Great Handbook for Teen Athletes By lisa kilborn Michael Zarian, a decorated young swimmer, shares exactly how he continues to achieve his athletic goals. He explains how and why teenagers should focus on every detail, from waking up early to adhering to a schedule to being coachable. While thousands of high schoolers would love to win just one tennis match or one footrace, Michael reveals what separates those who set themselves up to win from those who simply wonder how they do it.As Michael illustrates, it takes tremendous discipline and teamwork--and sometimes thick skin--to earn success as a teen athlete. The book's title says it all.Buy it for your kids or young athletes you know, as well as coaches and parents. It also serves as a great handbook for basic life skills.

“A beautiful, beautiful novel” Ananda Devi

Zara Hamilton leads an apparently charmed life as a human rights lawyer in London – but she is haunted by questions about her past. Why did her mother disappear? What made her college sweetheart, the Maharaja of Trivikrampur, abandon her? Why did her husband renege on a plan to return to her native India? And why has she avoided visiting her much-loved family home in Qila, Trivikrampur? After ten years as a Muslim in Britain, bereft of a homeland, Zara finally seeks the answers. When she returns to Qila, her world is shatteringly different, her aristocratic family mired in complications and far-right politics on the rise. Amid the unrest of a changing nation, Zara seeks the key to her mother's secret as contemporary resentments clash with a harmonious past. “A Restless Wind piques the reader's interest from the very beginning with fine details and a strong and engaging protagonist.” The Deccan Herald “Husain deftly handles a feast of characters and twisting plots. This is a cleverly written, challenging novel which asks the question what does it mean to be happy and fulfilled? … A rare glimpse of what life may or may not be like for modern Indian royalty. A fascinating read.” The Asian Writer “A fascinating emotional narrative of an expatriate, A Restless Wind intertwines the old with the new in modern India.” Muneeza Shamsie, Newsline (Pakistan) “When India Exotic meets India Embattled a great new transcontinental heroine is born. Husain has put the characters together with great care. But it is Zara who is the novel's anchor and her confusion over her identity propels the plot.” Kaveree Bamzai, India Today

Well-written expatriate story By Casey Living There are many that leave their native lands for better opportunities in other countries or for a variety of reasons and the life of an expatriate isn't always as adventurous and glamorous as some may believe. It is often filled with solitude, loneliness, and confusion. This can be a heartbreaking surprise for some who aren't prepared for this and author Shahrukh Husain has written a wonderful story about just such a journey in her "A Restless Wind".The story of Zara Hamilton, a human rights lawyer in London who should be quite happy and content, yet isn't. She is from a place called Qila, Trivikrampur, which is presumably in India, and has lived in Britain for ten years. Over the course of that time, she has found success but has continued to question much about her past, such as the disappearance of her mother and why her love in college abandoned her. Finally, the questions pile upon her enough that she does return home and finds things so much different than she expected. Her family has changed, politics are incredibly complicated and Zara finally decides to get to the bottom of what happened to her mother so many years ago.I found this to be a very well written story about a woman who is haunted by much that she doesn't understand. She has all of the material things of life laid at her feet and realizes that this is not what is going to bring her peace, so sets off to find just that. A well written story that was touching and very intriguing. Recommended.

Thomas Munson Life of an expatriate in a new land can be hard and tiresome, yet when one leaves at her own discretion to further pursue better life opportunities one would think life would be quite happy and satisfied. For Zara Hamilton, life was expected to be a happier change in London for this Human Rights Lawyer having a having found success, yet the overwhelming feeling of distress, does not allow for a happy feeling. Zara however, find her thoughts lingering to her past where in, her mother had disappeared and the love of her life had abandoned her. The weight of the concern is too much for her to bear while in London, so Zara ventures back to her native land of Qila Trivikrampur to discover the truths behind her questions.Shahrukh Husain’s Restless Winds, delivers a truly inspiring story; one that so many in this great world of ours could greatly appreciate and relate too. This story was both touching and inspirational, a high recommend for the questioning soul.

Searching the Past By lynne A Restless Wind is a poignant, moving and provocative tale about searching for opportunities and a new life elsewhere, with the added mysterious twist about reflection and unresolved matters in the past. The clever interweave of these issues is what separates this from similar books and creates a strong link with the reader, it did with me anyway, and once absorbed by plot and character I did not want to put it down. I previously hadn’t heard of Shahrukh Husain but I’ll be working my way through her back catalogue of books. Real excellence shining through from contemporary London and mysterious Pakistan.

Hardy’s Love Triangle

“There are disappointments which wring us, and there are those which inflict a wound whose mark we bear to our graves. Such are so keen that no future gratification of the same desire can ever obliterate them: they become registered as a permanent loss of happiness.” - Thomas Hardy, A Pair of Blue Eyes

Elfride Swancourt, a beautiful young woman, is caught between the love of two men: Stephen Smith, a low-born architect who wants to make a name for himself and Henry Knight, an older, respectable and established man. The two are friends and don’t know about each other’s feelings towards Elfride. How will they react when they find out? A Pair of Blue Eyes (Xist Classics), by Thomas Hardy

Review `What a joy it is to find World's Classics according to `new edition' status to that gentle romantic tale, A Pair of Blue Eyes, our enjoyment of which is enhanced by the editing and fine general and textual introductions by Alan Manford, whose knowledge and enthusiasm conspire to urge a revaluation of a novel which deserves a much wider readership.' Thomas Hardy Annual. No 5`A Pair Of Blue Eyes has a vivacity that makes the Great Works appear the lumbering heavy-weights they are.' Andrew Cowan, The Sunday Times

About the Author Thomas Hardy, (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist, in the tradition of George Eliot, he was also influenced both in his novels and poetry by Romanticism, especially by William Wordsworth. Charles Dickens is another important influence on Thomas Hardy. Like Charles Dickens he was also highly critical of much in Victorian society, though Hardy focussed more on a declining rural society. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life, and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially therefore he gained fame as the author of such novels as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895).

If it's been a while since you've treated yourself to his unrelenting destruction of any hope you may be harboring for his characters, indulge. The man never disappoints a cynic.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly compelling By A Customer This book was recommended by Amazon.com and I threw it in my shopping cart for fun. I found it surprisingly compelling. I do not remember ever reading Hardy before. His writing is wonderful and not at all old-fashioned, in fact, it is a modern book in sensibility. If you like books that care about characters and place, read it!

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. A pleasant read for Hardy fans (and some who aren't) By A Customer Blue Eyes describes the love triangle between a young woman and her two suitors. One is the socially inferior, but upwardly striving young man who adores her and connects her with her country past, while the other is the respectable, established, older man who represents London society. The heroine is caught between multiple expectations (those of the men, her parents, and society)and the desires of her own heart, which she does not always seem to know. The story is told lightly, however, never burying the reader with a gloomy shroud (until the very end). This is a good read for someone who enjoys Hardy and wants to sample his early works.

How did Elizabeth Smart survive nine months in captivity-and manage to forge a new life for herself? This is her story.

On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

"The inspirational and ultimately redemptive story of a teenage girl's descent into hell... and of the faith that fueled her determination to survive." -Kirkus Reviews

In My Story, Smart tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she convinced her captors to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served.

"[The book's] power lies in the way Smart presents herself-stronger but somehow still innocent." -The New Yorker

The complaints run from the Smart family "cashing in" on this horrific crime, to complaints about how the story was written. Elizabeth Smart is not a writer. She is just a young girl who lived thru a horrible ordeal (thru no fault of her own!) and came out on the other end a happy, well adjusted woman. The fact that her faith and family sustained her thru these 9 terrible months is truly inspiring!I'm sure it took her a long time to get thru all that has happened to her, but the fact that she has is unbelievable! For reviewers to suggest that she had opportunity to get away, or make comments about her "cashing in" is beyond comprehension. To the Smart family: Thank you for sharing your brutally honest, compelling story. Its a wonderful thing to see "Good" win out for a change.

Although my ordeal was almost 40 years ago it never completely goes away. Like Elizabeth my desire to overcome what happened by having a happy life as well as forgiving my captor is what makes this book so captivating. Somehow God has a way of helping you through anything if you allow Him to. This book is well written, very engaging, and honest to the core.

157 of 168 people found the following review helpful. Nightmare In America By Nicole Garrett Before I go into my review, I have to say something first.About two years ago, I read much of what Elizabeth talks about, in her trial transcript. A Utah online newspaper published her testimony and it was just as hellacious sounding to me, back then, than it was two nights ago, when I finished her book. After I read all of that, I contacted Ms. Smart on Facebook. I did not expect to hear from her and that was not the point of my contacting her. I wanted to tell her that one of the happiest days of my life, was when she was found alive. Why? Because I thought she was dead. I assumed it. I assumed it, because I thought her little sister's story was ridiculous, and I thought that Ed and Lois Smart were no better than John and Patsy Ramsey. Meaning, I assumed they killed their daughter and made up the whole story about the man in her bedroom. Then I heard she was alive. Then I saw a picture of that piece of filth, Brian David Mitchell and I knew what happened. I had just never heard the details before. I told Ms. Smart that I feared she would never be seen again, that I admired her courage for actually fighting to stay alive, JUST to make sure that her cousin Olivia(who looks a lot like her) was not Mitchell's next victim or fantasy 'bride'.Ms. Smart wrote me back, thanking me. She also sent me a poem. I am not into poetry, but this one spoke of blue seas and other pretty things, and I was not only touched, but happy that this young woman was able to forge a life for herself, after such a harrowing time in her young life. Now on to my review of 'My Story' by Elizabeth Smart.I gave this book five stars, because not only did she tell the Good(how her faith sustained her), the Bad(Brian David Mitchell and that loathesome accomplice of his, Wanda Barzee) and the Ugly(Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee) of her ordeal, but Elizabeth walks the reader through her time before she was abducted, to the night it happened and her trying ordeal for nine months. I now understand why she didn't run, why she couldn't escape. All anyone has to do, that can't understand that, is to think back to what it was like to be fourteen. When you're fourteen, you can't see the whole picture. If this had happened to Ms. Smart when she had been 20 or even 25, and she had been taken in a way, where in which one scream for help, might have halted being taken, chances are, she would've done it. And she would've taken the chance that Mitchell was crying wolf about killing everyone in her family, if she had made any escape attempts. But Elizabeth was not an adult. She was a child. A teen, but still at an age where an adult can tell a child anything, and they'll believe it, even if it belies common sense. Factor in being sexually assaulted daily, starved and let's face it, who feels up to doing anything when you haven't had a good shower or bath? Add all that up and this book is just a heart wrenching, God awful nightmare.I could not have survived what Elizabeth Smart did, at fourteen, and not be writing this review from some nut house now. I couldn't. But 'My Story', is an example of what the human spirit can survive when tested.

The first woman in the Dallas Fire Department, Sherrie's true stories are entertaining, shocking, and faith building. Determined to reach her goal of retirement with a full pension, Sherrie tells what it was like to be the first-and only woman-in a profession previously reserved exclusively for men. Told with raw emotion, Sherrie will open your eyes and your heart to the reality of pioneering the way for other women to serve in similar "man-worthy" jobs. Her lighthearted manner belies the "fire in the belly" perseverance required just to show up to work. Truly her character as well as her faith were on the line with her life every time the bell rang. Even more so, her faith and character were developed and tried through the unseen fire between bells in a firehouse filled with men eager to discourage her at every turn.

By Amazon Customer I feel that all female high school and college students should read this book to encourage them to follow their heart and dreams. Sherrie wrote an excellent book of her life story when she became the first Paramedic and Firefighter of the Dallas Fire Department in 1977. She had to prove herself over and over just because she was a female. I am very proud of her vivacious and strong courage that made her a trailblazer for the females and other minority's that joined after her. During the 1970's women and many others were discriminated in many white male dominated jobs but she proved herself by having a career spanning 35+ years! Great book!!!! Angie Fletcher Tackett

I was amazed at the similarity between many of your stories, and my own. And I loved the way you wove your message through all of the stories. I will definitely have Jeff read it, so that he can have a better understanding of who I am and why I am. The "info" parts for non-firefighters were woven so well, and the stories told so well, that I could see them happening. A great read for anyone, whether they are facing trials, or just want a better understanding of what it is like to be a firefighter and a ground breaking pioneer.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a remarkably inspiring story of a remarkable women ... By Rick Collins This is a remarkably inspiring story of a remarkable women who faced a uphill battle and won against the odds. Well worth the read! I have known Sherrie for many years, we went to school together. I thought Sherrie was a smart, driven and attractive, we were friends. As some high friends we lost touch after school and did not see each other very much except for reunions. Sherrie and I caught up again at our classmate's inauguration as the current Governor of Texas Greg Abbott. She told me about the book and it was about to come out. After the book came out I went to one of Sherrie's book signings and purchased a copy and I promised to read it. The book sat on the shelf for a couple of months in my study. Sherrie called and asked me to please read the book and review it. Well I bought the ebook (Kindle version) on Amazon and loaded on my iPad saying the next business trip it will be my reading material instead of my usual Tom Clancy book. On the flight back from NY I was tired of playing solitaire so I decided to give Sherrie's book, Faith on Fire a shot. I was hooked after the second page. Knowing Sherrie for a long time as I have I real knew nothing about her life after high school. This woman has grit and determination that is not equaled by many. Sherrie is an extraordinary women. Her book made me laugh and smile, it made me mad as hell and there was certain individual characters in the book i wanted to find and beat the HELL out of and it made me cry. Yes I said it I cried in a couple of spots in the book, like when her friend and mentor Capt died, so sad. Anyway I have talked enough, if you don't read this book you are missing a wonderful story about an extraordinary woman who face adversity every step of the way and succeeded beyond belief. Hell thinking about it this book is the "Rocky" of fire fighters.... it will make a great movie! it was better than my Clancy novel especially since Faith on Fire is a TRUE story. Thanks Sherrie for writing this book and letting me get to know you better. Love to you, Sam and your family!

"The Man That Stands Before You" is a first hand account of a life that seems like it jumped out of the pages of a modern day adventure or spy novel. There is no way someone has had this much excitement in their life and still retain the brain power to recant it all without missing a beat. Each chapter describes the details of separate events that have only their author in common with each other. So if I had to put a classification on it, which I hate doing, I guess you could call it biographical but it crosses many genres. It's funny, it explores some social issues and will teach you everything that you ever needed to know about the law and your rights. From the author Today I am not the man that I was twenty years ago or yesterday for that matter. But I did live these chapters and they made me into the man I am today. Kind of a mind screw if you think about it too much. Some of the more colorful titles are "The Meltdown at the Navy Yard," That one ought to ruffle some feathers, "No, She's not a Bimbo" I'll let you make the call on that and "The Stripper and the C.H.P"she never did meet the California Highway Patrol, at least not on my watch. The stories include an ironic account of bringing someone back from the dead, the distinction that I share with no other man on the planet (so far) and A real life, modern day gun fight in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. I have included some things that I am not proud of right along with some of my best days. The book is about the contrast of life but is mostly written with sort of a parable undertone. There is no picture of me on the jacket of this book because I look like everybody else and work around thousands of people everyday. My identity is not a secret I just wanted you to try to imagine what the man looks like that is capable of chaos. You just never know what the man standing in front of you is capable of. Read this book. If you hate it you could give it to someone you hate and in a sense remove some hate from your burden.

The Man That Stands Before You, by Neco

About the Author I'm more of a story teller than author so I'm hoping that the passion in which I verbally tell these stories is translated into these chapters This is my first book and I had a blast writing it. I am 45 years old, from San Diego living in WA and starting to worry about retirement. For the last 15 years, in one way or another I have worked for or with one of the branches of the military. I am a little on the demented side so my humor is dark and my outlook on life is even darker.

I've never had "the wool pulled over my eyes" so blatantly. This is a thin little booklet/pamphlet and is written as if it's a school report on Tony Robbins. Not at all what I expected ~ It's just a little synopsis of Tony Robbins' messages. Returning.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pass by this one By S. Morgan The thing I appreciate about Tony Robbins is that he is a very generous writer. I had only read one of his books previously, but it was packed with information he had found through extensive reading. The result was a thick book with small print. He gives you more than your money's worth, and his personal energy and enthusiasm are delightful. This writer (NOT apparently Tony Robbins; he is listed as Tony Rob) does not do the same. The book is short, the content is lightweight at best, the quality is poor, and frankly, it isn't worth your time. Tony Rob did not do a good job summarizing what you would get from actually reading a Tony Robbins book. Fortunately, I borrowed this with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, which means all I have to do now is return the thing. Although I am really grateful I didn't buy it, I also feel cheated and disappointed.Doesn't this book constitute a violation of one or more copyrights that belong to Tony Robbin? Amazon, why is this book even available on your website?

Excerpt from History of the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson, President of the United StatesLittle is now known to the general public of the history of the attempt to remove President Andrew Johnson in 1868, on his impeachment by the House of Representatives and trial by the Senate for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors in office, or of the causes that led to it. Yet it was one of the most important and critical events, involving possibly the gravest consequences, in the entire history of the country. The constitutional power to impeach and remove the President had lain dormant since the organization of the Government, and apparently had never been thought of as a means for the satisfaction of political enmities or for the punishment of alleged executive misdemeanors, even in the many heated controversies between the President and Congress that had theretofore arisen. Nor would any attempt at impeachment have been made at that time but for the great numerical disparity then existing between the respective representatives in Congress of the two political parties of the country.One-half the members of that Congress, both House and Senate, are now dead, and with them have also gone substantially the same proportion of the people at large, but many of the actors therein who have passed away, lived long enough to see, and were candid enough to admit, that the failure of the impeachment had brought no harm to the country, while the general judgment practically of all has come to be that a grave and threatening danger was thereby averted.A new generation is now in control of public affairs and the destinies of the Nation have fallen to new hands. New issues have developed and will continue to develop from time to time; and new dangers will arise, with increasing numbers and changing conditions, demanding in their turn the same careful scrutiny, wisdom and patriotism in adjustment. But the principles that underlie and constitute the basis of our political organism, are and will remain the same; and will never cease to demand constant vigilance for their perpetuation as the rock of safety upon which our federative system is founded. To those who in the study of the country's past seek a broader and higher conception of the duties of American citizenship, the facts pertaining to the controversy between the Executive and Congress as to the restoration and preservation of the Union, set out in the following pages, will be interesting and instructive. No one is better fitted than the author of this volume to discuss the period of reconstruction in which, as a member of the Federal senate, he played so potent and patriotic a part, and it is a pleasure to find that he has discharged his task with so much ability and care. But it is profoundly hoped that no coming generation will be called upon to utilize the experiences of the past in facing in their day, in field or forum, the dangers of disruption and anarchy, mortal strife and desolation, between those of one race, and blood, and rationality, that marked the history of America thirty years ago.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The mother-daughter connection is unlike any other, and while that special bond can often be filled with beauty and light, it can also take a dark turn and become abusive. A negative maternal experience is, sadly, very difficult for women to talk about.

In Juanita and the House of Mirrors: My Journey through the Mother-Daughter Phenomenon, author Joy Richardson shares her difficult upbringing and the complex and painful relationship she had with her mother as well as relaying some stories shared with her by other women detailing their own mother-daughter experience.

Insightful and rigorously honest, Richardson’s tales of her young life are grim accounts of abuse—both physical and mental—that convey the darkness of years spent in deep disconnection.

While they may be uncomfortable, these pages also offer power, healing, hope, and even a little humor to the lives of those who may be struggling to come to terms with an unfinished maternal relationship.

As I read certain chapters, I am reminded of similar situations but a different scenario in my childhood years. So proud of her to put this down on paper and hopefully she has had some reless of her pain and can now start embracing the Joy & Happiness that she so deserves!

There is nothing behind the mirror and its reflection. Those compelling images might just be shiny distractions - or a glimmer leading to hope. Joy would suggest that the choice is ours. Joy seems grounded in a fearless regard for sorting through her roots. I can almost hear her "committees" in conference with mine. I acknowledge - we are not our pain. We are the awareness of our pain. And then we might move on to life. Joy uses the door as a metaphor. A door is perfect for her process. Unlike a 12-step pathway, or a five year plan, a doorway is this simple - either one moves through it or not. This beautifully written book beckons me to remember my own darkness. "I could not seem to find the way between being numb with pain and not caring anymore." "...I would create problems where there were none." This is awareness speaking. From that awareness, we might heal. "We are all just walking each other home. - Ram Dass"I have not been friends with many writers, so it is especially touching for me to "hear" a writer, as I read, in a voice that is comforting and familiar.

Adventures in Ministry is one couple’s remarkable story of their thirty-five years working in the Catholic church.

In 1963, Cyril and Mary Jo Wuenschel loaded their six children—ranging from six years to ten months old—and most of their belongings into a Volkswagen Bus and left Pittsburgh for San Francisco. Cyril trained at The Institute of Lay Theology at the University of San Francisco with the hope that he would be assigned to a parish as a lay theologian and present a plan of adult education for the community.

They survived the trip West (barely) and found themselves in a drastically different world of graduate school and apartment living, on a very limited budget with six growing kids.

But their journey was just beginning. With the Second Vatican Council big changes were happening in the church, and soon the Wuenschels were working with the alterations in parishes all over the country.

Filled with the family’s love of music and the adventures that only a long life in ministry can bring, this remarkable book shares the experiences of lay people within the church and the important role they play.

La Dama de las Camelias (Spanish Edition), by Alejandro Dumas

From the Publisher The Lady of the Camellias, audio book dramatized in Spanish based on the original story of Alexander Dumas Fils. It is the story of a beautiful courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (Performed by Mayra Alejandra Rodriguez), who falls in love for a handsome young nobleman, Armand Duval (Performed by Arquimedes Rivero). Her love for Armand makes her decide to leave the comfortable lifestyle provided by a Duke. Their romance raises conflicts, and to prove her love, she sacrifices her own happiness. Based on a true story written by the son of the recognized author of adventures (The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, The Man with the Iron Mask, etc), this masterpiece in audio book format would make you live one of the most beautiful love stories ever told. (3 CDs - 3 Hours 20 Minutes)

M.B.M.[ENGLISH TRANSLATION]--Heavy syrup coats this novel of unrequited love. A young suitor remains undaunted by his hysterical heartthrob's debts, tuberculosis, and relationship with a jealous count. Golden-voiced actors take the roles in this radio theater drama, seasoned with sound effects like knocking on doors, eclectic music, and the chattering of people in the background. A clever vehicle for the reading of letters is to have the sender start reading and morphing the voice to become the recipient by the end. The transition from book to script creates confusing gaps, even though a deep, masculine voice adds changeovers between the scenes. The uncomplicated plot and vocabulary would entertain and enlighten students of Spanish as a second language. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Great reading, lousy story By Nathan Walker Like all of the Fonolibro audio books that I've listened to, 'La Dama de Las Camelias' has top notch narration and voice acting, and great production values. Unfortunately, unlike some of their other CD's, the story this is based on is excruciatingly boring. If you want to practice your Spanish and listen to a decent story in the process, I'd recommend 'Harry Potter Y La Piedra Filosofal' or Fonolibro's 'Viaje Al Centro de la Tierra,' and 'El Conde de Monte Cristo.'

Down-to-earth honesty, passion and insight from an unlikely source By Ham&CheeseOrchestra Hey now, don't get the wrong idea just because I am The World's Greatest Holly Mark(tm), I honestly didn't really have any expectations for Bob's book but bought it on principle anyway. As it turns out, this is one of the best books on wrestling ever written, and considering the other candidates (Foley, Jericho) that's saying a lot. Holly completely opens up and tells his story; punches are not pulled, which is exactly what you'd expect from a guy like him. "The Hardcore Truth" is completely free of any agendas (apart from the ones that are HUGELY justified in the book) or over-glorification of Holly.Even if you don't agree with some of his actions behind the scenes (I'm still not sure I do), he rationalizes them in a way that would make sense to me if I were a wrestler. To be honest, us fans on the internet aren't in a place to judge anybody; lots of stuff goes on backstage and whether we ever find out about it depends on whether there's a whistleblower. Bob posits the blame of his being made a scapegoat for stuff that occurs backstage all the time, on one Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and I for one have about as much reason to doubt that claim as I do the odds of the sun rising when tomorrow comes.By all accounts, Robert Howard the person is a passionate, friendly guy who was a far better worker than his acclaim (or lack thereof) would indicate, and he knew it, as did a whole lot of his colleagues. It's heartbreaking to see how many times he came up with ideas on how to use him right that were shot down due to carelessness, apathy, or politics. In the end, when you're talking about a guy with Holly's workrate and look, the blame is entirely on Creative not deciding to go in a direction that would recompense Holly for all his years of hard work, and earn the company some money at the same time. The chapters about Owen, Eddie and Benoit are heartbreaking reads. In fact, Holly's hypothesis as to how the latter would go on to do what he did is one of the most sensible and level-headed rationales you'll come across. Amidst all this are a bunch of hilarious road stories, between-chapter segments on different aspects of the business like travel, exercise and getting over, and a truly touching happy ending. I don't think you could ask for a less bitter retrospective (as disenfranchised retirees are wont to provide), because Bob seems content with his life now, even with pain that'll probably never stop. That's the price a man pays. WWE are definitely missing out on safeguarding the future of their company by not keeping Bob Holly around to teach rookies to respect the business and all that entails. My markdom aside, this was truly a great read, and I recommend it to any and all wrestling fans. It should by all rights sway the opinion of even his biggest detractors; if not, that's their loss.

Brutally Honest - MUST READ for WWE FANS By Gregory J Spitz Bob Holly tells his story & cuts right to the chase reading this book is like having a drink with an old friend & asking them what they were up to the last 15 years…..If the last 15 years was working for the WWE.The Hardcore Truth hold NOTHING back. Anything you think you could ask he details.Payouts for Pay Per Views – He gives you the exact figure he madeHis Honest Opinion of the tops stars of today & yesterday that he worked with & why he thinks that – He gives you that. The Wellness Policy – He shoots straightI rank this book up there with Mick Foley & Chris Jericho’s first books as well as Bret Harts it is a must read for not just wrestling fans but anyone who has ever thought about or tried to wrestle professionally.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Hardcore Truth or Some Guys Don't Get It? By R. T. Wilcoxon I haven't followed wrestling in some time - since the Monday Night Wars. But I still feel nostalgic for that time. I have read a number of the wrestling biographies out there (Hart's, Michel's, Foley's, Jericho's, Flair's, etc) but when I saw Hardcore Holly wrote a book I knew I had to read it. I wasn't necessarily a big Holly fan but I couldn't wait for this book for 2 reason...1) First, I had read a ton of books written by guys who were multimillionaires based on pro-wrestling...the books of the superstars of the sport. But what about a guy who was a midcard talent? That would be nteresting.2) The book wasn't put out by the WWE where Vince would review and strip out things and stories...this way we get the real truth...or we should have. For the most part Holly delivers. He tells many backstage stories I had never heard. And I believe he tells "his version" of the truth. But the book has some real flaws. Spoilers ahead:- I wanted to hear midcard wrestlers honest opinion...but Holly seems like he still want a job with McMann and goes out of his way to praise Vince, even if he stories paint a different picture. He repeatedly says how much he respects Vince, never had a problem with him, Vince was the boss that ran the show, etc. But then he tells tales of how Shawn Michels and Triple H basically ran the show, how "management" squashed his character, how he expected a phone or more respect when he left, etc. If Vince is the man Holly says he is and controls everything, then Vince and "management" are the same thing but Holly goes out of his way to kiss up to Vince.- Holly comes across as a whiner by the end of the book and he appears so completely unaware and at times unintelligent it becomes painful towards the end of the book. Here are some glaring examples:- Holly complains constantly that he isn't a bully and the internet just labelled him one because he worked stiff....but on a half dozen occasions in the book he tells in great detail how he bullied people. He beat up the guy on Tough Enough because they were laughing and having fun while training and he had the nerve to try to get up while Holly was beating on him, he and Chris Benoit beat down another Tough Enough winner Daniel Pudder because they didn't like him, he beat and chased Rene Dupree in and out of the ring, he and APA beat a couple of WCW wrestlers after Vince bought the company, he made Ken Kennedy change clothes in the hall, etc. He literally comes across as bragging about the wrestlers he bullied while complaining people called him a bully.- Holly complains nonstop about how good he was in the ring so the WWE should have given him more of a push...who the WWE pushes isn't some big secret - if a wrestler stands out physically (size, athletic ability) the WWE pushes them, Holly doesn't stand out - he isn't big, he isn't flashy, he isn't one of the highflying group. Next if a wrestler connects with audience both in the ring or on the mic, the WWE pushes you. Holly admits he wasn't great on the mic and his character of a tough Alabama redneck didn't connect with audience since the WWE's biggest wrestler was a tough Texas redneck. It would be one thing if Holly just mentions once or twice but he whines about it constantly.- Holly admits he doesn't drink but did use steroids. He goes on to say that steroids are better for you than alcohol. His proof? Well you hear about more people dying of the effects of alcohol than you do steroids....never mind the fact more people consume alcohol so naturally the negative effects occur more often. His other proof? Reality tv shows like Cops have drunk people on them all the time. But Holly doesn't stop there, he goes on to rewrite what happened to Chris Benoit..he stays he doesn't believe the steroid abuse or concussion syndrome stories created by medical professionals instead he believes Chris got drunk and killed his wife and then killed his son the next day because he didn't want his son growing up knowing he father killed his mother...Holly's proof? He has none except his desire to justify his steroid use.Despite the flaws the book is decent and worth a read.
