By Vicky Boura The story of Trinity continues and seems more interesting now that the plot has been twisted...Many questionmarks that need to be disolved. It's a nice book, I hope it will keep my interest to the end. One remark only which I hope is going to be fixed. The language is supposed to be French (and this what is written in the amazon page) but maybe the coding is in English, because only the English dictionary is activated. It is as it expects that the words are English and I cannot "make" it see it otherwise even if I choose the French to Englih dictionary as default. I didn't have such problem with the "La femme sans peur (Volume 1) (French Edition)".

But the Grid has been infiltrated by parasitic shadows that feed off the negative emotions of humans – an epidemic called “the madness.”

D’Vinid, a dejected musician, is consumed by his personal problems. But when he meets Brigitte, who has arrived in Atlantis from the dreamclans, a chain of events is set in motion, showing D’Vinid he has an important role to play. He is among those born with a gene, that can unlock the mystical powers once believed to be the birthright of all humans. Soon he is faced with his own awakening, and the shocking realization that Atlantis could be experiencing the end of its days.

Review "If you are a lover of high fantasy, this is absolutely a book you should pick up and try out. The stakes are of biblical proportions and characters unique and intriguing. This book is not a waste of time." Reviewed by Amy Richardson -whatisthatbookabout.com"Mara has successfully written a story way ahead of its time so masterfully that you can imagine yourself amidst the futuristic setting as you read her words. It's a rather fresh take on the age old idea of fusing science fiction with mystery. The book will leave you wondering if it's all a work of fiction, or whether a future of such proportions is really possible." -seriousreading.com"An absolutely fantastic read that had me turning the pages obsessively from the very beginning." -Readers' Favorite "Shadows of Atlantis is more than fantasy or mythical fiction. Nohavec After reading Mara Power's new book, Shadows of Atlantis, I must say it is one of the best books I've read in a long time. As a huge J.R.R. Tolkien fan, Shadows of Atlantis develops a rich and complex history, background, character development, and world setting, analogous to the creation of Middle Earth. Combining aspects of real world history as described by Plato and Ignatius Donnelly, it is amazing, impressive, and obvious how much real-world research Mara has done into this marvelous account of ancient Atlantis. One truly amazing aspect of the book is how well Mara ties in actual history with a very plausible and entertaining tale of suspense, romance, and novelty. Science, engineering, plot twists, character depth, and mythological history are all intertwined beautifully in the book for a seamless reader experience. Reminiscent in many ways of the worlds of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and even J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Mara does a beautiful job of tying fact and fiction together in such a way as to convince the reader she has solved the mystery of Atlantis and the ancient world. It is abundantly clear how much effort went into this book, not only in historical research of Atlantis, but also very plausible technological (think Elon Musk) aspects of an ancient civilization destroyed and great knowledge once known, and then lost.In between the lines, I was impressed by what, in my opinion, hinted at aspects from the famous prophecies of Edgar Cayce, and even theories of mystical and metaphysical beliefs often found in Eastern philosophy. As the reader progresses through the book, Mara does an outstanding job of building the characters, introducing and creating a rich world from its beginnings to the present, and leaves the reader breathless in a lush adventure of lust, betrayal, suspense; along with an amazing cliff hanger at the end!I look forward to her next book in this epic series!

By Scarlet Amor I remember when Mara Powers was writing the last chapter of the rough draft of "Shadows of Atlantis" - we busted out a bottle of champagne to celebrate, not knowing at the time what a huge hit this book would become to be. Years later I finally got to purchase the finished novel and I simply cannot put this story down. The characters are so rich and detailed I can feel them step off the pages. I love how she weaves in New Age mythology with the epic tale of Atlantis in a way that makes this ancient world feel tangible and realistic. I haven't felt this way about a book since I read "The Mists of Avalon"! Bravo, Mara Powers. I'm hooked and cannot wait for book two! ~ Scarlet Amor, author @ [...]

Caring for an elderly parent can be extremely challenging. The role reversal involved is emotionally and intellectually demanding, and many caregivers find themselves unprepared to undertake such a difficult task.

In Trading Places: Becoming My Mother’s Mother, author Sandra Bullock Smith shares her personal experiences spending ten years caring for her ailing mother.

This heartfelt look at the trials and tribulations of that decade offers powerful insight and encouragement for anyone entering into a similar period of life. Smith’s touching stories share the heartbreaking, and sometimes comical, moments she experienced while providing assistance to her aging parent—and how they mirrored similar events from her own childhood.

In a very real sense, the two women traded places. Smith found herself uttering phrases she heard all too often as a child, such as, “Don’t give your food to the dog” and, “You’ve had enough sugar today.” Smith began jotting down the things she said, and thus this charming book was born.

Filled with respect, compassion, and love, this uplifting and amusing memoir is for anyone involved in elder care or who may face the role in the future.

Review "Highlighting a mix of well-known and personal household phrases, Smith accompanies them with a flurry of hilarious stories that compare the experiences of her aging mom to Smith's childhood." - IndieReader.comAnyone who has had to care for an elderly parent knows first hand how daunting that task can be. Yet amid all the trials and tribulations, there are moments--precious gleanings--of joy and pure laughter. That said, Smith's memoir capitalizes on these precious gleanings from her decade-long role as a caregiver for her mother.Smith's debut offers lightheartedness to an otherwise somber aging and end-of-life process. Smith's narrative reflects on moments when the familial table turns and she spouts out the same maxims her mother once used on Smith during her childhood. Laying the groundwork for her account, Smith opens with 16 valuable life lessons passed down to her from her parents, which play a key role in helping her "deal with being a caregiver." Smith quickly draws readers into familiar territory when she includes lesson topics, such as "Honesty is really the best policy," "Crying is good for the soul," "Forgive and forget," and "Do unto others," to name a few.Continuing to connect with her audience, Smith's chapters are replete with her down-to-earth writing style. Highlighting a mix of well-known and personal household phrases, Smith accompanies them with a flurry of hilarious stories that compare the experiences of her aging mom to Smith's childhood. While readers will quickly recognize adages such as "Are you going to sleep all day?" "Turn that down!" "Stand up straight!" and "Hang up your clothes," Smith also provides a handful of illuminating lines, such as "Huh is not a word," "Can't never could," and "Did you want that hair color?"Smith closes with another set of lessons learned that incorporates helpful caregiver tips. Although respectfully dedicated to the life of her mother, Smith's memoir serves a great purpose:  "For all you wonderful children who provide loving care to a parent, I hope this book gives you a laugh, a smile and a little inspiration. You already have had enough tears.                      -- IndieReader.com Trading Places: Becoming My Mother's Mother, A Daughter's Memoir is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read. -- Reviewed By Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' FavoriteTrading Places: Becoming My Mother's Mother, A Daughter's Memoir by Sandra Bullock Smith is a true story. Sandra finds herself in the position of having to look after her mother, a role reversal she hoped would never happen. Looking after anyone is a challenging process, even more so when it is your own parent. Sandra takes us through the years that she looked after her mother, years that were hard to bear, but years that she wouldn't give up for anything. She provides us with deep insight into what it takes to care for a parent, the similarities to her own childhood, moments that are sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking. This book is not to be missed by anyone who is in the same situation or who may have to make the same choices in the future.Trading Places: Becoming My Mother's Mother, A Daughter's Memoir by Sandra Bullock Smith is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read. It made me think about my parents, both in their seventies looking after my granddad in his nineties, and it made me realize just how much they do for him and how much it affects their own lives - not that they would change anything! Sandra made me laugh at times and she made me cry, bringing home a real sense of compassion with plenty of advice for those of us who may be faced with the same in years to come. The book was written in a way that made it easy to follow and very easy to sink into, a way that makes you know you are not going to put it down until you have finished. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are looking after your elderly parent or not.

What a wonderful way to leave a lasting memory of your loved one for future generations to come, in order to know them. It is so important to write these things down while we can. As a healthcare worker myself, I found the advice given spot-on. I know from working with Hospice patients that they do so much better with family involvement, especially in the assisted living and long term facilities. The stories were humorous, entertaining and did leave me in tears a few times. The home photos added throughout the book made it personal and easy to relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to terms with caring for the elderly, anyone interested in creating their own family legacy book or anyone who just wants to curl up on the couch with a good book.

My mother is 80 and luckily, healthy and living on her own but this book made me think about what might be in store for us if we are blessed to have her with us as long as Ms Rebie lived. Sandra and her siblings' devotion to their mother was inspiring and a reminder to pay attention to the important things in life. It really moved me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a short story about family, love and support to a loved one in need. It made me smile, brought tears to my eyes and made me reflect on the journey many people are on in caring for their loved ones. Sandra is a talented writer and storyteller. Thank you for sharing your journey with us Sandra. Well done!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book!! By Sheryl S. Lum This is an incredible book! It is a quick read that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. The author gives you a peak behind the curtain of care giving as she takes you through her journey of being her Mom's care giver over a span of 10 years. Sandra exposes the joy and frustration of care giving all the while trying to maintain her mom's dignity and self worth. She even shares that tough decision making process of having to put her Mom in assisted living. This is a very poignant book with the final pages of the book on Lessons Learned being priceless! In this "sandwich generation" that we live in this is a must read book about care giving.

We take great pleasure in presenting to the attention of students and investigators of the Secret Doctrines this little work based upon the world old Hermetic Teachings. There has been so little written upon this subject, not withstanding the countless references to the Teachings in the many works upon occultism, that the many earnest searchers after the Arcane Truths will doubtless welcome the appearance of this present volume. The purpose of this work is not the enunciation of any special philosophy or doctrine, but rather is to give to the students a statement of the Truth that will serve to reconcile the many bits of occult knowledge that they may have acquired, but which are apparently opposed to each other and which often serve to discourage and disgust the beginner in the study. Our intent is not to erect a new Temple of Knowledge, but rather to place in the hands of the student a MasterKey with which he may open the many inner doors in the Temple of Mystery through the main portals he has already entered.

So I downloaded a sample of this ebook to my google phone to see if this version was right for me.This ebook uses a clear, easy to read font type. Paragraphs wraps around well. However, The title of each chapter is at least twice as largeall caps, which sometimes doesn't work out well on portrait mode. It has a table of contents that is hyperlinked, but it is listed by number only. Not as useful when you don't know that the chapter is for! It contains no pictures, but I wasn't expecting any. Finally, the price is about the same as others, but I give it three stars. Now about this book. This is very insightful guide to the principles underlying hermetic. Each of the seven principles is presented and discussed in an easy to understand manner. However, to apply these principles to your life is another matter. This book is not about the practice of hermitic, but about the primal philosophy that transcend mysticism and religion. It is an invaluable addition to your library, but only if you are ready for it.This is the table of contents for this book:1. The Hermetic Philosophy2. The Seven Hermetic Principles3. Mental Transmutation4. The All5. The Mental Universe6. The Divine Paradox7. "The All" in All8. Vibration9. Polarity10. Rhythm11. Causation12. Gender13. Mental Gender14. Hermetic AxiomsThe author(s) of this book, who we know only as Three Initiates, starts out describing the fundamentals of the hermetic history and philosophy. Then it briefly introduces the seven principles of hermetic, setting a framework for further discussion:I. The Principle of MentalismII. The Principle of CorrespondenceIII. The Principle of VibrationIV. The Principe of PolarityV. The Principle of RhythmVI. The Principle of Cause and EffectVII. The Principle of GenderPrior presenting each principle, Three Initiates builds up the necessary knowledge to understand it better. For example, concepts of "Mental Transmutation" and "The All" are discussed before starting with the Principle of Mentalism. Each principle is explained with some detail, and multiple examples. Finally, Three Initiates advices us against the pursuing Knowledge without expressing it into Action, which otherwise becomes a vain affair. In the last chapter, it summarizes the previously presented principles and briefly explains how to approach them. This is a book that belongs to every mystical library, but paradoxically, not the first that a new student of hermetic should approach. For that purpose, I would recommend Initiation into Hermetics by Franz Bardon or The New Hermetics: 21st Century Magick for Illumination and Power: paperback or kindle version by Jason Augustus Newcomb. However, the philosophical content in this book is approachable from any mystical foundation, not just hermetics. As such, buy it because eventually you will find it in your path to mysticism.

Dechantal Smartly written, The Kybalion is not a book that you read all at once but it is more of a study book that was originally written in 1908. There are seven principles explained in this book: mentalism, correspondence, violation, polarity, rhythm, cause and effect, and gender. For what appears as though it would be a hard read, it really is not. Very thought provoking!

Todd Randall spent his life pushing the limits: stealing a pack of cigarettes and a beer and coming home smelling like tobacco and cheap beer; “borrowing” his father’s car, usually to screw girls in the backseat; snorting lines of OxyContin after a knee injury on the football field, eventually landing in rehab at the age of seventeen. Now he spends his days in his uncle’s auto body shop, struggling to stay clean, and refusing to get close to anyone because he fears he is unfit for human consumption. When he meets Shawna Clifton, for the first time begins to see himself differently, and even though it scares the hell out of him, he feels compelled to reach for the life she offers. But just as Todd dreams he can have more, their relationship is challenged by a tragedy that forces them to decide what is really important.

The Wisdom to Know the Difference, by Leesa Freeman

About the Author A native Texan, Leesa Freeman enjoys escaping the chill of New England, if only in her imagination, often setting her stories in the places she loved growing up. Some of her favorite moments are the ones where it's just her, her Mac, and simply conversing with the people who live inside her head, and sharing their lives with those who take the time to read her stories. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters, where she is also an artist, an avid baker, and a self-proclaimed music snob.

Either quick, or I was just really enthralled and completely could not put the book down. A very unique and interesting way to deal with some difficult subjects. I really enjoyed the author's detail in many aspects of the book-really brought the characters to life!

But, alas, it was over. I became attached to the characters and wanted more of them. Leesa's style is relaxed and comfortable. The reader is engaged from the first chapter. I hesitated to get this book because it's not my genre of choice (I prefer Koontz, Patterson, Connelly, etc.), but I was pleasantly surprised and immediately hooked. I look forward to reading more from this first-time novelist. Read more about Leesa at [...].

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully crafted story... By Gaele It is difficult to explain the connection to a protagonist who seems to be fueled by guilt and shame, and doesn't believe that he has grown or changed. That is exactly what happens when you delve into this book, and pass the first chapter. Todd is, in his own words, not fit for human consumption. A recovering addict, with all of the associated baggage he is an incredibly sympathetic character and the source of the book's point of view. With a steady and relaxed hand, the author has woven a story that places you inside Todd's head, able to feel the panic when his fears overwhelm him, celebrate his highs, and wallow in his lows. From his own perspective, Todd is far less likable: so entwined in the shame of his addicted self he has yet to realize that life is full of second chances and opportunities.I was immersed in this book, not wanting to put it down. Todd was so beautifully crafted and developed, that he was instantly present and he developed into a far more attractive character as the story went on. The book shows his growth change, rather than looking back on all that `may have been', this is a book that captures the entire struggle of a life in transition and does it with heart and skill.Beautifully voiced and story line that will grab hold of your thoughts, this debut novel is one that shows great promise of more to come from this author.I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review on my blog, I am, Indeed. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

‘The book of Enoch is one of the strangest of the books left out of the Biblical canon. Filled with goetic angels and demons, and visions of inconceivable lands beyond the sky…’

The Book of Enoch the Prophet

Translated by the late

Richard Laurence

Modern research sees in the Epistle of Jude a work of the second century: but as orthodox theologians accept its contents as the inspired utterance of an Apostle, let us diligently search the Hebrew Scriptures for this important forecast of the second Advent of the Messiah. In vain we turn over the pages of the sacred Canon; not even in the Apocrypha can we trace one line from the pen of the marvellous being to whom uninterrupted immortality is assigned by apostolic 1 interpretation of Genesis v. 24. Were the prophecies of Enoch, therefore, accepted as a Divine revelation on that momentous day when Jesus explained the Scriptures, after his resurrection, to Jude and his apostolic brethren; and have we moderns betrayed our trust by excluding an inspired record from the Bible?

Reverting to the second century of Christianity, we find Irenæus and Clement of Alexandria citing the Book of Enoch without questioning its sacred character. Thus, Irenæus, assigning to the Book of Enoch an authenticity analogous to that of Mosaic literature, affirms that Enoch, although a man, filled the office of God's messenger to the angels.  Tertullian, who flourished at the close of the first and at the beginning of the second century, whilst admitting that the "Scripture of Enoch" is not received by some because it is not included in the Hebrew Canon, speaks of the author as "the most ancient prophet, Enoch," and of the book as the divinely inspired autograph of that immortal patriarch, preserved by Noah in the ark, or miraculously reproduced by him through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Tertullian adds, "But as Enoch has spoken in the same scripture of the Lord, and 'every scripture suitable for edification is divinely inspired,' let us reject nothing which belongs to us. It may now seem to have been disavowed by the Jews like all other scripture which speaks of Christ—a fact which should cause us no surprise, as they were not to receive him, even when personally addressed by himself." These views Tertullian confirms by appealing to the testimony of the Apostle Jude.  The Book of Enoch was therefore as sacred as the Psalms or Isaiah in the eyes of the famous theologian, on whom modern orthodoxy relies as the chief canonist of New Testament scripture.

Origen (A.D. 254), in quoting Hebrew literature, assigns to the Book of Enoch the same authority as to the Psalms. In polemical discussion with Celsus, he affirms that the work of the antediluvian patriarch was not accepted in the Churches as Divine; and modern theologians have accordingly assumed that he rejected its inspiration: but the extent to which he adopts its language and ideas discloses personal conviction that Enoch was one of the greatest of the prophets. Thus, in his treatise on the angels, we read: "We are not to suppose that a special office has been assigned by mere accident to a particular angel: as to Raphael, the work of curing and healing; to Gabriel, the direction of wars; to Michael, the duty of hearing the prayers and supplications of men." 2 From what source but assumed revelation could Origen obtain and publish these circumstantial details of ministerial administration in heaven?

I Enoch and the Bible By benjamin I find it absolutely fascinating the controversy that this book has created.Concerning whether or not this book should be incorporated into the so-called "canon," I do not feel that I am qualified to speak. However, I would like to attempt to clarify a few of the supposed contradictions between I Enoch and the Bible. As far as 2 Peter 2 goes, the context of the passage on angels (v. 11) is that angels do not blashpheme God in the same way that humans do (see the Peshitta translation of the Bible by George M. Lamsa - it is a bit clearer). When it comes to Jude and his epistle, the idea of his quoting Enoch sarcastically is absolutely assinine - just read the Epistle of Jude.Timothy names Jesus as the supreme intercessor between God and man. In a more general sense of the word, however, there were many people who acted as intercessors between the people of Israel and God (such as Moses, the greatest of all the prophets next to Jesus!).Finally, Jesus said that in Heaven - or rather, in the world to come - people would not marry each other. However, according to I Enoch, the angels had sex with humans, which did not necessarily involve being married to them.Concerning the "mythical" aspects of Enoch, they are no more "far fetched" than anything in Scripture.I Enoch is absolutely fascinating. Enoch is assumed up into Heaven, travels through the Heavens, is told secrets of the coming judgment and the messianic age, sees the workings of Heaven, and pronounces judgements upon the wicked angels.Although I do recommend that one reads this book since it does, according to Jude, contain prophecy, I recommend it most of all for the sake of improving one's education. Whether or not you believe that it should be in the Bible, it is an important piece of literature and even if it isn't accepted as Scripture by most people, that doesn't mean that it is any less important or worthy of one's time or attention. As far as this translation goes, it is a bit outdated (which is why I only gave it 4 stars). If you can afford it, buy:Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Vol. 1: Apocalyptic Literature and Testaments.Otherwise, this or the R. H. Charles version will suffice.

Review of The Book of Enoch the Prophet By A Customer I agree wholeheartedly with the scholars who say that THE BOOK OF ENOCH has been tampered with. There are two kinds of verses in THE BOOK OF ENOCH. Verses that are very closely related to the Bible and verses that seem to be mostly folklore. Even though the book has some folklore in it; it should not be ignored. The verses that are closely related to the Bible are worth paying attention to because they re-iterate some of the most basic teachings in the Bible. Teachings such as not oppressing our fellow man and not forgetting to pay attention to our Creator. A good example of the folklore in the BOOK OF ENOCH is the super- natural birth of NOAH in the first part of Ch. 105. Some of the interesting things in the BOOK OF ENOCH are: (1) GOD had wanted to completely break-up the Earth and create another asteroid belt around the SUN but ENOCH asked him not to do it so he didn't do it. (Ch. 82- 83). (2) The Overview of Earth's history from Creation until beyond the Final Judgement. (the footnotes provided are very helpful). (Ch. 84-89). (3) EVE gave birth to many children. (84:4-12). (4) I've never before heard King Saul's life summarized as the one "...who had laid aside his glory." (88:69,71). (5) The "elect", who are mentioned in both the O.T. and N.T., are mentioned 25 times in THE BOOK OF ENOCH. (1:1,2,7;6:9,11... 61:11,14,15). The judgements in THE BOOK OF ENOCH basically agree with the judge- ments in the Bible. The quality of paper and size of type in this paperback are above average. In Ch. 104:10,11 it speaks of those who will rejoice because books of joy, integrity and great wisdom will be given to them. I too rejoice because I have a copy of this wonderful book.

120 of 135 people found the following review helpful. Review of Laurence's Enoch By A Customer The Book of Enoch is a hodgepodge of various materials. I find the mythology of the first eighteen chapters more exciting than some of the relatively opaque cosmological and apocalpyptic sections that follow (though the prophetic parts are suggestive). The story of the revolt and defeat of the Watchers is beautiful and tragic mythology which will appeal to anyone interested in fine literature or curious to learn more about angels or the "giants" frequently (and confusingly) mentioned in Genesis and other OT books. Laurence's translation of Enoch (the first translation into English after the Ethiopic text was discovered by a Scottish adventurer in the 18th century) has been criticized as inferior. If you are looking for precision of translation, you had best seek more recent versions. But if you are looking for a good read (Biblical and moving rather than scholarly), you can't do better than Laurence. His is by far the most poetic translation, beautifully punctuated in a unique style influenced by early English translations of the Bible. Enjoy--and may Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Sarakiel, Uriel, Phanuel and the other good angels watch over you.

Can the medical examiner really glean all the information from a dead body that's portrayed on forensic television shows? In this book, Dr. Cumberland gives the reader a look into the life of a real working medical examiner and the types of death cases that routinely come through his morgue. The author uses actual cases from the hundreds of autopsies he has performed in Mobile, Al, and Pensacola, Fl, to explain basic principles and procedures used in death investigation in a way that is both entertaining and educational. Cumberland's gift for storytelling and his ability to explain complex issues in everyday language make this book not only readable but enjoyable for both teenagers and adults.

By Beverly M Byrd As a retired physician, I thought this was written for the lay person so he could understand all the terminology. It was excellent and I would recommend this jewel to anyone who is curious to learn what a medical examiners does. Also to let people know that TV shows like CSI are not truly what happens in the real world.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Engaging and brutally honest. By T. Herndon I really enjoyed this book. It was engaging and brutally honest--two traits of a good forensic book. I liked Gary from the start and although I winced a couple of times at his honesty, I realized that I saw some of the same politically incorrect traits in myself. And that was how he kept me reading. I would definitely buy another book by this author.

Love the author's appropriate humor for what could be some very morbid situations, Being a RN and having visited the "morgue" a few times I can appreciate the technical skill and expertise required as well as the personal commitment to do the best for the deceased and family.

PDF Ebook Rising from the Shadow of the Sun: A Story of Love, Survival and Joy, by Ronny Herman de Jong

This second edition of Rising from the Shadow of the Sun, A Story of Love, Survival and Joy exemplifies the power of positive thinking, of hope, of perseverance even in the most perilous and life threatening situations and of a mother's love for her children, surpassing even the tragedy of death. Jeannette Herman-Louwerse, Netty, a young mother incarcerated by the Japanese on the island of Java during world War Two with her two little girls Ronny and Paula, endures starvation, harsh punishments and diseases for almost four years. They barely survive. In a secret diary, at the risk of being tortured and killed had it been detected, Netty writes letters to her parents in the German-occupied Netherlands, and gives an accurate historical account of the Japanese invasion and the lives of women and children interned under the brutal regime of the Japanese. She describes the years of physical and psychological suffering, but also the hope, faith, solidarity and resilience that keep the imprisoned women alive. Netty's husband Fokko, a pilot with the Dutch Naval Air Force, stationed in Surabaya, escapes with his squadron hours before the Japanese submarines encircle the island. Working under British command in Sri Lanka, Fokko’s story is chronicled along the same timeline as that of his wife and children; he, too, survives. Ten years after the war Ronny continues her education in the Netherlands. She earns a degree in English from Leiden University and marries an ambitious young man. After the birth of two daughters and a son they emigrate to California in 1972. The close-knit family serves as a strong basis for the ups and downs in Ronny’s life. Setting goals and fulfilling dreams, Ronny frequently visits her parents in the Netherlands; she translates her mother's diary and based on that publishes her first book In the Shadow of the Sun in 1992. After her father passes away the bond with her mother grows even stronger. The first edition of Rising from the Shadow of the Sun, A Story of Love, Survival and Joy, published in 2011 includes Ronny's memoir and the Japanese War Crimes Files. This second edition commemorates her mother's life.

From the Author When my first book, In the Shadow of the Sun, based on my mother's journal and published in 1992, was out of print, but people kept asking me for more copies, I realized that the subject of women's suffering in Japanese concentration camps during WWII in the Pacific was unknown to many.People in general know a lot about WWII in Europe, the Holocaust, and about the military war effort in the Pacific, but virtually nothing about the civilian camps for men, women and children and the cruel treatment of the prisoners by the Japanese Imperial Army in Southeast Asia. When I found out about the NARA Files, the top secret Japanese War Crimes Files declassified in the year 2000, I knew I had to re-tell the story and add this valuable information for the whole world to know. The 1942 liquidation plan of the Japanese Ministry of War was stated in Exhibit O : Death for all prisoners of war in all camps in occupied Southeast Asia, to commence in September of 1945. That meant my life was saved by the bombs! I herewith thank all the veterans and deceased military who fought so courageously and gave their lives for the rescue we so desperately kept hoping and praying for.Rising from the Shadow of the Sun, an autobiographical historical memoir, if I may call it that, details my mother's love and our survival of the concentration camps followed by vignettes of the wonderful, joyous life that has befallen me since. At the time of its publication in March of 2011, my dear Mamma was 101 years old and very happy that our second book had seen the light. She received the very first copy.

From the Back Cover An inspiring story about the human spirit and the resiliency that can be found in families and even little girls.- Elizabeth Norman, PhDRonny's strong and engaging voice brings clear understanding of the physical and psychological suffering that interned women endured during the Japanese occupation.- Virginia Colangelo, MARising from the Shadow of the Sun reveals human greatness and depravity through the eyes of a little girl and her courageous mother. Ronny's life glows like a lunar rainbow of perseverance and hope. It's a testimony to the abiding strength of family and love.- James Williams, MATRonny's direct, matter-of-fact narrative is optimistic, revealing her abiding faith that love, determination and positive willpower can overcome adversity.- Ray Newton, PhD

About the Author Ronny Herman, born and raised in the Dutch East Indies, survived four years in Japanese concentration camps with her mother Netty and her little sister Paula during World War II on the island of Java. After the war a degree in English literature from Leiden University in the Netherlands and an impromptu wedding became the basis of a happy and exciting life in the United States, culminating in US citizenship in the year 2005. She has resided in New York City; Pasadena, California; Hilo, Hawai'i; and Prescott, Arizona. Her secretarial career dates from 1961 in Rockefeller Center, New York to 1974 in California, where she worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada-Flintridge for a contractor of NASA. After further training and education Ronny became a fashion model and commercial actress in the greater Los Angeles area. For six years she served as a patient-care Hospice volunteer for Verdugo Hills Hospice and was moderator of her church. Almost twelve years in Hilo, Hawai'i provided an opportunity for her to perform as a hula dancer and volunteer with Hospice of Hilo as secretary to the Board. She also finished the manuscript she had been working on for three years. In 1992, her first book, In the Shadow of the Sun was published by Vanderheide Publishing Co. LTD. in Canada. An interview at Schiphol Airport by a Japanese journalist resulted in an article about her book in the Hokkaido Shimbun Press in Japan. Ronny's second book, Rising from the Shadow of the Sun, A Story of Love, Survival and Joy, a sequel and personal memoir was published in March 2011 by Booklocker.com. Currently residing in Prescott, Arizona, Ronny is a member of the Professional Writers of Prescott (PWP) and the Society of Southwestern Authors (SSA). War and a Mother's Love and a Daughter's Remembrance By Foster Corbin "Sticking his bayonet through the gedek (bamboo fence), the Japanese soldier aimed to kill me. He missed." With those two stunning and memorable first sentences, Ronny Herman de Jong begins her narrative of the time that she, her mother Netty Herman-Louwerse and her sister Paula, who were citizens of the Netherlands, spent in a Japanese concentration camp on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies from March, 1942 until they were freed in August, 1945. Her beloved father Fokko spent the time away in the Dutch Naval Air Force not knowing if his wife and children were alive or dead. RISING FROM THE SHADOW OF THE SUN is this amazing family's story. Aided by her mother's secret diary (published here in its entirety) that she kept during this awful times, written in Dutch of course that Ms. de Jong later translated into English, the author tells this harrowing little-known story, another from World War Two, that is a horrific picture of life in a concentration camp but, much more importantly, a testament to the endurance of the human spirit. In Part One (In the Shadow of the Sun) Ms. de Jong, using her mother's diary and memoirs in addition to the diary, tells of her parents' marriage, the births of her and her sister Paula, the invasion by the Japanese of Java, the years of living in the camps away from her father and their happy reunion with him at the end of the war. Part Two is the author's autobiography and memoir. After the war, she got a degree in English literature, married her husband Mike in 1961, and is the mother of three children. She and her family have lived in California, Hawaii and now Arizona. She has worn many hats: a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, an actress (appearing on TV in "Archie Bunker"), a hospice volunteer, a hula dancer, an author of course, and lastly someone dedicated to keeping alive and teaching the world the story of one brave woman as well as the 100,000 or so other Dutch citizens who were detained by the Japanese in internment camps, many of whom perished. Ms. de Jong became a U. S. citizen in 2005. We welcome her!As the saying goes, an apple does not fall far from the tree. Netty Herman-Louwerse was no slouch as a writer herself. Her secret dairy, although certainly never intended for publication, is beautifully written. As I read it, I kept thinking of the dairy of Anne Frank that I read many years ago. Netty gives a day-by-day account of the lives of her and her small daughters: what they ate, what they wore, the games the children played as well as her own feelings and her own isolation from her husband and parents. (Even in these direst of circumstances, however, she rarely complains.) "I never looked at the moon so much in my life. . . I can count with it, and know that another month has gone by. It is the only thing we wish for: that time may go by quickly."Netty works diligently to make life as normal as possible for her young daughters. They celebrate birthdays. Ronny learns cross-stitching. And-- putting a lump in this reader's throat-- this little girl sometimes saves her peppermint candy for her "Pappa" until he returns home and puts it by his photograph. Netty sometimes sleeps in her husband Fokko's pajamas, "which gives me a nice feeling." But I had to smile when she complains about the expensive "bad-tasting American margarine. (My own beloved grandmother in East Tennessee was a staunch opponent of the "awful stuff," preferring to churn her own delicious and beautifully yellow fresh butter.) And this strongest of women, who apparently could do most anything, wasn't sure she could fry chicken that a friend in the hospital had requested so she got someone else for that task and fried potatoes and made rhubarb sauce for him. Of course there are the many illnesses and hospitalizations that Netty and her girls endured, many of them caused by malnutrition: Ronny's diphtheria, Netty's amoebae dysentery, the measles, the flu, and hunger edema. The children were skeletal and near death when they and their mother were happily reunited in November, 1945 with Fokko whom the children did not remember as he had been separated from his family since March, 1942.Ms. de Jong ends her must-be-read narrative with the celebration of her beautiful mother Netty's 101 birthday. I wish I could have given her a dozen tulips for the occasion. I am grateful that through the efforts of another beautiful woman, her daughter Ronny, I got to get a glimpse of this amazing woman. I suspect, however, that she would just have seen herself as an ordinary person just doing what she had to do in a time of great adversity. And finally, surely you have to love anyone who says at the age of 101 "I will sleep like a rose."

Nelson A Lesson in Human EnduranceRonny Herman de Jong's book, "Rising from the Shadow of the Sun," is many things: a journal of a mother, Netty (Jeannette Herman-Louwerse) who survived a Japanese extermination camp, her husband's military story, and their daughter, Ronny's reflections on her own life in context of her parents'. These three major "characters" bring unique points of view about the experiences of a family during the Japanese invasion of the island of Java, in the Dutch East Indies. However, the combination of the three in one book is like looking into a prism with many faces. In the final analysis, the stories blend into one another and the reader gains a much fuller, richer view than she would with only one perspective.Part One, "In The Shadow of the Sun," is Netty's first-hand account of her four-year experience in the camp, with added information about her husband Fokko. Ronny de Jong herself was only three years old when the Japanese invaded. She, her mother Netty, and her sister Paula were imprisoned for most of four years, from just after Netty's journal begins in November, 1941, until August, 1945, when the Japanese capitulated. Thus Ronny is a character in her mother's story. While de Jong does not bring direct memories of this period to her autobiographical piece, we often see her in Part One through the eyes of her mother. This double perspective gives even greater depth to the story. One portion in particular near the end of the journal shows Ronny as "now six years old, . . .the long years of living in a camp and malnutrition had put their stamp on her. She, too, showed signs of edema" (210). Despite Ronny's own physical weakness, she is seen on the same page as helping her little sister, Paula, who is even more malnourished, to stand. In fact, Netty writes about both of her daughters through the passing days--birthdays, games with friends, the ordinary turned frightening and stark as the little girls grow up in imprisonment. Throughout the journal we see Netty's strength and resilience in the face of hunger, edema, bed bugs, skin infections, lice, maggots, and malaria. We also see the development of both daughters, and we witness Ronny's emergence as a sensitive and stalwart girl who loved her mother and sister and longed for the return of her father and the reconstruction of her family.De Jong's autobiographical account in Part Two, "Rising from the Shadow of the Sun," describes her life after the war as a "roller coaster" ride. Ultimately she moves to the United States with her husband and three children. This section is punctuated with the repeated refrain "Life couldn't be better."All told, this is an important work which provides significant stories about the victims of a lesser-known part of World War II in Southeast Asia. As with "The Diary of Anne Frank" and Elie Wiesel's "Night," we marvel at Netty's courage and strength in caring for her daughters throughout this catastrophic period. We experience her husband's enduring love, and after the horror has passed, their daughter Ronny's affirmation of life. "Rising from the Shadow of the Sun" is an important account of courage and hope.Nancy Owen Nelson, PhDMemoirist, poet, college professor

The word survival seems a contradiction placed between words such as love and joy, but the mother and her daughters did survive the most hopeless of conditions. There was joy both before and following the story of their extraordinary survival at the hands of merciless Japanese captors during World War II.The author and her younger sister had a mother who would see them through daily deprivation and fear and yet she kept a diary that spoke of courage, even optimism. I’ve given her much thought and wondered if Nettie was able to do so because this was a journal meant for the eyes of the father and grandparents who were forced to miss the early years of her two daughters. It was a lesson in the importance of journaling so that specific periods in our lives are not forgotten nor the lessons lost. Written mostly in first person, the story and images came alive for me. These are the stories which need sharing, the truth of our history.I was reminded of how resilient children can be—even while living with starvation, insecurity, and constant fear—as long as they feel secure while enveloped in a parent’s love. Many survivors are unable to relive the painful memories long enough to write about them. Such is the case of a dear friend of mine who spent four year of her young life in a prison camp. But Ronny Herman was very young during those traumatic years. Nettie’s first-person account takes the reader into the midst of horror. In a far different time period and setting, Nettie also might have become an author. This is a story not to be missed—one exhibiting the remarkable strength of the human spirit, of one mother’s determination to win the battle she faced daily to protect her two daughters.

Calling Sri Sathya Sai Baba a philanthropist and social reformer would be akin to calling Lord Jesus a shepherd and Bhagawan Krishna a cowherd! One definitely cannot turn a blind eye to His magnificent work – tertiary healthcare systems, water projects, housing projects, and educational university, which are first-of-a-kind in world history. He has also inspired service activities around the globe with a footprint in over one hundred and fifty countries. He is definitely a social reformer, but He is also much more. His greatest work is the transformation of the heart, which He has effected through pure, selfless love. Once the source and nature of this Love is understood, one cannot help but call Him divine, adding the prefix ‘Bhagawan’ to His name. This book details the life experiences of eighteen students and teachers of Bhagawan’s educational system, which ranges from ‘KG to PG’ (kindergarten to post-graduation). This is just a sample of those that have received ‘Higher’ learning from their Swami – a learning for life. But, this sample will give us a glimpse into what Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba stands for and what He exhorts. It will make it amply clear that it is never too early, or too late to embark on the greatest quest of life – Educare.

By Jerry Clyde Phillips Until coming across his name in a list of Pulitzer Prize winners for fiction, I had never heard of Ernest Poole. My curiosity was awaken and I added his Pulitzer novel to my reading list. I searched all the neigborhing libraries for a copy but was unsuccessful, so had to purchase a copy from an out-of-print book dealer advertised on ... I found that my resolve to read the novel, as well as the unexpected expense in securing a copy, was well worth the effort. The novel is set in New York City during 1913-15, just as war has erupted in Europe, and deals with the family of Roger Gale, a successful businessman. Gale is a widower who has raised, with varying success, three daughters. Each of the sisters is selfish: the eldest is overly concerned with her immediate family; the second is overly concerned with the social inequalities of the masses, and the youngest is overly concerned with pleasure and the accumulation of luxury; each is blind to anything that disturbs their own world view. The character of each of the three gives Poole full license to allegorize concerning the social ills of his day. The main conflict within the novel is that of the individual family contrasted against the human family, or the mass of immigrants that had recently transformed the City from urban gentility into a modern metropolis. The strenghts of the novel are Poole's character development and his use of dialogue. Each of the major characters in the book are honestly drawn and become alive in the pages of the book: each acts and speaks as would be expected. The major flaw is Poole's overly rhetorical ending (common in novels of this period) and his irritating verbatim repetition of the theme of the novel: "you will live on in our children's lives." The reader is forced to endure this thematic recapitulation at least two dozen times. It is as if the author feared that his readers would not "get" his message and wanted to be sure that they ruminated on the question of immortality.Although the book will appear to some contemporary readers as being "old fashioned" and dated in terms of technique and style, His Family offers an unique view into the life of an upper middle class family in the New York City of the early twentieth century. For anybody interested in the social history of America during one of its most dynamic periods, I would recommend this novel.

Lovely glimpse of the past By Shannon Byrd Poole's book tells the story of aging patriarch Roger Gale and the lives of his three daughters - Laura, with her reckless abandon and zest for life; Deborah, with her fierce devotion to the tenement schoolchildren she assists; and Edith, the mother of five whose entire world revolves around her children. Roger sees their lives change - some for the better, some worse - and how it affects his own life. This is a wonderful story which reminds me at times of E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime, in that it encompasses the scope of life in early twentieth century New York, and the lives of the people who inhabit it. The descriptions are vivid but never too cumbersome; the characters are all very real, and the plot flies by. By the end, I came to care about what happens to these people, and found I was sorry when it was over.

The Changing Society Of The Early 1900s By Dave_42 "His Family" by Ernest Poole was published in 1917 and became the first novel to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1918. Though an interesting work, it falls short of his better known "The Harbor" which was published in 1915. The novel picks up on the story of Roger Gale in the later part of his life, well after his wife (Judith) had passed away, and it deals with Roger's relationships with his three daughters (Edith, Deborah, and Laura) as well as their relationships between each other and those important characters in their lives. Most of the novel is written from the viewpoint of Roger, although from time to time Poole switches perspective to someone else to give the reader a better understanding of their perspective.Poole uses this novel to comment on the changing society of the times in which it was written. The three daughters represent three different aspects of women. Edith is a woman who is a wife and mother, completely devoted to her family and children. Deborah is a woman who is focused on her career, even to the exclusion of having a family of her own. Laura is a woman who is focused on herself and her own needs. Together these aspects seem to represent the whole of Roger's deceased wife Judith, and their arguments and disagreements with each other may well represent the internal struggle that women have. The other key element to this story is the external forces and pressures which come to bear on the family. The illnesses, the tragic death of a loved one, the financial pressures, the Great War, and the social mores of the time all are factors which have an impact on this family. An interesting note with regards to the latter aspect is that the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was given out to the play "Why Marry?" (a.k.a. "And So They Were Married") by Jesse Lynch Williams which deals with much the same issue, though in a humorous way.As with "The Harbor", "His Family" would probably feel slow moving to today's readers. One key difference between the books is that in "His Family", Poole noticeably revisits the same themes in this one, which feels forced and gives it a repetitive feel at times. As a result, I can not give this as high of a rating as the previous work, and instead would put it just slightly above average. It is difficult to judge whether or not this work should have received the first Pulitzer, as I am not sure what other works would have been considered, but this is certainly a decent novel when one keeps in mind the era in which it was written.
