For about two decades, John W. Loftus was a devout evangelical Christian, an ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and an ardent apologist for Christianity. With three degrees - in philosophy, theology, and philosophy of religion - he was adept at using rational argumentation to defend the faith. But over the years, doubts about the credibility of key Christian tenets began to creep into his thinking. By the late 1990s, he experienced a full-blown crisis of faith.

In this honest appraisal of his journey from believer to atheist, the author carefully explains the experiences and the reasoning process that led him to reject religious belief. The original edition of this book was published in 2006 and reissued in 2008. Since that time, Loftus has received a good deal of critical feedback from Christians and skeptics alike. In this revised and expanded edition, the author addresses criticisms of the original, adds new argumentation and references, and refines his presentation. For every issue, he succinctly summarizes the various points of view and provides references for further analyzation. In conclusion, he describes the implications of life without belief in God - some liberating, some sobering.

This frank critique of Christian belief from a former insider will interest freethinkers as well as anyone with doubts about the claims of religion.

Loftus' book "Why I Became an Atheist" about a year and a half ago. I found it to make a much stronger, cumulative case against theism - and evangelical Christianity in particular - than any of the so called New Atheist books. As others have rightly noted, Loftus is generally very fair in his presentation of the arguments for and against Christianity. For example, as Loftus notes in his book, he presents the strongest argument available on any given topic made by Christian apologists, so it's hard to claim he's merely knocking down straw men. There was only one problem, to me at least, with the previous edition: in some instances, the editing could have been better, and the writing could have been more clear. The reason I mention this about the last edition of WIBA is to say the new edition has been dramatically improved. And that's saying something, considering how good the last edition was. The editing in this book is better, and the writing is in general more clear and precise, which makes John's arguments easy to follow. As with the previous edition, Loftus is generally very fair in his critique of Christianity. His arguments throughout the book that have received criticism have been updated, and his responses to critiques are, as to be expected of Loftus, thorough. In my opinion, this is the best single volume critique of Christianity at the popular level (although it could be said this book is somewhat above the popular level). In fact, I would recommend this to anyone, Christian or skeptic, as the best single book making a case against Christianity period.I had some doubts about purchasing this book because I owned the previous edition and didn't know if it would be worth the money. I can now say it was definitely worth it. This is now my go to source concerning the arguments for and against Christianity.

32 of 36 people found the following review helpful. the best popular level atheist book By A. Scott John's massively revised book surpasses the original in just about every way (the original was very good, so this is saying something). The sections on explaining faith, the cumulative method, and the reasons why theists reject the classical arguments for god greatly surpass anything in Hitchens, Dawkins, or Harris. Like in the first edition, he also does an excellent job explaining the way apologists use worldview and how his Outsider Test plays into this. On top of these more academic investigations, John explores the Bible (both Old and New Testament) and the historical Jesus. These will probably be more helpful in a casual level discussion of these issues. If one seeks a good introduction to the arguments and nuances of "the God debates", this book is probably the best starting point because it goes over all of the relevant material but is not as technical as something like JL Mackie's classic The Miracle of Theism.

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Wide Ranging and Excellent Overview By Book Fanatic This book is fairly content dense. It is 460ish pages. Of course given its comprehensive scope it can't go into any one topic in deep detail. So this book should be considered wide in scope not deep. It should not be criticized for this because its purpose is to go wide and not deep. I can (and have) read whole books on the individual issues (like argument from evil). If somebody wants to read a whole book on a particular topic they can. That's not the purpose of THIS book. Despite the wide scope, Loftus does an amazing job of distilling the essential points out of each topic. I say all this because a previous reviewer criticizes this book because it doesn't contain book length individual arguments inside itself. This same reviewer has made similar arguments on other book reviews and evidently doesn't see the complete absurdity of such a criticism. I guess he thinks books should be a million pages long. This book by Loftus is heavily footnoted with references to longer treatments by authors on both sides of the issues he is addressing. I have added many books and articles to my list as a result of pursuing his footnotes.Despite the wide scope, its arguments are cumulative. The same point made on one issue usually applies to another so considered as a whole it does indeed make what I consider a quite formidable case. I haven't read any previous versions of this book so I have no idea how this edition compares to those. I do know that THIS edition is very well done. It does an excellent job of giving an overall and comprehensive view of why someone would or should become an atheist.Recommended.

Stephen Crane (November 1, 1871 – June 5, 1900) was an American author. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. The eighth surviving child of Protestant Methodist parents, Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Having little interest in university studies, he left college in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer. Crane's first novel was the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, generally considered by critics to be the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim in 1895 for his Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without having any battle experience. In 1896, Crane endured a highly publicized scandal after appearing as a witness in the trial of a suspected prostitute, an acquaintance named Dora Clark. Late that year he accepted an offer to travel to Cuba as a war correspondent. As he waited in Jacksonville, Florida, for passage, he met Cora Taylor, the madam of a brothel, with whom he began a lasting relationship. En route to Cuba, Crane's vessel the SS Commodore, sank off the coast of Florida, leaving him and others adrift for several days in a dinghy. Crane described the ordeal in "The Open Boat". During the final years of his life, he covered conflicts in Greece (accompanied by Cora, recognized as the first woman war correspondent) and later lived in England with her. He was befriended by writers such as Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells. Plagued by financial difficulties and ill health, Crane died of tuberculosis in a Black Forest sanatorium in Germany at the age of 28.

From the Back Cover

The harrowing title tale from this collection recounts the experiences of an African-American coachman who becomes horribly disfigured after rescuing his employer's son from a fire. A study of race and tolerance as well as the challenges posed by deformity, this major work by the author of The Red Badge of Courage originally appeared in 1898. The last of Stephen Crane's work to be published in his lifetime, the story was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century and acclaimed by Ralph Ellison as "one of the parents of the modern American novel."This volume also features two additional short stories by Crane: "The Blue Hotel," in which a nervous visitor is led astray by his own preconceptions about the Wild West, and "His New Mittens," the touching tale of a little boy who allows himself to be goaded into a snowball fight and attempts to outrun his mistake.Dover (2015) republication of the edition originally published by Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1899.See every Dover book in print atwww.doverpublications.com

About the Author American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

I was fascinated by the brevity and depth of the prose poetry he penned. From there I grew to admire hims as a writer. This is a very good collection of some of his lesser known works but were excellent just the same. And for anyone who has never read his poetry, please download some of the free books and be prepared for whole new experience in poetry. You will not be sorry you did.

About the Author David Williamson is a veteran and retired school teacher. He served in the United States Air Force in Germany and after completion of his military service he returned to college. He graduated with honors in history from the University of Colorado and for twenty years he taught history and geography, and coached football and basketball in public high schools. The last few years of his career he worked as an assistant principal and retired from the same high school he graduated from nearly forty years before. His favorite tool in the classroom was to tell stories. He used them to illustrate and explain history and to entertain students in his classes. Students convinced they would hate history, loved his class, well at least they loved the stories. Retired from teaching, he now writes to give people an opportunity to enjoy his stories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. you'll really enjoy reading this book By Lori Farquhar If you're a fan of such TV shows as "NCIS", "Hawaii Five-O", or "Bones", you'll really enjoy reading this book! While Williamson doesn't divulge all the gory details of the murders, it is clearly evident that they are there. As amateur sleuths Grandpa and Jimmy use their knowledge and relationship, they provide the necessary insight that can only come from reliving memories of the past. This story is well written, with enough ebbs and flows to make you think you've solved the case before the main characters. But, in a way only Williamson can, the plot weaved throughout is full of twists and turns, and surprising revelations. Just when you "know" you've figured it out, Williamson blindsides you with an ending you never saw coming.

Gooding I received this book direct from the author and I'm so glad I had opportunity to read it. The book revolves around 1 of 3 cold cases in Longmont, CO. A teenager comes home from school to tell his grandfather about the cold cases which a police officer spoke of that day. #3 surprisingly involves his Grandpa. As they go to the police to offer information regarding this case from Grandpa's school days, various other surprises begin to emerge. They are like pieces of a jigsaw with clues from the past. The book is written from the view point of the teenager Jimmy. The two have become confidents of the police through the story. Grandpa never jumps the gun but slowly leads the reader through his thinking process, just to reach another surprise twist. I could hardly put the book down. Very fun read in deed

The Mystery Keeps You Guessing By Amazon Customer This mystery has so many twists and turns it will keep you guessing, but the relationship between Jimmy and his Grandfather will remind you of a special family member. Even though there are many bodies in this story, the story does not revolve around sex, blood, and gore. Williamson spins a tale where the mystery is the centerpiece of the story. He makes you want to meet Jimmy and his Grandfather and go with them on their next mystery. Very enjoyable book!

All Three Volumes - The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne Can’t keep all your gods and goddesses straight? Wondering about mythological references in classic literature? Bulfinch’s Mythology offers approachable accounts of ancient legends in a compilation of the works of Thomas Bulfinch, banker and Latinist. This volume includes all three of Bulfinch’s original titles: The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and The Legends of Charlemagne. Bulfinch states his purpose for the book clearly: “Our work is not for the learned, nor for the theologian, nor for the philosopher, but for the reader of English literature . . . who wishes to comprehend the allusions so frequently made by public speakers, lecturers, essayists, and poets, and those which occur in polite conversation.” This compilation was widely used as the authoritative text on mythology in schools for over a century.

Bulfinch's Mythology, by Thomas Bulfinch

About the Author Thomas Bulfinch was an American writer born in Newton, MA. Stephanie L. Budin earned her Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Camden, NJ.

From Charles Martin's Introduction to Bulfinch's Mythology

In his Preface, Bulfinch firmly sets his work within the emerging American genre of self-improvement: Other kinds of knowledge may “enlarge our possessions or . . . raise our station in society,” and there are, of course, books that will tell us how to get rich quickly and how to behave when we have amassed our pile. But, perhaps because he had seen how fortunes may disappear overnight, never to be recovered, Bulfinch puts his faith in the kind of knowledge that can make us “happier and better.” This knowledge is the knowledge of literature, but we cannot understand the literature of our time without first understanding the mythology that literature so often alludes to.

How is this knowledge to be attained? Bulfinch is very certain about his audience. It does not consist of members of his own class, the privileged few who have had the benefits of a classical education and would have acquired such knowledge already or at least have the leisure and the means to acquire it. His audience has never gone with Homer to Troy; the Trojan War is new to them; and they want to know how the story comes out in the end: “Our readers will be anxious to know the fate of Helen, the fair but guilty occasion of so much slaughter.” As Bulfinch must have known, Helen is the creation of the poets who wrote about her, and different poets provided her with different fates. Americans love happy endings, so Bulfinch sees her reconciled at last with the husband she abandoned.

Bulfinch’s audience consists of those with whom he had come in contact during his long and unsuccessful career as a merchant, the self-made men and their wives, who do not want to have to choke down “only the dry facts without any of the charm of the original narrative.” They want the poetry, too, and they don’t have a whole lot of time to spend on getting it.

They want to be sure that this knowledge may be let into the parlors of their homes without creating any sort of offense “to pure taste and good morals.” Here a word must be said about Bulfinch’s prudery: His subservience to his society’s desire to pass over these offenses in silence resulted in a number of significant omissions. It is hard to see how it could be otherwise: The proper Bostonian of Bulfinch’s day, referring to a bull as Mr. Cow, would scarcely have known what to make of Queen Phaedra’s passion for the prize bull in her husband’s herd.

Bulfinch’s readers also want the assurance that this knowledge, so different from their daily experience, is worth having: “To devote study to a species of learning which relates wholly to false marvels and obsolete faiths is not to be expected of the general reader in a practical age like this. The time even of the young is claimed by so many sciences of facts and things that little can be set for spare treatises on a science of mere fancy.” It is not only the time but the energy as well. Bulfinch can sympathize with the tired businessman at the end of his long day in the office: “Thus we hope to teach mythology not as a study, but as a relaxation from study.”

This knowledge, easily acquired and promoting not only happiness but virtue as well, will allow the less privileged members of a restlessly mobile society access to the kind of lore that is the patrimony of the privileged. It is not, Bulfinch states explicitly, “for the learned, nor for the theologian, nor for the philosopher, but for the reader of English literature, of either sex, who wishes to comprehend the allusions so frequently made by public speakers, lecturers, essayists, and poets, and those which occur in polite conversation.” It is a little bit easier than it ought to be to mock Bulfinch’s tone here, but we would be seriously underestimating Bulfinch if we were to regard him as an elitist: His sentiments are as unabashed in their democratic impulse as those of Walt Whitman, in his preface to Leaves of Grass. Bulfinch wishes everyone to have access to the cultural tokens heretofore the possession of the few.

I've read D'aulaire's illustrated classics and Edith Hamilton. It doesn't matter if it's Greek, Roman, or even Norse. I find all of it interesting and fascinating. In fact, my wife is the same way. We hope to pass on this love of mythology to our son, so we are buying him mythology books at an early age, so that when he is old enough to appreciate them, they'll be ready and waiting for him. One book we recently added to our collection was Bulfinch's Mythology.Bulfinch's Mythology is a gorgeous leather edition, with the face of Medusa on the cover. The pages have gilded edges and there is a ribbon bookmark to mark your place. The book contains all three of the original titles, "The Age of Fable," "The Age of Chivalry," and "The Legends of Charlemagne." "The Age of Fable" not only includes Greek and Roman mythology, but brief mentions of Eastern mythology, Norse mythology, and the Druids. "The Age of Chivalry" begins with the legend of King Arthur and his knights, leads into Mabinogen (early British prose), and concludes with the likes of Beowulf and Robin Hood. Lastly, "The Legends of Charlemagne" discusses the paladins of Charlemagne.I skimmed through the parts on mythology and Arthur, as I am very well-versed in those subjects, so for me, the parts on Charlemagne were the best. The legends surrounding him and his paladins were a refreshing read. Were they chock full of history? No, but I didn't expect them to be. They were legends that made for fanciful tales and were a delightful read. The edition of this book was a delight to read and would make a good textbook for the high school classroom or homeschooling parent. So far, I have reviewed two books from the Canterbury Classics and each have been impressive in their quality. Highly recommended.

First the basics - it is a sturdy leatherbound edition with gold leaf pages and a ribbon book marker. The font is a pretty good size (I think about pt 10), making it fairly easy to read. There are also several great classical illustrations throughout the book of the various myths and stories. This is perfect for anyone interested in classical mythology or just looking for a good story. Bulfinch's Mythology covers the Greek, Roman, Norse, and Egyptian myths among others. The book also tells the stories of the Trojan War, Beowulf, King Arthur, Robin Hood, and many others. It is divided into three seperate sections: the Age of Fable, the Age of Chivalry, and the Legends of Charlemagne. This covers a wide swath of mythology to say the least. By reading it you will see where and how writers like Lewis, Tolkien, Scott, Shakespeare, and Milton were inspired. If you enjoyed this I would also recommend The Illiad and the Oddyssey by Homer (also Barne and Noble leatherbound edition) and Edith Hamilton's Mythology.

Excerpt from A Young Folks' History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day SaintsStudying the history of our country creates patriotism and engenders loyalty. For the same reason, a study of the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will implant in our boys and girls a love for its heroes, a loyalty to its principles, and an appreciation of its achievements. By a knowledge of the history of the Church, our young people will prize more highly that heritage given them of God and preserved for them by the sweat and blood of their fathers. The teacher using this little book will understand that it is not exhaustive, but rather suggestive. The teacher should be in possession of much more history than is given here. He should fill in much of the undercurrent of heroism, faith, and devotion exhibited by the characters of the history, very little of which can be given in the text. The importance of this larger knowledge on the part of the teacher will be understood by an examination of the review and questions at the end of each chapter. The aim in these questions is not only to review the facts of the lesson, but by suggestions and reference to bring out more fully deductions and principles. It is believed that by combining the topical and the question methods the best results may be obtained.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "Basic Safe Travel and Boreal Survival Handbook" was compiled for outdoor educators and the Junior Forest Warden movement mostly from articles originally published in "Wilderness Arts and Recreation Magazine" that had become out of print but much sought after. Some of the articles were the basis for Kochanski's "Bushcraft". A small fraction of the book will seem familiar but the rest makes an excellent complement to "Bushcraft" which devotes a minimum of references to actual survival while "Basic Safe Travel and Boreal Survival Handbook" is mostly survival.

Basic Safe Travel and Boreal Survival Handbook: Gems from Wilderness Arts and Recreation Magazine, by Mr. Mors Kochanski

About the Author Mors Kochanski is known throughout North America for his extensive work in outdoor education, survival and wilderness living. His enthusiasm for wilderness recreation, his extensive knowledge of the field, and his desire to learn everything there is to know about the wilderness has made him one of the foremost authorities on wilderness skills. Mors Kochanski has been an outdoor educator and survival instructor for over 40 years, twenty three of which as a sessional professor for the University of Alberta; a few months of which were at the Canadian Department of National Defense Survival School at Jarvis Lake, Alberta. For many years Mors instructed courses at the Blue Lake Centre run by the Alberta Department of Culture Youth and Recreation, and finally 17 years for the School District 59, at Dawson Creek, British Columbia to the benefit of thousands of elementary school children. All the while, this tireless scholar did copious research, freelanced as an instructor, and wrote numerous magazine articles for Alberta Wilderness Arts and Recreation Magazine, various popular aid-memoir booklets and the instant classic “Northern Bushcraft” (now known as Bushcraft). This is just a handful of Mors’ outdoor education accomplishments to preface his new book that is published by Karamat Wilderness Ways. Today, if a course or instructor has any solid foundation in modern survival skills or Bushcraft, the odds are that they are likely based on a teaching, a skill or idea that Mors had some input in developing – whether they know it or not.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Good information By Bible packer Mors Kochanski is one of the understated "dirt teachers" of this era. Since he specializes primarily in the further Northern regions, and COLD climate survival he has not received the widespread reputation of many others more diverse instructions. Still his life experience in the most inhospitable climes of the frozen North is the best available. His blending of modern materials with "old wisdom" puts him in a unique place between the die-hard traditionalist and the modern materials ultra-lite obsessed outdoors person. His idea for the "super shelter" combinations these two worlds all with one goal in mind- safest and most enjoyable enjoyment of the wilderness. Good read with Common Sense approach to getting away from modern "civilization".

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Must-have book for practicing or teaching bushcraft skills By Anthony Nester The book that every woodsman should have written by the Gandalf of Bushcraft. This is comprehensive tome on shelters, bush tools, firemaking and more. The author even goes into research on fasting and what determines when you should live off the land or refrain. A true classic especially for those who teach outdoor skills or long-term wilderness living.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This book should be in every survivalist's library By Dom If you live in a boreal forest area, this should be your bible. Even if you don't live in such an area you can learn from this book. There are years of firsthand woodlore knowledge gleaned from one of the most respected living legends of bushcraft compiled in one volume. Everything authored by Mors Kochanski should be studied by every student of bushcraft. I definitely and highly recommend this.

Mildred “Millie” Milby is born during a bitter winter storm in Moriarty, New Mexico Territory, in 1908. Two years later, her family moves to Milton, Oregon, where her father starts a grocery business.

But when Millie is just nine years old her mother tragically passes away, and, although her father Arthur eventually remarries, the family is never the same.

When Millie is fourteen a spat with Arthur’s second wife turns ugly, and Millie is sent away to boarding school where she is forced to work in a laundry to pay her room and board.

But in spite of her strained family relationships and meager finances, Millie refuses to give up her dream of attending college. She flourishes in high school and manages to scrape enough money together to enroll at Spokane University.

This is only the beginning of a compelling life that would see her survive the Great Depression, raise three children, and lay to rest two husbands.

A remarkable story of struggle and perseverance, Anthem for Millie is a loving daughter’s tribute to an uncommon common woman.

Bruce Ford has done it all in professional rodeo having won or placed at virtually every big-time venue on his way to five World Championship Bareback Riding titles. He qualified for 19 National Finals Rodeos, the year-ending "Superbowl" of rodeo, including 18 in a row. He was the first cowboy to win over one hundred thousand dollars in a single event in a year and one of the first to amass over a million dollars for a career. He rewrote the record book before he retired as he broke or tied all the bareback riding records. He was still competing and winning at the ripe old age of 46. In WALK LIKE A MAN Bruce tells it like it was on the rodeo circuit. In his own words he describes the action, the travel, his pardners, and the pranks they played on themselves and others while living and loving the grueling life of a rodeo cowboy. His reflections on the good times and the bad give a clear image of his strength of faith, why he always believed in surrounding himself with like-minded winners, and why in any discussion of the greatest bareback riders of all-time Bruce's name invariably tops the list.

HatcherPublished by Pretty Face, Inc.August 2015“ISBN 978-0-9965927-1-0 (ebook)” “By the time they find the bodies, I will be far away.” Excerpt From: George Hatcher. “Woman in Jeopardy.” iBooks. So begins a Who Done It? style of writing that brings back the memory of old pulp fiction of the 1940 -50’s. There is glamor and filth in just enough mixture to keep you turning the pages. The crimes are very graphic, in the style that only books done by secret publishing houses who sold books like these on the Down Low. It all fits for that how this book comes across. You have a dame, name Carmen who reluctantly plays the heroine, and you learn where she came from to get that way. Like many hispanic women, she is trapped by circumstances beyond her control. Yet she fights to survive and keep her family safe. First it was her younger sister Elena she fought to keep innocent. He sister though is a spitfire of her own, and soon enough makes her preferences for the life she wants clear. So Carmen with no way to control her sister tries to get the new husband (and her former lover) to do right by her. Woman In Jeopardy takes you back to the 1920’s and on during prohibition and after. The years of and the life of Francisco the main man whom all this circles around her like a bad rogue moon. Graphic sex and graphic death fill this book but not overly so. Enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and to exhaustion by the time you are finished. Worthy of the pulp price that it is for digital download.Nancy LouiseOctober 10, 2015

By Amazon Customer Hatcher is a gifted writer and this is clearly obvious in his book, “Woman In Jeopardy.” The author plot moves with a smooth pace while pouring on enough suspense to keep the reader turning the pages to find out what happens next. The dialogue is realistic, and the diabolical mindset of Francisco, the key player, and Carmen, the underdog were vividly portrayed with Hatcher's ability to create sympathetic characters that raises this novel to the next level. Although not all of the personalities are given equal treatment or enough stage time to become fully developed, those that are such as Elena, Manuela, Milton and his sister Delores, prove that the author has the skills necessary to craft a story with protagonists the audience can like, hate and relate to. In addition, Hatcher obvious yet never heavy-handed messages about the strength of Carmen’s love for her sister, that she sacrificed herself to protect her, and in the end, did what was necessary to revenge her death, without a second thought, give the novel added depth. Overall, it is a book that grips you and doesn't let go until the last page has been turned.

By Mac Author Anonymous I picked this up thinking it was going to be your run of the mill mystery with a detective sleuthing out who did what. But this is not a whodunit. This is a story told not from the perspective of the clueless detective, but rather of a victim who decides not to be a victim any more. The book presents a small time gang boss and the town under his thumb, set just after WWII. So here is the question the book poses for the reader-Will Carmen get away? On top of becoming a murderer herself, she has a million and one reasons to run. An unexpected book, that takes surprising turns. It is The Godfather meets Sarah Connor (from the Terminator.) It's all about a guy who won't take no for an answer. And the woman who has had enough. It is a great read. Kept me riveted from beginning to end.

By GeoX There's a good reason that this is commonly used as an introduction to Balzac: it's one of his best and most focused works (not that I've read them all, of course...). He wasn't a wholly consistent author (and neither would *you* be, had you written 120+ novels)--at times, he can be downright tedious. Not here, though: Old Goriot is a fast read, and utterly gripping. The character of Goriot is handled quite delicately: Balzac plays mercilessly on our sympathy for an old man victimized by his daughters (intentional shades of King Lear here). It's not a uni-dimensional depiction, however; as Goriot's boundless love seems at times to go beyond the merely paternal--he may be a Christ-figure, but he's certainly not a straightforward one. Of course, the real show-stealer here is Vautrin, the master criminal. As much as Balzac fancied himself a historian, he was really at his most entertaining when he went over the top, as he does here: Vautrin is wonderfully demonic, and one can't but get a kick out of reading him. In contrast to these twin personalities, which tower above anyone else in the book, you have the titular protagonist, Eugene de Rastignac, a perfectly ordinary sort of guy--your archetypical 'young man from the provinces'. He provides a good counterpoint to all the madness going on, and you can't help but like the guy, even if he's not really an extraordinary person.Anyway: you should read this. Yes--YOU. I mean come on, you really ought to read at least one Balzac in your life. And if you like it, you can go on to Lost Illusions and Cousin Bette. Highly recommended.

In terms of the variety of characters it introduces and the themes covered, it is a novel of incredibly wide scope, written with efficiency and some of the most beautiful prose, at least via Marion Crawford's English translation.Goriot is an elderly gentleman living in a Paris boardinghouse in 1819. He used to be a prosperous vermicelli merchant, but hard times of late have forced him to pawn off his remaining precious possessions and move into the cheapest room available in the house. Since running afoul of the landlady Madame Vauquer, whose romantic attentions he once spurned, he has become an object of ridicule to the other boarders, due to his shabby clothes and apparent senility. Most of the novel's action, however, centers around another of the boarders, a law student named Eugene de Rastignac who comes from a modest family. Rastignac's situation and motives are easy for any urban young man to identify with: He is eager to climb into the upper echelons of Paris society, but he finds to his dismay that the fashionable Parisian women are not interested in paupers. His wealthy cousin, Madame de Beauseant, advises him that he must be ruthless to make it in high society. With his cousin's help, Rastignac acquaints himself with two young society matrons, Anastasie, the Countess de Restaud, and Delphine, the Baroness de Nucingen, who happen to be Goriot's daughters.Goriot's relationship to his daughters provides the basis for the novel. He spoiled them rotten as little girls; consequently, they grew up irresponsible, greedy, and ungrateful. Having married wealthy men, they both seek consolation from their unhappy marriages through reckless spending and extramarital beaus. Despite their faults, Goriot loves and cares for his daughters with something more like a neurotic obsession than warm, paternal devotion. You can't help feel sorry for the guy, suffering from his delusions, selling everything he owns, and living in squalor so that his daughters, who are unable or unwilling to fend for themselves or fight their own battles, can stay financially solvent. There is an interesting subplot involving another boarder at Madame Vauquer's house, a devilish, unscrupulous fellow named Vautrin who may not be what he initially appears to be. Vautrin knows Rastignac is trying to get his foot in the door of Parisian society and he knows he needs money to do it. He proposes this scheme: Rastignac will marry a poor girl dwelling at the boardinghouse named Victorine; Vautrin will have Victorine's brother killed so that she'll inherit the whole of her father's fortune, which will bring Rastignac into big money and high society, and he can pay Vautrin for collusion. The way Balzac plays out this scenario without letting it become an interference with the main story line of Rastignac's relationship to Goriot's daughters is quite a deft feat of plotting.

Done by Ellen Marriage for the Dent collected edition of Balzac at the beginning of the 20th century, it can be best described as workwomanlike but anachronistic. There are too many stilted passages and archaic word choices of the "Gadzooks" type.A better choice is Raphael's version for the Nortion series or even Marian Cooper's in Penguin, though it was done 50 years ago.The yarn itself is one of Balzac's best, though you can find dissenters (Martin Turnell, no fan of Balzac, calls it one of his worst in THE NOVEL IN FRANCE). To be honest, the best of Balzac is not as good as the best of Flaubert, Stendhal, or Proust, but given his ability to keep the reader turning pages in spite of ragged prose and melodramatic excess, GORIOT is still "living literature" and a classic of French literature.

By Debbie A quick reading book that gets to the heart of the author's intent to entertain the reader with what it was like growing up in Minnesota as a small child through adolescence. Many emotions flow through the book, from happiness and contentment, to sorrow on the loss of family, but there is always a hopeful thread that follows the story. This book has great insight as a prequel to the later years of the author's life that she wrote about in "A Talisman Against Despair."
