All these memories are still haunting me and I often get lost in day dreaming about the horrible past. Readers Reviews: A powerful and detailed account and very chilling to the thought of human activity to other humans. Very gripping and hard to put down, a highly recommend book. A compelling read and an insight into mans inhumanity to man.it seems unbelievable today how one deranged lunatic in Berlin could cause such destruction and persuade people to act in such a barbaric fashion towards others. I found this to be a fascinating read. Recommended. From the Heart of a man. From the depths of Hell. A harrowing narration of the Worlds darkest hours. This book should be compulsory reading in Schools. We must never forget.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. could not put this book down By JaneAC although I've read many memoirs about the holocaust this book contained information I'd never heard before, such as the underground who kept as many people alive as possible since they were actually in touch with the Americans unknown to the vast majority of prisoners. The American bombing of the camp was so precise that the barracks of the prisoners were untouched while the fine homes of the Germans as well as munition factories were destroyed. A real page Turner and excellent, intelligent recounting of what one man experienced during the darkest days of the war.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Gripping story By Sandra Landry For anyone wanting to understand the need for survival, this story is the one to read. I couldn't put it down

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book because of the information about Emil Korlbach By Careful Shopper I enjoyed this book because of the information about Emil Korlbach, hero/villain (depending on an inmate's perspective) of the Buchenwald Jewish block. The pace was consistent, the details were thorough, and the writing refined. The book is about a Jew who was in the Resistance, and his son, whom he managed to hide during his own imprisonment. There is no "Epilogue", so while the reader may assume that father and son are reunited, it isn't stated.

Excerpt from Poison Mysteries in History, Romance and CrimePoisons, those silent weapons capable of destroying life mysteriously, secretly and without violence, have ever had a peculiar fascination for mankind. They have played so large a part in history at various periods, in romance as well as in crime, that the subject is one which claims the attention of every student of human nature.A poison may be generally described as any substance which, in a small quantity, when introduced into or absorbed by a living organism, destroys life by rapid action. In another sense a substance may be termed a poison that has a cumulative effect if administered for a length of time so that it ends fatally. Substances of this description were called venim, venyn, venum or bane in the Middle Ages, and also termed "slow poisons."It is probable that many substances which had the effect of destroying life were observed and used by primitive man from a period of remote antiquity. When injured in a tribal battle, by perhaps a flint arrow-head or stone axe, he no doubt sought for something to revenge himself on his enemy. In his search for curative substances he also found noxious ones, which produced unpleasant effects when applied to the point of a weapon destined to enter the internal economy of an opponent. He doubtless observed that the arrow-head and spear on which the blood of former victims had dried caused wounds which often proved fatal, owing to the action of what we now term septic poisons. This may have led him to experiment with the juices of plants till he discovered something of a more deadly character.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He also helped compile the collection of antique and ancient surgical instruments and historical manuscripts for the Wellcome Museum of Medical History in London. This book is drawn from manuscripts in this collection. For fans of CSI, this is a fascinating collection of the use of poisons and the development of means of detection as found in history and literature. While the literary style is typical of the late 19th Century, the work is fascinating and entertaining. It places areas of modern forensics in an historical perspective.I would also recommend his classic work Poisons and Poisoners, a true classic of toxicology.

He is an incredible player and I really wanted to know more about his life and how he got to where he is. The stuff about his early life and career was very detailed and informative, I learned so much. Definitely glad I found this one, highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Book By Crystal Simons Since most of the men in my family are big baseball fans, it is only fitting I am as well. I like to find new information about players so I can "one up them" in our little trivial game. I really enjoyed this biography of Mike Trout. It is so fascinating to see his life story from the beginning and his rise to fame. He is one of my favorites and I love his class and how he holds onto integrity. The book is very well written and easy to follow and one that all sports fans will enjoy. The author did a great job compiling all the information and I love his dedication to the truths. I recommend this to all fans of baseball, sports and Mike Trout. It is an awesome read.

A must read for any Mike Trout fan By Grant Steiner This is one of the few biographies of the great Mike Trout and perhaps the greatest one I’ve read so far! The book is a very detailed look at Mike’s life and times. I believe that he is the greatest baseball player of all time, and not coincidentally, of course, reading through the description of his playing career was fascinating for me, as I haven’t seen him play much. Throughout, the strength of character of Mike comes through...he was not perfect by any means, but he was a good man who tried to do right as he saw it and always respected others and more importantly, the game. Highly recommended for hardcore baseball fans, but it is a very detailed read for the casual fans.

"All the more desirable coastal land of the New World had been acquired by the 1840s and ‘50s. The Scots-Irish entered this country through the Mid-Atlantic States rather than New England.  They settled first in Virginia and Maryland and then moved on to Kentucky and Virginia.  Some went further south from there, while others moved west. Raiders and Horse Thieves is the story of my early childhood in Cedar Creek, Texas (Bastrop County), during the final days of World War II. Due to Reconstruction and the Great Depression, economic growth in this central Texas County had been severely restricted. The residents maintained the pioneer values and lived the lifestyle of a much earlier period. This is a true story of the human will to persevere, against Nature and against one another. I describe growing up in a ramshackle old house called The Holcomb Place, in Cedar Creek, Bastrop County. All the elements of life in rural Texas are there: drought; storms; rattlesnakes; religion; guns. . . ."—Jackie Ellis Stewart From the book: "It was Judy who found the family plot hidden among a clump of young mesquites. The larger headstone was broken; lying face down and embedded in the earth. A number of smaller markers had once surrounded it, but time and the weather, as well as grazing animals and invasive vegetation, had worn them down to indecipherable sandstone lumps. The men were able to pull the larger marker free; they used Joe’s handkerchief to clean off the inscription. Sure enough: Absalom Ellis."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sad, funny By chas Sad, funny, depressing, uplifting; Raiders and Horse Thieves could be a description of childhood inalmost any rural area of the South or Southwest but this one takes place in 1950’s Texas. If you have driven through a small town you have seen these people; if you have lived in a small town you have known them, but you have rarely seen life through their eyes. The author writes with such a visual style that it paints a vivid image of her environment. The reader can literally see the scenes of her life in three dimensions. This is no sentimental excursion but a blunt, honest description of a childhood made harsh by circumstance and culture. This book is difficult to put down once engaged and triggers many memories not recently tapped from my own early life.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A different family dynamic..... By Jeanne Thomas Raiders and Horse Thieves makes for an interesting read. The author shares family and childhood events in the Texas Dust Bowl days. She writes lovingly of her siblings and her mother who is the glue trying her best to hold the family together. The family dynamic is different from that of most of us, but worth sharing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. life was simpler back in the good old days By CuriousMike So, life was simpler back in the good old days? Jackie's memoir proves the good old days weren't all that great and even without electronic devices our complex family relationships are never simple. And yet, the memory of a mother's love still brings a warm smile to one's face. This is a page turner and a good read.

Excerpt from Brigham's Destroying Angel: Being the Life, Confession, and Startling Disclosures of the Notorious Bill Hickman, the Danite Chief of UtahIt was in the Winter of 1868-9, that the editor first saw the subject of this work upon the street in Salt Lake. He was then spoken of generally in Utah as one of the notabilities of an epoch long past. I never heard him mentioned as having any connection with church or civil matters of recent occurrence. For years I had heard of "Bill Hickman, Chief of the Destroying Angels, Head Danite," &c., &c., ad nauseam; but like most persons unacquainted with Mormon history, I regarded such matters as the creations of a fertile fancy. When convinced by a longer residence in Utah that there was and had long been some kind of a secret organization dangerous to Gentile and recusant Mormons. I began to examine the history of the Church more carefully; and while all the Mormon people spoke of Bill Hickman as a desperately bad man, and guilty of untold murders, I was struck by two curious and then unexplainable facts: -1. The first was, that while everybody, from Brigham Young down, united in calling Hickman a murderer, and while evidence could easily be collected of several of his crimes, not a single attempt had been made by priest or people to bring him to justice. For twenty years the Mormons had the courts and juries exclusively in their own hands. During that time many persons had been executed for crime; they could do as they pleased in judicial matters, and abundant evidence was before them against Hickman; but no grand jury ever moved, there was no indictment, and not even a complaint before an examining magistrate. This indicated something - but what? Until I obtained Hickman's manuscript, I never fully knew.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What’s a good mystery story without a beautiful blonde to set things in motion? When the femme sharing a bench with Mallory in the Port City, Iowa, bus station is accosted by a scar-faced, one-eyed thug, the aspiring writer stops minding his own business and leaps into the fray with nothing but his fists and a well-aimed Pepsi bottle. Once the dust clears, the battered brute flees, and the damsel is saved, Mallory figures that’s the end of it. But when the pretty stranger suddenly drops back into his life ― after violently losing hers ― the real trouble is only just beginning. It’s no surprise that Sheriff Brennan wants to quickly close the case, since it threatens to open a can of worms involving political secrets and powerful people. But the harder Brennan tries to declare the death an accident, the louder Mallory screams bloody murder. It’s not enough to wake the dead…but it may just bring a killer to his doorstep.

No Cure for Death (A Mallory Novel), by Max Allan Collins

Amazon.com Review A Q&A with Max Allan Collins Question: Where did Mallory begin? We understand that the first novel published, The Baby Blue Rip-Off, was actually the second Mallory novel.

Max Allan Collins: That’s right. No Cure for the Death was written first, at the University of Iowa’s Writers Workshop. I probably began it around 1969, when I was studying with Richard Yates, the great mainstream novelist. I wrote three novels as my MFA thesis, Bait Money, No Cure for the Death, and Quarry, all sharing the same small Midwestern setting, Port City, but otherwise unrelated. The idea was to demonstrate that a mystery or crime novel could be written with a non-urban setting. Private eye-type stories were usually set in New York or Los Angeles, and I wanted to use a setting where I’d actually lived. Port City was Muscatine, Iowa, the small town where I still live.

Q: But Mallory isn’t a private eye.

MAC: Not technically, but the novels use the Raymond Chandler-style first- person technique, and the general investigative approach of a private eye novel, though these stories are probably more “medium-boiled” than “hardboiled.” Mallory is a mystery writer, which is the excuse for him getting involved in mysteries, but he was not intended to be a series character. Neither was the pro thief Nolan in Bait Money or my hitman Quarry. The three books in my MFA thesis were all designed to be standalones.

Q: Why series then?

MAC: Bait Money and No Cure for the Death both sold in late 1972 to Curtis Books, where the editor asked for sequels to both. Later, Quarry sold to Berkley Books, and that editor asked for a series, too. I was glad to comply in all three cases, but it caused me trouble. Nolan originally died at the end of Bait Money, Quarry was awaiting seemingly inevitable assassination, and Mallory, well...he was just a mystery writer. I’d have given him a better excuse to solve mysteries if I’d known he was going on to four more books!

Q: No Cure for the Death, why was the first book published second?

MAC: Curtis Books bought two Mallory novels, but the company was swallowed up by a bigger publisher, Popular Library, who consigned my novels to the purgatory known as inventory. For years, Popular Library’s editor assured me the books would be published, but before that ever happened, the rights reverted to me. No Cure for the Death had been very much of the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, with a strong Vietnam theme – some have called Mallory a hippie private eye. By the early ‘80s, the book seemed dated. The second novel, The Baby Blue Rip-Off, hadn’t dated at all. So it came up into the first slot. When No Cure for the Death was published next, I added an author’s note to label it a prequel.

Q: What were the circumstances of Mallory finally finding his way into print?

MAC: In the early ‘80s, I wrote an eco-thriller called Midnight Haul that I submitted to Walker Books. An editor there loved it and told me she was buying it, but then the top editor at Walker, Ruth Cavin, a very famous editor, called me to say that she liked Midnight Haul, but that it was too dark, and too much of a thriller, for the Walker line. If I ever did a mystery, though, she wanted to see it. As it happens, I had just gotten the rights back to the two Mallory novels, bundled The Baby Blue Rip-Off off to Ruth, who bought it in lightning speed. Shortly thereafter, Midnight Haul sold to Foul Play Press. The eco-thriller really is similar to the Mallorys, and if I had it to over, I’d probably rewrite Midnight Haul into a Mallory novel.

Q: The smalltown setting does seem to be part of Mallory’s appeal, though you take him out of Port City in both Kill Your Darlings and Nice Weekend for a Murder.

MAC: That indicates the autobiographical nature of the books. Kill Your Darlings is set in Chicago at a Bouchercon, the big mystery fan convetion, and Nice Weekend for a Murder is set at Mohonk Mountain House, in upstate New York, where real mystery writers used to stage fake mysteries for guests...maybe they still do. Anyway, my late friend and mentor Don Westlake was good enough to invite me there to participate, which became the basis for Nice Weekend for a Murder. Those two books seem to resonate very well with mystery fans, but my favorite of the Mallory novels by some distance is A Shroud for Aquarius, which is extremely autobiographical, as it deals with the death of a high-school friend of mine, my best friend actually, who was an apparent suicide ten years or so after graduation.

Q: Have we seen the last of Mallory?

MAC: Let’s see what new readers think, now that Thomas & Mercer are bringing the books back into print. With Quarry, I’ve gone back and written new novels set in the ‘70s and ‘80s. If I did Mallory again, though, I would bring up him into the present day, at my own present age. He’s me, for better or worse.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A definite cure for boredom By Joseph P. Menta, Jr. Once again available to mystery readers via new print and e-book editions, Max Allan Collins' classic "Mallory" series continues to be a terrific rediscovery. In this second entry in the five-book series, our man Mallory rescues a pretty woman from a brutal assault in a bus station, which all too soon immerses him in a mystery involving dark family secrets, multiple conspiracies, greed, and a rich patriarch (perhaps) trying to atone for past sins. And- oh, yes- there's murder, too, quite a bit of it.Is Mallory- basically a nice young man home from the Vietnam War and a couple of years of trying out different jobs around the U.S.- up to the task of unraveling a series of deaths that seem to be connected to the richest family in his moderately-sized midwestern town? The author's clean prose and no-nonsense storytelling keep the reader immersed and turning the pages to find out. In fact, if Mr. Collins didn't tell you (in a new author's note penned for this reissued edition), I don't think most readers would guess that this polished, immersive book was written more than forty years ago by a writer still learning his craft.Oh, one more thing-- Mr. Collins also tells us in his new author's note that "No Cure For Death" was intended to be the first book in the "Mallory" series, and "The Baby Blue Rip-Off" the second. However, for various reasons, "The Baby Blue Rip-Off" was released first and "No Cure For Death" second, establishing "No Cure For Death" as the official second entry in the series. So, though it ultimately doesn't much matter, you might want to read "No Cure For Death" first, as it's chronologically Mallory's earliest adventure. One or two things happen in this book, including a personal tragedy for Mallory (I won't get more specific), that resonate later in "The Baby Blue Rip-Off".Well, I'm now off to grab book three in the series, "Kill Your Darlings", to continue my delightful reacquaintance with a series I haven't read in decades. I had forgotten how much fun dark doings in the American Midwest could be.

I think this is the first book he wrote.I enjoyed the plotting very much. Stepping back in time to the 1970's was fun; the clothing descriptions, music, news, etc. The writing was rocky in places but the story was engaging. I've ordered another one.I enjoy Collin's writings and have read about 8 of his books, I had to clear out my library so can't say for sure how many.

I have read others of his and I think they are more mature in outlook. This was not bad, but neither was it great. If you're looking for a light read this will do.Ppp

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The legacy continues! By M Williams This book series will always be my favorite. As usual, when I picked up this newest book, I could NOT put it down. This book appeals to readers of the previous series and new readers alike, as all past occurrences are explained at least briefly. But, you definitely get much more out of this book if you've read the series. I don't say that because it's confusing, but because you genuinely get to watch the characters, who are real people, grow as they age. It makes reading the series so incredibly satisfying knowing that these are real events, and getting to know her family and watch them change. There are many pressing stories that are discussed through this new book, but the most obvious one is the discussion of Raif Badawi. I have been following his story for months and I was very pleased to know the Princess desired action in this situation. You can feel her passion, and sometimes even desperation or sadness, in every word. So long as the princess lives, I will look forward to hearing about her new fights for women's rights and saving innocents from harm.Another reason I love this book is because of how informative it is. Not only do you get captivated by the Princess' personal life, but you also get captivated by real life conflicts that make it so much more interesting and less complicated to understand. If you are a lover of women deserving proper treatment in society, and a lover of a great, and true narrative, I would highly suggest this book!

By marilyn The "Princess" books by Jean Sasson are in my top fifty books of all time. This was not my favorite. The first four had rich stories woven throughout the entire book. This book felt like 30% stories and 70% of explanations of other stuff that felt like a text book. I was looking for stories, so it might have more to do with me than the book because I had expectations based on prior books. I feel terrible giving a low rating. I kept thinking the stories would re-appear.... When the next book comes out, I will read reviews before buying. I never dreamed that I would not LOVE a book in this series written by Jean Sasson!!! Never!

This woman's amazing compassion, courage, and determination to help suffering women throughout the Arab world is extremely inspiring. She is fearless and relentless in her goals and uses her position to fight injustice. Anyone with an interest in human rights will find this book impossible to put down.

By missmickee/bookreview The ambition and motivation of Ivanka Trump (1981-) is the focus of this very brief e-book which highlights her successful career as a business woman who is the Vice President of the Trump Organization founded by her famous father and Republican presidential candidate. This is isn't a biography and there isn't much information about her personal life. There are 10 quotes which highlight her work ethic, strength, determination for success. The author has added 10 very nice different photos with each quote. According to Davis, Ivanka is a workaholic like her father and seems to emulate his principals and management style; she has many successful independent business ventures, including real estate. This nicely formatted e-book might be of particular interest to readers unfamiliar with Trump, for a more in depth look, there are several notable biographies to choose from. Scott Davis is an indie author and co-author of several books covering the subjects of business applications, science fiction, weight loss, and other subject matter. ~ 3* GOOD.Many thanks to the author for the e-ARC for the purpose of review.

Nadila is a writing teacher who believes blindly in the redemptive power of literature. In her search for her own voice, she sets to work studying the complete oeuvre of Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. As if trying different styles in front of a mirror, the protagonist, who can’t quite figure out who she is or what she has to say, measures herself against the formidably seductive Clarice: she reads her books, copies her style, searches for her, and even ventures with her to the boundaries between imagination and reality. I’m a Box is a 21st century novel about the adventure of imaginative discovery (one detail at a time).

It may try your patience By Pippa Lee WARNING: Reading "I'm a Box" (Soy una Caja) may make you painfully aware that it could have been a very different book (unfortunately and only --we can now all wish) had the author realized which character really owned the story."I'm a Box" refers to the protagonist's feelings of being a mere container, an empty container. This container is Nadila, a young woman who is drifting through life. She has low self-esteem, is insecure and often feels inadequate and trapped within herself. Drowning in angst, one day, she decides that becoming a writer would lead her to her identity and her place in the world and that Clarice Lispector, a celebrated Brazilian author would be her role model, teacher and muse."I'm a Box" is one part fiction and one small part, biography. For those who do not know, Clarice Lispector was a real-life writer who has been hailed by some as the Kafka of Latin American fiction and the greatest Brazilian writer of the 20th century. She died in 1977. Ms. Carrero uses the first person point of view combined with a generous helping of the stream of consciousness technique to make readers privy to the thoughts and emotions of Nadila as she tries her hand at writing while studying both Clarice's literary work and her life in an effort to mold herself after her favorite author.Nadila's fascination with Clarice borders into obsession, to the point that in her internal dialogues, she assumes Clarice's voice and has conversations with her. The novel is basically a long-winded monologue interrupted by quotes from and biographical bits about Clarice. It is unfortunate that readers have to experience Clarice through Nadila's eyes and voice. In fact, while plodding through Nadila's self-deprecating tirades and circular thinking, I found myself wishing that she would shut up and let Clarice tell her story on her own. In real life, she was an enigmatic figure. Professor Fitz, a former student of Gregory Rabassa, Lispector's translator, says, "She was an incorrigible liar (...). She wore a lot of masks, and when she would take one off you'd think she was revealing something, but all she was revealing was another mask." Clarice could have definitely made for a much more interesting story. Instead, readers have to settle with glimpses of Lispector's life and acumen as welcomed respites from Nadila's navel gazing."I'm a Box" falls short in its literary aspirations. Nadila's semi-cryptic and sometimes, abstract thoughts and insights are supposed to impress but instead leave the readers mystified and frustrated. The book comes across as trying too hard to parade its own cleverness, and yet it insults the readers' intelligence. How else could one explain the last chapter, which almost reads like an "in case you miss the point, here I'll spell it out for you"? It seems that Ms. Carrero started writing "I'm a Box" with the literati in mind and then suddenly remembered "the rest of us". Well, for the rest of us, there is little I would recommend about the book except that it may stimulate the public's curiosity for Clarice Lispector, whose name and works have been familiar mainly to the literature departments of universities across America.Note: Professor Fitz' quote from "An Enigmatic Author Who Can Be Addictive" by Julie Salamon, March 11, 2005 at nytimes.comDisclosure: this review is based on the Spanish edition of the book, which was provided by Amazon Vine

I even liked the plot very much but many parts were confusing to me. I think it may be a problem in the translation and I think that it would be interesting to see it translated by someone else who knows the nuances of English better. Until then I would not recommend it.

A curiosity: it has illustrations by the author (as the one in the cover), as if the search of the meaning of sentences and words needs sometimes to be transformed in drawings.
