Prince George, the infant son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, better known as simply William and Kate, has only one destiny: he is going to be King of England sometime later this century. Every aspect of his life – and that of his little sister, Princess Charlotte – has been planned down to the last detail. The Royal Household at Buckingham Palace has even made arrangements for his State funeral, even though he is barely two years old. They already know which school he will attend; it will be Eton, just like his father before him, and which university, which William and Kate want to be St Andrew’s in Scotland where they both studied and where they first met. From now on, everything George does will be subject to scrutiny by the highest authority at Buckingham Palace: the friends (boys and girls) he will be permitted to have, the sports he will be allowed to take part in and, of course, his gradual introduction into the never-ending round of Royal public engagements. This fascinating book reveals all in the most precise and accurate detail. * * * Brian Hoey has written 26 books about Britain’s Royal Family including the only official biography of the Princess Royal, the Queen’s only daughter. As a former radio and television reporter, he has interviewed many members of the Royal Family including the Prince of Wales, Prince Philip and the late Diana; Princess of Wales. He was also part of the commentary team at the wedding of Diana and Charles in 1981 and again, in 1997, at Diana’s funeral.

A WIDE VARIETY By Books R Best I was unsure whether I could / should review this book as I contributed a couple of stories, but then I reasoned that there were so many more to read it deserved a review. The subjects ranged from one side of the world to the other and gave a wide flavour of different genres and experiences. There were a couple I did not enjoy, I felt they did not fit in too well with the rest of the book thus the reason for only 4 stars.

Interesting and varied selection of travel tales By Kaydee Amazingly varied selection of travel highlights covering numerous countries, different aspects of travel and very varied writing styles. A great opportunity to delve into the lives of a number of published authors and enjoy their journeys. Definitely made me want to read more of their work too. It was a terrific book to be able to dip in and out of when I didn't have large chunks of time available to be able to read a book from cover to cover.

A very interesting and enjoyable collection of 'shorts', some of them very short but none the less impactful for that (I particularly enjoyed Graham Higson's and Jacky Donovan's offerings), some of them rather longer and really catching the flavours of countries like India (Gareth Nixon) and Thailand (Doug Jones). There really should be more books like this, go on Mr Fear, knock out another one!

“Historically important, insightful, and hugely entertaining”

— Debra Di Blasi, author of Drought and Prayers of an Accidental Nature

“Bold and frank, Crime A Day tells Joe DiBuduo’s story of growing up poor and hungry, of the redemptive power of love, and one man’s ability to change his life of circumstance to a life of choice. A fascinating glimpse into the seedy underbelly of mid-20th Century America." — Michaela Carter, author of Further Out Than You Thought

By turns unsettling, witty and tragic, Crime A Day exposes the harsh consequences of childhood poverty, educational deprivation and social marginalization. DiBuduo went from a hard-working 6-year-old paperboy to a 22-year-old ex-con with a history of incarceration spanning nearly a decade. An unforgettable memoir about tough gangsters and hard drinkers, corrupt police and cynical judges, and the hungry, hardscrabble kids who survived “Hano”— once Boston’s roughest and most impoverished neighborhood.

Nelson The title of this memoir reflects the irony of this narrative, which follows in detail the path of a young boy who spends much of his first two decades of life committing petty theft and felony. Happily, the narrator never experiences the electric chair, but he tells of men he knew who faced it in the Cook County Jail in Chicago. The narration is in an unabashedly direct and colloquial voice and relates the hunger of his childhood which led him to steal as young as six years old. The narrator emerges throughout the narrative as (ironically) a kind-hearted person who loves children and animals but who will not turn away from a fight when challenged. We see him gradually give up the life of crime for a life of family, art and writing. I recommend this book for its rendering of the harsh reality of the “other life” of poverty which many do not experience or realize.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Necessary Tale, Warts and All By Roderick J. Williams This memoir is a sometimes harrowing, sometimes funny, thoroughly engaging account of DiBuduo's impoverished upbringing in the Hano neighborhood of Boston in the 1940s and 50s. The narrative is brisk and deceptively easy to read (I literally almost couldn't put it down; finished it in two nights); "deceptively" because the writer takes a matter-of-fact, unsentimental, and unapologetic look at the brutal effects of growing up poor and hungry. Most of us have an intellectual understanding of what "being poor" means, but this story hammers home the raw experience of being born into a disadvantaged environment and a dysfunctional family. What struck me as most chilling about DiBuduo's descriptions was his nonchalant, that's-just-the-way-things-were, we-didn't-know-anything-different tone throughout the book. Theft and violence and deprivation and hopelessness formed his ideas of "normal," with no context or clue that a better life might be somewhere outside his immediate neighborhood. And unfortunately, it translates to our modern times: poverty in the world's wealthiest country remains an ugly stain on our national pride, we're still having discussions and mixed emotions around the tactics and prejudices of police officers, we still use our prison system to warehouse rather than rehabilitate. That DiBuduo survived his childhood and adolescence, and has even thrived in his later years, is a testament to his core decency, his resilience, and his open heart. This is one of my top five books of 2015. It's not a pretty story, but it's a necessary one.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You Have to Read This Book By Rae Lynn Wow! This was a moving and enlightening book. Reading it reminded me of how I felt when I read Angela's Ashes...a glimpse into a life of poverty-- of being downtrodden and deprived and abused, and ultivately of survival and redemption. Joe had an innate goodness and ethicalness that was--in the end--strong enough to lead him away from a life of crime and drug and alcohol abuse. Do you think you could have pulled away like he did? I don't know if I could have, and lots of folks don't. If you have any bit of compassion, this book will open your heart even more. Children are still going hungry and being deprived in our country and, of course, all over the world, so Joe's story might give us all an idea of what they are going through, and what they may yet go through. You won't regret reading this book. It is well written and easy to read...a page-turner, really.

Capturing in rich detail the freewheeling sixties, One Minus One explores a young woman’s journey toward self-realization following a painful divorce. In 1969, thirty-year-old Emily Bean moves to a town in New Hampshire’s coastal region to take a job as a high-school teacher. Struggling with the challenges of single life and still in love with her ex-husband, David, Emily attracts the attention of local radio personality Warren, and also Cliff, the head of the high-school English department, who might perhaps take David’s place in her life. Just as the town must inevitably change with the times, Emily must try to make a new future even as she longs to recapture the past. Book Lust Rediscoveries is a series devoted to reprinting some of the best (and now out of print) novels originally published from 1960 to 2000. Each book is personally selected by NPR commentator and Book Lust author Nancy Pearl and includes an introduction by her, as well as discussion questions for book groups and a list of recommended further reading.

One Minus One (Nancy Pearl's Book Lust Rediscoveries), by Ruth Doan MacDougall

About the Author Ruth Doan MacDougall, whose father wrote novels and hiking books, began writing stories of her own at the age of six in her hometown of Laconia, New Hampshire. She never stopped. Today, she is the respected author of deeply felt novels about the lives of women, including The Cheerleader, her acclaimed coming-of-age bestseller about a teenage girl in the 1950s, which launched her acclaimed Snowy Series. A recipient of the New Hampshire Writers’ Project’s Lifetime Achievement Award, MacDougall continues to write novels and to update her late father’s hiking books. She is happy to say that she is still madly in love with her husband of fifty-five years and explains that her novel One Minus One came about when she tried to imagine what her life would be like if they ever divorced. She lives in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire.

Schoonover The sixth installment in Nancy Pearl's Book Lust Rediscoveries series ONE MINUS ONE was originally published in 1971 and is set a couple of years earlier apparently around 1969. The novel tells the story in first person of a young woman named Emily. Emily is thirty and a childless housewife/unpublished author who is left desolate when her teacher husband divorces her for the high school guidance counselor. She dusts off her own teaching credentials and finds a job in another part of her home state of New Hampshire teaching English. During her first year in the new area she dates two local men one of whom dumps her for a younger woman and one who is a nice guy who wants to marry her. But Emily is still "stuck" on her ex-husband and her life with him. Will she be able to move forward with her life? This is a character driven novel and readers not even born when it was first published will be able to relate to Emily, her friends, family and problems. The book also stands as a genuine slice of small town New England in the late 1960's. Many readers may smile when they see the salaries the characters were earning in that era, the prices paid for many items in those times or the excitement Emily and her roommates express when their new apartment has avocado colored appliances. The importance of television and television commercials to the characters is often referenced. Some readers may also want to force the cigarettes Emily and her fellow teachers are constantly smoking (even in the teacher's lounge at school) out of their hands. Like all the volumes in Nancy Pearl's Book Lust Rediscoveries the book begins with a thoughtful introduction that includes why it was chosen to be reissued for the series and ends with a few discussion questions as well as several suggestions for further reading. I plan to continue to read all of Nancy Pearl's choices for Book Lust Rediscoveries and though I missed the one preceding ONE MINUS ONE, THE COWBOY AND THE COSSACK it is now loaded on to my Kindle.

By Agnes O'Neil I love Nancy Pearl and have read many good books on her recommendations but this one is a head scratcher. Emily is divorced, pining for the husband who left her for another woman, and trying to make a life for herself as an English teacher in a small town. But for someone this provincial, she thinks and talks like a much more experienced woman, something hard to find in 1969. I kept waiting for the point of it all, but it was just one long boring depiction of her sad life and her inability to move on.But you, dear reader, SHOULD move on.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A slice of life of someone who hasn't learned how to live By S. Lionel In Nancy Pearl's introduction to "One Minus One", she writes, "... there are four main doorways through which one can enter (or be drawn into) a work of fiction: story, character, setting and language." Pearl cites character as her "dominant doorway", so it's not astonishing that she likes Ruth Doan MacDougall's works so much - at least if One Minus One is an example. The story of Emily Bean, newly divorced, resonated with me in some regards as it made me think of my own divorce some 27 years ago. Many of the emotions Emily feels are those I recall, not without some pain. That the story takes place in my neck of the woods, more or less, gave it some added relevance, though all of the towns where action takes place are fictional, and while the area of the story is allegedly near the southern New Hampshire seacoast, the flavor of the towns, architecture and people are solidly northern NH.While I thought the writing was strong, and the characters definitely brought to life on the pages, I could not help but get irritated at Emily and her inability to let her failed marriage go. Obviously this bothered Nancy Pearl as well, as she alludes to it in her introduction. After I read the book I passed it on to my wife, who grew up in northern NH - she not only was annoyed with Emily, saying that she needed a therapist, she also found the depiction of the people and landscape a bit too "close to home" for her comfort."One Minus One" is a "slice of life" story - it doesn't really go anywhere, the characters don't grow and nothing gets resolved. Such stories are not my favorites, but they can be good if they're done right. I might have liked it better if I could muster some sympathy for the protagonist - but I couldn't.

My goal here was to deal with the offensive approach, more precisely with the numerous possibilities through which you can score goals. Goal that, in fact, emphasizes the value and the efficacy of a team. The means described may be used both in training children and teenagers as well as senior footballers, amateur or professional. The choice and their use remains to be decided upon by each instructor or coach. The book is divided into 4 distinct chapters: exercises and tactical combinations for scoring, tactical paths, tactical games and schemes for fix phases. Next to each exercise or scheme the dimension of the execution surface is mentioned, alongside the number of players, necessary auxiliary materials and the phases of execution are detailed. I want to stress that the arguments tackled are not purely theoretical, they were practically experimented in numerous training sessions that I have conducted or viewed/witnessed. Also, it is not compulsory to apply them word-by-word, each coach having the possibility of giving them a personal interpretation when he wants to put them in practice. The terminology used in sports in general, in football in particular, was enriched once words were borrowed from languages of countries with a developed football, like English, Italian or Spanish. That’s why, I considered it necessary to explain in “Legend” some of the expressions employed. If 10% of the material presented in this book was used by youth club coaches or by professional coaches during training/teaching, it would mean that the aim I wanted to arrive at was reached.

Very comprehensive list of training activities for teaching your team to score By Vlad Ungureanu If you are looking to teach your team to score, this book is full of ideas. It contains all possible kinds of training activities (drills and games) for scoring a goal, from drills involving 1-3 players to tactical movements of the whole team and training games from 2 vs 2 to 11 vs 11. It also covers set-plays. I don't think you can find anywhere a more comprehensive list of activities for teaching a team how to score.

I love comics as an art form and a communication tool. And I love following Blue Water Comics' Female Force series, in which the biographies of famous women are told in words and pictures. The series really shines with its political figure titles, which offer a balanced look at their subject matter. And that has to do with the writer, who authored most of them. Aside from the Female Force titles, they're releasing other biographical series that make for interesting reading.

Otelo (Spanish Edition), by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

Growing old isn’t all that funny. Except sometimes it is. Claire Flatowicz, author of a column in the wildly popular Momaha blog published by the Omaha World-Herald, has collected her favorite everyday thoughts and ponderings into a humorous, thoughtful, and fun book. Her readers enjoy the wit, perspective, and honesty in her columns, and we think you will too. In her slightly irreverent and pleasantly sarcastic tone, Claire examines marriage and family, illness, friends, work, politics, religion, and holidays and finds the lighter side of every subject. Claire proves that family quirks and eccentricities are universal, no matter your age, geography, or personal situation. You may see someone you know in these stories, or you may even see yourself! Curl up with a cup of coffee and Seeing the World through Rose-Colored Trifocals and enjoy the ride!

Seeing the World Through Rose-Colored Trifocals: No-Nonsense Observations on Getting Older, by Claire Flatowicz

Review "An inherently fascinating and thoroughly absorbing read from beginning to end, Seeing the World Through Rose-Colored Trifocals: No-Nonsense Observations on Getting Older is very highly recommended and certain to be an enduringly favorite acquisition for community library collections."-Midwest Book Review, January 2016"Perhaps the best way to summarize Claire's book is to call it a conversation. A conversation that is familiar, that covers  a number of topics that are all important to us at different phases in our lives, and a conversation that the reader is welcome to join any time. It's why it totally works when she writes about flabby arms in one chapter, and about Auschwitz in another. She can go from her shoe-addiction to funerals, from getting pulled over on her way to a grandchild's birth to her own children's medical challenges. That's how conversations are supposed to work, we sit down with a cup of coffee and cover the heavy stuff that happens in our lives, as well as the hilarious."-Annette van de Kamp-Wright, The Jewish Press, January 9, 2016

About the Author Claire Gummers Passer Flatowicz was born in New York City, daughter of a father who was a Holocaust survivor and a mother who was able to escape Germany before World War II. She has lived most of her life in Omaha, Nebraska. She was an elementary school teacher for 23 years. Claire is the mother of three children and step-mother of two daughters. She has five grandchildren, who are the loves of her life along with her husband, Pierre. Claire wrote a bi-weekly blog for the Omaha World-Herald for almost two years and is still an occasional contributor. This book contains most of her blogs and commentary on each one. She has written about many subjects that her peers will identify with. Most of the proceeds of this book will go to CureSearch, an organization that does remarkable research for cures of childhood cancers. Two of her children fought cancer and fortunately won their battles. Other interests include duplicate bridge and mah jongg as a player, teacher, and tournament organizer. She also enjoys reading, traveling, and volunteering.

The epic story of a world before Columbus―and a woman bound by a sacred legacy that will live for all time…

She is called Antelope, the daughter of Kwani―She Who Remembers. Possessed of the same mystical powers that made her mother beloved and feared, Antelope takes her infant daughter and follows her wandering mate to the fabled city of the Great Sun. Here, her beauty arouses the lust of the city’s supreme ruler―a man who will become her most terrible enemy. And here, in a place of primitive splendor and savage human sacrifice, far from her people and torn from the man she loves, Antelope must struggle for her survival…and to keep her child safe at all costs.

Let the Drum Speak, by Linda Lay Shuler

From Publishers Weekly The third book of Shuler's Time Circle Quartet should please admirers of She Who Remembers and Voice of the Eagle while immediately drawing in readers new to the story of Antelope, daughter of the revered teacher Kwani Keeper and herself a teacher of the secrets of womanhood. Antelope, an Anazsasi of ancient America, is one of a long line of Chosen Ones who can call the spirits and communicate with her predecessors. She is also the loving mate of Chomoc, who has a wandering eye. Because she fears losing Chomoc, Antelope has insisted on accompanying him on a trading journey to the City of the Great Sun, even though she is still nursing their infant daughter, Skyfeather. But at the city, Antelope and Chomoc are not welcomed by the shaman and his chief, the Great Sun, who suspect and fear their powers. When Antelope sees into the spirit of the Great Sun, she realizes he is hiding a terrible secret and urges Chomoc to leave the area. But her mate is captivated by the beautiful and powerful queen of the City of the North. When Chomoc deserts his wife and daughter, Antelope must use all her powers to defend herself and her child, and to find a way back to her people. Shuler tells this tale in prose turbulent enough, and strokes broad enough, to paint over the sketchiness of her characters. Buttressed by considerable research (bibliography included), it's a bracing read. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This sequel to She Who Remembers (LJ 2/15/88) and The Voice of the Eagle (LJ 6/1/92) follows Antelope, the new "She Who Remembers"; her mate, Chomoc; and their daughter, Skyfeather, as they leave their native Southwest to travel to what is now Oklahoma. Like her mother, Kwani, Antelope faces many dangers in her adventures among strangers. Abandoned by her wandering husband, she is gradually assimilated into the life of the Hasinai, even becoming the beloved mate of their leader, the Great Sun. However, she is torn between her love for him and the need to return to her own clan to warn them of the terrible forthcoming events she has seen in a vision. Although the ending seems a bit rushed and the epilog condenses the future to two pages, Shuler has added an interesting new culture to her well-researched series in this, the third book of a promised quartet. It should be as popular as its predecessors.?Barbara E. Kemp, SUNY at Albany Libs.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist This third novel in the author's best-selling Time Circle quartet about pre-Columbian America follows She Who Remembers (1989) and The Voice of the Eagle (1992). The time is the thirteenth century, and Antelope, of the Anasazi Indians (in what would later be the state of New Mexico), must carry on the wise-woman tradition passed on to her by her mother so that, when the time comes, she can hand the information and powers she possesses over to her daughter. Antelope has cause to leave her home territory and wander eastward to the land of the mound builders, where her mysticism puts her fortunes in jeopardy. How she triumphs over this adversity results in an authentically detailed narrative, smoothly integrating the results of the author's archaeological and anthropological research. Expect wide interest. Brad Hooper

A moving and heart rending novel By A Customer Having just finnished this book when i really should have been writing my thesis all i can say is that heck i'm glad i did!! After tentative beginnings i began to wonder weather the novel would hold up without Kwani the previous main character, but it developed into truly one of the best books i have ever read. I laughed and cried but above all i was swept back to that ancient and sometimes savage world with such ease. i could not put this book down and when i finnished it i did so with a great sadness that no further novel awaits me to carry on the saga. Escapist maybe, but truly a magnificent sweeping saga of immense magnitude...Read it!!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Overall a good read By Karen A. Mclarney Out of the three books, I have to admit I enjoyed Voice of the Eagle, the 2nd one, the best. I found that Antelope's character was softened quite a bit and she turned into Kwani. Perhaps this was done purposely to show an evolution of the character. I also found that Ms. Shuler tends to repeat her phrasing for her imagery over and over throughout the trilogy. Much of it becomes predictable and tired. The final ending seemed to be rushed and it becomes quite clear that the author was not going to continue the story line. Nonetheless, I think I would have preferred a little less "tragedy" in Antelope's life and perhaps a bit more focus on the outcome of her final goal - to return home. All in all, I enjoyed the trilogy and recommend it to others. I found it rekindled some aspects of my spirituality that had been neglected. Perhaps better attention to some details in terms of characterization and editing would have improved the trilogy.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A good read, but confusing By LilyPatch I found this book disturbing. There were a lot of errors in the storyline-confusions where it appeared the author mixed Antelope up with her mother, Kwani (A lot of the backstory given for Antelope was really Kwani's) Chomac is essentially Kokopelli, which doesn't jive with "Voice of The Eagle" where he essentially swears to follow Yatosha's footsteps and was disheartned by Kokopelli's lack of respect. It really feels like instead of a continuation, this book is "What would happen if Kwani followed Kokopelli home instead of meeting Tolonqua". Not only that, but why is Antelope's child named Skyfeather? In Voice of the Eagle she says she names her daughter Kwani. There were errors in "Voice of The Eagle" in story flow, for instance: Acoya talks about his love for Whitecloud before he even meets her, and Tolonqua and Yatosha's names are switched several times.. also one of the characters is named Lapu, which earlier in "voice of the eagle" Kwani used as an insult at Owa. Lapu was said to mean the shredded bark used for diapering and toiletry, and that it was an extreme insult and never used as a name.... yet a few chapters later a young boy named "Lapu" is introduced. Despite these errors, "Voice of the Eagle" was a much better read then "Let the Drums speak". "Let the Drum speak" was so riddled with holes and story line flaws, I was unable to take it seriously.A good read, if you read it seperatly from the series and take it at face value. But if really enjoy the other two books in the series, or can't stand crooked story lines, stay away, you will find it tired and pedentric.

David Elliot Hochstadt, searching for a purpose in life during the seventies, joins the Unification Church started by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. He dedicates his life to the church for fourteen years, then walks away.

But that isn't the end of his talks with God.

David, who joins the organization at eighteen-years old, writes about his experiences in Memoirs of an Ex-Moonie: Understanding and Channeling the Heart of God.

He describes how a Jewish teen in Brooklyn decides to join a cult and details what life is like panhandling for the organization—certain he’s doing his part to help mankind. And he confesses how he leaves after deciding all he’s doing is lining Reverend Moon's pockets.

While disillusioned by the Unification Church, David remains true to his belief in God. He shares his personal journey of faith and how he learns to communicate with God while a Moonie—not from religious instruction but through his personal prayers.

Memoirs of an Ex-Moonie isn't only a memoir about David’s time at the Unification Church—it's a guide to all who walk in faith and yearn to speak with God.

And I feel like I learned new ways to have a better relationship with God. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage others to read it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. God’s Love and Truth Transforms Lives! By John P. Wow! After downloading this Kindle book I couldn’t stop reading it. David’s incredible journey took him through the valley of despair and into the loving arms of God. David frankly shares his amazing story about how God transformed his life. I appreciate his courage to share the intimate details of his metamorphosis, because they provide valuable life lessons for all of us. The phrase “learn from the mistakes of others – you don’t have time to make them all by yourself” really applies here. David not only learned from his mistakes, but God used these unfortunate situations to lovingly transform him into the channel he is today. Thank you David for sharing your story. I can’t wait until they make a movie out of this inspiring book!

First, I learned so much about the grueling life of being a Moonie. I had heard of the cult growing up but never realized it was such an intensely dangerous life. Also fascinating, is that the trauma of this lifestyle could lead Dave to incredible spirituality & ability to become God's clear channel for us all. Thank you Dave for bringing forth these beautiful truths of love & joy in your first book. I highly recommend this book & look forward to reading many more.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An impassioned story of adult life and love By Eos First, to set some expectations - This isn't a novel. It's a a mostly-coherent linear stream of consciousness poured out onto the pages. The author has taken a ~15 year period of her life, mostly her love-life (and one key relationship), and chronicled it.The writing does not strive to be clever, or full of prose. It isn't full of steamy romance and torrid moments though it has it's share of sex and scandal. It does tell a story however. An important one about self discovery, relationships, the things we take for granted and the things we naively miss because we want to believe the best of people. It's a story of abuse, and forgiveness, and learning when to let go.It's a thought provoking journey through the author's life and worth the read for the glimpses into other people's lives and perspectives.
