Never mind his relationships but what an adventure working with the elderly. From the elderly people I know in England they have such amazing stories and they definitely put Frank on the path for us to all fall in love with him--oops, I mean his books. If you haven't read Frank this is a good place to start and if you have this is even better to learn how he got there.

The first in a great series of travel memoirs from Frank Kusy, By Juanita One of the reasons that I love reading memoirs is because I get to know the author and their lives, which are often so different from mine. This book is no exception and although new, is the first in his travel memoir series. I enjoyed reading this very much, and having read "Kevin and I" previously, it gave me a better understanding of the man behind the book, and answered the questions I had been left with. (In fact I am now rereading Kevin and I with heightened enjoyment.) I recommend this book as a very enjoyable and great read, written with style, and would suggest that if you don't know the works of Frank Kusy you read this one first, which will then leave you wanting to read the others in this series!

Frank starts his many adventures in an old peoples' home in Clapham. This may sound dull, but it isn't. We meet many characters there and it's due to a particularly determined resident that Frank sees the sun rise on Mount Sinai and sets off on his travels to find himself and the path he is to journey along. Full of amusing incidents, this will bring you closer to Frank than ever before. Read it and see!

PDF Ebook Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship, by Cathie Beck

I didn’t know that people come into our lives, and sometimes, if we’re terribly lucky, we get the chance to love them, that sometimes they stay, that sometimes you can, truly, depend on them. Cathie Beck was in her late thirties and finally able to exhale after a lifetime of just trying to get by. A teenage mother harboring vivid memories of her own hardscrabble childhood, Cathie had spent years doing whatever it took to give her children the stability—or at least the illusion of it—that she’d never had. More than that, through sheer will and determination, she had educated them and herself too. With her kids in college, Cathie was at last ready to have some fun. The only problem was that she had no idea how to do it and no friends to do it with. So she put an ad in the paper for a made-up women's group: WOW . . . Women on the Way. Eight women showed up that first night, and out of that group a friendship formed, one of those meteoric, passionate, stand-by-you friendships that come around once in a lifetime and change you forever . . . if you’re lucky.

Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship, by Cathie Beck

From Publishers Weekly A newly-dumped empty nester at only 39, Beck could do whatever she wanted, but had no friends with whom to do it. She needed pals, so she placed an ad in a Colorado newspaper to form a "smart, sassy women's group," with no idea what sort of response she'd get. A bevy of women responded, and Beck winnowed the lot of potential partners in crime to a half-dozen. One of them would change her live forever, and their friendship is the subject of Beck's mood-hopping memoir. They seemed to have little in common at first glance; Denise Katz was sophisticated, glamorous, successful, while Beck saw herself as a "stubby Catholic girl with thin hair." But the two struck up a fast friendship rife with adventure, even as Katz slowly succumbed to the debilitating effects of multiple sclerosis. It's easy to see why Cabernet attracted a major publisher after it was self-published to great acclaim on Amazon. Though often full of treacle, Beck doesn't shy away from a frank, honest portrayal. Readers may not always like the book's versions of Beck and Katz, but they will identify with them. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Divorced with two kids by age 22, Beck reaches her late thirties “primed for hell and high water.” Looking for a partner in crime, she places a newspaper ad for a women’s group, and meets “high-wheelin’ and fun-lovin’” Denise—the perfect antidote to Beck’s years of struggle as a single parent. In her debut memoir, Beck focuses on their immediate, intensely fierce friendship—there’s scarcely room or air for anyone else, including Beck’s children. The good times are tempered by Denise’s deteriorating health, which ultimately strains the relationship—Beck’s life is beginning to soar just as her friend’s is slipping away. A lively, pull-no-punches storyteller, Beck writes with great affection even as she struggles to create a fully realized portrait of Denise, who remains elusive. Beck proves most effective when drawing on vivid, heartrending scenes from her past (fertile ground for future memoirs) to illuminate the present. As Beck blossoms from tentative and fearful to confident and composed, we come to see how, under Denise’s influence, she has traveled from there to here. --Patty Wetli

A Guilty Pleasure By Maia Tress While reading this memoir, one could easily experience almost guilty thoughts, as though one was secretly reading a dear friend's diary.I loved this book, and frankly, couldn't put it down. In an entertainment world where it seems that every story (book, movie or television) has become so formulaic, it's refreshing and compelling to grasp in one's hot little hands a book that absolutely breaths with life. REAL LIFE, not some "edited for comfort" life. Where difficult circumstances exist and even more difficult decisions sometimes had to be made. Real coming to terms, coming to grips and coming of age LIFE. And lest you think its all aching difficulties, just know (no spoiler here!) that there is plenty of love, grace and hi jinks to make one's teeth itch wondering what the next page will bring. The honesty of this book and this relationship is a life saver...like a conversation with someone you love and admire, who admits to the decisions and wishes of their darkest hour, only to exonerate all humanity in their like moments. The shock of recognition, in both the tough and celebratory moments is palpable. The resulting joy and sense of hope and well being that permeates the reader after the fact is a gift all books should seek to attain. What would I compare this to? Hmmm, well I'd open my food processor and throw in Eat, Love, Pray, Angela's Ashes, Thelma and Louise and Beaches, hit puree and then set up an IV drip! So, strap yourself in and get ready for a true, in every sense of the word, adventure of the heartfelt variety.

By Kevin Dorr Cathie Beck's memoir "Cheap Cabernet" is a stunner."Cheap Cabernet" is real."Cheap Cabernet" is a life most of us cannot imagine."Cheap Cabernet" is a spirit, a strength, a triumph we all dream of.This is a must read book.Cathie Beck's true story takes place within our time. Now. Today. This is a stirring saga of someone you know, maybe someone you work alongside, not someone from the "romantic past" of the 1950s. Cathie has chronicled a snapshot of her life in America, a life most of us neither consider nor choose to see. Beck's memoir is 3 stories interlaced within a single narrative. One story thread is of Beck's struggle to lift not only herself but her children from a life of multigenerational poverty to become something better. Cathie Beck was 21 years old with only a high school education and two babies when she woke up one morning to find her husband gone. He left taking their only car, all of the money in their bank account and their hope for a "normal" future."I worked hard to pretend each and every day that it was normal to be alone in my early twenties with two young children. I did so in part because I had to. The other part was that I needed to prove to myself, to my children, and to the world that our lives weren't throw-away lives. That we were still worth something. That we were just as good as the ones who lived in houses they owned and who drove cars without rusted floorboards. Just as good as those with dads."If the first story thread is Cathie's successful determination in raising her kids, the second thread is that of Beck now in her late 30s; a young woman with her Masters degree in Russian Literature, her two kids now in college. She wants to experience life without being "responsible". She wants the fun she could not have in her twenties. She was lonely, searching, and felt something was missing."My loneliness, you see, grew out of one thing: poverty and its ugly sisters - shame and desperation." We get to watch Cathie grow up, make the mistakes we made as college sophomores, climb a career ladder as young adults, make more questionable decisions.....and as the reader, sometimes you want to shout....DON'T DO THAT, like a parent to a child...wanting to protect her from the pain of a bad choice. The third thread comes in the form of Denise. Denise has MS. Cathie has fears. Each of them is searching for a better life, though each defined it differently. Their friendship transcends that of love. They found in the other, a missing part of themselves. They needed each other for different, yet sympatico reasons. The friendship is not perfect, which makes it ... perfect.Cathie Beck lets us see it all.....the good and the really ugly. Nothing is held back,....their successful plot to "borrow" Denise's husband's $3000, the affairs, the Cuban travel, the forever missed opportunity to say good-bye to your friend who is dying; then realizing it wasn't missed at all. And then it hits you....this is a true story.Cathie Beck's "Cheap Cabernet" is a story of raising yourself (and your kids) out of poverty, welfare, and bill collectors banging on your door. It is a story of coming of age during your 30s, having missed the excitement of young adulthood. It is a story of two women who bring life to each other even as death plays unfairly. It is a story impossible to forget.

Gallien Cheap Cabernet is at turns touching, daring, and chaotic - just like real life. What struck me the most was its authenticity: Cathie's Beck's unique voice, sense of humor, and the battle between her confidence and her self-doubt, shine through. It's ultimately the story of feminine power; of overcoming obstacles, of how friends can uplift each other, learn from each other, and stick by each other, despite the ugliness and awkwardness of illness, despair and death. If you are turned on by the idea of women empowering themselves and seeking more out of life, you'll consume Cheap Cabernet.Cheap Cabernet follows the friendship of two women who find strength in each other; who change each other; who help each other develop broader, wiser and more compassionate perspectives on life, love, gain, loss and death.Cathie Beck has the guts to tell the true story of a transformative time in her own life - the good, the bad and the ugly. The story follows the way Cathie and Denise's friendship evolves as Cathie's life is finally on the upswing while Denise's spirals downward due to MS. Although the storyline focuses on Denise's battle with illness, the REAL story is Cathie's personal journey towards honoring, and tending to, her own wants and needs instead of those of others, as she has done for the majority of her poor, single-mother, hard-knocks life.Cathie is attracted to Denise's boldness and confidence, and despite Denise's slow demise, Cathie gains strength from the example that Denise sets. Denise is no June Cleaver; rather, she assists Cathie in becoming a bit bolder, more confident and more street-smart - for good and for ill.Cathie and Denise share many adventures and sometimes get into trouble. Although they are in their late thirties, their antics often reminded me of two lovable teenage girls, not sure of what they're doing or why, but doing it anyway. Cathie's life, up until now, has been a lot of work, including raising kids under tough circumstances. Denise's life has been consumed with entrepreneurial ventures and marriage. Now, it seems, Cathie and Denise discover their latent youth and, in doing so, recreate and define themselves through each other. This is a wonderful romp, a rich read, a must for any woman anywhere who wants to live her own life to its fullest..Heather Gallien

So many inspirational sayings and snippets from Berra life are must to read. This book talks about different situations that Yogi Berra went through his life. I always tried to compare it to mine and this was interesting journey.

I received it as a gift, otherwise it would have gone back to Amazon mighty fast. The expectation is the book would contain 101 of his wonderful quotes. I failed to find even 20. It is sad. Yogi Berra deserves better.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What a disappointment! By Reviewer4 Are you kidding?? This book is 26 pages long! My fault - the description does say 30 pages (must have included the front and back cover, title page and Table of Contents). Even for a Yogi Berra fan, this was a rip-off for $8.95. Thank goodness it was Amazon Prime. It's going back today.

Excerpt from Shadow and Light: An Autobiography With Reminiscences of the Last and Present CenturyDuring the late years abroad, while reading the biographies of distinguished men who had been benefactors, the thought occurred that I had had a varied career, though not as fruitful or as deserving of renown as these characters, and differing as to status and aim. Yet the portrayal might be of benefit to those who, eager for advancement, are willing to be laborious students to attain worthy ends.I have aimed to give an added interest to the narrative by embellishing its pages with portraits of men who have gained distinction in various fields, who need only to be seen to present the career of those now living as worthy models, and the record of the dead, who left the world the better for having lived. To enjoy a life prominent and prolonged is a desire as natural as worthy, and there have been those who sought to extend its duration by nostrums and drinking-waters said to bestow the virtue of "perpetual life." But if "to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die," to be worthy of such memorial we must have done or said something that blessed the living or benefited coming generations.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shadow and Light: An Autobiography With Reminiscences of the Last and Present Century (Classic Reprint), by Mifflin Wistar Gibbs

Review “M. W. Gibbs recalls a life of myriad transformations—from a youth of poverty to success in gold rush California to election as the first black municipal judge in America to service as the American consul to Madagascar. And Gibbs tells it all with verve and candor. It is an autobiography worthy of its subject—and just as much worth reading today as when it was first published in 1902.”—Tom W. Dillard (Tom W. Dillard)

From the Back Cover Adventure, danger, romance - Mifflin W. Gibbs seemed to invite them in his determination to better himself. He staked out considerable success as an entrepreneur and public voice in the American West before moving on to other frontiers. In California, where he had gone to seek his fortune, he was politically active, protesting the poll tax, editing a newspaper, and generally speaking out. After exile in Canada, necessitated by his civil-rights agitation and the political climate, Gibbs returned to the United States in 1869 - to Oberlin, Ohio, where he earned a degree in law. Then he went to Little Rock, Arkansas, serving as a judge until his appointment as U.S. Consul to Madagascar in 1897. Shadow and Light offers many historical sidelights - on the underground railroad young Gibbs knew first hand, the abolition movement, the Spanish-American War, and nineteenth-century race relations. Acting always on his concern for what he called "the progress of the race", Gibbs won the support and friendship of leaders as diverse as Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington.

About the Author Booker T. Washington was an African-American teacher, author, presidential advisor, and civil-rights leader. Born in Virginia in 1856, Washington was of the last generation born into slavery. After emancipation, Washington attended college in Virginia, and gained fame as a result of his 1895 speech about the importance of educating African Americans and his belief that African Americans were capable of great feats through education. Washington s contribution to educational equality was made greater by his influence in the social circles of millionaires and self-starters, and he was the first African American invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Booker T. Washington published five books with the aid of ghost writers, among them his first autobiography The Story of My Life and Work and his bestselling second biography Up from Slavery, which earned him his invite to the White House. Washington was also responsible for founding the National Negro Business League, which has, since 1966, been incorporated into Washington D.C. as the National Business League.

40 Days: Life, Love, Loss and a Historic Run Around One of the World's Largest Lakes, by Steven Cannon

About the Author Steve Cannon runs. I doubt he would actually call himself a runner though. He would probably refer to himself as more of an adventurer. He’s completed the Tuscobia Winter 150 twice on his fat bike as well as The Arrowhead 135 (Listed as one of the World's 50 Most Grueling Endurance Races), and The Actif Epica. He’s run more than 100 marathons, tamed 36-hour adventure races, failed and nearly died on the world's longest kayak race, The Yukon River Quest. He is a 2016 Inductee into The Order of the Hrimthurs. Finished the 24 hour “Equalizer” run. He rode his bike to the start line of the Deadwood Mickleson Trail Marathon in South Dakota,... 600 miles from Des Moines, Iowa. He’s completed 18 RAGBRAI’s, five Ride-the-Rockies and three times the Dirty Kanza 200. In 2009 he ran across his home state of Iowa (292 miles in 11 days) and is the first person ever to run around the great Lake Michigan (1037 miles in 40 days). His adventures have helped raise nearly $700,000 for cancer charities. Steve is an accomplished speaker, fundraising consultant and is currently working on his second book. He has been profiled by NBC Sports, The Huffington Post and IPR/NPR. You can learn more and follow Steve at www.expandyourpossible.com

Kroese This book, is really more than a book, it's 214 pages of life, struggle, and perseverance through all things life can throw at us. It's so much more than just a book about running and reaching your limits. Steve captures in vivid detail the sorrow of loss, the feeling of hopelessness and in the end..the complete joy of hope and fulfillment. I'm not afraid to admit that as a 31 year old man I shed more than a few tears reading this book. I've read it twice now and each time I find myself lost In its pages and unable to put it down. My advice...It matters not if you're a runner, an extreme sports enthusiast, or someone who is more comfortable at home. Read this book and be inspired to do something bigger than yourself.

Sievers This book is more about the human spirit and what motivates people, as it is about running. This is not a "how to book," if you want to get into distance running, there are other training book, but I wouldn't recommend skipping this book. It is one man's story of how he honors those who have been struck down by cancer. How do you truely live with the gift of life? I learned how community can grow and be inspired by an impossible idea. While this is Steve's story, inspiration from loss is a universal concept and it is fascinating how the people in the book connect with each other, remembering those they have lost and turning that in to action. An individual can't run 1000+ miles in 40 days without other's emotional support. This book is not about Steve, it is about thanking those who helped him and inspired him. It honors the struggles people have with cancer and hopefully inspires others to think beyond what they thought possible. The "gift" of running around Lake Michigan is a powerful one.

By Amazon Customer I was placing a order online and needed to add another item to receive free shipping. I noticed the 40 Year Old Virgin movie starring Steve Carell. Adding this item allowed for free shipping. My packaged arrived and thought popcorn and a movie would make for a relaxing night. With a bowl of popcorn ready to be devoured. I open my new movie only to find a book. Maybe the DVD is in the book. I shook the book like a dirty martini in the making. But no DVD to be found. I wear cheaters, aka reading glasses and didn't have them on. So after a closer look with cheaters to aide in my investigation, it became clear that the title of the book is 40 Days and the author is Steven Cannon. Now I sit with a bowl of popcorn, a book, my cheaters and no movie. Not one to let a good bowl of popcorn go to waist. I concluded that I would read this book as if it's a movie with subtitles. Please note I am not much of a reader and slow at that. I usually wait for it to come out on video. 40 Days may appear to be a book about a man, Steven Cannon who runs around one of the largest lakes in the world, Lake Michigan in 40 days. It's more than that. Lake Michigan is the stage and the forty days are the different acts in the play and Steve is the narrator of a journey of the soul. As I read page 1 that soon became day 1 aka chapter 1 as this book is divided by days of running, I soon felt I was there also. Steven has a way with words. His honest thoughts and sincere feelings were so elequintly penned to paper. I would say this book is a easy read. It is a easy read and it isn't. I cried real tears while reading this book. I will never forget Jaime or Uncle Mike, just to name a few people who I will never have the privilege of meeting. Steve so honored these people's lives that they were able to touch my heart. This book isn't about heartache or about accomplishments. It's about how one man's soul set out to dig deep and find his own namaste. When your last day is done, make sure the movie that passes before your eyes is worth watching...Steve CannonI wonder when this book becomes a movie if Steve Carell will be the lead actor.TamaraFormer race runnerCurrent fat bike roadieAnd the sexy hot tutu chick[...]

Brett had been in love with Charlie from the first day she laid eyes on him in college. When Charlie is brutally murdered, Brett is devastated. But, if she is honest with herself, their marriage had been hanging by a thread for quite some time - especially after Charlie had an affair. The recent reappearance in their lives of his unstable younger brother, Eli, further strained their relationship until Brett, ever steadfast in her devotion to Charlie, began to question her own commitment in the days leading up to his death.

Though all clues point to Eli, who's been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years, any number of people might have been driven to slit the throat of Charlie Moss - a handsome, charismatic man who unwittingly damaged almost every life he touched. Now, looking back on their lives together, Brett is determined to understand how such a tragedy could have happened - and whether she was somehow complicit.

Set against the lush yet desolate autumn beauty of Cape Cod, The Last September is a riveting emotional puzzle. Award-winning author Nina de Gramont takes listeners inside the psyche of a woman facing down the meaning of love and loyalty in a mesmerizing novel that is as moving as it is unpredictable.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Engaging By 2LZ Thank you librarything.com for an advanced copy of The Last September by Nina De Gramont in return for my honest review. The Last September is a hypnotic story that draws the reader in from the very first page. It is a beautifully written novel addressing emotional topics such as marriage, family, infidelity, mental illness, and love. This is a story about Brett, Charlie and Eli. Brett and Eli were best friends in college. Eli and Charlie are brothers, Charlie and Brett are married. There is a long history connecting these characters, each having a very interesting back story. They love and hurt one another, but they are also passionately protective. Sadly, Eli's cyclical mental deterioration, hospitalization, stabilization and eventual release is taking its toll on the family dynamic. When Charlie is found brutally and viciously bludgeoned to death at his family's Cape Cod home, erratic, incoherent Eli, present at the scene, is the likely suspect.Along with unraveling what happened to Charlie, there is a psychological component of what remains in the aftermath of such a tragedy when the pieces need to be picked up and life must move forward. Although it wasn't much of a mystery, the book was very engaging. My only issues with the book were, and I feel this way about the majority of the books that I read, that it was slightly too long and the ending was not as satisfying as I would have liked. When I become invested in a story that seems to be building to a dramatic conclusion, I want a compelling confrontation not a swift resolution. But, that being said, I would definitely recommend the novel. It is an intelligent, thought-provoking read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well-written. Strong sense of place. By Penny I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I stayed with it and I did look forward to reading it each evening, but I grew impatient with the heroine. She had a "deer in the headlights" quality. But in order to be frustrated by her choices, I must have identified with her and cared about her. On a minor point, the heroine's baby daughter Sarah's behavior was not described in an age-appropriate or consistent way. I often paused to question if a child so young was really capable of doing whatever it was that little Sarah had just done or said. Being a mom, the answer was usually NO. That's not a huge problem, but it was a bit of an interruption to the narrative drive. One character was too conveniently dispatched and the story could have been richer had that not been the case.On a positive note, the author can WRITE. Her descriptions and sense of place were terrific and the dialogue was very natural. I love when an author places the reader solidly in the locale. This was largely set on Cape Cod, a place I know and love. I wish the ending had been more resolved. I drew my own conclusions, but then I thought I sensed where things were heading a few chapters back. What if I was wrong?I do look forward to reading another book by Nina de Gramont.

By PostingForNow Author, Nina de Gramont expertly tugs the reader along in this suspenseful page turner. In The Last September, the plot is not too complicated. There are many reverences to Emily Dickinson, that I might not have completely understood. However, overall it was an enjoyable read.I loved the way the author portrayed the main character, Brett, and her total love for her husband, Charlie. In the beginning of the novel we are told Charlie was murdered. He was handsome, charming, and a free sprit. He loved Brett. They married and had a daughter together. Brett doubted her husband loved her as much she loved him.Brett met Charlie through his brother, Eli, her best friend in college, in Boulder, Colorado. Eli had mental illness and was a problem at times. The main part of the story takes place in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This novel is a quick read (about 300 pages). Once I started reading it, I did not want to put it down.First Paragraph"Because I am a student of literature, I will start my story on the day Charlie died. In other words, I'm beginning in the middle. In medias res, that's the Latin term and though my specialty is American Renaissance poetry, I did have to study classics. Homer, Dante, Milton. They knew about the middle, how all of life revolves around a single moment in time. Everything that comes before leads up to that moment. Everything that comes afterward springs from that moment."Also by Nina de GramontBooks For AdultsOf Cats and Men: StoriesGossip of The StarlingsBooks For Young AdultsEvery Little Thing in the WorldMeet Me at the RiverThe Boy I LoveShe Readsshe-reads-logo-2I would like to thank author, Nina De Gramont, the She Reads Organization and the publisher, Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, for providing me with this book, free of charge, for review. The Last September by Nina De Gramont is one of She Reads' Books of Fall. By Frank Drury As I began reading this novel, I was immediately pulled into the story about Lucy and her best friend Harlan, not just by the moving story of Harlan's battle with cancer and Lucy's pending adoption of a 4 year old Russian orphan, but more so by the wonderful prose. I usually read the first chapter of any new Kindle fiction release. Very few grab me like this one did. Halfway through the story I sent a message to the author telling her that her work reminded me somewhat of Anne Tyler, particularly AN ACCIDENTAL TOURIST. But it also reminds me of great nineteenth century novels, when writing seemed to be more alive and beautiful, more caringly crafted. This book won a 5 star rating from Midwest Book Review. Susan Schoenberger also won the gold medal in the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition for this book. In reading A WATERSHED YEAR, I am left with much more confidence and enthusiasm than I had before about the future of Amercian Literature. I eagerly look forward to her next work.

45 of 46 people found the following review helpful. You won't want to put it down! By Annie B A Watershed Year is one of the most poignant books I've ever read. Lucy is such a wonderful character and this story of how she finds herself is simply beautifully told. And that is one of the greatest parts of the book--it doesn't feel like just words on a page, but like someone is brilliantly telling you a story, staight from their heart. Lucy has spent most of her life thinking, not acting. Her watershed year changes all of that. She decides to act and without a lot, or sometimes enough, thought. She just plunges, so it really doesn't come as surprse that it almost ends in destruction. It could have, and probably realistically would have, but Lucy finds strength she didn't know she has and confronts everything head-on.This book could've turned into sentimental, melodramatic mush, but it didn't. Lucy is ultimately just too realistic for that to happen. Even her preoccupation with saints feels real and true. I'll admit that the happy ending is probably off the charts for realism, but I believe that Lucy's at-heart optimism and faith are what makes it fit and feel real for THIS story. Lucy is someone I would love to know and have in my corner, cheering me on in real life.To balance this out, the adoption and Lucy's being completely unprepared for it emotionally are extremely realistic. So many people go into adoption without thinking of how complicated it can be--and how love doesn't spring up automatically for the children involved. Lucy has a lot to come to terms with when the ideal of having a child becomes a reality. Though it takes her some time to get her bearings, she turns this challenge into victory, for both herself and her new son.I loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good high-drama novel. Be aware, though, that this isn't chick lit or light reading, though it isn't oppressively sad, so it might not be a great vacation read, but I do think it would make a good book club choice because there are lots of themes and issues to talk about. For me, overall, wonderful, satisfying and heartwarming read! If you have this in your TBR stack, move it up! You'll be glad you did.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A book that will have you laughing and crying. A must read! By Jennifer Smith I've never been one to seek out specific details in a story line prior to my reading the book myself, so I will not reveal too much in this review. I will say that I truly enjoyed this novel. It was so well written, you will not be able to put it down once you begin reading. Susan Schoenberger has a true gift in writing and has an incredible ability to pull the reader into her world of words. We can all identify with the main character Lucy and her journey to find her true self, all the while discovering and losing loves along the way. A true gem!

Long-time fans of the sport will enjoy the reflections of an elite athlete By Ed Friedlander This is a book to consider buying if you're a strong fan, want a glimpse of the boxing world, or want to meet a likable sports personality.Rob Calloway takes his readers deep into the gritty, often brutal world of boxing. Long-time fans of the sport will enjoy the reflections of an elite athlete. Interested newcomers may find some of the descriptions riveting. If you enjoy the subject, it's easy to pick up and read casually.I've known the author closely since his prime as a professional fighter, when he was investing his winnings in community fitness for his neighbors. Unlike many sports biographies, this is the author's original work. Calloway's unpolished narrative is the perfect medium for his personality. Everyone expect a boxer to exemplify a work ethic. But it's Calloway's gentle humor and kindness that will leave readers glad to have shared time with him.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ok, not great. By Michael A. Mcnamara Poorly written. When emphasis is used, the writer uses all capital letters, even having caps for an entire page. Every one of his 92 fights is discussed. It would have been better to take a few fights and expounded on them more.

It's 1990 and just another typical summer day in Mapletown, Indiana until Uncle Phat, The Reptile (or Uncle Mike, as he used to be called), wanders into the garage and gives his 15 year old nephew, Galen Calcoun, only about an hour to pack. The four of them, a squinting Uncle Phat, his beloved Ruby--a 1970 ruby red white-top convertible Buick Electra 225, Galen, and "the three books about Buddhism" that take their place in the middle of the front seat, are headed to Houston, Texas to "look at an engine" for Ruby. They leave a note for the family and with ZZ Top blaring, take to the road. Uncle Phat doesn't exactly have things figured out, the trip or his life, and now he has shackled himself to his nephew who is in the height of puberty. Both are escaping not only the monotony of their town but also the tyranny of the 'cousins' who by sheer numbers alone, wield chaos-based control over the entire clan, the brunt of which is borne by Uncle Phat though Galen is tiring of it too, even if he doesn't know it--yet. "Intellectuals in a sea of morons" is how Galen views it ten years later as narrator, recounting their trip that includes lessons in French history from Vincennes (Indiana) and Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Of course, they have to make a stop at Mark Twain National Forest. Two peas in a pod, one in the midst of a mid-life crisis, the other a hormone addled teenager, they support one another as they descend into their own weird compulsive downward spiral of lying, reaction, and anger, while Galen decides to experiment with juvenile delinquency. Their "irresponsible" behavior is buffered by the people they meet on the trip that despite their antics, see the better side, invite them in, befriend them. This includes owners of a mattress store in Arkansas that invite them to stay--on the third floor of the store during a tornado warning, and a stoic double amputee Korean war veteran whose fence they accidentally alter. After a foray in a casino bar on a boat in Shreveport, LA, where Uncle Phat reunites with a former 'girlfriend' while Galen decides a sexy black goddess bartender has fallen in love with him as confirmed by--, they have a run-in with a bunch of gun-totin' nature lovers on ATV's in Louisiana. It could go horribly wrong but thankfully Galen gets a stomachache. The point of the trip was what again? Oh yea, getting to Houston to look at that engine for Ruby except...all the while they are badgered by the family to stay in touch so they can get yelled at, chastised some more, bashed for acting "irresponsible" (though Georgia, Galen's mom now has a real reason to freak out). Beginning with the first lie, the trip is predicated on more lies and when it ends, only one of them returns home to Indiana. Wow is now.

A beautiful coming of age story By SouthwestDude I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderfully readable story of a young man and his ne'er do well Uncle who decide to take a road trip that will have profound consequences for both of them. This coming of age story is a reminder of what many of us went through as adolescents - the struggle to understand the adult world and finding the one person who focuses the lens for us.This work is entertaining and, like Virginia Arthur's novel, "Birdbrain" filled with life lessons and insightful vignettes. So many books these days feature characters that are unlikeable and incomprehensible. Yet, this poignant story is about two thoroughly likeable companions. Their affectionate and challenging relationship creates the opportunity for both to finally attain what they've both been seeking...Beautifully done.

They float down a river paved with asphalt, concrete and occasional gravel banks in a classic Buick Electra 225.Visiting towns, parks, people, bars, campgrounds, everything a river trip could offer. They meet all kinds of people, most of whom help them on their way. For one of them, it is an escape to a life of freedom from the peculiarities of civilized life that creates rapids out of ordinary situations. The other enjoys a taste of the ultimate freedom of life on the road for a short time, gaining a clearer understanding of what everyday life has to offer.

Few individuals get to truly experience history, let alone set their personal hand to its shaping and positive direction. Don Cesare gives us a rare look inside the characters, headlines, and behind the scenes moments in not one, but three, of the most prestigious organizations in the United States. This is a truly worthy addition to the historical record by someone who represents the best of what country, commitment, and career means.

A witch.Unlike many modern novels in the witch, werewolf, vampire, etc.. genres, all of the various fantastical species are fully acknowledged and exist side-by-side with humans..humans being the youngest, and possibly the least significant of the species, at least to the minds of the non-humans.Ms Connelly effectively uses alternating chapters to allow her two main characters, Michelle and Elron, a chance to narrate the story from their own point of view.Michelle is a Witch who's life does not follow the prescribed path of most Witches. Elron is a widowed, and still grieving, Elf who has been forced by a Calling to leave his quiet home in the forest and rejoin the outside world. While doing her job as a magical consultant to, the mainly human, area police forces, Michelle captures a number of very nasty individuals. She discovers that these individuals are all part of some larger, evil plan. A Witch's Trial continues on directly from the events of the earlier books in the series.Who will help Michelle identify this evil force? Will she find a way to vanquish her enemy before it destroys her family and her friends? Is this the "great thing" that her unusual clan symbol claims is her destiny? With the sudden reappearance of his thought-to-be dead wife, will Michelle's budding romance with the cranky Elf, Elron, survive the fallout? Can you ride a pink and purple t-rex dinosaur without breaking your neck?Read A Witch's Trial to find out. I enjoyed it, I hope you do too.

AS A SERIES, IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW OUR HEROINE AND HER GROUP OF HEROES THAT STEP UP TO SUPPORT HER AS SHE FACES EACH NEW CHALLANGE. MICHELLE IS STRONG AND INDEPENDENT but aware of her need for back up. She may be first to face the problem but she accepts and appreciates the support. The growing attraction between Michelle and Elton grows slowly and allows them to move forward after dealing with some serious emotional scars. I will be waiting anxiouslycor the next book to be released. I am addicted to your books, Miss ME CONNEELY. YOU ARE AN AMAZI NG Writer AND I LOOK FORWARD TO your next books. Please keep up the excellent work. And thank you for all you shared with us so far.Sincerely,Betty Kashouty

My apologies if you want me to tell you what the books are about. If that’s what you’re after, you’ll have to read someone else’s review ;) I do plan on posting this on all of her books, so don’t be mad if you see me more than once post the same review with the same exact message. I want you, the review reader, to know that this is a talented author. In January 2016, I ran out of things to read, so I decided to give Kindle Unlimited a shot. I’m not wild about the $9.99 charge each month, but I do read quite a few books. So far I’m digging it and it’s all because of N.E. Conneely’s Witch books. I’m on the 4th one now and cannot put them down. I can’t stop reading. It’s actually starting to impact my sleep schedule. Seriously; you can’t draw me in that way, N.E. Eventually I have to put the book down and go to sleep!Let me start by stating, I am not a dungeons and dragons / witches and warlocks kind of guy at all. I hated the Hobbit / Harry Potter movies and didn’t even watch more than 1 of each of them. So my knowledge of this world is nil and my interest is close to that level as well. Why did I start reading a Witch for Hire? I don’t know. The reviews all seemed good and it sounded like an interesting story. I still am not interested in this “world”, but as for N.E. Conneely’s “Witch” books, I can’t get enough! Each book is cleverly written. She has put a lot of thought into witches, warlocks, elves, etc. I have no idea where she gets her material. Maybe she just makes it up. If so, it’s extremely thought out and well crafted. The characters draw you in and make you wonder what’s going to happen next. At the end of each book, she wraps up the drama, but also leaves you with a setup for the next book. They are extremely thoughtful books and you can tell she’s put a lot of time and effort into each book. I look forward to many more “Witch” books, but I will read anything she produces in the future. I’m very happy I found N.E. Conneely and she’s got a fan for life.
