uproar, not a single protest is recorded against the injustice. Generations of Homer lovers have perforce accepted this prime example of callous indifference by Olympians. Not so Alethea Crowe, who has gestated a well-argued revisionist construct to explain if not excuse the gods' behaviour. To make her case, the enigmatic professor connects and throws fresh light on those parts of the creation story and the myth of Tantalus that most strain credulity. The author brings to life the family of Olympians with fond affection. Meet straitlaced Hera daring a bamboo chair to collapse under her. Ferrari-driving Hermes overly jealous of his reputation. Aphrodite having difficulty with time. And Dionysus, the would-be thespian, who alone among them shares a very human passion. Gods and humans take their turn on stage. Mortal protagonists prove expendable. One by one they meet a violent end as Ascendant Zeus, menacing offstage presence, orchestrates the daughters' fate. But perhaps Zeus' power is not what it once was, and a new 'Ascendant' is waiting, unbeknownst, in the wings. Suspense builds up chapter by chapter throughout the author's unique page-turner, all the way to its moving and memorable climax.

Review 'This is a thought-provoking work of fiction, an enthralling thriller to be read and reread, offering new delights each time. I enjoyed it enormously' Jenny March, author, The Penguin Book on Classical Myths --.

About the Author The author, professor of History not Eng. Lit, finds the labelling of her work as historical novel misleading, as biography perverse, and detective fiction an insult.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. what the gods don't know By Katherine Kasserman You can't have even a passing familiarity with the ancient Greek gods without knowing what delicious characters they are and how hard they scheme, as well as what bad news it is for mortals once they get their teeth into something. But, turnabout is fair play. The gods are living comfortably in the modern world, coasting on their power, when some long-discarded Titans decide to enter the game and shake things up again by using humans to unearth a dangerous secret. Among the gods, at least fun-loving Dionysus has the gumption to stand up to Zeus's terrible retribution, but I will recommend, without spoiler-ing, that you do not count the humans out.The Ascendant is a fun, twisty romp with some serious heft behind it. I devoured it as if it were my own child!

More Than Just A Rat Trap: Small Game Trapping, by Blake Alma

From the Author I often hear of one using his rat trap to trap one rat and throwing it away. It is sad, they are wasting that trap, they only used it once! Well, rat traps can be used over and over again, so do not throw them away. I'm an avid trapper, and I thought to myself, "I wonder if a rat trap can trap squirrels." I put my thought to work. Lo and behold it worked, well, sometimes. I wanted to make it better. I quickly then started thinking of mods to make the rat trap more powerful. Adding teeth, bone crushers, and more kill bar strength were my first ideas. It worked, almost to well. I ended up catching not only squirrels, but all kinds of small game. Rabbits, chipmunks, and birds were just some of the animal I trapped. I continued coming up with ideas to make a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap. I decided to put all my rat trap's mods into a small book. Once I finished the book, I had it published. The book turned out to be a hit, for it made a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap!

About the Author Blake Thomas Alma is the author of many books, The Outdoorsmen Bible, Harvesting Nature's Bait Shop, This World can be Cold and Bitter, More Than Just a Rat Trap, and The Godly Outdoorsman's Devotionals. He is always sharing his growing knowledge of his master's creation, the outdoors. A warm smile comes upon his face when he walks through the outdoors. He greatly enjoys Fishing, Small Game Hunting, Target Practice, Survival, Camping, Hiking, Bait Harvesting, ATVing, and outdoor educating. But above all outdoor pursuits, his heart pores out like a might river toward trapping. Perhaps his greatest skill of all of his outdoor pursuits. He is continually growing in the knowledge of trapping and in his master, Jesus, the creator of the outdoors. He also enjoys learning DIY outdoor pursuits. Henceforth, he created The Art of an Outdoorsman. He created The Art of an Outdoorsman so that others may grow in the knowledge of his God's creation too and master that great skill, or art as he calls it, of the outdoorsman. You never know when the stock market might crash or when you find yourself lost in the wood. So why not learn this great art as Blake has and survive like an outdoorsman!

An impressive journey David Henry took to walk a 1,000 miles to talk about climate change By Brian Ettling I am sure you have heard the expression, 'It's not enough to talk the talk, you must walk the walk.' Basically, speaking out about an issue of deep concern is not enough, we must take action.David Henry did just that. He walked over a thousand miles to talk to people about climate change. From June to August 2013, David walked by foot from Boston, Massachusetts to South Charleston, Ohio. It's a distance of 1,042 miles over 60 days. He kept his belongings inside a large covered cart, which people he encountered thought it looked like a giant mailbox. Hence, the title of the book, David and the Giant Mailbox. In 2012, David Henry started feeling restless in his home in St. Louis Missouri that he must do something about climate change. He had read enough news reports about extreme weather and learned enough about the science of climate change from sources like skepticalscience.com. Through his interest in this subject, David learned that climate change is real, caused by human activity currently, it impacting people right now, and we must act fast to reduce the nastiest consequences. It worried David that people did not seem to care. He then discovered how Americans perceive climate change. He read the September 2012 Yale Project for Climate Change Communication published report, Global Warming's Six Americas. This report based on several public opinion surveys notes that Americans fall into six categories of attitudes on climate change: Alarmed, concerned, cautious, disengaged, doubtful, and dismissive. According to that report, only about 16% of the population was alarmed like David. As far as the other 84% the population, David felt angry they were not as alarmed as him. He wrote,"I envisioned all of humanity sleepwalking down a narrow path to the edge of a cliff. That made me pissed. I couldn't just sit back and let it happen. I decided it was time to do something."I can totally relate how David felt in 2012. The same awareness about climate change happened to me working during the winter of 2007-08 in Everglades National Park in south Florida. As I share in my current climate change talks and speeches, I became a naturalist park ranger narrating boat tours in Everglades National Park in 1998. At that time, I knew nothing about climate change. However, park visitors were starting to ask me about this global warming thing and they expect park rangers to know everything. After reading all I could about climate change for years, by the winter of 2007-08, I could not sleep at night working in the Everglades. I felt I had to do something about climate change. To this day, I still work my summer job at Crater Lake National Park. However, I gave up my winter job in the Everglades to return home to St. Louis for the winter. I had no idea what I was going to do in my hometown. However, I knew I had to speak out, write and organize locally to inspire others to take action to reduce the threat of climate change. 16 years later, I am still trying to figure how to take bold action on climate change.Over the years, I have take some bold actions to speak out on climate change awareness and promoting action with lots of public speaking and organizing. However, none of my actions are as brave as David Henry walking over a 1,000 miles to talk about climate changeThe book was a fascinating page turner about David's 1,042 mile journey on foot. It may been been over 300 pages long, but it was a very quick read. The chapters, averaging about 5 to 6 pages long, were basically an account of what happened each day. As an aspiring cross country hiker, I quickly learned that a cross county hike is not easy.David had to confront many busy streets with no sidewalks, intense thunderstorms, sore feet, fatigue near the end, sunburn, trying to find a place to camp each night, flat tires on his cart, etc. With all of the frustrations, he add ask himself multiple times if it was worth it to continue.Friends warned him to be leery of people. However, David found numerous people willing to help him out on a pinch. In his everyday life, David is more of a quiet and reserved guy. Conversations are not always easy for him. Therefore, part of the wonder of the book is seeing David break out of his comfort zone and engage people. The cart shaped like a mailbox was an amazing conversation starter or ice breaker for people he encountered. In walking long distances, David got to experience firsthand the Anne Franck quote:“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."David's quote though was not just to walk to meet people. His big goal was to have a conversation with as many people he could find about climate change. His specific plan was to have at least 100 global warming conversations while he walked across the country. As David shares his stories of the conversations, he provides a great example how to converse with people about climate change. After folks would approach him about what he was doing, David would gently explain he was walking across to create more awareness about climate change. Some folks took a genuine interest, others just changed the subject, some were disinterested and just a few wanted to argue with David in a hostile manner. In the few cases where folks wanted to strongly disagree with David, he would completely listen to them in a heartfelt way. He would then quietly to try correct their misconceptions about the science by quoting such sources as the Consensus Project, which affirmed that 97% of climate scientists agree climate change is hapening and it is mostly human caused.Through the book's recollection of his conversations, David gives a great lesson to not get angry, lecture, or insult the people when he occasionally met people who wanted to engage him in a hostile way. Although he imagined before and during the walk of wanting to grab someone by the scruff of the neck if they dismissed climate change, he never does that. He always tried to find common ground in every interaction while holding on to his conviction that we must act on the climate crisis. From his courage of taking this long journey by foot and his open heart when encountering people, it felt like even the most hard core climate contrarians seemed like they still found a way to like, help, and even admire David. He found other ways to relate to folks when the conversation of climate change was a non-starter. His audacious walk and friendly interactions gave climate doubters a positive perspective that they do not experience when global warming is mentioned on TV or the radio. Thus, he does become a good ambassador for caring for our planet during his trek. From his many interactions, David learned a new faith and optimism for humanity. He witnessed enough good, caring, concerned and open minded people like him that we just may avoid the worst impacts of climate change.David's experience reminded me of a quote from Julia Butterfly Hill. She is best known for having living in a 180-foot (55 m)-tall, roughly 1500-year-old California Redwood tree, affectionately known as "Luna," for two years between December 1997 and December 1999. Hill lived high up in the tree the entire time to prevent Pacific Lumber Company loggers from cutting it down. Julia documented that experience in another book I recommend reading, The Legacy of Luna. The second book wrote by Julia, One Makes a Difference, she proclaimed:"Eternal optimism joined with loving action is the most powerful tool I own."Even if I not able to personally walk across country, David's bold action gave me optimism that one person (I) can make a difference. Even more, his journey showed that people do have enough good and generosity inside of them that we can reduce the threat of climate change.David, thank you so much for writing this book.

Anyone who has travelled by land from Massachusetts to Ohio will enjoy David’s tales of his 1000 mile walk By Kathleen Hull David and the Giant Mailbox will appeal to a wide range of readers, and I found it intriguing on several levels. On his sojourn David met many people with differing opinions on climate change. The repartee in the conversations he had shows a continuum of beliefs and practices. We have a long way to go before any agreement is reached, and thanks to David for entering the fray. He obviously touched many lives, and stimulated some thinking on the subject, including mine.Anyone who has travelled by land from Massachusetts to Ohio will enjoy David’s tales of his 1000 mile walk. In an age where few walk to the grocery store it is almost inconceivable to imagine walking through four states. He faced many challenges finding food, shelter, replacement parts, laundry facilities, and a safe route for his two month trip, as well as battling insects and sore feet. His descriptions of the many trails travelled and his tales of camping exploits whetted my appetite for similar adventures. All in all it’s a story well worth reading.

By Mary Outten David has given us a wonderfully written account of what is is like to step out of our modern digitally-enhanced comfort zone and converse with total strangers. His topic, climate change, is complex and difficult to grapple with in everyday conversation. He writes honestly about the discomforts of walking 1,000 miles. The uplifting conclusion one reaches after reading this is that he found plenty of people who were willing to engage in conversation, and plenty of people who showed quite a lot of compassion and respect for a "climate-walker". Truly inspiring, an excellent example of someone who "walks the talk".

The 1970s have long been a decade regarded with a wary eye by those who never experienced it and a weary eye by those have. The 1960s had come to a shaggy, uncertain end and the only sensible reaction was to find solace in what writer Tom Wolfe termed the Me Decade. Claymont, Delaware, was a typical town in the 1970s. The clothing styles, music, pursuit of recreation and day to day life were no different than what you might find in Haddonfield, New Jersey, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, or Jacksonville, Florida, at least on the surface, but it was also distinctly Claymont as seen through the eyes of one of its more feckless, curious and mischievous junior citizens. Meet his family, Rodney Reeves, Freddie Lang and a host of others, including the inimitably unforgettable Boomer, and their wild and wooly adventures.

Francis is an outstanding biographical book that is well put together & really transports you back in time. Kevin does not hold back & really opens up about some of the nuttiest things he did as a kid during his numerous adventures through Claymont, Delaware & its surrounding areas. He verbally maps out locations & what was going on at the time so that the reader can envision the surroundings of some of the stomping grounds & scenes of silly shenanigans that occurred frequently in these pages. Throughout the book there are neat little side bars about pop culture of the day & other miscellaneous trivia. To say this book is funny would be an understatement. It had me laughing repeatedly & often left me smiling. This is a rare example of a book that is genuinely fun to read, puts real life in the present on pause, & rewinds everything back to the days when kids could always find a way to get into some mischievous excitement. This book really is timeless & brought forth a flash flood of memories growing up getting into goofy adventures in southeastern Pennsylvania & Delaware in the 80’s & 90’s. I thought I was the only guy with some of these types of insane happenings & outrageous acquaintances in their past, but Kevin experienced a lot of the same things & then some… & some more... a real wild ride.

By ELP I know there are many of these "hack" books out there, so I wasn't sure how good this one would be. But you know what? This book is what a "hack" book should be. It has a ton of great and valuable information in a short amount of space. Not sure of the things you'll need while camping or what you'll need to know how to do? It's all here in checklists and bullet-point lists. I especially liked the "Know How" chapter. It had concise info on emergencies, getting lost, how to start a fire, etc. Overall, this is a well-written camping guide.

By Richard Stevens For someone who is looking to get started camping this book has given me a great starter's guide of what's required before I head out for my first venture. Plenty of detail, including ideas of good spots to go, what to expect, and activities to do (far too numerous to list)..The most useful section for me was chapter 2 which was a thorough checklist for me to tick off before I head off. I may also have to take chapter 5 with me in case of emergencies. HahaThe free backpacking guide was also great in giving me a good idea on what to wear and what food to bring on my longer journey. A great supplementary book.

When my husband died at age 31 I joined the young widow club. No one wants to be a member of this club. As I worked my way through day to day of raising a child I was worried that I wasn't being the "right kind of widow". Was I too happy to soon? How long should I wear my wedding ring? How many trips to the cemetery is too many? I received much unwanted advise from well-meaning friends and family but none of it seemed right to me. I tried to find books to read but they all seemed to be written on dead and dying and were written my men. What did they know about being a young widow? With encouragement from my counselor I decided to write my own book. I wanted to tackle many topics that I knew were a bit off beat and maybe others were asking the same questions. I didn't want to burden anyone with a long book. I wanted a quick read and want the readers to feel like they're just talking with a friend about a tough subject. The premise of this book is that you'll read how I got through this terrible situation but you'll find nuggets that you can apply to yourself or a friend. Don't let anyone tell you have to grieve a certain way. It's all individual. I learned this the hard way. You don't have to wear black to be a "good" widow; you can wear lime green and still honor your love while moving on with your life.

While I did have some very limited experiences with music in Memphis, I really wasn't sure I would enjoy this book. I could not put it down until I finished it and I really loved it. Don certainly can tell a story - maybe as well as he can create music. I really recommend this to anyone interested in music but I suspect most anyone would enjoy this book.

I was lucky enough to be in the business part of the music industry during the latter part of this time period. These are some of the best memories of my life. But Don Nix was there from the beginning and is still going strong. Absolutely fascinating life to be there for the birth of that great Memphis sound, then grow into an international writer, producer, arranger for some of the best music legends in the world. I will treasure his book. And to anyone who has the desire to know how it all started, don't miss this must read recollection of a wonderful musician and man.

Full of the Love of Life, the Love of Children, and the Love of Wisdom By Keith DeBrunner I have had the privilege of providing editorial review of this series and I am delighted to see it now in print. This trilogy is a very special story written in a very special way. This is the kind of series I would love to read to my daughter when she was young, like The Chronicles of Narnia. The Legend of Ninja Princess is replete with beautiful prose simply and elegantly written, life-affirming philosophy explicitly given and everywhere underlying, tropes that will make an adult smile and fire the curiosity of the young reader, and a masterfully crafted story line that will keep readers of all ages turning the pages. Master Lee is a master story teller and a master teacher, and includes a glossary, organized by chapter, to encourage any reader to grow and fall in love with our language. I think this book is a must-read for anybody that loves a great story, but especially for young people. It is easy to read, yet rich and deep, and full of love of life, of children, and of wisdom. I encourage parents to get this book and read it with their older children, and to their young ones not yet able to read it on their own. It will be an inestimable gift to them.

O n a par with The Little Prince. Seriously. As an adult, couldn't wait to read next chapter. The thought-provoking prologues are masterful and resonate on so many levels. Progressive, action-packed story drew me in and the subtle learning messages resound long after the end. Kids got hooked immediately and a friend's daughter, a huge Little Pony fan, literally said, “Let's read it again from the beginning!” after pausing to take it in after the last line. Can't say enough great things about this magical series!

The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1910s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, his relationship with his wife, Gloria, his service in the army, and his alcoholism. Fitzgerald presents Gloria as a woman whose vocation is nothing more than to catch a husband. After her marriage to Anthony, Gloria's sole vocation is to slide into indolence; her husband's sole vocation is to wait for his inheritance, during which time he slides into alcoholism. The Beautiful and Damned, first published by Scribner's in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. It portrays the Eastern elite during the Jazz Age, exploring New York café society. The book is generally considered to be largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship with Zelda Fitzgerald.

The windows in the living room of the gray house are wide open patiently exchanging the tainted inner atmosphere of liquor and smoke for the fresh drowsiness of the late hot dusk. There are dying flower scents upon the air, so thin, so fragile, as to hint already of a summer laid away in time." This is the story of a young couple Anthony and Gloria Patch living out their days to the hilt in New York City as they await the death of Anthony's grandfather, Adam Patch from whom they expect to inherit his massive fortune. Gloria is a spoilt child from Kansas City turned into a sophisticated and most beautiful woman. Gloria does not intend to lift a finger to do any domestic work in the home, no matter how slight; while Anthony who considers himself an aesthete, finds it quite hard to get his act together and instead of buckling down to some work, prefers instead to hang with his wife and their friends on nightly binges. They drink and eat in the classiest restaurants and hotels, rent the most expensive apartments, travel out to the West in the spring time driving plush cars, wearing top-of-the-line clothing and just generally living it up high on the hog, as they wait. Meet Maury Noble who is Anthony best friend who spends his time between New York and Philadelphia; Richard Caramel who has just completed writing a book and looking for new ideas for a second one. Joseph Bloeckman from Munich who started out small in America and is now a big shot in Show Biz. Also the quiet Jewess Rachael Barnes and Muriel Kane who is young, flirtatious and sometimes a bit too talkative and Tana the Japanese housekeeper of the Patches. We are shown the Patches at their very best as the novel starts, with the world at their feet and loaded with cash with which they make very expensive choices. But, as we get further in, we see things begin to change gradually and we realize that those very choices will be their very downfall. It was quite a good read but it could be very heartbreaking at times as we put ourselves into the shoes of the main characters. All lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald should read this book if you haven't done so already, and those of you who like reading about the ultra rich in the Roaring Twenties this one is for you. It is the kind of book that you feel you will want to read again. It is that good and I shall miss it.Reviewed by Heather Marshall Negahdar (SUGAR-CANE 10/04/04)

Moral depravity personified By Chris Salzer The genius of F.Scott Fitzgerald shines brilliantly in this vastly underappreciated classic novel of moral depravity. The pervasive themes of Fitzgerald include moral corruption, profligate behavior, agnosticism, selfishness, narcissism, egocentrism, and of course, a sick obsession with money and alcohol. These themes permeate all too well throughout the beautifully written The Beautiful and Damned(pardon the pun).Released in 1922, 2 years subsequent to the seminal This Side of Paradise and 3 years prior to the magnum opus The Great Gatsby, incomprehensibly, The Beautiful and Damned was not well received critically nor financially. As a result, history has erroneously filed it under the dubious sophomore jinx category. Strange it may seem, I vehemently disagree. As you read this book, you witness first-hand the maturation of an amazing writer. No American writer of the 20th Century can compare to the profound power and unwavering genius that is F.Scott Fitzgerald. If you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, you will no doubt enjoy this work - an equally beautifully writen and tragic tale of aspiring morally depraved young Americans in pursuit of The American Dream."Remarkable that a person can comprehend so little and yet live in such a complex civilization."

Teale Nearly ninety years after its first publication, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is still a shockingly relevant account of the entitlement class, the children of the rich or privileged who don't know how to navigate through life without big money. And, it's a New York City novel--written as only a mid-westerner can. It seems to me that because New Yorkers are too much in the middle of it to see themselves clearly, an intelligent "outsider" like F. Scott Fitzgerald must come along. To write as well as he did, Fitzgerald let the city inhabit him. New York got into his blood, and he recorded it in narrative right down to the dirt under the carpet. Fitzgerald's details lead the reader into the depths of the beautiful and doomed couple, the Gloria-Anthony entanglement, as they are part and parcel of the extremes of poverty and wealth (in the World War I era or the roaring 20s).I don't know how Fitzgerald knew what he knew about the human psyche, or specifically about how a young man might react when he is good-looking and swimming in money and New York, but Fitz's life at Princeton University among this set of people gave him the environment in which to observe; Fitzgerald supplied the story around which the narrative coheres. Of course, there are autobiographical elements to this novel--a lot of himself and Zelda--but what the literary art requires is critical distance. To put his main characters through some shameful scenes, Fitzgerald had to know what tough love is in the New York City context. He had to put his couple to the test, people who from birth had relied on the "religion" of charm and money. And the author had more than just critical distance: F. Scott had them down right! Every expression, every word. Gloria: "This is life! Who cares for the morrow." And you can see Anthony deciding to have one more drink, his speech becoming slurred, his manners maudlin. While Anthony and Gloria wait for his inheritance, we find out what they're made of.Most pleasurable about Fitzgerald's craft is his carefully-controlled technique of letting Anthony and Gloria visit hell (the "damned" in the title) while softening the harsh surgery-like light with well-timed, well-handled, lyrical sentences. In a single beautiful line, the passage of the winter sun describes both Fitzgerald's craft and his beautiful couple's descent: Gloria "lay still for a moment in the great bed watching the February sun suffer one last attenuated refinement in its passage through the leaded panes into the room" (p.173). Fitzgerald knew how to show the attenuated and refined way downhill. One more thing about the craft of writing: Only the omniscient narrator technique--which Fitzgerald employs--can show characters in shameful acts and show what they're thinking, and the circumstances in which they got there, and how they "need" money in order to "survive." I wonder if now, in nearly 2010, this novel is not more important than in 1922. More than ever, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is a national portrait. (I can see how "spending" money could be the "sex" in the novel.)Advice: Read this novel while in New York, if possible. The first time I read _The Beautiful and Damned_, I was living near 123rd (me, a Westerner!). I looked up every address in the novel (except for the gray house near Cos Cob, Conn.) and got to know New York through this novel. In fact, I could almost pick out their final apartment in Harlem near 127th.
