From the Inside Flap The first installment of a spellbinding new series by the author of the beloved Ruth Galloway books, featuring a band of magicians, formerly special ops soldiers in World War II, who hunt for a killer performing deadly versions of their most famous tricks   Brighton, 1950. The body of a girl is found cut into three pieces and Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is convinced the killer is mimicking a famous magic trick, the Zig Zag Girl. The trick was invented by Max Mephisto, with whom Edgar served in the war as part of a shadowy unit called the Magic Men, using stage tricks to confound the enemy. Max is on the traveling show circuit now, touring seaside towns with ventriloquists, sword-swallowers, and dancing girls. He advises Edgar to identify the victim quickly—advice that comes back to haunt him when he discovers she was a young woman he knew well. He’s soon at Edgar’s side, hunting for her killer.   Another death, another magic trick: Edgar and Max are sure the answer to the murders lies in their army days. When Edgar receives a letter warning of another “trick” on the way—the Wolf Trap—he knows the Magic Men themselves are in the killer’s sights.

From the Back Cover Early Praise for The Zig Zag Girl   “With a labyrinthine plot, a splendid reveal, and superb evocation of the wafer-thin veneer of glamour at the bottom end of show business, this is thoroughly enjoyable.” —Guardian, “Best Crime Novels Round-Up”   “An interesting change of direction for the talented Griffiths . . . Enormously engaging . . . Postwar Brighton and its Theatre Royal are beautifully captured in all their seedy glory, and Griffiths’s plot is satisfyingly serpentine . . . Subtle, charming, and very good indeed.” —Daily Mail   “A colourful crowd of ventriloquists and sword-swallowers, a world lovingly re-created in this original, lively, and gripping work.” —Independent   “Elly Griffiths’s compelling novel The Zig Zag Girl takes readers on a wild ride full of mayhem, magic, and murder . . . Griffiths expertly weaves together Edgar’s past and present into one fascinating mystery that will have readers hooked from the very start . . . Capturing both the vibrant qualities of the theater community while also expertly capturing its dark side, Griffiths creates a world where nothing is as it truly appears to be.” —Absolute   “One to look forward to.” —BookPage

By Liz Barnsley I’m a fan of Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway novels so was really looking forward to diving into this one, a standalone novel inspired by her Grandfather.I loved it. Beautifully written to give a sense of the time, a terrific mystery story and a wonderful flow, plus some great characters made this a really really fun read.Edgar, Max and the so called “Magic Men” are a fascinating and eclectic bunch, brought back together by a strange murder that mimicks an old magic trick – The Zig Zag Girl. As Edgar investigates he looks to Max to help him work out what is going on and their friendship is rekindled. There was a delightful old school feel to the prose, very different from the Galloway novels – Christie-esque in style to suit the era, despite the violence it is quite a gentle read. in some ways and Ms Griffiths has caught the sense of the theatre community brilliantly. The glamorous and the less glamourous side merge to give a realistic feeling to it all, you can almost imagine yourself right there. The back story involving the Magic Men during the war is evocative and intriguing as well – and the mystery element is well imagined as the author brings the two strands together to paint a full picture. This is definitely one of my favourite mystery novels of the year so far, clever misdirection, a very enchanting look at the world of magic and a captivating and compelling story means that this definitely comes Highly Recommended from me.

Brighton, England, 1950: the young woman had been sawn in three; the parts, contained in black wooden boxes fastened with brass clips, were discovered in the Left Luggage room of the railway station. Witness descriptions are vague, but several aspects of the case cause DI Edgar Stephens, lead investigator, to travel to Eastbourne to seek out Max Mephisto, magician.Their association began in Inverness during the war, when they were part of a Secret Service team, the Magic Men, but a tragic event had seen the end of team, and their involvement . The resemblance to one of Max’s tricks, the Zig Zag Girl, is strong, but he cannot cast any light on the matter, even when he learns, to his shock, the identity of the victim. When Max’s engagements bring him to Brighton, another death staged as a magic trick leads him to team up with Edgar in an effort to find the killer. In keeping with the magic trick theme, Griffiths cleverly divides her novel into four parts, aptly titled: The Build-Up, Misdirection, Raising the Stakes and The Reveal. She uses two narrators, Edgar and Max, to convey different parts of the story as well as to give different perspectives on events. The immediate post-war era ensures the absence of mobile phones, internet, DNA and even many personal vehicles; thus the detective work relies on heavily on legwork, personal visits and intelligent deduction.Griffiths gives the reader characters that are real and flawed; some are vain and selfish; others distracted by misdirection and convinced by illusion. Her plot is clever and original and has a few twists that even the most astute reader may fail to anticipate. The atmosphere of post-war Britain is skilfully evoked with description, dialogue and the attitudes common at the time. This is an excellent murder mystery from the author of the Ruth Galloway crime novels, and fans will not be disappointed.

By Unassuming Reader The story took quite a while to get into and seemed a little bland. There was less of a sense of time and place than I expected but it turned out to be a reasonable read if a little plodding. Late 40s to early 50s seems to be a popular time period at the moment and although this wasn't bad I’ve seen it done better.Figured out the killer very early on, which means it must have been obvious because I’m usually rubbish at picking the killer. Most of the time I’m that slightly dim person saying “no way, it was the butler?!” Nb. It wasn’t the butler this time.www.unassumingreader.com

Her passion is evident in her writing and if you haven't read her first book do so. This book will also help you to understand the trama associated with domestic abuse. She learned how to protect those she loves from her mother, and Ilse lived for her children as well. This book is extrordinary book of survival and love.

Game 3 of the 1932 World Series between the Cubs and Yankees stood locked at 4-4. Above the almost deafening noise of the 50,000-strong crowd, Babe Ruth could hear the barbs pouring at him from the Cubs’ dugout. He took the first pitch for a strike. Cubs’ pitcher Charlie Root threw two balls, and Ruth watched a fastball cut the corner to set the count at 2 and 2. On the on-deck circle, Lou Gehrig heard Ruth call out to Root: “I’m going to knock the next one down your goddamn throat.” Ruth took a deep breath, raised his arm, and held out two fingers toward centerfield. Root wound up and threw a change-up curve, low and away. The ball compressed on impact with Ruth’s bat and began its long journey into history, whizzing past the centerfield flag pole (estimates put its distance at nearly 500 feet). Ruth practically sprinted around the bases, flashing four fingers at the Cubs: The series was going to be over in four games. In that moment, the legend of the Called Shot was born, but the debate over what Ruth had actually done on October 1, 1932, had just begun.

Review "Highly entertaining and fascinating ... If you know a baseball fan, it's a perfect gift. ... You'll have to read about it yourself."—Chicago Tribune"A fun and accessible history of the Called Shot story."—Library Journal"Nothing makes for better reading than terrific reporting, and few singular moments in sports history have been debated, discussed, and researched with the fervor of Babe Ruth's Called Shot. It took place more than 80 years ago, but it is argued about as if it happened last week. Ed Sherman brings it into sharp focus in a uniquely entertaining and greatly detailed way."—John Feinstein, author of the bestselling A Good Walk Spoiled and Open“Sherman cuts through the hype and hyperbole to deliver the true history of the event, revealing not just what happened but how and why a single at bat became the stuff of legend.”—Glenn Stout, bestselling author of Yankees Century and The Cubs and series editor of Best American Sports Writing"Babe Ruth remains the singular colossus of American sport, and his home run in the fifth inning of Game Three of the 1932 World Series remains the most indelible moment of his career. Ed Sherman takes us back to that afternoon on the North Side, which for so long has remained shrouded in mystery, with this detail-rich biography of the most mythologized at-bat in the annals of the national pastime. Finally we have the definitive account of the so-called Called Shot.—Jeremy Schaap, six-time Emmy Award winner and author of the New York Times bestselling Cinderella Man

The matter in question (did BabeRuth predict he was going to hit a homerun by pointing to an area past the outfield fences, then hit a home run?) is not answered here. The first part of the book describes the greatness of Ruth as a baseball man (and he was great, if not the greatest) as well as the Yankees ball club in general. If you are already familiar with Ruth and the Yankees of his era, this section will not light your fire. The second part of the book describes the homerun incident in detail without resolving the main question. The third part prints the opinions of lots of people who were there. If you have never heard of the "called shot" before, this might be interesting to read, but do not expect any questions to be answered.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. "...It's High, It's Long...It's Gone..." By Big D A "Can't Miss Read" for Baseball Fans...Did he or didn't he "call the shot?" Was Babe Ruth pointing toward the centerfield fence as William Bendix did or was he pointing (and jawing) at the Cubs' bench? And what about Cubs pitcher, Charlie Root" Could he have been pointing at him rather than at centerfield? Did he, Babe Ruth, the Sultan of Swat," intentionally let two perfect strikes go by in order to make the "called shot" even more amazing and magnificent? How much is myth and how much is truth? Certainly something very special happened that day at Wrigley Field in the 5th inning of Game Three of the World Series, but what? All this and more is expertly researched and entertainly presented by Ed Sherman in this, his very best work so far .After this book, there are no more angles to be considered in this truth/legend/myth.In the end nobody knows for sure. Two people can witness the same thing and see it in two different ways. Such is life and such is baseball. As Bob Costas says in the book, whether it actually happened or not is not as nearly important as what it--the fact or the legend--has meant to baseball. The fact that people of that day believed Ruth could have done it is more important than what actually happened. Good stuff, the stuff of which legends are made.Ed Sherman begins his book withs the line from the John Wayne movie, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: " When the legend becomes fact, print the legend..." And appropriately so.Is the "Called Shot" legend or fact?"Read the book and decide for yourself? It is quite good, quite readable and well worth the effort.Did he or didn't he?That is the question...

Then, besides some negative gestures from some fans in the stands about a fastball strike pitched by Cub pitcher, Charlie Root, the Babe gestured by holding up two fingers and mumbling some obscenities under his breath. Lou Gehrig interpreted the Bambino's words to mean: "I'm going to knock the next one right down your...throat." Then a home run ball traveled the long journey past the center field score board. And thus, "The Called Shot" became history that will live on forever. In "Babe Ruth's Called Shot," Chicago sports writer Ed Sherman gives baseball fanatics an in depth look at one of the most celebrated moments in baseball history. Even today baseball fans ponder the question: Did Ruth really call his shot? I like it when athletes make a move after calling their shot and bingo, hitting the bull''s eye. This is an excellent baseball story, I give it five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of THE UNKNOWN BASEBALL PLAYER.

At times it made me sad, anxious and mad but then hopeful, impressed and even happy. It was a real eye opener for me. Other than seeing the film "A Beautiful Mind" I've never learned about the life of a person with mental illness. I was mesmerized by the story of Sunny fighting through. It's a page turner for sure! The fact that she had a job, family, school and other commitments while she was struggling through her delusions just amazes me. She is one smart, determined woman! Kudos to Sunny for being brave enough to write this book as a way to help herself and others. I hope her daughter is proud of her when she's old enough to really understand.

I don't have the impressive ability to articulate my thoughts and feelings quite like Sunny does, and I feel overwhelmed trying to think of what to say to describe the high level in which I was affected by this read. I can only really say that I feel like I was given the gift of being able to experience her inner world, her life-changing experiences, her pain, her struggles, and her triumphs through her eyes, her heart, and her words. I thank Sunny for inspiring me with her strength, insights, and just all around kick ass, super hero, awesomeness. Sunny's daughter would be extremely proud of her mom, and will one day understand the necessity of having to work through her pain via literature, and will admire her for it. She is an incredible human being.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It is more like a “revisionist” autobiography about the thinking process of a ... By Margaret Holt This book is called a novel, but I’m not sure it is a novel. It is more like a “revisionist” autobiography about the thinking process of a woman diagnosed with very serious mental health challenges. The author has detailed recall of what she was thinking as she encountered the psychosis, and she also seems to grasp the difficulties and frustrations of her family and others in her life as they engage with her. Her struggles are enormous, but many of her significant others are willing to stay close and help her through her darkest days. Her oldest sister actually took classes to better understand what she might do to help.A dimension of this writing that is particularly intriguing is the intersection of technology with her illness. She seeks connection with others, but some of her Internet approaches are indeed inappropriate and bring her close to some legal ramifications. Many lives are complicated, but when you mix together complex mental health matters with technology and medications, you are forced to confront at best uncertainty and at worst a loss of self.Despite the dynamic dilemmas she must navigate, her intelligence and the love of others goad her time after time through the crisis in her mind. She is the sole and soul narrator of this story, and at times I longed for the perceptions of the others whose lives brushed against hers. I so wonder what the late Oliver Sacks would have had to say about this story. What she thought about herself was all in her head, and it was her reality, yet she often seemed to step outside herself and recognize that her perceptions were not necessarily reality. Something inside of her continued to pull her in the direction of family and friends whose love and wisdom she trusted. She saw “signs” everywhere. I think one of the first “signs” for the reader was her parents’ membership with others in what they called Koinonia- a Greek word for community. On one level this book is about how one woman in her mind addresses her mental health. On a grander level it is about the meaning of a strong community in assisting those with mental illness. She writes, “Society’s role is to pick people up and help them get back on the ladder of life.”

PDF Ebook We Are What We Pretend to Be: The First and Last Works, by Kurt Vonnegut

Called “our finest black-humorist” by The Atlantic Monthly, Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Now his first and last works come together for the first time in print, in a collection aptly titled after his famous phrase, We Are What We Pretend To Be.

Written to be sold under the pseudonym of “Mark Harvey,” Basic Training was never published in Vonnegut’s lifetime. It appears to have been written in the late 1940s and is therefore Vonnegut’s first ever novella. It is a bitter, profoundly disenchanted story that satirizes the military, authoritarianism, gender relationships, parenthood, and most of the assumed mid-century myths of the family. Haley Brandon, the adolescent protagonist, comes to the farm of his relative, the old crazy who insists upon being called The General, to learn to be a straight-shooting American. Haley’s only means of survival will lead him to unflagging defiance of the General’s deranged (but oh so American, oh so military) values. This story and its 30ish author were no friends of the milieu to which the slick magazines’ advertisers were pitching their products.

When Vonnegut passed away in 2007, he left his last novel unfinished. Entitled If God Were Alive Today, this last work is a brutal satire on societal ignorance and carefree denial of the world’s major problems. Protagonist Gil Berman is a middle-aged college lecturer and self-declared stand-up comedian who enjoys cracking jokes in front of a college audience while societal dependence on fossil fuels has led to the apocalypse. Described by Vonnegut as, “the stand-up comedian on Doomsday,” Gil is a character formed from Vonnegut’s own rich experiences living in a reality Vonnegut himself considered inevitable.

Along with the two works of fiction, Vonnegut’s daughter, Nanette shares reminiscences about her father and commentary on these two works―both exclusive to this edition. In this fiction collection, exist Vonnegut’s grand themes: trust no one, trust nothing; and the only constants are absurdity and resignation, which themselves cannot protect us from the void but might divert.

We Are What We Pretend to Be: The First and Last Works, by Kurt Vonnegut

Review Nature, 10/24/13 “Vonnegut’s first and last pieces are pervaded by his trademark dark humour.” Hudson Valley News, 10/16/13 “Written forty years apart, these two pieces share the typical Vonnegut voice. And if you love his work, you will want to add this book to your collection.” John Shelton Ivany Top 21, Issue #434 “Turn off the electronics and put aside your contemporary crises, for what stands before us is a truly transhistorical story teller that deserves at least one read. This book should be our first, and our last, concern.”

About the Author

Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) is one of the most beloved American writers of the twentieth century. Vonnegut’s audience increased steadily since his first five pieces in the 1950s and grew from there. His 1968 novel Slaughterhouse-Five has become a canonic war novel with Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 to form the truest and darkest of what came from World War II. Vonnegut began his career as a science fiction writer, and his early novels--Player Piano and The Sirens of Titan--were categorized as such even as they appealed to an audience far beyond the reach of the category. In the 1960s, Vonnegut became closely associated with the Baby Boomer generation, a writer on that side, so to speak. Now that Vonnegut’s work has been studied as a large body of work, it has been more deeply understood and unified. There is a consistency to his satirical insight, humor and anger which makes his work so synergistic. It seems clear that the more of Vonnegut’s work you read, the more it resonates and the more you wish to read. Scholars believe that Vonnegut’s reputation (like Mark Twain’s) will grow steadily through the decades as his work continues to increase in relevance and new connections are formed, new insights made.

I only did this one because it was free on my Kindle Lending Library. I loved it, it was a charming coming of age story. It was not an anti-military satire as the leftist writer of the called it. Always keep in mind that when Estates publish books, they are trying to make money from books that the author didn't think were good enough to publish during their lifetime. In any event it was a great little book and it has encouraged me to read more Vonnegut.

By John Williamson "Haley Brandon arranged his three white shirts in one corner of a deep bureau drawer, and nodded absently at the end of each of Annie's sentences. He was tired after a fitful night aboard a railroad coach, and glad that Annie was content to talk on and on without calling upon him to contribute to the conversation. She was a complete stranger to him, and not a very interesting-looking one at that."From that second paragraph on the first page of the late Kurt Vonnegut's Basic Training, one can see that the author's signature attention to detail was already developed in this previously unpublished novella, released about 60 years after it was written. According to publisher RosettaBooks, "Basic Training" was a work rejected by the Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940's, long before the late author had become famous through works such as his absurdist 1969 classic Slaughterhouse-Five and his 1963 satirical science fiction favorite Cat's Cradle.Haley Brandon, the teenage protagonist, ventures from New York City to the Midwest farm of his relative, retired Brigadier General William Cooley, an old loon who insists upon being called "The General." Haley wants to go to Chicago to resume his music studies; The General promises to be the enabler, though he's "as tone deaf as a sparrow." Haley is there to do earn his way, with some "good, old-fashioned work," to learn to be a good straight-shooting American under the tutelage of his older, somewhat unstable relative. He moves into the farm with Anne Cooley, his cousin in her mid-twenties, along with her younger sisters, Kitty and Hope. And there's Mr. Banghart, the farm hand in his thirties, a courtly man with vocal capabilities and with a face "shaved and scrubbed to the luster of wax apples." We have the colorful Roy Flemming, who is Kitty's suitor and wants to take her away on his "nuptial motorcycle."The descriptions of the settings and characters will not disappoint Vonnegut fans, as they're going to be familiar, from Hope, who "walked turtle-slow to the foot of the stairs," to Mr. Banghart, whose "lungs swelled like blacksmiths' bellows" as he began to sing. This novella is filled with such rich images. But as the story move on, like a rich descriptive tapestry being woven, it becomes clear that The General's promises may not what they appear to be. Haley's only method of survival will lead him to tenacious defiance of The General's increasingly delusional and authoritarian principles. There are surprises and there are secrets, and some of those are dark.Vonnegut's "Basic Training" is a fascinating yet intensely disheartened story, one that derides authoritarianism, military values, relationships, parental rules and most of the expected traditions of the family from that era. The late author was good at that, and one can see from this early work that he had already honed his skills of which fans or his work are familiar. As the book description noted, this work was penned to be sold under the author's alias of Mark Harvey yet it was never published in Vonnegut's lifetime. A little online research reveals that in the late 1940s, the author was working at GE in Schenectady, New York, and he was freelancing short stories to various popular magazines of that time, such as Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post. He was using the pseudonyms of David Harris and Mark Harvey to keep from being caught moonlighting.Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007, and a good number of his unpublished works remained in Indiana, where he was born. RosettaBooks picked this novella from hundreds of other works that this author's literary executor had made available, and fans can only hope that they will soon release more of them.2/23/2012

Newport Let me begin this review by listing my favourite Vonnegut novels---that way you can see what my standards are.The Sirens of TitanMother NightCat's CradleGod Bless You, Mr. RosewaterSlaughterhouse 5Breakfast of ChampionsKurt Vonnegut had at least 2 phases in his career as an author. The first was when he was writing safe, careful fiction for magazines, and the second was when he wrote irreverent, novel-length narratives in his flagrantly subjective style. This book, We Are What We Pretend to Be, offers 2 items: The first, Basic Training, written in the 1940s, is a long story of about 80 pages. It was written during his magazine phase. From a technical point of view, it was written well. The sentences are constructed nicely and the story flows at a good pace. But there is nothing irreverent about the story and we do not "hear" Vonnegut's voice. It is not the least bit funny or clever. It's just a run of the mill story which he was unable to get published---and rightly so.The second item, If God Were Alive Today, written in 2000, is presented as a NOVELLA, when in fact it is nothing more than a 1st draft of a tentative novel that Vonnegut abandoned long before he was even close to finishing it. It is appallingly stupid, lame, and not the least bit funny, and there is no way whatsoever that Vonnegut would have approved of releasing it to the public. It was clearly just a helpless, sputtering emission from a machine that couldn't stop itself from going through the motions---even though 5 of its 8 cylinders no longer worked. It was only a writer's exercise; something to do rather than watch television. He didn't have any intention of finishing it---or publishing it.In the Foreword, written by Nanette Vonnegut, it talks about If God Were Alive Today and it says, "...there is hilarity, wisdom, and redemption along the way."No there isn't.Not at all.Nanette should be red-faced with shame. From here on forward she shall be known as Tomato Vonnegut.Talk about a rip-off...and scraping the bottom of the barrel...And the worst thing about this book is that a brilliant title was wasted on it!Shame on you, Tomato Vonnegut---and Vanguard Press---and all the ignorant sycophants who praise this graveyard robbery.

Frank Jackson Matthews knows the Battle of Iwo Jima well—he fought in it—a skinny kid from South Carolina who was the only member of his forty-man platoon to leave the island alive.

You Don’t Know Jack is more than a tale of a marine’s service in an epic battle where so many perished—it’s the tale of a young man who learned to play piano to accompany his minister father’s revivals in the Deep South of the 1930’s and wanted more than anything to be a university music professor—only to have his dream denied.

Matthews served the Marine Corps through the end of World War II. He studied music at the University of North Carolina and played the organ for The Lost Colony play on Roanoke Island. He returned to the Marine Corps as an officer for the Korean conflict and then earned his master’s degree in music at Louisiana State University. He was in arms reach of his professorial dreams when love and duty called him to another destiny.

By turns funny, compelling, and poignant, You Don’t Know Jack is the story of one man’s journey through the epochs of American life.

About the Author

Alisa M. Murphy grew up in a small town. It was a place where tractors outnumbered cars, everyone’s business was everyone’s business, and where she found individual’s life stories to be as gripping as they were gritty. Few stories were as captivating as her Uncle Jack’s.

Murphy has written many human interest, travel, and wellness articles. She is also the author of the children’s book Jack the Drop Falls in the Smokies.

Murphy lives on an Appalachian mountaintop with her husband, and the belief that every writer should have at least one black cat.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it is that good. Very well written By Amazon Customer You Don't Know Jack is a fabulous book with non-stop exciting stories from beginning to end. I have never read a book of 170 pages in only three sittings, but I couldn't put it down, it is that good. Very well written, with humorous stories mixed with the terrible times of surviving Iwo Jima as a Marine, and continuing his fascinating life into his 90's. I have already loaned it to two other people and they have had the same response. It will be the featured book of our rather large book club next month.

It is fast-paced, informative, highly-entertaining, and most importantly.... inspirational! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a book to give someone who might be going through a rough spot in their life.... encouragement through superb storytelling. Reading this book is like having a conversation with a long-lost friend, with the perfect soundtrack playing softly in the background. (This really needs to be made into a movie.... it's incredible!).

I have read other writings by this author, and this is my favorite to date. I can picture her spellbound at Jack's side, easily forgetting to write as she listened. I'm glad she persisted in asking that the stories be repeated. As the daughter of a WWII survivor, I know many of the stories these men and women carried in their hearts were never told. This book is a rare gift from Uncle Jack to all of us. Thanks for your listening ear, Ms. Murphy!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read! Through Heartbreak to a HEA By Itsy Bitsy Book Bits RJ Thompson is another first for me! All I need to say about SoulKiss is wow! This amazing story is full of myths, passion, deceit, love, sex, a sexy alpha male, and of course a full of sass woman to challenge her alpha male! The beginning was a little slow, it took some time to get into but after a little bit it really started flowing! I could not put my tablet down once things got moving!Meet Arianna, she is an archaeologist headed to Greece for an exchange program. She is fascinated with Greek history and its mythology. She is full of sass and has herself a dirty little mouth! She is smart and voluptuous; her curves are in all the right places! Arcaeus is a resilient, strong mentally and physically, and passionate warrior of Apollo in ancient Greece. He is our alpha male! RJ Thompson did an amazing job with her description of Arcaeus! I could dream about him for days! Which brings me to this point…. It all started with a dream… Arianna meets Arcaeus first in her dreams. Her dream is always for the most part the same. She meets him in a forest and instantly feels drawn to him. That is where she wakes up, but she constantly day dreams about him! When Arianna and her friend Sonia leave for Greece, Sonia is her typical self and finds a cute guy to help pass the time. Soon she has Arianna talked into a double date. The date definitely does not go as planned, and Arianna leaves in an angry haste. She finds herself at a Greek Ruin and finds herself transported back in time. It is here in ancient Greece that she finds her warrior, Arcaeus. It is also here, that Arianna and Arcaeus are tested by Apollo, the Greek God of the Sun. Aphrodite though is by Arianna the whole time though. I went through so many different emotions reading SoulKiss, but most importantly I went through heartbreak only to be given my Happily Ever After that I desperately needed. I will most definitely be reading more RJ Thompson books!BUY NOW - http://amzn.to/1GNqV5n

I fell in love with Arcareus and Arianna from the start. Arianna, to me, is much more fun and a better match for Arcareus than her self in a previous life. A smart, funny cast with a villain you love to hate. Apollo does have some redeeming boyish qualities and takes a dressing down from his sister Aphrodite with a bit of a snit but in an endearing manner. And who knew Hades has a sense of humor? This story has romantic love, star crossed lovers, loss and pain, tears and triumph as well as some serious perversion from Apollo that quit frankly shocked me. My favorite scene is the chocolate Cadbury egg Arianna finds in her purse. Arcaeus hears Arianna moaning in ecstasy in his bed and we can only imagine what he was thinking! His first taste of the strange round object leads to some wicked tasty hot sex. Some scary moments that had me cringing in fear for Arianna and Arcaeus and her pain at his death and torture made me cry. A shout out and kudos to Arianna for cracking that guard where it counts. The book has an adult theme and descriptions, so if you are offended by a bit of wholesome sexy and at times crude speak and explicate sex and love scenes be forewarned .I felt the beginning is a bit stilted but as the story unfolds is becomes free flowing and enjoyable. Her descriptions of time and place gives perfect visuals and the research is spot on. I couldn’t put it down and even read it twice. I can honestly say I love this book and will be adding it to my library to read over and over.R.J Thompson is a new author for me and her ability to weave a spell around her readers will keep me coming back for more. I give this book a 5+ star rating and will be recommending this to friends.

But what happens when one is out for revenge and another is set to bring soulmates together no matter what?A sacrifice has torn apart Arcaeus and Thalia but Acraeus is sure he found a way to find her again.Centuries later Arianna has very vivid and realistic dreams about a mysterious man, clothed as if he were from ancient time. And his kiss? To die for!! After a double date gone wrong Arianna flees and ends up in the temples where she prays to Aphrodite. Will her prayer be heard or not? To know the answer to that I highly suggest you read the book. It's a heartfelt journey through time and emotions. They find love and loose love, more then once. Will it end, their journey?Where will it bring them?It brought them on my kindle to read and I loved the story from start to finish!!

Writing a book from behind prison walls is no less than astonishing. I commend Frank Lee Evans III for writing his story so every reader will understand his life. Al Brady was an armed robber and murderer in the 1930s and became the FBI's Public Enemy #1. The crime spree of Brady and his gang brought them from the south and midwest to Maine. A hardware store owner in Bangor became suspicious when Brady requested a large supply of ammunition and paid with an equally large amount of cash, and notified police. The FBI was waiting in ambush for them when they arrived to pick up the ammo. The rest is history, as on October 12, 1937, Brady and an accomplice were killed in a hail of bullets in broad daylight in downtown Bangor. This spectacular public gun-battle has become an integral part of Maine lore. Now, historian Trudy Irene Scee tells the story, including Brady's growing up in Indiana, his criminal exploits, and what brought he and his cohorts to Maine.

Excerpt from My Experience With Spies in the Great European WarThis volume is offered the reader as a collection of chapters which treat of subjects that are closely allied to the great war in Europe which burst forth like an earthquake in 1914. Each one of the several topics has a place in the list of vital themes in an eventful epoch. The treatment is written in a narrative style, not technical, but quite fully conversational. In connection with a number of the chapters are stanzas of verses written especially for this book.In narrating many facts in regard to spies and scouts, the writer introduces the leading places visited in an eventful trip abroad. In the third chapter, entitled My Introduction to Spydom, is the beginning of the list of chapters which recite the details of the object and work of spies. It must not be assumed that the writer condemns spies as workers of evil and iniquity.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Aside from the adventure of espionage, the author offers several insights into pre-Great War politics, the role of Mexico, and how Germans viewed German-Americans and attempted to manipulate them. Definitely worth the read.

Max Frey has written an entertaining and enlightening account of a large family’s struggles to survive during the 1930s and ’40s. His experiences show that genes are not the only factors in the development of one’s character; we also are shaped by our interactions with the people in our lives. Frey shows that he even learned from a few bad folks he ran across. One often can discover as much from observing the consequences of bad actions as he will learn from seeing the fruits of good works.

Frey A moving history of a young man coming into this world in the midst of the Great Depression and his journey along his American dream to a fulfilling life with funny and sometimes not so funny experiences. Very well written from the heart. Totally recommended for anyone interested in a bit of history that will take you from the Hoosier state to several countries and back to the Lone Star state.

One of Verne's Best By Laurence Bush Verne's fine study of obsession and illusion ranks with Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's "L'Eve Future" and Adolfo Bioy Casare's "La invención de Morel." this pocket edition has over twenty illustrations from the original Hachette edition and a short illustrated bibliography of Verne at the end. It's uncut and unencumbered by the lame English translations that marred Verne's reputation in the Anglophonic world. Magnifique!Note; this book inspired the Quay Brother's recent film "The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes."

What does it mean to be satisfied in all circumstances? Do you strive for control and live in bitterness when you realize it's out of your grasp? How do you respond when tragic events force you to confront your true beliefs about God's sovereignty and goodness? Where do you put your faith and trust during times of uncertainty? Erin Reichman has wrestled with all these questions in her battle with a chronic and terminal, genetic heart disease. After struggling to start a family, facing significant health crises, and being told that pregnancy would kill her, she believes her dream of a family is over. Graciously, God miraculously opens the door to parenthood. Yet despite the incredible blessing and delight of a family, the reality of her mortality lurks in the shadows. The end has seemed imminent, only to have new chapters appear, challenging her purpose and perseverance. She strives to seek contentment and thankfulness in each new day, knowing that even in her disabilities, she is an intricate part of His glorious plan. This is her journey and exploration into the 'why, how, and what's next' of life, and the joy of knowing that God's kingdom has no end, only "The And."

She has a very approachable and captivating writing style that draws the reader in. I felt like I was sitting down to coffee with her while she shared her life story with me. Despite many difficult life events, her honest, faith-filled journey was, and is, inspiring. This book is a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with difficult life circumstances, chronic illness, or loss or for anyone who loves someone in such circumstances. It is rare to catch a glimpse of life's tapestry as it is being woven, but I felt like this was the beauty in this book.

First book I've finished in years By Lindsay Erin generously shares very raw details of her life and faith journey through some incredible trials and joys. I lost sleep for several nights unable to put the book down. Anyone would benefit from reading Erin's story especially those facing challenges that seem insurmountable such. This may just be a way she can "share [her] faith and hope with you until you are strong enough to have your own again" (chapter 8) especially through situations such as chronic illnesses, grief and loss, and infertility to name a few.

Sometimes we never know or understand what another person is having to walk through. We are all tested in different ways in our walk, but it always about relationship with our wonderful Lord. I am so thankful for this testimony to the Lord for His loving hand on this family through a very difficult journey. All glory to the Lord.
