By Amazon Customer My father's father had a bookcase full of horseracing books, and when I was about seven years old I read 'Brown Jack' by R.C Lyle, a beautifully written account of a legendary horse that had raced in the 'twenties and 'thirties. That book, along with trips to the races sparked a life-long love of racing.I feel quite certain that many youngsters, both today and for years to come, will be equally inspired by 'At The Festival' by Richard Austen, which arrived on my doorstep 52 hours ago and whose 460 pages have been read in two sittings, with a full day's work in between! The tales of glory and woe from Cheltenham in the 'eighties come vividly to life and I will not be surprised if the author will soon be feeling the sort of pressure that George Martin (Game of Thrones) hears to 'hurry up and write more', - there are already two and a half decades of further tales that are there for the telling! This is a tremendous achievement, one that clearly took a prodigious amount of work and research and is a must-read for all sports fans.

I don't go deer hunting very often, but when I do go out, I get excited in the beginning of the day, but always seem to be frustrated at the end of the hunt with not much luck. This book has been very helpful for tips and it makes for a very easy read and fit my reading style. “The war has changed me in ways that will take the better part of my life to understand, let alone make peace with,” begins Roger Boas in his thoughtful, compelling account of World War II. As part of the Fourth Armored Division, he found himself at the spearhead of the Allied thrust into Europe. His memoir re-creates both the tension of the battlefield and the camaraderie behind the front line. It also relates his harrowing experience as a Jew of being one of the first American soldiers to discover a Nazi concentration camp. Boas reveals the powerful impact of war on those who fight.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Lest we forget... By Carmen Cat As one of the dwindling members of The Greatest Generation, who fought in the last "good" war, Roger Boas' memoir is an important reminder of that the casualties of battle were not all left on the battlefield even then. The style is direct and immediate giving the reader a "you are there" experience.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I loved it. By Sam Snead Roger Boas is a true American hero. This may well be the last book written by one of those brave soldiers who landed at Normandy. I loved it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A singular addition to the historic record of World War II By exurbanite A friend of mine who is an acquaintance of Roger Boas lent me this book and I am delighted he did. It is a highly interesting memoir, one that I found both edifying and enjoyable. While hardly an expert, I have done much reading about World War II, mostly works written by distinguished academic historians, both British and American. These centered on particular battles, such as El Alamein, Stalingrad, D-Day, the Bulge, etc. or sieges such as that of Leningrad. The emphasis was naturally on strategy, tactics and maneuvers. My readings have also included biographies of significant military and political figures of all sides as well autobiographic material, such as the diaries of Victor Klemperer and the recently published Swansong 1945, a compendium of letters and diaries written in the last days of the war and collected by the late German author Walter Kempowski. I apologize for digressing to all of the above. I did so only to emphasize how welcome it was to read a very different sort of story. Boas writes about battles from an entirely different perspective, namely of a man who actually experienced the grueling and hazardous life of a soldier on the ground. Boas, who won both bronze and silver stars for bravery in action, records not only the dangers and fears, but also the wretchedness, the sleeping on muddy ground in the cold and rain, the boredom, the waiting and, most of all, the heartache as friends and colleagues die in action. His is a valuable and I believe quite singular addition to the historic record. The 94th Armored Artillery Battalion with which he fought as a forward observer belonged to the Fourth Armored Division, which in turn was a part of Patton’s 3rd Army. It suffered significant casualties and like in wars before and since the fallen doubtless included some of the finest and most promising young men of a coming generation. But the loss to the nation does not end there. Many of those who survived were never the same, and that is the theme that permeates Boas’s memoir. The title of the book “Battle Rattle” is a name once given to what is now referred to as Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. The symptoms of this affliction seem to vary widely, and include such maladies as anger and depression, insomnia, stress and anxiety. Boas himself suffered for several years with what he describes as confusion, haphazard behavior and aimlessness. He also clearly became obsessed with wartime memories. He attended reunions of onetime colleagues, searched for the graves of fallen comrades, and took numerous trips to Europe to revisit battlegrounds and individuals he had met. The book itself, which he worked on for many years, is quite likely a part of this syndrome. His ability to record events which took place so long ago is quite remarkable. He was assisted in the writing by letters retained by family members, and material provided to him by friends and associates who had also taken part. He gives full credit to editorial assistance he received; the latter doubtless helped to shape the work into its pleasurably readable and professional tone.

Excerpt from A Short History of the English Colonies in AmericaThe history of the thirteen American colonies is at best fragmentary and provincial, and does not assume the importance and value of the history of a nation until the meeting of the Stamp Act Congress at New York in the year 1765. But who and what the people were who fought the war for Independence and founded the United States - what was their life, what their habits, thoughts, and manners - seemed to me, when I began my study of American history, questions of the deepest interest. They were questions, too, which appeared to me never to have been answered in a compact and comprehensive form; and this volume is an attempt to supply the deficiency. The chapters, therefore, which purport to describe the various colonies in and about the year 1765 represent the purpose of the book. They have been worked out, in the course of several years, from a mass of material which has been collected in all directions, and which, although wholly in print, is in many cases as generally unknown as if it still slumbered in manuscript. To these chapters I have appended notes - mere references - partly to support conclusions which I thought might be questioned, and partly to aid other students in the same field. The notes represent, however, only a portion of the books, tracts, and newspapers actually consulted. There are many titles in my note-books of works which yielded nothing, and of others again which offered matter that had to be laid aside from mere superabundance of material: only the most valuable and important figure in the notes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Henry Cabot Lodge as historian By William Bilyeu I bought this book because I am researching and writing a history of the colonial United States and I had heard of Henry Cabot Lodge as a historian as well as a politician. I wrote a paper on Lodge and Wilson, the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I and the League of Nations clause. His history of the English (I prefer British after 1707 and the Act of Union of England and Scotland; Wales was already in the union.) is little more than short reviews of each colony with little information that I already knew. However, his views of the colonies in 1765 should be very helpful as that is where I intend to end my history and to review the colonial United States in a different manner.

Nell Goodwin had a hard life but was able to write about the good things that happened. Being a kid during the depression was an advantage. That trip was one big adventure from hop fields to strawberry patches. Another very hard time was on the Hopi reservation with her husband and children. She was able to write about the good things in a hard life as she raised eight children, the last 3 or 4 alone. One of her granddaughters asked her to write about growing up. That got her started and she ended with her trip to Malibu. That was a wonderful trip for her. God made a way for her to go.

It kept me hooked from the front cover to the back cover. I would definetly encourage others to read the book and get a glimpse of a woman who has lived through so much and is a joy to know in person. Nell's sense of humor shines through, and her faith is continues to inspire so many people. Thank you, Sharon, for helping your Mom put down her thoughts, joys, pains, and her life-time of memories! :-) Highly recommended for anyone and everyone to read and enjoy!

The way we live now, by Anthony Trollope

Amazon.com Review Trollope's 1875 tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business, and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover (for whom she steals funds in order to elope) is a classic in the literature of money and a ripping good read as well.

Review "The Way We Live Now is the essence of Trollope. If he had written no other novel, it would have ensured his immortality."

From the Inside Flap 'Trollope did not write for posterity, ' observed Henry James. 'He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket.' Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, "The Way We Live Now is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and a bold indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. 'I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age, ' Trollope said. His story concerns Augustus Melmotte, a French swindler and scoundrel, and his daughter, to whom Felix Carbury, adored son of the authoress Lady Carbury, is induced to propose marriage for the sake of securing a fortune. Trollope knew well the difficulties of dealing with editors, publishers, reviewers, and the public; his portrait of Lady Carbury, impetuous, unprincipled, and unswervingly devoted to her own self-promotion, is one of his finest satirical achievements. His picture of late-nineteenth-century England is a portrait of a society on the verge of moral bankruptcy. In "The Way We Live Now Trollope combines his talents as a portraitist and his skills as a storyteller to give us life as it was lived more than a hundred years ago.

I consider it to be a tragedy that Anthony Trollope's works are largely forgotten and overlooked by the reading public. So many well-educated people have never even heard ot him, although his novels are some of the best representatives of what a good novel should be! His beautiful storytelling in "The Way We Live Now" is just another example of Trollope at his best. A master raconteur, his vivid descriptions and cutting satire make this work one of his most controversial (at least at the time) and indeed one of his most respected. Though his longest work, it certainly does not seem long because he keeps the reader on his toes, so much so, that he is dying to know what will happen next. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is the fact that it is difficult to find a character whom you can like. Each one, and there are many, has one or more particular faults, and we, as the readers, quickly realize that no one is perfect. Even the sympathetic characters are prejudiced at times. This, I believe, is a marked contrast to Dickensian personnages who much of the time are almost too angelic or cruel to be believable. Trollope give us a lesson in true human nature, one that will be very hard for me to forget.

By Mary Whipple Often considered Trollope's greatest novel, this satire of British life, written in 1875, leaves no aspect of society unexamined. Through his large cast of characters, who represent many levels of society, Trollope examines the hypocrisies of class, at the same time that he often develops sympathy for these characters who are sometimes caught in crises not of their own making. Filling the novel with realistic details and providing vivid pictures of the various settings in which the characters find themselves, Trollope also creates a series of exceptionally vibrant characters who give life to this long and sometimes cynical portrait of those who move the country.Lady Carbury, her innocent daughter Henrietta (Hetta), and her attractive but irresponsible son Felix are the family around which much of the action rotates. They are always in need of money and Lady Carbury writes pap novels to support the family (and Felix's drinking and gambling). In contrast to the Carburys, and just as important to the plot, are the Melmottes. Augustus Melmotte, who has come from Vienna under a cloud of financial suspicions, has acquired a huge estate for himself, his foreign wife, and his marriageable daughter. Boorish, but determined to become a leader of society, Melmotte provides moments of humor for the reader, though he is scorned by an aristocracy which is nevertheless beholden to him for his investments. When Paul Montague, a young businessman who has invested in a railroad in America, arrives in town, he finds himself in love with Hetta--and in competition with Roger Carbury for her hand. Felix courts the Melmottes' daughter for her fortune, and she falls in love with him while he dallies with a local domestic worker.Often addressing the reader directly, Trollope fills the novel with action and subplots which illustrate a wide variety of themes, often depicting his characters satirically to illustrate the social, political, and financial ills of the day. Ahead of his time for his depiction of the lively, intelligent woman whose role is defined (and limited) by her social and financial position, Trollope creates a number of resourceful women--and a number who are willing to do almost anything to marry a wealthy man. As is customary in Victorian novels, the good are rewarded here, and the evil are punished, but Trollope's characters, unlike those by Dickens, for example, usually control their own destinies. Broad in scope, thoughtful in construction, complete in its depiction of 1870s' England, filled with wonderful characters, and absolutely engrossing to read, The Way We Live Now is one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. It concerns greed, pursuit of position, and fraud in late 19th century London, but most of the story line reads as if it could have been set in 2008, during the financial scandals on Wall Street. There is even a Bernard Madoff type figure in the story. There is also a BBC/PBS adaptation available on DVD. It is also excellent, but necessarily lacks some of the richness of detail that we find in the book. I don't think of Tollope's books as page turners, but I got to a point where I didn't want to put this down. Perhaps in a few years the material won't seem as fresh, but right now it's very timely.

“Anyone who comes into my life will have to accept the fact that you will always be a part of my life.” Those were the words that my ex-husband used to say to me whenever we would discuss how the two of us saw our relationship going forward after the divorce. Even though we had been divorced for almost six years, had gone on vacations to Costa Rica and Napa Valley together, still enjoyed regular dinner and movie nights and I was even given the quasi girlfriend directive “you can come over my place anytime you want,” I remember thinking that although we weren’t able to make our marriage work after nearly 20 years of being together, I was secure in the strength of our friendship. I was secure in the undeniable spiritual bond we shared and just our overall connection as two people going through life together for nearly two decades and I knew that this man would always be there for me if I needed him. Nothing could have been further from the truth.“Chasing Fool’s Gold”, is a memoir chronicling the author’s life as the wife of a NFL football player and first lady of the South Beach night life scene- seemingly having it all- to an emotionally devastating divorce, working as a package handler at 47 years old -surviving being struck by a drunk driver to the subsequent discovery of a brain tumor. It is the story of her spiritual journey through some of the most difficult times in her life and how she credits God’s goodness, grace, mercy and His unfailing love for her survival. “Chasing Fool’s Gold” is a testament to how the Lord brought the author out of the fog of her delusional “reality” and into His ultimate plan and purpose for her life and the favor He showed her through it all. The journey is told in a real down to earth manner that the author hopes will leave its readers inspired and uplifted while promising to make them rethink their own “reality” and spiritual walk with God.

By JustBeingMe Honest, to the point, and incredibly revealing - the author has opened up and shared her life with us in a way that few will ever be brave enough to to. This excellent read, was appropriately titled. No, all that glitters isn't gold, but God has truly kept a fence around this beautiful author, and His mighty favor will shine on her life, continuously!

By A Customer I was apprehensive when I heard the topics touched upon, because I do believe that a marital relationship should be shrouded with the cloak of confidentiality; however, what the author was able to capture in this book was a great example of God allowing us to live our permissive will, but when it's all said and done, we return back to Him to live His perfect will for our lives! After reading the book my spirit was renewed that true happiness is in Christ despite our human emotions! Great read and may the author be eternally blessed for sharing such intimacy in an honest, yet respectable way. To God Be The Glory!

As a federal employee, are you tired of receiving memorandums and emails which read “Please Respond to: NO REPLY”? It is time for defying this order and replying. This memoir with a twist employs humor, common sense ideas and analysis peppered with a bit of sarcasm as I highlight my career from the day I swore the oath of office until I received retirement testimonials. I speak boldly for myself and my colleagues weary of being maligned by the media, pre judged by the public, buried in bureaucratic red tape by Beltway insiders while being a prime target of terrorists. I recount my personal triumphs overcoming physical disability, injury and relocation. From my Seinfeld style repartee of smoke breaks, acronyms and managerial quirks to a more serious debate on the effects of media myths, Presidential executive orders and public unions, I explore the good, the bad, and the inane in the federal government. I answer the question, “Are there any good civil servants working for the federal government?” I relate my passion for my area of expertise: eminent domain and right-of-way acquisition and relocation. To every citizen who holds a strong opinion either pro or con concerning the scope and size of government in the United States, I offer my insider’s perspective based on personal experience accumulated during my thirty year career.

Welcome to the world of The Grade Cricketer. Described as the most original voice in cricket, The Grade Cricketer represents the fading hopes and dreams of every ageing amateur sportsman. In this tell-all 'autobiography', The Grade Cricketer describes his cricketing career with unflinching honesty and plenty of humour, in turn providing insights into the hyper-masculine cricket 'dressing room'. This one-time junior prodigy is now experiencing the lean, increasingly existential years of adult cricket. Here, he learns quickly that one will need more than just runs and wickets to make it in the alpha-dominated grade cricket jungle, where blokes like Nuggsy, Bruiser, Deeks and Robbo reign supreme. Through it all, The Grade Cricketer lays bare his deepest insecurities - his relationship with Dad, his fleeting romances outside the cricket club - and, in turn, we witness a gentle maturation; a slow realisation that perhaps, just maybe, there is more to life than hitting 50 not out in third grade and enjoying a few celebratory beers afterwards. Or is there? * * * The Grade Cricketer book is based upon the popular Twitter account, @gradecricketer, which has received critical acclaim for its frighteningly honest portrayal of amateur cricket. Now, the time has finally come for this middling amateur sportsman to tell his story in full. 'The Grade Cricketer is the finest tribute to a sport since Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch, and the best cricket book in yonks. It's belly-laughing funny but it's also a hymn to the grand and complex game delivered with a narrative pace and ability I'm afraid most Test players don't have. For anyone who ever dreamed of excelling at a sport but never quite made it but still gave it your life, this is the story. A great read!' - Tom Keneally AO.

The Grade Cricketer might look at the life of a weekend warrior but it offers insights into life as a weekend worrier - a young man as unsure about his place in the world as he is about his spot in the team. As such it makes for uncomfortable reading at times and can leave you feeling a little sad for all involved, including yourself. It's kind of like the Muriel's Wedding of amatuer sport, illuminating the unquiet desperation of life in the suburbs. The laughs are awkward and unsettling because they are a little too close to home. In that way it reminded me, in parts, of another fictional memoir. The Durian Effect, by Richard Tong. You haven't lived it but the authors makes you feel like you lived through it. You can relate to it perhaps a little too well even though you're not like that, are you? Well played, lads. Well played.

Grumpy Cat meets Barry McKenzie – a comic romp for cricket tragics By Andy S We’re all familiar with the story of Grumpy Cat, the Arizona feline that shot to prominence as an internet meme in 2012, then – thanks to some canny management – diversified into books, a movie and iced beverages. Now, following a similar path, we have the Grade Cricketer, which began as a cult Twitter account and has now coalesced into a novel, in time for the 2015-16 cricket season.Where Grumpy Cat offered mainly visual humour, though, The Grade Cricketer book is rich with pointed, often-hilarious observations about amateur cricket culture and its discontents. Like any good novel, it comes with its own vernacular: the words ‘chop’, ‘champed’, ‘pipes’ and ‘rig’ dot the pages like freckles on an Australian forearm. Using this artillery of slang and some astute character sketches, the three authors track our narrator’s adventures as he revels in – and occasionally resists – the claustrophobic world of grade-level cricket. These features of the book elevate The Grade Cricketer from the two dimensions and 140 characters of a Twitter feed to a fully-realised character, one that all amateur sports people and their long-suffering significant others will relate to. Amongst the insights, there are enough gags to have you chuckling away the next rain delay, and some descriptive prose that brings the sleepy game of cricket to life.If the Grumpy Cat empire is any guide, more items in the Grade Cricketer franchise can’t be far off: perhaps another book, then a movie, then a Gray-Nicolls tie-in. But while we wait for all that, let’s just enjoy this well-paced, nicely-realised debut of a novel.

A yarn for suburban male cricketers By Philip Mann For those of us who have played cricket at suburban levels in Australia, there is much to identify with in this book. The authors capture the culture of cricket clubs from nicknames to stories to boozing to its alpha male centre. It contains an underlying story of the narrator's career and development. For those who enjoy what happens at suburban cricket clubs might get a laugh out of this. It's very blokey..
