Example in this ebook CHAPTER I. A DISTANT VIEW. On the second of January, in the year 1880, three newly-orphaned sisters, finding themselves left to their own devices, with an income of exactly one hundred pounds a year a-piece, sat down to consult together as to the use they should make of their independence. The place where they sat was a grassy cliff overlooking a wide bay of the Southern Ocean—a lonely spot, whence no sign of human life was visible, except in the sail of a little fishing boat far away. The low sun, that blazed at the back of their heads, and threw their shadows and the shadow of every blade of grass into relief, touched that distant sail and made it shine like bridal satin; while a certain island rock, the home of sea-birds, blushed like a rose in the same necromantic light. As they sat, they could hear the waves breaking and seething on the sands and stones beneath them, but could only see the level plain of blue and purple water stretching from the toes of their boots to the indistinct horizon. That particular Friday was a terribly hot day for the colony, as weather records testify, but in this favoured spot it had been merely a little too warm for comfort, and, the sea-breeze coming up fresher and stronger as the sun went down, it was the perfection of an Australian summer evening at the hour of which I am writing. "What I want," said Patty King (Patty was the middle one), "is to make a dash—a straight-out plunge into the world, Elizabeth—no shilly-shallying and dawdling about, frittering our money away before we begin. Suppose we go to London—we shall have enough to cover our travelling expenses, and our income to start fair with—surely we could live anywhere on three hundred a year, in the greatest comfort—and take rooms near the British Museum?—or in South Kensington?—or suppose we go to one of those intellectual German towns, and study music and languages? What do you think, Nell? I am sure we could do it easily if we tried." "Oh," said Eleanor, the youngest of the trio, "I don't care so long as we go somewhere, and do something." "What do you think, Elizabeth?" pursued the enterprising Patty, alert and earnest. "Life is short, and there is so much for us to see and learn—all these years and years we have been out of it so utterly! Oh, I wonder how we have borne it! How have we borne it—to hear about things and never to know or do them, like other people! Let us get into the thick of it at once, and recover lost time. Once in Europe, everything would be to our hand—everything would be possible. What do you think?" "My dear," said Elizabeth, with characteristic caution, "I think we are too young and ignorant to go so far afield just yet." "We are all over twenty-one," replied Patty quickly, "and though we have lived the lives of hermits, we are not more stupid than other people. We can speak French and German, and we are quite sharp enough to know when we are being cheated. We should travel in perfect safety, finding our way as we went along. And we do know something of those places—of Melbourne we know nothing." "We should never get to the places mother knew—the sort of life we have heard of. And Mr. Brion and Paul are with us here—they will tell us all we want to know. No, Patty, we must not be reckless. We might go to Europe by-and-bye, but for the present let Melbourne content us. It will be as much of the world as we shall want to begin with, and we ought to get some experience before we spend our money—the little capital we have to spend." "You don't call two hundred and thirty-five pounds a little, do you?" interposed Eleanor. This was the price that a well-to-do storekeeper in the neighbouring township had offered them for the little house which had been their home since she was born, and to her it seemed a fortune. "Three newly-orphaned sisters, finding themselves left to their own devices" By sally tarbox Highly enjoyable work from 1890; the author was an English emigrant to Australia, and this is set (mostly) in 1880 Melbourne. The story opens with the three sisters all in their 20s and newly orphaned. Their strange, taciturn father has just died, (their mother - a charming and cultured woman passed away some years ago) and they are planning an exciting future.Leaving their rural cottage they settle in Melbourne, where they are under the protection of the son of the family solicitor....As they gradually move into 'society' and find themselves taken up by the childless Duff-Scotts, their lives are to change at a rate of knots, with romance, misunderstandings and a huge secret which is to alter things forever...A little 'Mills and Boone' in places, notably when describing the adorable Mr Kingscote Yelverton, the author somehow manages to carry it off and produces an extremely enjoyable novel.

‘Many years ago in Mytherranea, before the stars had names, when daisies were still called days’ eyes, and the moon stayed up all night to keep the darkness company, there lived a race called redbits…’So begins the tale of Rensal, a small creature trying to make sense of a big world. Running along one day, Rensal bumps into the Tall One, a wise and mysterious redbit who loves to talk. Over tea, toast, and berries, the friends discuss life, love, creation, dreams, death, and everything else that lies under the sun. This is a book that gets to the heart of what it is to be young, of the joys and sorrows and confusions of childhood, and of the questions that continue to be pertinent even when we are full-grown – how we live, how we love, and what – if anything – it all means.Rensal the Redbit captures the depth and magic of child psychoanalysis through the exploits of a miniature animal who befriends a “tall one” and enters into a series of daily dialogues that expand his psychological horizons forever.

Rensal the Redbit: A Psychoanalytic Fairy Tale (Karnac Library Series), by Eugene J. Mahon

Review "Eugene Mahon has written a dreamily whimsical, charming little book that is lovely to read and a delight to review. It is as poetic as it is philosophical, as undefinable in purpose as it is recognizable in the array of concerns expressed in it, as private as it is broad in its appeal. In a fantasyland that also is recognizable as our very own world, lives a young redbit (very like a rabbit but infinitely more singular, with his colorful pelt and piercingly inquiring mind). He romps and plays, as the young will do when circumstance allows. Increasingly, however, he is interrupted in his carefree child’s pleasures by observations of the nature around him and the nature within him. These command his attention and force him to stop what he is doing, cock his head, and wonder what and why. One day, he stumbles upon a marvelously Lincolnesque “tall one” who somehow has not forgotten what it was like to be awakened out of youthful innocence by increasingly coalescing glimpses of the wonderful and the terrible that constitute the animate and inanimate world that surrounds us and of which we are a living, breathing, feeling, acting part. Quizzically ambiguous, sadly sagacious, but ever patient and unintrusively kind and loving, he is ideally suited as an interested listener, a compassionate comforter, a wise facilitator, and a source of necessary bits of information that cannot be easily enough obtained elsewhere. The redbit makes regular visits to the tall one, who becomes his welcome friend. As they refresh themselves with endless cups of tea and slices of toast, augmented on occasion by a handful of fresh-picked berries plucked from the bounty around them, they converse about life and its manifold mysteries. Birth, death, love, hate, the warmth of safety and security, the thrill of daring and adventure, the here and now, the worlds that can be visited only with the soaring imagination, the awe-inspiring universe, the universal awfulness of the redbit (i.e., human) world of which they are a part--all is grist for their mill. Is this a parable about child psychoanalysis? Is it an inspiring but sadly poetic depiction of the joys and sorrows of parenthood? Is it a bittersweet expression of the nostalgic yearning for a youth which adults can no longer have except vicariously? As you will. The reader has prerogatives as well as the author. As for me, I hope that the story of little Rensal finds in his readers kindred spirits who will be able to read it from the heart. This slim volume, comparable to the best poetic fables of Aesop, Orwell, and Thurber, is simply a joy to read." (Martin A. Silverman)

Having finished it I wasn't sure whether Rensal the Redbit was a children's book or a book for children and adults of all ages. The language is simple but highly poetic. The dialogue between Rensal and The Tall One is often very wise and deep. At first Rensal is frightened by the Tall One but gradually they become close friends and talk about very deep issues such as war. death, God, prejudice and much more as each short chapter introduces a new topic. When the book ends you don't want it to end and you go back and start reading again and then the enchantment starts all over again. It's like a poem that delivers a little further meaning each time you let the words work their magic on you. There is much more that I could say but I think it is best for each reader to experience this little classic for him or herself. This book reminds me of The Little Prince and that is the greatest praise I could bestow on it, a praise it richly deserves.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great! By cw As a parent, I was always one of those very "very verbal" (albeit in a positive way) supporters of my children's sports activities. I felt as though it was fun for them to try many different sports to see where their interests and abilities led hem. Now it seems, from my perspective as a grandparent, that the level of playing has reached such a degree that private lessons, sports camps, and an early commitment to play only a single sport has replaced the fun and social interaction. This is an informative book for coaches and parents of children of all ages.

I had questions on how to navigate my children through youth sports and this book is a great guide. Steve Locker talks about conflict resolution, and the power that FUN has in keeping children involved in sports. A must read for parents and coaches!

By Amazon Customer It's my first time camping in the wilderness with friends and I am totally not at ease. Part of me is really excited about the fun and adventure and part of me is very anxious about facing unknown situations. So I was hoping to learn some survival techniques. The first fear that I had in my mind was about creepy looking insects. Tips and tricks to ward off the insects and recognizing the poisonous plants was the first chapter that I have read and they seem pretty good. I also found the tips regarding navigation, purification of water, obtaining food and building shelter useful.

The writing in this book is at best a high school level outline of a book idea at best. First aid advice is to have aspirin and a sewing kit incase you need to stitch someone up? Lots of berries abound if you need them to survive, but don't eat red or white ones? And the best, " core out a piece of tree root, fashion it into a bowl and then use it (a wood bowl?) to boil water for survival. I was amazed. Seems like the author looked a pictures in an old Ranger Rick magazine and tried to describe them. Really sad and obviously no effort.

By Heidi Camping and trekking in the wilderness is loaded with fun and there are endless activities to do. But fun can turn into disaster when not prepared well. Sometimes our sophisticated technologies might not work out there. So it's best to learn the navigation techniques using maps and compass. Even that sounds fun to me. Learning to make fire, finding food and water, cooking, first aid etc leading such independent life is so adventurous. When everything goes well it's an experience of a lifetime. I found this book very informative.

While Wisconsin is now perhaps best known for its die-hard love of both the Green Bay Packers and its cheese, deep beneath the surface of Wisconsin history simmers a cesspool of nightmares that began before the term serial killer had been coined. The horror started when Ed Gein tried desperately to bring back his dead mother by first exhuming bodies, then by killing in order to harvest female body parts that he himself would wear. His story sparked a nation’s macabre fascination with American serial killers, though its bizarre tale of grave robbing and decorating with the dead meant that when other true crime stories surfaced from the state, no one was terribly surprised. Ed Gein was among the first to undergo criminal profiling – was he transgender, a woman trapped in a man’s body, or did he really just miss his mother? – but he would not be the last. Wisconsin’s infamous list of true crime serial killers includes the lonely Jeffrey Dahmer, who attempted science experiments in hopes of creating a sex slave to call his own, sex criminal David Spanbauer, who preferred raping little girls when he got the chance, and Walter Ellis, who preyed on prostitutes because he thought he would be able to get away with it. Turns out, he could, for more than a decade. Wisconsin is full of secrets, and very bad men. This biography of four prolific serial killers steps into the heart of the state’s madness, and is likely to make their nightmares yours, at least for a spine-tingling night or two, especially when you realize that what happens in the movies is sometimes horrifyingly real.

By Jessica I'm a huge true crime fan.Especially from Jack Rosewood's work. What I love the most about his books is that I always learn something new. He always write about cases that isn't as mainstream or talked about as the Ted Bundy or whatever. In this book we get to read about four serial killers from Wisconsin. I had only read a little bit about Ed Gein before but I didn't know much more than that he did practice canibalism before I read this. I also knew abit about Dahmer since before. But the other two monsters I hadn't heard of before and they were quite interesting.Easy 5 stars!

By Medea Lindgren I received a review copy of this book, this is my honest opinion.I must say that Jack Rosewood probably got the best covers in the true crime genres, they're amazing! And so are the books! I think this is a book that every person from Wisconsin should read, it's a big part of their history. The chapters about most serial killers aren't that long but I feel like the author captures the important facts all the time and doesn't make the pages longer than they have to be just for the sake of it.

AMERICA’S BEAUTIFUL DAIRYLAND HAS A “DARK SECRET” By Robin Leigh Morgan I’ve once again been fortunate to obtain an e-book copy of a true crime book written by this author, Jack Rosewood and the following is my honest opinion. One would never expect that Wisconsin, “America’s Dairyland,” could also be the home of four of most vile serial killers known to this state? I find it ironic, according to Wikipedia, as to the origin for this state’s name, in that one leading theory holds that the name originated from the Miami word Meskonsing, meaning "it lies red," a reference to the setting of the Wisconsin River as it flows through the reddish sandstone of the Wisconsin Dells. But after writing this book, I have to wonder if it can also refer to the blood of the victims staining the landscape.Instead of concentrating his efforts, and this time with the aid of fellow author Dwayne Walker writing the introduction, to give us one depraved serial killer, we’ve been given four. While the names of Ed Gein, David Spanbauer, and Walter Ellis might evoke horrific memories to those living in Wisconsin; Jeffrey Dahmer evokes these same memories across the United States.Mr. Rosewood has given to the aficionados of the True Crime genre of books, a book which cuts to the chase regarding the story of four infamous serial killers from Wisconsin; their lives, crimes, and ultimate capture and trial, as well as what might have been the psychological reason for their depraved behavoir in a very readable and enjoyable manner.I believe reading one of the books in this series, might get you wanting to read more; it’s happen to me; which is why I’ve given these two authors 5 STARS.

“An off-beat love story…alternately deeply moving and laugh-aloud funny.” ―Good Housekeeping

“Jon Cohen conjures magic, weaving a gentle romantic fantasy of piercing and eccentric beauty.” ―Boston Globe

Since he was disfigured in a fire sixteen years ago, recluse Louis Malone has remained hidden from the prying eyes of his neighbors in the small town of Waverly.

Across town, Iris Shula, a lonely and unlovely nurse knows, at thirty-seven, it is unlikely that her Prince Charming will ever appear. But Iris is about to learn how wrong she is.

When Louis accidently falls out of his second story window these two kindred souls are brought together. What unfolds is a most unlikely love story. One that will make you laugh and that will break―and remake―your heart.

Book Lust Rediscoveries is a series devoted to reprinting some of the best (and now out of print) novels originally published from 1960 to 2000. Each book is personally selected by NPR commentator and Book Lust author Nancy Pearl and includes an introduction by her, as well as discussion questions for book groups and a list of recommended further reading.

The Man in the Window (Nancy Pearl's Book Lust Rediscoveries), by Jon Cohen

From Library Journal The man in the window is Louis Malone, whose disfigurement in a fire has caused him to view the world from his window for half of his 32 years. When he finally ventures out for his father's funeral, he inadvertently meets Iris, a dumpy nurse at the town hospital. The growing relationship between these two lonely, self-proclaimed "monsters" is the focal point of this gentle tale. We also meet their widowed parents and explore the loneliness known to those who lose their mates after a long and successful marriage. For a book concerned with loneliness, mutilation, and death, this is remarkably upbeat, filled with easy humor. These characters may lead limited lives, but they come to understand that life's simple joys are its most precious. No sex, violence, or intrigue, just a fine writer telling a good story about decent people. Cohen is the author of Max Lakeman and the Beautiful Stranger ( LJ 3/1/90). Recommended.- Dan Bogey, Clearfield Cty. P.L. Federation, Curwensville, Pa.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews By the author of the arresting Max Lakeman and the Beautiful Stranger (1990): a Marty-themed, whimsical novel with flashes of bright fantasy and high hilarity--all about two losing loners who find each other--and love. The story begins with the death of retired hardware-store owner Atlas Malone--no simple affair, involving as it does greetings, conversing with, and digging the message of a most familiar angel. Here, dying is a far from peaceful matter--whether in the Malone preserves, where live Atlas's wife Gracie and horribly disfigured son Louis, or in the Intensive Care Unit of the local hospital, where toils short, squat, unlovely Iris. Take one long-term patient, the dying comatose Tube Man who will speak--one ghostly word at a time. Then there's the town undertaker, who grabbed a gold ring after dying--for a reason having to do with an old dirty deed. Another wrongdoer will show up in the hospital, the ever-drunk Harvey, a link to Louis because Harvey had shared a transcendent moment with Louis 16 years before, when the teen-age and then handsome Louis had yet to be disfigured by the fire Harvey claims he set. Of course, Louis, a recluse these many years, always encased in a scarf and hat, and Iris the lowly and lonely, do get together--but it's only after Louis's plummet (or was it an ascension?) from a second-story window and a gathering of the world as represented by the neighbors who accompany him in a loud caravan to the hospital. Then, while Iris and Louis heed the incredible summons to love, Gracie and Iris's tottery father also pair off. An attractive flight into romance's more fabulous dimension- -but whether or not the fantastic palls, the ructions and crackings wise by the nurses laboring at incredible machines and patients are a fascination and delight. Cohen continues to bemuse and entertain. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review "An off-beat love story…alternately deeply moving and laugh-aloud funny." —Good Housekeeping"A fascination and a delight…a whimsical novel with flashes of bright fantasy and high hilarity….An attractive flight into romance’s more fabulous dimension." —Kirkus Reviews"Jon Cohen conjures magic, weaving a gentle romantic fantasy of piercing and eccentric beauty." —Boston Globe"Amusing, entertaining, and haunting…With his style of mystical, humorous imagery, Jon Cohen creates characters and scenes that stay with a reader for a long time." —St. Louis Dispatch"His characters are drawn with such affection that even the meanest is bathed in the warmth of his humor…A novel to savor." —Time Out"The Man in the Window is written with a vivid cinematographic eye and ear for black humor.  It is irreverent and boisterous, a novel about loneliness, love, and the basic human needs of even the most unlikely." —Washington Times

The description of each character and their sometimes humorous, sometimes sad stories made me feel like I knew each of them personally. This beautifully written book had me laughing at times and sometimes filled with sadness. I love a story that provokes such different responses throughout the journey it takes me on. I truly loved loved loved this book. I am going to miss Arnie, Iris, and Louis so much. I am also going to miss the amazing imagery this author brought to life in this wonderful book.

By Karen DiSanto Absolutely loved this book--it was quietly engaging and truly different from so many stories! My book club had a meeting with the author, Jon Cohen, as he is a local author. The evening was warm and full of laughter and discussion. Jon even read excerpts from his current work in progress. Loved the choice of characters in The Man in the Window, the attention to detail without being too wordy, and Jon's take on the many faces of human nature. I can honestly say that as I read the book I was not tempted to skip over parts to move things along (as I usually do when reading a novel.) Every word counts in this book and I savored every bite! Great read...highly recommend it and am looking forward to Jon's next novel.

The broad outline of the plot is no surprise, but it doesn't need to be. The characters are compelling. It's the sort of book that draws you into its bubble, and after you're done the feeling lingers on, and you want to go find everything Jon Cohen ever wrote and read it all. In a word, I'd describe this novel as "luminous."

An Inspirational Example of True Grit By Author Jude Johnson This is a remarkable story of determination, courage, and heartbreak told by the firefighter who lived through it all. I read this in one evening, genuinely anxious to see how Dennis Bracety fared. He is a firefighter in my town, though I have never met him, and I am amazed at his grit and fortitude in managing his struggle with Dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disease classified within the Muscular Dystrophy field. His fight to live and somehow resume a semblance of normalcy is amazing. The writing is straightforward and not prosaic, like listening to a buddy tell you the levels of hell he's been through. [Bless you, Firefighter Bracety, and best of luck for the future.] While not absolutely perfect, I'd give it four and a half stars if I could. This will put your minor quibbles into perspective. Well worth reading.

The author is a very perceptive man who is able to communicate his innermost feelings to the reader through his excellent writing. There's no whitewash here. Dennis tells it as it is. You can only admire how he overcame some of life's worst impediments by never allowing himself to give up. This is the type of person who should be held up as a role model, rather than the celebrities the public usually likes to idolize. An inspirational read. I highly recommend it!

Excerpt from Chapters in the History of the Insane in the British IslesI think it was Pascal who said that the last thing an author does in making a book is to discover what to put at the beginning. This discovery is easily made in the present instance.I wish to state that the range of this book, as its title implies, is mainly restricted to the salient points of the historical sketch it attempts to pourtray. To have written a complete History of the Insane in the British Isles would have necessitated the narration of details uninteresting to the general reader. Hence, as the periods and the institutions of greatest importance have alone been brought into prominence, others have been inevitably thrown into the shade.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When I got married in 1997, I embarked on a journey to write a Christmas letter that our families and friends would look forward to pulling from their mailboxes. I wanted them to laugh at our letter – not because it was poorly written, but because it was amusing. But then, something unexpected happened…

One winter day, an anesthesiologist at my wife’s hospital (my wife doesn’t actually own the hospital, she just works there) approached her.

He said, “Your family Christmas letter was hilarious.”

“I don’t recall sending you a letter, Doctor - (squinting at his nametag) Morphiney,” my wife replied politely.

“You didn’t,” he smiled. “One of the nurses pinned it up on the staff bulletin board with a ‘Must Read’ sticky note on it.”

Requests for the letter from different hospital employees my wife didn’t know –and even requests for back issues of our letters for cross reference - continued to happen each December…

So, now, during this Holiday Season of Giving, we’ve decided the time has come to share our “book” of letters with EVERYONE – and that includes YOU.

Dutch Courage and Other Stories, by Jack London

About the Author Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A posthumous collection of odds and ends By Karl Janssen Dutch Courage is a collection of short stories by Jack London that was originally published in 1922, about six years after his death. It gathers together ten stories that had not been included in any of his previous short story collections. The preface by London's widow Charmian, which is more confusing than helpful, states that the common thread that binds these stories together is that they are all suitable for young audiences. Be that as it may, even though many of these stories feature teenaged protagonists and were originally published in boy's pulp magazines like The Youth's Companion, they don't seem as dumbed down or as tame as some of London's more obviously youth-oriented fiction like the short stories in Tales of the Fish Patrol or the novel The Cruise of the Dazzler. However, you won't find the sort of bleak fatalism that permeates famous London works like The Call of the Wild or "To Build a Fire". These stories are all straightforward examples of entertaining adventure fiction, devoid of philosophy or politics. With one exception, the stories included in Dutch Courage are some of the first works London ever wrote. London's first published story, "Typhoon Off the Coast of Japan", written when he was 17, was the winning entry in a writing contest sponsored by the San Francisco Morning Call. In this descriptive sketch, seal hunters in their scattered boats struggle to return to their schooner before a big storm hits. Once safely on board, the crew rides out the typhoon as it pummels their ship. It is an impressive piece of work for a teenager, and shows the nascent talent that would spawn a stellar career. There are other selections that are even more auspicious. "Chris Farrington, Able Seaman" is a better, more fictionalized account of the "Typhoon" story. In "The Lost Poacher," another sealing schooner inadvertently drifts into Russian waters, forcing the crew to face the possibility of capture and imprisonment in the salt mines of Siberia. "In Yeddo Bay" is a more comical tale of a young sailor in Yokohama who loses his purse, then must find a way to get back to his ship with empty pockets. Not all the stories deal with sailing. The brief and predictable "Bald-Face" is the only tale of the Klondike Gold Rush included here. "The Banks of the Sacramento," one of the better offerings, features a fourteen-year-old boy, the son of a mine watchman, who is left to mind the operation while his father is out of town. The title selection, "Dutch Courage" involves two young men attempting to climb Half Dome in Yosemite. "An Adventure in the Upper Sea" takes place in a hot air balloon. The originality of the setting, unfortunately, is the only good thing it has going for it.The final entry in the book, "Whose Business is to Live," is by far the longest, and unlike the others it was written at the tail end of London's career. It takes place in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. When the American Navy lands in Veracruz, the offended Mexicans retaliate against any gringos they can find. A small party of Americans in Tampico must make a 50 mile trip upriver to rescue their stranded loved ones. It offers nonstop action, but it's somewhat of a confusing mess. It demonstrates the overindulgence characteristic of many of London's later stories.Only the most diehard London fans need read Dutch Courage. It's a hodgepodge of good and bad pieces, with nothing really outstanding. While not a bad bunch of stories overall, when compared to almost any other collection published during London's lifetime, it just doesn't measure up.

About the Author I was born in 1957 in Houston, Texas. I had a long career in the oilfields of South Texas, before going back to earn a business degree from Texas A&M University. Though I started as Class of '80, I finished as Class of '91. One of my favorite T-shirts says, "College, the 12 best years of my life!" and I mean it. Once I started back, I found it difficult to stop, earning an MS from A&M and a Ph. D. from the University of Colorado. I have served on the faculty of UTSA, Idaho State University, and the University of St. Thomas, in Houston. I have worked with a variety of marketing research firms to measure, analyze, and develop customer/brand relationships. I founded Storyed Solutions to provide marketing and management research solutions to industry and higher education. I have been married for over 30 years, to the same wife, and have three lovely daughters. I learned to surf, at 49, when we decided to move back to Texas, from Idaho. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. In Old Guy Surfing I share my learning experiences, along with strategies and techniques to keep old guys surfing into old age. I enjoy writing and have several book projects in process. Most of my work is based on research, or the application of business models to everyday life. Look for more books in the near future.

Mallory is back and facing a two-fisted whodunit: Who’s responsible for the just-discovered “lost novel” by the celebrated author of The Maltese Falcon? Is it the master, Dashiell Hammett, himself, or a very cunning counterfeiter? And who’s behind the shocking, suspicious demise of Roscoe Kane, a hard-drinking, hard-boiled crime-novel pioneer? Aptly enough, this one-two punch of a puzzle is the talk of Bouchercon, the famed convention where mystery scribes gather to honor (and murder?) their own. But Mallory may be the only one who’s tired of talking. He’s got a heavy-duty hunch, a hotel full of suspects, and a hard lesson to teach…namely, you don’t mess with a man’s heroes. Chicago’s dark side may be no place for armchair detectives, but Mallory’s no stranger to true crime. And before he leaves the Windy City, he means to strike more than a few blows in defense of his fallen comrades…and against the evil that men do.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A mystery set at a mystery writers convention By Carol Peterson Hennekens This is a fun first novel. It's set at the Boucheron (the big national mystery writers convention) in Chicago in 1984. Mallory's mentor and hero is found dead in the bathtub and there are rumors flying of a newly discovered Hammett. Add in a variety of writing types, two widows of the dead man, a slimy publisher and a cute magazine editor. It's a fun, light read - not cozy cute nor noir dark. I'll read more of this series.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Fun mystery novel By Jim Lester This is a terrific little mystery novel for hard core mystery fans. The story is set in a mystery writers convention (Bouchercon) and includes a clever blend of real writers and fictional characters. There's lots of inside info and jokes about the mystery writing profession not to mention numerous pop culture references which really make the book fun. Collins throws in a solid whodunit and the whole thing adds up to an enjoyable reading experience. Max Allan Collins is an extremely popular and versatile writer and although this is one of his earlier and lesser efforts, its still a worthwhile book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. disappointing By reader It wasn't horrible and I did want to know the ending but there wasn't much information on the ex-wife, son or even the current wife of the victim. There was a lot of fluff thrown in, which accounted for most of the book, that had nothing to do with the story.
