I'm glad that I did.This is a good start to this kindle serial.Chris Bruen, an attorney, travels to the Netherlands for a major client to confront a computer hacker that has stolen program codes only to find him dead. What should have been a quick and simple job turns out to be a problem that could cost more lives then it already has. 5 starsThis is going to be a great story and I look forward to episode 2.Episode 2 is slow paced but ends with a horrible surprise. 4 starsEpisode 3 has more action. The hackers, Enigma and Ripley are always one step ahead of Chris and have framed him for the hacking job and domestic terrorism that they themselves are responsible for. 5 starsEpisode 4 has Chris and Zoey crossing the border from Spain to France with the help of a hacker "friend". Chris' friend and co-worker, Ed, who was trying to break the Lurker virus so a patch could be created may not be of help much longer. 5 starsEpisode 5 has quite a twist. I was so busy suspecting one person that the other surprised me. 5 starsEpisode 6 has Chris and Zoey returning to the states. Chris cracked the code and knows who Enigma is. By Michael Hurley In this second book after his much-lauded debut novel, The Insiders, Reece Hirsch proves his mastery of the legal thriller genre. Hirsch sets up the plot expertly, revealing just enough titillating detail to keep you plowing forward. I love the way he sets a scene with dialogue and details that convey a sense of authenticity. You are immediately drawn into the story. The plot falls believably into place through well-drawn characters and a masterful use of suspense and action in just the right measure. The Adversary shows that Mr. Hirsch's promising start was no flash in the pan, and that the thriller genre has found a new star.

This book is full of suspense but it is informative at the same time. On the one hand you spend the time moving around the world chasing after answers to a crime that is getting ready to be committed. On the other hand you learn things about computer viruses that open your eyes to how easily a cyber-attack could happen to us today. While Hirsch takes us behind the scenes of computer programming and virus attacks, he doesn't get so detailed as to be over our heads. I am not a computer whiz but I didn't have to be to enjoy and understand the storyline.Hirsch also lets us enter into the tight network circle that hackers have. We get to see the personalities of hackers, we see why they do what they do and we see that hackers are not just people locked up in rooms trying to break into governement computers. No, hackers are far worse than that...they are men and women on a mission...people who feel it is their responsibility to bring not just governments down but also big businesses. While you may sympathize with their reasoning you have to draw the line at their illegal means.About Chris Bruen, he is one cool dude. He may come off a little cocky because of his abilities but it is not so much that you don't like him. He is very likeable and very knowledgeable in his craft. He and Zoey make a wonderful team and I hope there is more of this duo in our future. I really enjoyed this book. On the cover a reviewer states that Hirsch is writing with the big dogs. I assume he is referring to the more mainstream authors and I will gladly agree with that as this book could go up against anything Crichton put out. This is a good book and you should check it out because it looks like Hirsch is going to be around for a long time.

Pero hay otros días, ¡ah, otros días! en los que el trabajo es intenso y el estrés agobiante, que uno desea una lectura refrescante para terminar la jornada -siempre leo antes de dormir-. En esos días lo que buscó es uno de esos libros fantasiosos con tesoros escondidos, villanos, ambiciones y amores. Esta novela de Blanca Miosi es perfecta para esos días.La búsqueda sigue siendo mi novela favorita de esta autora, pero El Manuscrito I despertó mi curiosidad porque fue rechazado por una editorial y leí que cuando lo publicó como autora independiente tuvo un éxito fulminante, llegó a vender más de 3,000 al día. Tal vez el motivo haya sido que la autora usó un recurso literario que lo salvó de ser una historia más de suspenso. Sin embargo, ahora en El Manuscrito II, Blanca usa el mismo recurso sin agregar nuevos elementos a los que usó en el tomo I. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A.S. King's most ambitious novel yet By Liviania From her first novel, THE DUST OF 100 DOGS, A.S. King has been interested in realistic issues but tackled them with fantastic flourishes. With each of her novels, her popularity and critical acclaim have risen. I love that she's taken the opportunity not to do the same thing repeatedly, but to push her work further and further into the edges. I CRAWL THROUGH IT leaps into full surrealism.The majority of the book is told through the point of view of Stanzi. (Her name isn't Stanzi.) She is split into two and finds refuge in her love of biology, always wearing a lab coat and compulsively dissecting frogs. Some is told by China, who swallowed herself. Some is told by Lansdowne Cruise, whose hair grows when she lies. (She has very long hair.) Some is told by Patricia, who is trapped in a place with no departures. Their friend Gustav tells none of it, but he is central to the story - as is the helicopter he is building, which Stanzi can only see on Tuesdays.It's a convoluted story, and on top of the surrealism, all of the narrators are unreliable. Some truths are easy to find. We all know what Irenic Brown did to China. The details can be harder to determine, and much is left to the reader's interpretation. King has a lot to say. She sometimes hammers her point in, but she's often subtle. (I do love the touch that despite there being prominent male characters, there are no male characters. This is a book where women's voices have primacy.)Much is made in the blurb of I CRAWL THROUGH IT, as well as the design of the book itself, about the testing angle. Yes, there is satire of the modern school curriculum culture. In many ways I wouldn't pick that out as the central issue of the novel. I think it has far more to say about how girls' voices are devalued, but maybe that's just me.I CRAWL THROUGH IT is King's least accessible novel. I think it accomplishes what King said out to do with it, and that her fans will have a lot of fun tangling through it. It is definitely not my favorite King novel. Like GLORY O'BRIEN'S HISTORY OF THE FUTURE, sometimes the polemics take over the story. However, it is a rich read and a bold artistic statement.

These are just a few of the characters who bring Printz Honor author A.S. King’s new surreal novel, I CRAWL THROUGH IT, to life.Told from five different points of view, I CRAWL THROUGH IT is a story of survival, of coping with the anxieties of growing up in 21st century America. As test week is approaching, bomb threats come pouring in. Every day, students are forced to move outside, to evacuate, to reconcile their identities with the way they are seen by each other --- as a collection of Scantron answers, Facebook photos, false stories or career paths. Stanzi, China, Gustav and Lansdale are all bright, are all bursting at the seams, are all internalizing their anxieties (terribly) in their own way. They shield the most vulnerable parts of themselves from the rest of the world.The nudist who lives down the street gives them letters in exchange for kisses and gives Gustav the blueprints for a helicopter that will take Stanzi and him to a place where they will feel at peace. When they go missing, the reporters come, but nobody will answer their questions. China steals away to New York to see a boyfriend she met online. Lansdale tries to find someone, anyone, who can hold a conversation with her.This could have easily been a more typical young adult novel. With her obsessions with biology and M*A*S*H, Stanzi, whose perspective we see the most, is more than memorable enough to carry a story on her own. Factor in the vibrant and dynamic supporting cast and complex character arcs and this could have been great. Great, yes, but also just another YA novel.With its unique narrative structure and surreal aspects, however, this book embodies the disruption it stands for. There are many eloquent ways to discuss the issues these characters deal with (sexual assault, death, depression and anxiety). However, expressing them through the surreal gives them a resonance that can’t be captured in the mundane. Is there a more visceral way to represent anxiety than literally swallowing yourself whole?If you’re the type of reader who needs to understand the meaning of every symbol and theme, this is not a book for you. By Karissa Eckert I have pretty much loved all the books I have read by AS King. To date I have read The Dust of 100 Dogs, Reality Boy, and Everybody Sees the Ants and loved them all. I didn’t like this book quite as much as those ones, but it was still a very well done story that is a bit mind-bending and surreal.This story follows four incredibly talented teenagers as they cope with past tragedy in different ways. The first character (and main one) is Stanzi; Stanzi believes she is two people in one body and they struggle against each other. The second is her neighbor, and best friend Gustav, who spends most of his time building an invisible helicopter. The third is China, one of Stanzi’s friends, who has swallowed herself and is now an inside out girl. The last is Lansdale, one of China’s other friends, who is a habitual liar and can’t ever seem to tell the truth. This book is about their struggle dealing with past trauma and trying to live in the real world.Now I won’t talk about the trauma all our characters have endured, it is different for each character and spans different degrees of trauma. Discovering what happened to these characters to lead them to be the way they are is part of the journey. And that is really what this story is, a magical and surreal journey through the reality these characters make for themselves.Overhanging the whole story is the constant bomb threats that their school receives. These bomb threats are so common that the students and staff have come to see them as the norm. Yet, still this threat of violence and death constantly hangs over their everyday lives.There are a bevy of strange side characters in here. My favorite (and one of the strangest) was the naked bush man, who hides in the bush naked and gives out elaborate letters (like “a”, “q”, etc) to those who pass. Personally I thought he was a bit freaky, but then as the story progresses you get to know him and find out that even he has a method to his madness.As mentioned above the story is surreal and ambiguous. The reader is left with a number of questions...is Stanzi really two people, is China really literally inside out, and does Gustav really have an invisible helicopter, or is all this just an analogy? The whole thing is a bit of a mind trip. Yet it is all the more entertaining because the answer to all those questions is yes. If you believe Gustav has an invisible helicopter then he does, why not? Or you could say that this is an analogy for a long personal journey. Is China really inside out? Sure she could be, anything is possible...or could she just feel exposed to the world around her because of what she’s been through.In a way this is a coming of age story for all of these characters, a commentary on society today, a heartbreaking story about the pain of life and how to cope, and a magical story about riding in an invisible helicopter...really it’s all those things and very well done. The basic message is this, we make our own realities and crawl through them until we finally find the one we want to live in.I should mention I would recommend for older YA. There are some violent things in here and swearing; so that’s a heads up for those concerned about that.Overall an incredibly well done story about pain and reality and surviving it. The story is heartfelt, surreal, a bit ambiguous, and magical. I think this is another great book by AS King and I would highly recommend to those who don’t mind their contemporary fiction having a bit of crazy ambiguity to it. Loved this book and can’t wait to read some of her others.

There is just enough in this book to encourage me to read further on the myth and reality of Patrick Henry, the fallout with George Washington, and just exactly what was the problem between James Madison and Patrick Henry. And the most open minded. It doesn't favor one founding father over another. It states the facts. This is a must for serious students of Patrick Henry.

Adoring Account By VA Duck Governor Henry's papers and various other source material have become available for the first time in 1887 and the author sets about to correct the record as it stands in the few written accounts and only [at the time] biography available of Patrick Henry. The author, Moses Coit Tyler, explains his motivations in his Preface.This is a long-since, out-of-print book that is certainly very much worth your read. Be aware at the onset, however, that history from this period can be saccharine, sometimes to the point of outlandishness. You will be pleasantly impressed with the detail and insight in the early chapters and maybe nonplussed with the author's hyper-adoration in his latter chapters.This author has a point to prove - that being that Governor Patrick Henry is one of the MOST laudable of the Founders. Most 21st century readers are willing to accept their heros bearing the blemishes of humanity: in the 19th century, heros were apparently acceptable only in saintly perfection. Tyler is probably correct in his high esteem for Governor Henry; but, the historian who begins his research with a point to prove, often ends as an author who has sacrificed impartiality, leaving readers unsure of where facts begin and end, or how to refine fact from hyperbole.Much of the appeal of the book is viewing history from a different chronological perspective, but as good as it is...don't let this be your only biography of Henry. You will find a very appealing Patrick Henry with a less mawkish delivery in Thomas S. Kidd's: Patrick Henry: First Among Patriots.-----kindle edition-----Well done, given the analogue to digital transfer process and the editing that goes with it. Page numbers are awkwardly left within the text and while there is a Table of Contents - it does NOT transfer to the kindle's menu choices. Notes are found at the end of each chapter and are properly hyperlinked to the text. There is an extensive bibliography and a very well done, hyperlinked index. About the Author Andrew Wolfenson is an attorney in New Jersey whose practice focuses primarily on divorce/family matters, bankruptcy, and litigation. Fulfilling his childhood aspirations of becoming a sportswriter, Wolfenson also penned a successful blog on the now-closed site "Open Salon" for six years, the majority of his posts focusing on sports-related issues. This latest outing is his second collection of sports-related blogs, and is the follow-up to 2013's "Bloggin' Baseball (from the bench)", also available for purchase on amazon. A superbly written novel that stays with you By Amazon Customer The Drago Tree, the name and the cover appealed from the start, and then from the first page, I was in love with the beautiful prose, the elegantly constructed sentences, which promised an intelligent and insightful story, sensitively told.I was not disappointed.The novel is set on the island of Lanzarote, brought to life by an author who knows it intimately. With confidence, she lavishes poetic descriptions of its unique landscape, placing you there; making you feel, see and fall in love with the place.For example, the character Ann sees from her car window: “Several calderas pimpled the land to the south-west. The lava plain, to the south of her now, rose to meet its mother, La Corona, a monolith of black in the fading light.”The author applies her talent for intricate detail to her characters as well. The trio we focus upon are complex, flawed, vulnerable…It is Ann’s journey we follow, and I really enjoyed the snippets of her past that were revealed to us, providing intriguing, and at times, disturbing encounters with her sister.The island’s past and history is also heavily featured; and I could not help but champion and understand Ann’s sympathy for an island ravished by tourists, its past and culture presented in superficial and sensational ways to serve as a diversion to the damage being done to natural habitats.Through Ann we are able to connect with what is natural, meaningful and raw – she is despite her troubled and haunting past, an idealist, an artist – a cloud catcher!I found it a delightful and enjoyable read… the believable relationships explored in the novel developed, expanded and evolved swiftly, adding sprinkles of romance and mystery to an inner journey taking place in an exotic location.I recommend this novel if you like superb writing and reading a novel that has something meaningful to say about people, places and life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Dutiful Life By John D. Cofield Young Elizabeth was originally published in Britain in 2012 as part of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Its author, Kate Williams, has published a number of well written and researched biographies, but unfortunately I don't feel that Young Elizabeth is one of her better efforts. The book seems somewhat rushed, with a number of easily avoidable errors. Nevertheless it does provide an interesting picture of Elizabeth II as a child and young adult, finishing with her early years as Queen and occasionally jumping ahead to refer to such future events as the Windsor Castle fire of 1992 and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.Princess Elizabeth of York was born in April, 1926, the third grandchild and first granddaughter of King George V and Queen Mary. Although she was born third in line to the Throne few believed she would ever reign as Queen since her father was a second son. She was adored by the public in Britain and abroad from the moment of her birth and quickly became a favorite with the King and with her uncle, the bachelor Prince of Wales. Williams does a good job of detailing the privileged childhood of Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret, who was a much livelier child than her already dutiful sibling Elizabeth. The two young princesses became even more prominent in 1936 when their uncle, who had become King Edward VIII when George V died, suddenly abdicated in order to marry an American divorcee. Williams tends to rush through the events of the Abdication, which have after all been exhaustively covered in many other accounts, in order to focus on Elizabeth, now Heiress Presumptive. Elizabeth continued her studies (which appear to have been superficial even by the low standards for upper class women's education of the period) through the war years, served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service as a driver during the last months of World War II, accompanied her parents on a tour of South Africa, and then married. Her husband Prince Philip was a somewhat close connection within the Royal Family and eminently suitable as a Royal Consort, and the marriage, though apparently somewhat strained at times, has largely been a success.Elizabeth succeeded to the Throne in 1952. Williams doesn't spend much time on her reign, focusing primarily on her sister Margaret's romantic problems in the early 1950s. Young Elizabeth paints a picture of a dutiful, somewhat buttoned up young woman who was born into a high position, rose to an ever higher one thanks to circumstances beyond her control, who has done her level best as Queen. The book is well written, glossing over seamier details that can be easily found in less respectful histories of the British monarchy. There are a number of dating errors in the first chapter covering the childhoods of Elizabeth's parents, and Williams sometimes seems confused by the many names and nicknames used in the Royal Family, but over all readers of Young Elizabeth will gain a better sense of how the elderly lady we've all seen smiling and waving came to be who she is.

I was quite well versed on Queen Elizabeth's children and their lives, marriages, etc but not so much on the Queen herself. I decided to take the leap to the non-fiction side and dove into this book. I have to say it was pretty interesting!I was very grateful that the author, Ms. Williams has a writing style that brought lightness, humor and a bit of clean gossip to this book that made it an interesting, entertaining read. She included a good amount of history prior to Elizabeth being born which really helped to set the stage for the world that Elizabeth was born into. Throughout this book, the author continued to show how the world issues and changing times continued to mold her into the person/Queen she came to be. Queen Elizabeth is quite an accomplished and remarkable woman!The only negative that found while reading this book was that it is a bit too long for my taste. Having shared that, I have to also share that I enjoyed reading Young Elizabeth: The Making of the Queen and getting to know the royal family, especially Queen Elizabeth a bit better!Thank you to Pegasus Publishing and Edelweiss for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

By Rather Read Maybe I was expecting more, but I found this book to be superficial and almost childish. Books about royalty are one of my guilty pleasures and I was looking forward to reading this, but it just skated on the surface. No depth to it at all.

It is as relevant today, if not more so, as it was then. Eucken's style is a little heavy but his analysis, theory and conclusions are solid. I wonder to what extent Clive Lewis read this man's writings, including this book? They are in a small, select group of original thinkers who have applied their considerable intellectual abilities to matters of deep spiritual and religious significance. This book is a must read for the serious Christian.

About the Author Dr. Venugopal Menon, the eldest of seven from a middle-class family in pre-independent India, was raised with time-tested traditions. After earning his medical degree, he served as a doctor in the army and then left his centuries-old culture and ties with his ancestry in search of the American dream. Dr. Menon established himself as a successful physician, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Fellow of the Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and becoming the president of a reputable clinic. He was invited and inducted as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Medicine, London, and was involved in several professional, cultural, religious, and philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife raised three children who are successfully settled and involved in a variety of social causes while maintaining ties with India and their relatives. Dr. Menon has been married to Devi for fifty years, and they live in a Kerala-style home in Pearland, Texas, visiting their six grandchildren whenever they can break away from their social involvements.

By A K Subramanian In addition to the joyful experience in reading the book I can also feel a major positive impact that it can create on every reader’s life. Several of the stories and incidents are depicted in detail and are presented very nicely. They are very inspirational and make us think of what is life? And what is the purpose of life? Many of the well written passages resonate with my own thoughts on the purpose of life or meaning of life.The stories remind us of our own life experiences and our own tales of migration. This book is a “must read” for all migrants and their descendants. It is a gift to our children and grand children. It is not a book for just reading once and done. It has become a reference book for me. Time to time, I am going back to different sections and re-reading to get inspired and feeling good myself by reflecting on my own life stories.It gives an excellent format and ideas for the senior migrants to write their own life stories. I think every senior person has the responsibility to pass on his/her experience to their descendants and future generations. The book provides encouragement for others to write their own books. Thank you so much Dr. Menon, for taking the time and effort to write this treasure.

Narayanan This book is a fascinating autobiography of an immigrant doctor, who grew up and got his education in a different culture and then moved to the United States, established a successful practice and went on to become a community leader. The title “My Mother Called Me Unni” reminds one of Herman Melville’s most memorable opening sentence of Moby Dick: “Call me Ishmael”.From the beginning, the book is a page turner with vivid and colorful narration of early life in a joint family with parents and grand parents.After completing medical education and after working for a short period in India Dr. Menon moves to Scotland and from there to the United States. He describes his internship and setting up a medical practice with characteristic humility. Soon he makes a nostalgic trip back to India to set up a practice there. Grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side syndrome? Chastened by that experience he returns back to the US and gets back to his old practice for good.Dr. Menon’s story is the inspiring saga of an immigrant from an ancient culture transplanting himself to the US and by dint of hard work, establishing himself as a successful professional and a community leader. The story reminds us that whether one came to the United States inMayflower, in a slave ship or in a modern airplane, we are all in the same boat now (a partial quote from Jay Leno). One is limited only by one’s imagination and willingness to work hard and selflessly share one’s talents.Dr. Menon went on to become the the President of McGovern Allergy and Asthma Clinic . He is the recipient of many awards and honors including ‘Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine’, London, England.Like Mahatma Gandhi, Menon seems to believe that “my life is my message”. He tells this story with eloquence and brio. It is an engrossing story told with humor and humility.

There are also beautiful pictures included that provide a window into Dr. Menon's eventful life and adventures. This book is a tribute to his extended family and friends, from the past to present. The reader becomes transported to a bygone era in India. It is fascinating to follow Dr. Menon's journey to the United States. Dr. Menon has accomplished a great deal as a physician, father, and community leader. His book, in my opinion, will be read by people even a hundred years from now, as they seek to understand the journey made by very courageous, ambitious, and accomplished Indians who came to the USA to become Americans, while seeking new frontiers for themselves and their families. It is a riveting tale, with healthy doses of humor included along with great drama. I encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to read it. It's highly entertaining, yet also educational and thought provoking. I extend my personal thanks to Dr. Menon. I've known Dr. Menon for many years and I thank "Uncle Venugopal" for the "yeoman's work" he put into this labor of love. I'm certain that "My Mother Called Me Unni" will touch the hearts and minds of readers for many years.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Succinct Babe biography By PL I've been on a biography kick lately. There's just something inspiring reading about the life of one of your heroes. I've seen a few TV specials on Babe Ruth, but this the first book I've read about him. It covers everything from his early life to his career to his death. It's written in a way that's both concise and thorough. All the essential facts are there without the fluff. Even though I knew a fair bit about Babe before reading, I learned a lot from this book. Definitely worth getting if you're a Babe Ruth fan wanting a succinct biography.

I was pretty intrigued by this book, however, so I picked it up. It's a pretty quick read, about 58 pages, but it did give me a good idea of his background, family life, the challenges he faced etc. It definitely gave me a better picture of Babe Ruth--beyond the label of "baseball legend." This book is very well researched and very well written... and inspirational as well. Excellent read.

While this book can be enjoyed on its own By S Smith Having read "Love, Hickory" a couple of years ago, I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel to see how the story ended. Problem is, when I got to the end the last thing I wanted was for the story to end! While this book can be enjoyed on its own, you will enjoy it even more if you read "Love, Hickory" first in order to get to know the story of Rappy and Alyce. The author, whom I've had the pleasure of meeting, has a real talent for drawing you into the story and making you feel like you actually know the characters. From Rappys kegerator in the family room, to Steven the neighbor, to the gardening obsession followed by the trunk loaded down with newspapers during the recycling "hobby" phase, to the wreck on Government Street and subsequent ride in a police cruiser to the Mardi Gras ball, I laughed a lot and even teared up at times.Congratulations, Tommy, on another beautifully written book. I hope that this will not be the end of your career as a writer of memoirs, and that perhaps you will write your own memoir of your South of the Salt Line Theater productions and your Saudi teaching days. You have a keen ability to see the irony and humor in life and share it with others.

Anyone born and raised mid-century in Mobile Catholic schools as I was would be familiar with at least some members of the Perez family. Large Catholic families were the norm back then, so I could definitely relate as I laughed and sniffled my way through this touching farewell to Alice.

Bukowsky "Normal" is Graeme Cameron's depiction of an unnamed killer who had a dysfunctional childhood, but has somehow amassed enough money to do whatever he wants. One of his favorite pastimes is abducting, killing, and dismembering young women.For reasons known only to him, he decides to lock a twenty-year old waitress in a cage for months, but does not immediately kill her, as he did her predecessors. His prisoner is tough and resilient and earns her jailer's grudging respect. Meanwhile, the perpetrator meets a supermarket cashier for whom he develops romantic feelings; she, in return, naively thinks that he is Mr. Right. Can he start over after having committed so many horrific crimes? Throughout the novel, our antihero shows a few traces of humanity, but nevertheless continues to leave a trail of bodies in his wake. He is clever and careful, but ultimately makes mistakes that may come back to haunt him.Some have compared "Normal" to the Dexter series, but Cameron does not have Jeff Lindsay's ability to successfully combine satire, dark humor, and suspense into a coherent narrative. Nor is the protagonist as ingratiating and likeable as Dexter Morgan. The author's central theme--someone may look and act perfectly ordinary, yet be mentally unbalanced--should be obvious to anyone who reads a newspaper. Even those who are fascinated by abnormal psychology may find themselves cringing when this predator slaughters innocent people. Nor does it help that the policemen trying to apprehend him are so dimwitted and ineffectual. Ultimately, it is not particularly enjoyable to spend three hundred pages in the company of this creepy sociopath, even if he has one or two redeeming qualities.

Not your typical serial killer By knittingmom Normal by Graeme Cameron is probably the first book I have read that begins with an extremely twisted serial killer and turns into a love story. While well written, it is difficult for me to wrap my head around what I read. I really enjoy twisted serial killer books, however I am not a real fan of romance novels and mixing the two creates a dilemma for me. Cameron creates the perfect serial killer, he could be anyone, he lives in a nicely kept house in a nicely kept neighborhood, he runs into neighbors everyday, and yet he has a torture chamber of sorts under his garage, however no one would suspect by his polite manner or appearance. So far do good, a lovely creepy serial killer and then the twist, he falls in love with the checker at the 24 hour grocery while shopping for food for his current victim who is caged in his secret basement. Normal begins with a deeply disturbed serial killer and then turns into an almost dark comedy of sorts, when Cameron has his killer fall in love with Rachel. I am not a psychiatrist, therefore I cannot say just how plausible this part is, however it is interesting to read how our sadistic murderer attempts to win Rachel while keeping a prisoner in his hidden basement. As odd as the storyline may sound, Cameron’s masterful writing and story lines keeps the reader fully engaged. My only regret is I did not have someone to discuss the ending of this book.

Usually, when that happens, I browse through other reviews to find points I can relate to, and things I see differently. But with this book, the opinions are so divided I still don’t know whether I like it, or I hate it.At its core, Normal is a book about a serial killer who blends in completely with his surroundings. However, he’s adept at kidnapping young girls, putting them in a cage and eventually killing him. So he’s a monster, in a way. But when this serial killer, who doesn’t get a name during the book – which works surprisingly well – meets a girl at the checkout from the 24-hour grocery and falls in love with her. He doesn’t want to kill anymore, he doesn’t want to hunt people anymore, all he wants to do is love this girl. But he has a few problems. Like the girl he has hidden in his basement. The girl he just killed. The police right on his heels.So, I like the premise. A serial killer who suddenly doesn’t want to kill anymore. I like it, but I’m not buying it. Especially not the way it’s written here, with the whole falling in love thing (which happens way too fast, and is unrealistic). The book reminded me of the final seasons of Dexter, when he falls in love with this female murderer. Things went downhill fast after that storyline was introduced, and the same thing happens in this book. The plot sets out for an excellent psychological thriller on the first few pages, but then turns into a laughable chase between the killer and the police, and him suddenly befriending not one but two women, and then having a third seemingly attracted to him as well. I’m sorry, but finding so many people attracted to a serial killer is almost impossible. And then the way the police handles things? That was laugh out loud hilarious. I’m all for dark humor, but it needs to be realistic, and that’s what this book is lacking.We also never get a back story into the killer’s mind. Why does he kill these women? Why hold them in a cage for so long? Nothing is ever explained, and since we spent the entire book firmly in the killer’s mind, we should get an explanation as to why he does the things he does.The characters are dull. Their behavior is erratic. The women never reach beyond the personality of a cardboard figure, especially not the love interest. The behavior of the characters kept contradicting itself, which was just plain annoying.On the other hand, I did enjoy the writing style, and I felt like, although we got no back story, I got a good impression of what went on in the killer’s mind. However, the story was just too unrealistic and the characters’ behavior too out of place for me to truly enjoy it. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
