A Child of the Jago, by Arthur Morrison

Review

“Diana Maltz’s new Broadview edition of Arthur Morrison’s classic A Child of the Jago is superb in every respect. With a fine, wide-ranging introduction, helpful notes, and useful appendices identifying the many controversies in which Morrison’s work enveloped him, this Jago is destined to become the standard text for readers of this important novel. Broadview has done it again.” ― Dan Bivona, Arizona State University

“Diana Maltz’s new edition from Broadview is itself a substantial intervention … [and] provides extensive scholarly scaffolding. The book opens with a thorough introduction covering biographical and contextual information … Appendices include the debates prompted by A Child of the Jago around the nature of realist fiction, writings on the world of the slum from contemporary researchers and reformers focusing especially on middle-class attitudes, childhood, women’s labor, and philanthropy, and a detailed glossary to assist with the slang that saturates Morrison’s writing. This material provides a veritable treasure trove for readers seeking avenues for further study.” ― Janine Utell, English Literature in Transition

From the Back Cover

“Learn to read and write, learn all you can, learn cunning, spare nobody and stop at nothing. … Do your devilmost … for the Jago’s got you!” Dicky Perrott, growing up in the notoriously criminal enclave of the Jago, listens and learns. Compelled by his family’s circumstances to provide for his mother and siblings, he sharpens his skills as a boy thief. Along the way, he navigates the Jago’s topsy-turvy ethics, vacillating between the rival messages of his mentors, a devious local fence and a righteous slum priest. Relentless in its bleakness and violence, A Child of the Jago captures the desperate struggle for survival in 1890s East London.

This Broadview Edition provides the literary, socio-historical, and philosophical contexts vital to readers’ understanding and appreciation of the novel. Historical appendices include materials on eugenics, hooliganism, women’s sweated labor, cultural philanthropy, and the debate over the novel’s accuracy.

Dicky Perrot is the main character of the story and we follow him form age 8 to about 17. His fight for survival and the responsibility he feels for his mother and sister whilst his Father is in prison makes you feel like crying. He has nothing and knows, as the local eccentric put it, that the Jago had got him and that there are only two ways out for him - to become a "Swellmobsmen" ( successful thief ) or death. Dicky is encouraged by the local Parson, Father Sturt, who is tireless in his work with the people of the Jago, to try to make something decent and honest with his life and enjoy all the things that the people who he robs enjoy and manages to secure him a job as a delivery boy for the local chandler. Unfortunately for Dicky he is dismissed thanks to an old friend who does not want him to take the straight and narrow path. After this Dicky goes down hill fast, he loses patience with his mother who takes to the Gin and leaves Em his sister to crawl in the gutter and fend for herself, his Father, disenchanted with life after coming out of prison, does his one last fatal job and at the end we see a small, poor desperate Dicky and like his old friend Beveridge told him years before, there are only two ways out of the Jago... Find out which way Dicky gets out in this excellent and realistic portrayal of life in a London slum at the turn of the century.

Unfortunately, the author Arthur Morrison never quite caught on and the novel never received the recognition it merited. Which is a huge pity. Because having re-read it recently, I can confirm that my lasting affection for the story was not misplaced. It is basically a compelling account of the hardship and misery of life in a victorian London slum. But it is also a beautiful and persuasively written childhood adventure that deserves to be considered a minor classic of the "mean streets" genre. The story follows the lives of a family living in "the Old Jago" a psuedonym for the real slum, the Old Nichol. It graphically depicts their struggles, setbacks and adjustments through the adventures of the son and lovable scamp Dicky Perrot as he makes his way through life. The book's central proposition is that we are all creatures of our envoironments and can scarce escape it's overwhelming and pervasive influence upon our character. Considered an unduly frank and pessimistic account at the time, it contrasts interestingly with the more popular novels of Charles Dickens who described similar social settings but much less convincingly, in his tales of the period. The reader of "the Jago" is invited to compare it with "Oliver Twist" for example. I believe Morrison's work to be the better of the two and would welcome others thoughts on the subject. In essence, I recommend this work most highly. Morrison brings his consderable journalistic skills to bear in presenting his story and will leave the reader profoundly moved by the experience.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Harshly Realistic By Pandora Elthwaite Arthur Morrison's novel provides an excellent (if harsh) counterpoint to the relative gentility of Great Expectations or Wuthering Heights. You may be thinking, "Dickens and Bronte didn't pull punches," but read A Child of the Jago, and suddenly Pip's life will seem downright bucolic.Morrison gives the reader a window into the seamy underbelly of Victorian London, and exposes unimaginable living conditions and inhuman treatment. This book is a must-read if you enjoy Victorian literature. It brings to life a part of London that must be experienced to be believed.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. amateurish By Michael Tulloch While low on information, the book still managed to contain misinformation. The USA camping environment differs considerably from the country of the author. The suggestions are shallow combining obvious observations with occasional detailed googled facts. The organisation poor and the layout appalling. However, there are some good suggestions about social behavior which are good yet inobvious to some campers. The firearms advice is both incorrect and childish.

Excerpt from The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second CenturiesAt the request of some common friends, I have endeavoured to put upon paper some few recollections of the late Dean Mansel. I do not pretend to write a memoir of his life; my principal, and indeed my only, object in this letter is to retrace the impressions which many years of close friendship and unrestrained intercourse have left on my mind; and if indeed, I have occasionally diverged into the public side of his character, it has been because I knew him so well in every aspect and relation of life, that I have found it difficult to confine myself to that with which I feel I am and ought to be here mainly concerned. My first acquaintance with Dean Mansel was made twenty years ago at the University, when he had everything to give, and I had everything to receive. As I think of him, his likeness seems to rise before me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries (Classic Reprint), by Henry Longueville Mansel

About the Author Henry Longueville Mansel, D.D. (1820 – 1871) was an English philosopher and ecclesiastic writer. He was born at Cosgrove, Northamptonshire (where his father, also Henry Longueville Mansel, fourth son of General John Mansel, was rector). He was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School, London and St John’s College, Oxford. He took a double first in 1843, and became tutor of his college. He was appointed reader in moral and metaphysical philosophy at Magdalen College in 1855, and Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy in 1859. He was a great opponent of university reform and of the Hegelianism which was then beginning to take root in Oxford. In 1867 he succeeded Arthur Penrhyn Stanley as regius professor of ecclesiastical history, and in 1868 he was appointed dean of St Paul’s. He died in Cosgrove on the first of July 1871. The philosophy of Mansel, like that of Sir William Hamilton, was mainly due to Aristotle, Immanuel Kant and Thomas Reid. Like Hamilton, Mansel maintained the purely formal character of logic, the duality of consciousness as testifying to both self and the external world, and the limitation of knowledge to the finite and “conditioned.” His doctrines were developed in his edition of Aldrich’s Artis logicae rudimenta (1849) – his chief contribution to the reviving study of Aristotle – and in his Prolegomena logica: an Inquiry into the Psychological Character of Logical Processes (1851), in which the limits of logic as the “science of formal thinking” are rigorously determined. In his Bampton lectures on The Limits of Religious Thought (1858) he applied to Christian theology the metaphysical agnosticism which seemed to result from Kant’s criticism, and which had been developed in Hamilton’s Philosophy of the Unconditioned. While denying all knowledge of the super sensuous, Mansel deviated from Kant in contending that cognition of the ego as it really is belongs among the facts of experience. Consciousness, he held – agreeing thus with the doctrine of “natural realism” which Hamilton developed from Reid – implies knowledge both of self and of the external world. The latter Mansel’s psychology reduces to consciousness of our organism as extended; with the former is given consciousness of free will and moral obligation. These lectures led Mansel to a bitter controversy with the Christian socialist theologian Frederick Maurice. A summary of Mansel’s philosophy is contained in the 5th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica (1860).

In a modern era where such issues as heresy are either avoided or misconstrued, this text shines through to set the record straight. There are references here you will not find elsewhere. This was written when the Church was still the Church and understood the approaching philosophical milieu that the 20th century would bring. If you subscribe to the theories of those such as Bart Ehrmann, please read this for a sense of balance.

My Journey of Faith and Hope is the story of Franciszka Stocki's life which began in idyllic Poland and ended across the Atlantic Ocean in the Heartland of America. The happy and comfortable life of a nineteen-year-old Polish girl in the years before Stalin's 1939 invasion of Western Poland contrasts with the horrific condition Franciszka endured for two years in Siberian labor camps and the six years she spent in Africa, separated from her beloved husband, Tadzio. Excerpt from Legends of Our Lady Mary the Perpetual Virgin and Her Mother HannâThe present volume, containing translations of all the important Ethiopic Legends of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the companion volume of translations of the Ethiopic versions of the Miracles of our Lady, are supplements to the reproductions of the Lady Meux Mss., Nos. 2-5, which Lady Meux printed for private circulation in 1899. Many scholars and others have wondered how these fine Mss. became detached from the great Makdala Collection which the British Army brought to England in 1868, and how they found their way into her possession. And as they have also asked why she rendered such a signal service to Ethiopic studies by printing the original texts, with English translations and costly coloured facsimiles of the pictures - a work entailing great expense, and one which none before her had undertaken - I print here a short account of the way in which she acquired them.In the spring of 1897 Lady Meux went to the establishment of Mr. Bernard Quaritch in Piccadilly to purchase a copy of Ludolf's "Historia Æthiopica." Finding that she had been reading a translation of the Ethiopic Version of the History of Alexander the Great, he took the opportunity of showing her a group of fine Ethiopic MSS., which he had recently acquired from an officer who had served in the British Expedition to Abyssinia in 1867. She telegraphed to me asking me to go and examine the manuscripts and to report upon them to her without delay. I did so, and Mr. Quaritch put the manuscripts before me. The oldest of them was a small 4 to volume containing a Life of Hanna, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary; it was illustrated with archaic Ethiopian pictures of Hanna and her husband Joachim, the Birth of the Virgin, etc., and was written in the XVth century.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Have waited so long By Rose I really do not know what stars to give this. It is a magnificent text that has been so long out of print. And the text is as remarkable as ever. If you are interested in the development of myths and legends of Mary this text is a must, truly a must. With it I would recommend The Glories of Mary which is rich in medieval legends of Mary. For the effort made to reprint the text of the Budge book, no stars are enough.I am so sad though that, for whatever reason, the publisher did not reproduce the illustrations in color. Budge and those who supported his work went to such effort to bring these stunning illustrations to us, and with today's technology it should not have been difficult to honor their strenuous and costly work. But what is so very sad about this choice is that, except for the 100 year old copies of the Budge book, these deeply rich and profoundly beautiful illustrations become harder and harder to get a look at. If you are very lucky a few large libraries will lend one of these priceless color illustrated copies to another library. But I have not been able to find one who will (quite understandably) let this precious and fragile illustrated text out on interlibrary loan for some 30 years. It has been that long since I have laid eyes on these deeply moving paintings. These paintings reach deep into your heart with their expressive movement and large soul filled eyes. The color is unexpectedly deep and beautiful after so many years. I hope and pray that another publisher will do the complete job and publish the full colored illustrations. All that being said - this material is stunning. It adds so much to the little we know of how Mary was seen in earliest Christianity. It will stun Christians and touch them deeply - I cannot imagine it otherwise. If you think that the short and much to simple books being published as "the secret life of Mary' or some such thing are all there is than what your heart has yearned for is here - or a great deal of it is here. Read it, love it, let your heart sing in glory. By the way the "secret" gospels of Mary (not Mary the Magdaline) are far from secret and they form the basis of Medieval thought on Mary. These so called secret precious works on Mary are earlier than any of our the books of the New Testament, (except for Paul, naturally), and were in early Christianity considered as important and vital as any of the many other Gospels and material available at that time (it was a vast wealth of writing).Come home to Her and to Her Mother. The work of Budge on Mary is beyond price and will fill your heart with wonder. Here you will find the Mother of Jesus as mighty a healer as Her son - She is a most Gentle Glory. In fact, for those who search for a Goddess Mother in Mary - it will give you information that has been so long kept from us. The myths and legends are magnificent and I can see that they would enrich anyone who sees the Blessed Mother in the light of the Feminine Divine. "Well may such a Lady, Goddess Mother be." Medieval hymn.It is a treasure and even without the colored pictures - it remains a treasure. Let it fill your heart.

THE Hyaku-nin-isshiu, or 'Single Verses by a Hundred People', were collected together in A.D. 1235 by Sadaiye Fujiwara, who included as his own contribution verse No. 97. They are placed in approximately chronological order, and range from about the year 670 to the year of compilation. The Japanese devote themselves to poetry very much more than we do; and there is hardly a home in Japan, however humble, where these verses, or at least some of them, are not known. They are, and have been for many years, used also in connection with a game of cards, in which the skill consists in fitting parts of the different verses together.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Hyakunin Isshu: a 1909 translation brought back to life.... By Merrily Baird As Amazon statistics indicate, Frank Watson's 2013 translation of the Japanese "Hyakunin Isshu" (One Hundred Poems from a Hundred Poets) is significantly more popular with readers these days than William Porter's reprinted 1909 translation of the same poetry collection. Even so, there is a great deal to be said for owning both excellent books, comparing variant translations of a language and writing style given to vagueness and allusion. The poems of the "Hyakunin Isshu" are of the variety known as 'waka' or 'tanka." These words mean "Japanese verses" and "short verses," reflecting their differentiation from the lengthy poetry of China and their more native sensibility. The 31-syllable waka is still being composed, albeit less frequently than the 17-syllable more modern haiku, and it is considered the finest flowering ever of Japanese literature. This specific collection, assembled in the early 13th century, covered roughly 565 years during which the Japanese developed a codified celebration of the seasons, an obsession with love affairs, and a sensitivity to the impermanence of existence. The fact that virtually all Japanese can recite at least a portion of these poems reflects the collection's enduring popularity and the fact that a card game based on the 100 poems has been played ever since the Edo period (1600-1868).Porter's translation provides facing pages for each poem. On the left-hand pages are Japanese language materials to include a romanized version of the Japanese text, a traditional woodblock image of the poem, and a rendering of the poem in Japanese writing. On the right-hand page are an English-language translation of the poem plus background information on the poet, significant allusions, and the woodblock image.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Kindle version By Amazon Customer The Kindle version of this book has a Romanized version of the poems and an English translation. That might be worth $2.75, but only rates three stars for the absence of kanji and hiragana.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Nice By Robert B I like that each poem is presented in Kanji, hiragana, and an Enghlish Translation. A brief history or insight is offered for each poem. I enjoy the illustrations that depict the poems as well. This book offers one possible translation of each poem. Since each poem is several hundred years the older Japanese is being used interpretation is widely debated, but each one is very close to one another. Also, Haiku consists of just a few words lending to additional debate over meanings.I think this is a nice approach to studying Haiku and would recommend it to anyone who would like to learn about this incredible literary form.

Cypathia will make an excellent present for children of all ages.PhilipSimply Captivating, a great read and two great parts in one bookDavidHi Teresa, I really love your book! I highly recommend this book. I got lost in the fantasy story line and imagery.Dr. Cheryl Bauman'Cypathia' was definitely a well written and well thought out book. I don't read a lot of YA or books aimed at younger audiences, but this book kept me glued to the pages. The magical aspect was incredibly descriptive. I loved the dragons, the sorcery and the storyline was full of both. The adventure Kiai had was quite unique. She had such a thoroughly sweet soul. She was placed in a home with a family that showed hatred towards her daily. Yet, Kiai held onto her inner beauty. Billow was a pet I'd love to have as my own. He was a very loyal dragon.Denise Gardner

From the Author I hope you enjoy reading Cypathia as much as I did writing it.  This story has been in existence since I was 10 years old and finally here for you to read and enjoy.

From the Back Cover Isadora is guarding an enormous secret; one that will break apart the world as Kaia knows it. As the day of her 13th birthday dawns, Kaia is unaware that she is about to embark on an amazing magical adventure with dragons, sorcerers and goblins that will see her defeat the evil King Mordor and claim back the Kingdom of Cypathia.

A magical journey with a happy ending By Denise Gardner ** I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**'Cypathia' was definitely a well written and well thought out book. As the story played out we met quite a few characters, some lovely, some not likable at all. Billow was a pet I'd love to have as my own. He was a very loyal dragon. As the story concluded, there were some pretty great moments. This book is a great add to your tbr list- regardless of your age.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Demasiado simple By Claudia Hernandez El libro es algo entretenido. Corto y plagado de referencias a Fausto, pues parece una reminiscencia de esa obra. Los personajes quieren parecer complejos pero son muy superficiales y se reitera una y otra vez lo mismo, haciéndolos unidimensionales. No vale la pena

A composer and lyricist of enormous innovation and influence, Marc Blitzstein remains one of the most versatile and fascinating figures in the history of American music, his creative output running the gamut from films scores and Broadway operas to art songs and chamber pieces. A prominent leftist and social maverick, Blitzstein constantly pushed the boundaries of convention in mid-century America in both his work and his life.Award-winning music historian Howard Pollack's new biography covers Blitzstein's life in full, from his childhood in Philadelphia to his violent death in Martinique at age 58. The author describes how this student of contemporary luminaries Nadia Boulanger and Arnold Schoenberg became swept up in the stormy political atmosphere of the 1920s and 1930s and throughout his career walked the fine line between his formal training and his populist principles. Indeed, Blitzstein developed a unique sound that drew on everything contemporary, from the high modernism of Stravinsky and Hindemith to jazz and Broadway show tunes. Pollack captures the astonishing breadth of Blitzstein's work--from provocative operas like The Cradle Will Rock, No for an Answer, and Regina, to the wartime Airborne Symphony composed during his years in service, to lesser known ballets, film scores, and stage works. A courageous artist, Blitzstein translated Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera during the heyday of McCarthyism and the red scare, and turned it into an off-Broadway sensation, its "Mack the Knife" becoming one of the era's biggest hits. Beautifully written, drawing on new interviews with friends and family of the composer, and making extensive use of new archival and secondary sources, Marc Blitzstein presents the most complete biography of this important American artist.

Marc Blitzstein: His Life, His Work, His World, by Howard Pollack

Review "This comprehensive book about the life and music of the sadly neglected composer Marc Blitzstein is, as well, an invaluable guide to the workings of American arts during the composer's lifetime." --Edward Albee, playwright

"Marc Blitzstein was a friend, from the moment we first met in 1946 until he died eighteen years later. Now he lives again in Howard Pollack's pages. As a composer he was one of a kind, with his whistleable tunes encased in wise formality, and his bodily presence, so happy and so sad." --Ned Rorem, composer / author

"A timely and invaluable study of a composer we need to know more about. I marvel at Howard Pollack's capacity--as with his biographies of Copland and Gershwin--to digest and synthesize a wealth of information, copiously gathered." --Joseph Horowitz, author of Classical Music in America: A History

"A strong biography." Playbill

"A brilliantly researched new biography." --Jewish Daily Forward

"Beautifully written, drawing on new interviews with friends and family of the composer, and making extensive use of new archival and secondary sources, Marc Blitzstein presents the most complete biography of this important American artist." --Newreads

"Now, Pollack has made Blitzstein happen, just as he succeeded in his comprehensive studies of Gershwin and Copland." --Jewish Herald Voice

"[An] exceptionally researched, detailed, and important study of this fascinating, complex, and still relatively unknown composer who well deserves a book of this quality." --Notes

"In this comprehensive, sensitive, and beautifully written biography, Howard Pollack scrutinizes every part of Blitzstein's complex personal as well as public life, sustaining his well-deserved reputation as our foremost biographer of American classical composers." --Judith Tick, Matthews Distinguished University Professor, College of Arts, Media, and Design, Northeastern University

"Pollack has already told us everything we need to know about Copland and Gershwin. Now he scrutinises Blitzstein in the context of his entire cultural and political scene in fascinating and impeccably researched detail." --Peter Dickinson, Emeritus Professor of Keele and London Universities

"A thorough biography." --DC Theatre Scene

"Now, Pollack has made Blitzstein happen, just as he succeeded in his comprehensive studies of Gershwin and Copland". --Jewish Herald Voice 26 "Beautifully written, drawing on new interviews with friends and family of the composer, and making extensive use of new archival and secondary sources, Marc Blitzstein presents the most complete biography of this important American artist." Newreads

"The fluidity of prose, moving between established fact and new interviews and critical ideas, is remarkable, making for a book that is rivaled only by Pollack's biography of Aaron Copland...A momentous achievement indeed...Highly recommended." --Choice

"An eventful and rewarding voyage of immersion into the life and work of an important American composer." --New Music Connoisseur

"Especially valuable..." --Dance Chronicle

In addition to his comprehensive biographies on John Alden Carpenter, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin (as well as a wonderful early book on Harvard composers), Pollack has created a true masterpiece with "Marc Blitzstein: His Life, His Work, His World." What I love most about Pollack's work is his ability to appeal to both scholars and laymen alike: his assessment of Blitzstein's contributions to American music as well as his social conscientiousness during an integral time in American history is impressive and masterfully crafted. Pollack's portrayal of Blitzstein, a significant composer who has, unfortunately, fallen into obscurity amidst our rapidly changing society, makes us contemplate what other American treasures have been cast into the shadows of our all-to-quickly depleting cultural memory. We can only hope that Howard Pollack continues writing books about other forgotten gems of American music, but regardless of his subject, Pollack's work is not to be left unread: it's just too darn good.

Hagen As one who has spent a lifetime musically trawling the same professional and aesthetic waters as Blitzstein (music-theater, the Curtis connection, the unstable tonality gambit, and so forth) he has served as an example (both positive and negtaive) for me over the years. In light of that, from Eric Gordon's wonderful book to this irresistable and crucial one by Howard Pollack, I've followed the literature about MB closely. This book should be required reading for every young composer thinking about a career writing music theater, any artist devoted to the proposition that good art can effect positive social change. (Blitzstein was a shining example of that.) It should also be required reading for contemporary conductors, who sometimes abrogate the normal order of things by directing the creative efforts of the living composers with whom they collaborate. (Blitzstein brooked none of that.)I find it an essential addition to the literature, and am grateful to Howard Pollack and to Oxford for creating it and bringing it out.
