In Mark Nickerson's second book, Behind the Blue Lights, in addition to his usual hilarious stories of life as a Maine State Trooper, Mark delves deeper into the reasons people become law enforcement officers, and offers some poignant insight into the difficulties of life behind the blue lights. It's not all fun and games being a cop, and in this book Mark shows us both the humor and heartbreak behind the badge. As an added bonus, Mark has included stories from the archives of the Maine State Police, some heartwarming stories from another Maine State Trooper and the son of a Howland police chief who explain how the Maine State Police made a big impression on their lives as children.

Trooper Nickerson and myself lived those times and we both loved what we did and the people we served. These short stories are some of those events, and they definitely were the best.

I enjoy his style of story telling and also like the special connection he had with retired Maine Game Warden John Ford. I hope there are more stories to come.

I was hoping for this second act. I was not disappointed. I love this genre. Behind the Blue Lights is a great read. Great short stories of State Trooper duty in mostly rural, sometimes remote, areas. Well crafted material. Funny stories. With so much doom and gloom in the world it's nice to read something that finds the lighter human side of a stressful job. Well done. Highly recommended.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Against All Odds By Rebekah Hamilton This book is written with such searing honesty and grit. Cassie's story of determined action in the face of overwhelming adversity will haunt you for a long, long time. "Where Are My Children?" is not just another tale of a bad spouse and faulty courts in a foreign country; this is the saga of one mother's extraordinary love and bravery, and the lonely, perilous odyssey she undertook. This book will truly change you.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Intense plot & vivid detail drew me in By D. Ellis Phelps "...if we succeed, it means you'll have to go underground. You'll have to leave town, change your name, and start all over again somewhere else....Can you do all that?"Could I? As I read, each page revealing the unthinkable, revealing another obstacle and what this woman would have to do to retrieve her children, I asked myself over and over again: do I have this much courage? The writer implies with every word how deeply she herself had to dig for this kind of fortitude. This read is like watching a literary version of Dragnet. I could hear that "ta-ta-dum" lick as I read each new dated entry; I could see everything in vivid detail; hear background noise; feel the tension rise and release, rise and release with each obstacle overcome. If I could have stayed awake all night, I would have read this book in one sitting and that is rare for me, but the plot's intensity drew me all the way in with the fact that the story is true making it even more interesting. This author is adept at enculturating the reader to Bolivian customs, food, attitude and landscape. Her fluid descriptions woven masterfully throughout the action place the reader directly inside the scene, helping the reader become participant more than observer:"...Bolivia was a land of contrasts. La Paz was on the flat high plains between the eastern and western ranges of the Andes mountains....two miles above sea level and chilly year round. But you could hop in your car and in two hours be in the steamy Zongo Valley, where oranges grew wild and parrots squawked in the trees....I had never seen so many Mercedes Benz automobiles in one place, yet the vast majority of people had no car at all and got around on crowded, smelly buses. Beautiful mansions surrounded by well-manicured gardens could be found on the same street as mud shacks with half-naked children playing in the doorways."This is not a nostalgic read. These are facts beautifully written in an engaging, straight-forward, almost journalistic style. Think travel adventure. Think thriller.Think: "What would I do?" Then read this book to find out what you might HAVE to do.Then, try to sleep well knowing this could happen to you.

He tried to poison the children against their mother. For a long time, she had no contact with them at all. She knew where they were, but complicated international laws prevented her from bringing them home.Cassie explored different options for months. She ended up gathering thousands of dollars to hire a private investigator, and flew to Bolivia to kidnap the children back.Cassie does a masterful recounting of the Latin American country she lived in: the living conditions, markets, and culture.Even though Cassie’s ex-husband had broken laws to kidnap her children, the authorities held her to the letter of the law when she tried to recover them. The US Government did little to assist her, not wanting to offend the Bolivians.Where Are My Children? is a fascinating page-turner. Live through the excitement, fear, and suspense that this woman experienced with her children. You’ll find your heart pounding! Well worth the reading time!

Lo he leído 8 veces. La primera vez cuando tenía 12 años. Ahora tengo 20, y cada vez me gusta más. Absolutamente recomendable, acción, romance, el poder del dinero, sarcasmo y perdón. Para toda edad

A multi-platinum rock star’s life meets an unexpected detour when a bump on the head reveals itself to be a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Told with honesty and humor, LAME BRAIN is Rick Roberts’ story of his entangled afflictions of TBI and Alcoholism. Approximately 1.7 million people experience a TBI in the United States every year, with accidental falls being the leading cause. TBI can strike anyone at any time, swiftly changing the course of life. For Rick, this meant losing his ability to walk (with doctors giving only a 50/50 chance that he would ever walk again), losing many of his innate guitar skills, and facing difficult decisions that he wasn’t quite ready to make. Rick openly shares the story of how he confronted these challenges while simultaneously fighting alcoholism. True to his talent for writing award winning lyrics and melodies, Rick now gives the world a story of healing told in his own compelling voice. He details the routines he created to reclaim his mobility, coordination, and sobriety. Refusing to accept his circumstances as a game ender, he instead considers them to be merely setbacks. Within the pages of LAME BRAIN: MY JOURNEY BACK TO REAL LIFE, readers will find inspiration to achieve their own miracles and increased awareness of TBI and alcoholism. After an accidental fall leaves Rick Roberts, multi-platinum rock star, with a small bump on his head he is stunned weeks later to experience a complete loss of mobility. When his doctors tell him that he has a 50/50 chance of ever walking again, he discovers how vital the brain is to coordinating all of our everyday movements. In this inspirational true story Rick shares his journey of recovery from TBI and alcoholism, leaning into his own determination, physical therapy, and tough choices. This inspirational memoir about recovery from TBI and alcoholism tells all.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Tale Of Strength and Recovery By Michael L. Pasqua I have been of Rick Roberts going back to Flying Burrito Brothers through solo work and, later, Firefall. Because of this, I was interested in this book. Having finished it, I can honestly say that he pulls no punches and goes into great detail about his problems with alcohol and the injury that almost ended his music career (fortunately, he's back with a great new band). The ability to recover from both of these is a testament to his strength of character and his ability to self-reflect on those things that lead him down the initial path. One thing that Rick spends a good deal of time is the support of his wife, Mary, to help him on his journey back. Too often, we hear stories of music casualties but this story provides a positive outcome to a tale that is too often told. I strongly recommend it to even the casual reader, as well as the die-hard fan.

That's cred.Though this story would never be embraced by MADD or codependent women's groups,I found it fascinating because I've always loved Rick, since the early 70s, into the 80s, then....what happened?!I met Rick at the Louisville Street Faire summer of 11, after he performed on stage with Firefall. I'd wished it all day, that Rick Roberts would mysteriously reappear. I was in front row, and then I saw him on the stairs to the stage. I got it on my iPhone.I was the one in the audience who recorded him on stage with Jock at the benefit, mentioned in this book.Yeah, I'm invested! Thanks for writing this book, Rick Roberts!Very cathartic, btw

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An amazing and honest tale of one of our music heroes ... By Jane Words from his heart. This is not a slick, overly edited version of someone else's perspective of a subject's life. Rick Roberts recounts some of the most difficult moments during his physical and emotional recovery from various physical injuries and alcoholism. And he does it with warmth and positive words all can find encouraging for whatever is going on in their own lives. An amazing and honest tale of one of our music heroes and it ends with a hopeful beginning. I found it difficult to put down until I read the last word on the last page.

El estudio de la historia de la Revolución Francesa y el Imperio Napoleónico no estarían completos sin conocer a este camaleónico personaje. El autor imprime un buen ritmo a la narrativa, de fácil lectura. Altamente recomendado.

Beyond the Horizon is a 1920 play written by American playwright Eugene O'Neill. It was O'Neill's first full-length work, and the winner of the 1920 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play focuses on the portrait of a family, and particularly two brothers Andrew and Robert. In the first act of the play, Robert is about to go off to sea with their uncle Dick, a sea captain while Andrew looks forward to marrying his sweetheart Ruth and working on the family farm as he starts a family. "...an absorbing, significant, and memorable tragedy... ...a playwright of real power and imagination... ...the play has greatness in it and marks O'Neill as one of our foremost playwrights..."Alexander Woolcott, Times "Only once or twice in the course of the dramatic season does a play of such terrific force and such simple directness award the patient theatrical chroniclers..."Robert Gilbert Welsh, Evening Telegram "...this season's most notable play of a serious theme and purpose by an American author..."World.

Beyond the Horizon, by Eugene O'Neill

From the Back Cover Widely regarded as America's greatest dramatist, Eugene O'Neill introduced innovative dramatic techniques, probed the inner psychological states of his characters and used language and symbolism to create plays of remarkable depth and power.Originally presented in 1920, Beyond the Horizon (O'Neill's first full-length drama) won him a Pulitzer Prize. In it, the Mayo brothers—having fallen in love with the same woman—head down diverging paths in life. Robert Mayo, who had dreamed of adventure "beyond the horizon," remains behind to work the family farm and marry the lady in question. His brother Andrew goes to sea and eventually to South America. Unsuited to lead a nomadic existence, he returns—a broken and financially ruined man—to find his brother also a failure. In the end and nearing death, Robert realizes the release he sought from financial burdens and unhappiness lies just "beyond the horizon."This revolutionary work of tragic realism established the reputation of a playwright who, after Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw, became one of the most widely translated and produced dramatists of the 20th century, and one of the most vital forces in the American theater.Unabridged Dover (1996) republication of a standard edition.

About the Author Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953), one of America's greatest playwrights, was the author of "Beyond the Horizon, Desire Under the Elms, "and "Long Day's Journey into Night. "

A brilliantly emotional tragedy By A Customer Beyond the Horizon was O'Neill's first major full-length play and its release is considered a significant turning point in the history of American theater. Its main characters are two twentysomething brothers, Rob and Andy, who have both spent their lives on the family farm and have quite opposite dispositions: Andy is excruciatingly practical and hopes for little more in life than to take over the farm and make it successful; whereas Rob is something of a bookish dreamer who hopes to see what life is like "beyond the horizon." He gets this opportunity when his uncle invites him to come along on a three year trip to South America and Asia, but the night before their departure, a woman with whom both Rob and Andy are in love professes her love for Rob, causing Rob to stay behind to marry her while Andy, unable to bear the idea of living alongside the new couple, takes Rob's place on the trip. The bulk of the play deals with the long-term consequences of this one night in which the brothers ignored their callings in life. As is often the case in O'Neill's plays, the premise is fairly simple and unoriginal and the development of the plot is relatively predictable, but the intensity with which the characters are developed is excellent and truly memorable. We see in Rob the same sort of futile hope that O'Neill would develop so well some years later in The Iceman Cometh, and the despair of the other characters is quite moving. At times, the pathos in the play can almost be over-the-top (and I imagine that in live performances this might be something that the actors have to be all the more careful to avoid), but O'Neill manages to avoid going into the realm of melodrama and create very real, touching characters. O'Neill would, of course, go on to write many other deeply emotional plays, a number of which are still better known than this one. Beyond the Horizon shows us many of the talents for which O'Neill is now universally recognized, and the almost-universal acclaim that it received upon its 1920 premiere seems equally apt today.

Cloyce Smith The first O'Neill play performed on Broadway (in 1920), "Beyond the Horizon" is actually the fifth full-length drama in O'Neill's career as a playwright. ("Bread and Butter,""Servitude," "The Personal Equation," and "Now I Ask You" all were completed before 1916, although none of them were performed during O'Neill's lifetime.)A commercial success and winner of a Pulitzer Prize (the first of four for O'Neill), "Beyond the Horizon" is somewhat jarring to the modern ear in both theatric arrangement and thematic development; it shows a still-green O'Neill struggling to convey his characters' emotional depth and psychological torments in the not-quite-convincing framework of a melodramatic plot. The problems start in the very first act, when Robert Mayo, a youth inclined to poetry and a life of idleness, is preparing to leave for an apprenticeship at sea with his uncle. In the matter of a few pages, Robert confesses his love for his brother Andrew's childhood sweetheart, Ruth; he casts aside the plans for his voyage and decides to live as a farmer--an occupation he despises; the love-struck couple agree to be married forthwith; and Andrew, in bitterness, assumes Robert's position on the ship and leaves the very next morning for a journey of several years. All in a evening's work. This abbreviated soap opera suffers from a lack of any attempt at dramatic preparation or character development; Ruth, in particular, pretty much walks onto the stage and ecstatically accepts Robert's out-of-the-blue marriage proposal. As O'Neill was to learn later in his career, it takes a much longer play to set up this sort of scenario.Fortunately, the rest of the play is much better; it focuses on the deterioration of Robert and Ruth's hasty marriage, with Ruth regretting her decision and pining for Andrew's infrequent visits. In these two acts, O'Neill avoids impulsive, life-changing choices and more effectively shows slice-of-life scenes: Ruth's fights with her mother and her indolent husband, Andrew's exultant although brief return, the near-bankruptcy of the farm, and Robert's declining health. Although the play closes with a sentimentality bordering on bathos, these two acts herald the first triumph of one of America's great dramatists.

BtH was his first long play that was produced for the stage, and it won him his first Pulitzer. (His was only the 2nd Pulitzer Prize for drama ever awarded. If one looks through the history of award winners, the competition does not seem to have been overwhelmingly strong.) He had a series of one-act plays staged before, but his longer plays had so far remained unpublished and un-staged. His one- act plays had not been truly remarkable. 'Beyond the Horizon' made it to Broadway. Two brothers are in love with the same girl. One heart must be broken. The girl is quite clear that she roots for the younger brother, the one who dreams about things beyond the horizon and who wants to go on a long sailing turn with his uncle Dick, captain of the Sunda, bound for Japan and possibly other exciting places. That causes a huge problem for the young man: stay home with the girl, but without a clear future, or live his old dream? The older brother is the homely one, his dream is to run the farm of his father, and marry the girl.Things go differently. The young men switch their position, the younger one stays and gets married, the older one goes on board. But romantic love turns sour quickly. The dreamer can't run the farm. The girl turns into a nagging wife, imitating her mother. Hopes then turn to the older brother, whose return will fix things... He, in turn, has made a success of his sea-going, but his heart was not in it. He has forgotten the girl though. The story is about choices, and consequences, and regrets. There are the usual O'Neill conflicts: husband/wife, father/son. The mood is strongly defeatist and the farm goes down badly. The play's strength is the twist of action versus anticipations in the first two acts, but from there on it becomes a little too predictable and dreary in the 3rd.(As I read the play in the LoA, I can't judge this edition. From experience with other texts in the series I know that it should be the last resort for any text. Take it only if you find no other way to get access!)

Instead, I clung tighter to my nearly soaked cloche to hold it in place against the icy rain that slanted sideways across Pennsylvania Avenue. Navigating the slick pavement carefully, I swam through the midafternoon crowd, mostly women and a few men too old or broken for service, who were waiting in line at the Red Cross canteen truck for coffee, or making their way between government buildings and the makeshift tent offices that lined the Mall.Brushing the raindrops from my overcoat, I slid under the awning that shielded the security booth outside the Department of State Building, pausing to fumble for my press pass. The guard eyed me incredulously as he scrutinized my credentials. Ignoring him, I gazed up at the White House, pale against the stormy gray clouds. Something moved on the roof above, the swivel of an anti-aircraft gun pointed upward. My heart skipped. Washington was a city occupied not just by the thousands who had come here to work, but by the army that defended it as though the Germans might at any moment descend from the sky.Lowering my eyes, I caught a wistful glimpse of my disheveled reflection in the window of the guard booth. I'd left the rooming house in good form to a sky that, if not sunny, had certainly not suggested this downpour. Arriving at the Post, I expected a day like most I'd had these past few months, typing stories from shorthand notes on a Remington at a desk barely wide enough to hold it, pressed close to a dozen other girls. I didn't mind; I needed work and I was grateful that my high school secretarial course had qualified me for it. Though it would have paid a few dollars more, I had dreaded the prospect of working as one of the government girls at the War Department. I couldn't bear to endlessly type letters telling families that their sons were not coming home, seeing Charlie's face in each of them.During my first few months at the news bureau, the work had been quiet and predictable. But one afternoon nearly two weeks ago, a man with his sleeves rolled up had opened the door to the steno pool. "Italian?" he bellowed. A cloud of cigarette smoke appeared before him as he exhaled, making him seem a gray-haired dragon. The room fell silent. Chip Steeves, managing editor of the Washington Post, never came into the typing room. "My secretary is out and I need someone to call a translator." Impulsively, I raised my hand. Then I looked around. I was the only one and I started to lower it.But Mr. Steeves was already weaving his way through the desks, descending upon me. "You can find me someone to translate Italian?" He spoke through the cigar stub clenched between his teeth."No." I looked at him squarely. "I can do it myself."He eyed me for several seconds, his face a scowl. "Well, come on," he barked impatiently, as though I, and not he, had hesitated. I could feel the eyes of the other typists on me as I walked from the room."Montforte, isn't it?" he asked, surprising me as we entered his office. The desk was covered in piles of papers, the floor littered with dirty coffee cups."Yes." I cleared my throat. "Addie, that is Adelia."He didn't introduce himself; he didn't need to. Chip Steeves was legendary as journalist and terror. "You're the girl who caught that mistake in the U-boat story." I straightened slightly. My job was only to type articles, not proofread them. I had seen an error in one of the stories, though, a date that I knew from my own reading was wrong. I had pointed it out to Mr. Steeves's secretary, who oversaw the typists. But I did not know that the message had been passed on—or that I had received credit. "That was good work. You speak Italian?""Yes. I was born in Trieste." Being foreign-born was not something that one announced loudly these days, and I'd worked hard to remove all trace of an accent. This might be the first time it was an asset. He thrust out a pen as if he might hit me with it, and I fought the urge to cower. "Well, translate this, Adelia Montforte." I took the paper he offered and moved an overflowing ashtray from the nearest chair, then perched on it and scrawled the translation hurriedly. It was a cable about a skirmish that had taken place near Salerno, brief but with a few military terms I wasn't quite sure I'd gotten right. When I finished, I handed it back to Mr. Steeves, who scanned the page. "This is good.""I could do better with more time," I offered."Couldn't we all? But you don't botch the feel of it, like the real translators do."After that, Mr. Steeves sent more translation work my way through his secretary. But he had not reappeared himself—until this morning. "Montforte," he hollered as he stuck his head into the steno pool, causing me to jump. I'd leapt up and grabbed my pen and pad, assuming it was another translation job. But when I started for the door of his office, he waved me away. "Be at the State Department this afternoon at three."I stared at him blankly. "Me? But why?" He tossed me a press pass and disappeared into his office. The guard handed back my pass now, along with a visitor's badge, which I pinned to the collar of my blouse. I stepped uncertainly into the massive lobby of the State Building, marveling at the high chandelier, better suited to a ballroom. But before I could take it all in, Mr. Steeves appeared, grabbing me by the arm. He led me unceremoniously past a marble staircase, down a corridor and into a room with a long oak conference table. "The deputy secretary has called a meeting with the press to talk about our coverage of our allies, making sure it doesn't hurt the war effort, that sort of thing.""I don't understand. Isn't there something you need me to translate?"He shook his head. "Nah, kid. My cub reporter's been called up so I need someone to help me cover the meeting. You were the best one for the job.""The best one? I'm a typist. I can't possibly cover a story.""Just take one of the chairs against the wall and take notes. And don't say anything," he instructed, then disappeared into a group of uniformed men clustered in the corner.I took off my overcoat and folded it in the lap of my navy blue skirt, noticing as I sat down a run in my nylons. Then I tried to smooth the wrinkles from my pleated-front blouse. I was the only woman in the room, except for the one setting out coffee cups. The war might have brought women to work, Rosie the Riveter and all that, but in high-level Washington meetings like this, the seats at the table were still reserved for the men.The door opened and a man I recognized from the papers as Undersecretary of State Edward Stettinius came in. "Be seated," he said, as the others came to the table. "I've only got a few minutes so I'll be brief. I've called you here to ask for your help in talking to the American people about the war." He launched into a discussion of a new initiative by the Office of War Information to work with the press on the way it would communicate information about the fighting.I scribbled furiously. Though I frequently typed the shorthand notes of others, I had seldom taken dictation and I feared I would not be able to keep up with Secretary Stettinius's rapid English. But as I listened, I became absorbed by what he was saying. The relationship between newspapers and government had always seemed adversarial, one seeking information and the other holding it back. But he was speaking now of ways they could work together. "I'm happy to take your questions," he concluded a few minutes later.A correspondent from the Washington Star whom I did not recognize raised his hand, then spoke without waiting. "It sounds good on the surface—but isn't it something of a conflict of interest?" I had been wondering the same thing: Could the newspapers still maintain their independence and integrity while working with the government?Secretary Stettinius offered a vague explanation of how it would all work without compromising the independence of the press."Surely you aren't suggesting we show you our stories before they go to press?" another reporter pressed. "That would be censorship.""No, of course not," Secretary Stettinius replied, looking tugging at his collar. "We simply want to be a resource." Across the room, Mr. Steeves folded his arms, unconvinced. "My deputy will be in touch with each of you individually to discuss specifics," Secretary Stettinius promised, cutting the questions short. He rose, signaling that the meeting was over.As the newsmen stood and chatted among themselves, I tried to catch Mr. Steeves's eye, but he was engrossed in conversation with a foreign correspondent. I made my way toward the door of the too-stuffy room, uncertain whether to wait for him or return to the bureau. As I neared the massive foyer, a door across the hallway opened, letting loose a low din of chatter from another meeting. I started past. "Then we are agreed," a voice broke through the others, unexpectedly familiar. I stopped mid-step. "We'll meet again when we have the plans drawn up."Charlie! My head swiveled in the direction from which the voice had come. It couldn't be. I craned my neck, trying once more to hear the voice. I had imagined him so many times since coming here, seen him in every uniformed soldier on the street corners. But I'd never heard his voice.I stepped toward the door of the other room, not caring that I had no business being there as I scanned the crowd. "Oh!" I cried so loudly that a man in front of me turned to stare. I brought my hand to my mouth as Charlie's broad shoulders appeared above the others. Joy surged through me, making my head light. It really was him. But how? There was no reason on earth for him to be in Washington. He was meant to be off training somewhere or deployed, not standing in front of me, tall and glorious. Had he come for me? No, there was simply no way he could have known I was here—which was exactly how I had wanted it.Anxiety rose, eclipsing my happiness, and the walls of the immense room seemed to grow close. I started to duck away, the idea of facing Charlie unfathomable. But even as I took a step toward the door, I turned back, drawn to him. He looked different to be sure, aged by all that had happened, with lines in places I hadn't remembered and a permanent sadness about the eyes. His brown hair was cut short and it was thinner, too, without the thick, rich curls he had once had. He was still beautiful, though. My breath caught. That did not, could not, change what had happened. I had to leave. Now.I stepped back toward the corridor, my ankle turning inward and causing me to stumble. As I struggled not to fall, I dropped my notebook, which clattered against the marble. Heads turned in my direction, seeming more annoyed than concerned. As the others resumed their conversations, Charlie stepped from the group and moved toward me in the hall, his face breaking. "Addie?" His tone was disbelieving. I froze, unable to move or speak as he drew close. He reached out, as if to touch me, but his hand foundered midair before falling to his side again. He leaned in to kiss my cheek and his familiar scent made the room wobble. I struggled not to turn and meet his lips with my own. "Addie." There it was in that single word, that voice which cut right through and connected with my insides as it had since the first time I heard it. "What are you doing here?" He didn't know any of it—that I had left Philadelphia, or how I had come to be here. Because he had gone first."I'm working for the Post." I watched his face for any sign of disbelief. But Charlie had never doubted me. "I never expected you to be in Washington," I added. His face flinched slightly as though he had been slapped. "You aren't pleased to see me.""Of course I am. It's just that I thought you were training." My words came out too quickly, piling on top of one another. He fumbled with the hat, neatly folded in his hands. "I was, for almost a year. But now I'm here for some extra briefings." There was a strange undercurrent to his voice. A year had slipped through our fingers. How was that possible? Once it had seemed unthinkable to keep breathing without Charlie, but somehow the clock had kept ticking. I tried to imagine his days in between, all of the things he had done and seen since we'd last laid eyes on one another. But my mind was blank."Your hair," he blurted. I raised my hand to my temple, wincing at how tousled I was from the rain. "It's short." It was the bob, so different than last time he had seen me. "I mean, I like it." I couldn't tell if he was just being kind."How's your family?""Holding up as well as can be expected." He shrugged, helpless but not indifferent. "My folks are in Florida. Mom has thrown herself into the women's auxiliary." It sounded so much like Mrs. Connally that I had to smile. "Dad's Dad." Guilt at having left them flickered across his face. "It tore them apart, you know." Yes, I knew only too well. The Connallys lived in a place where their grief would always be as raw as the day it all happened, no matter how much time passed or how far away they moved. "They're together, but in a separate kind of a way. They know now," he added, and I wanted to ask if he meant about the army, or what had been between us, or both. The question stuck in my throat. "And the boys?" I asked instead."Jack, well, he works at a plant in Port Richmond. He's taking night classes at Temple, though." Jack had been the real brain of the boys—he might have gone to an Ivy League school and practiced medicine as he once dreamed, but for money and circumstance. "He hasn't been called up yet, thank God. Mom couldn't bear to lose another son."I swallowed. "And Liam?"Charlie stared hard at the floor. "I'm not sure." But surely his parents knew about Liam's whereabouts, and whether or not he was okay. Or had they cut ties with him as well? My stomach tugged. I still hated Liam for what he had done, yet I could not help but worry.

I am particularly picky about historical fiction. The writer has to know her subject area and I can see right through it if they don't. Pam Jenoff is incredible. She's a brilliant writer, for sure, but she's excellent at getting the historical context RIGHT. I have read a lot of books on World War two and this one felt authentic. You have a young woman, Adelia who has to leave Italy. It's fascist. It's dangerous. She heads to America, falls in love, but the disaster in Italy follows her to America as the whole world is plunged into World War II. It's about what an immigrant's journey looks like. It's about running from war, and yourself, and it's about falling in love. It's about heartbreak, trying to find peace, build again in a disaster, and working as a woman in that time period. It's about what war does to everyone and how the whole world was effected by World War II. And yet, it wasn't depressing. I love to read about history, I love to learn, and I love a little romance in my books. This one was perfect.

Griffith This review is based on a pre-publication copy of "The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach" by Pam Jenoff. Your impressions may well be different than mine. That said, "The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach" follows a current fad of novels written in first person narrative with regular time shifts. Of the nearly dozen books I've read in the past 3-4 months, nearly all have been written in this style, and as a reader, I've come to the conclusion it takes a great deal of skill both in writing and editing to make it work. I won't fault the author for problems with those shifts in time throughout this novel. Several editors go over the final manuscript before the book is released and problems should be caught there. We're introduced to Adelia Monteforte in the prologue as she's driving to a beach house on the shore with a great deal of trepidation. It's a place from her past, and she's nervous about returning to it. Chapter one shifts to eleven months earlier in Washington D.C. when Adelia runs into a former love interest, Charlie Connally. She's working for The Washington Post. It's an awkward and uncomfortable surprise to see Charlie. There's a troubled history between them which is yet to be revealed. But Chapter two shifts to two years earlier, when Adelia arrives on a boat from Italy shortly before her 17th birthday. An only child, her mother unexpectedly put her on the ship to get her out of facist Italy and into the safety of her Aunt Bess and Uncle Meyer's home in America. Almost immediately after she arrives, Aunt Bess takes Adelia to an apartment on the shore for a quiet summer. There she meets the Connally family, a boisterous group with four sons. Charlie is the oldest. Adelia is immediately attracted to him. There are also the twins, Jack, a gentle, bookish adolescent, and Liam, who is prickly. Finally, there's young Robbie. The next several chapters generally relate to this time period, but there are awkward shifts within chapters (or even pages) when Adelia is reminiscing about earlier events. The big questions I had (as a reader) were why her aunt and uncle--among other characters--weren't more fully developed, and why Adelia didn't think about home (Italy) very much... not just her parents and grandmother, but school friends, teachers, neighbors? Normal childhood memories. It's as if none of it ever existed. Instead she's absorbed into the Connally family, and much of the focus is on her infatuation with Charlie, who seems not to notice her. At least initially. No spoilers here, but by Chapter ten, the novel has backtracked a bit before placing Adelia in England during World War II. She's working as an assistant to a high level journalist in war torn London. There are shifts back in time to her brief romance with Charlie, the tragedy that strikes the Connally family, her impulsive move to Washington D.C., and the circumstances leading to her abrupt job change. In London, she befriends Claire Churchill, the PM's niece. At this point the novel is steadily paced, but as a reader I just don't like Adelia. When Charlie comes back on the scene a key element is that they were childhood friends and grew up together in the U.S., but Adelia was nearly 17 when she arrived, met Charlie and became involved with the Connallys. She grew up in Italy. Any good editor should have caught that.If it all sounds confusing, it's because I found it a very confusing read. This will not be a popular rating, I'm sure, but I've got to give the novel 2.5 stars. I'm rounding up instead of down, because the concept was good, and the author clearly did her research. There were just too many problems for me. Of course, top selling authors highly rated "The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach", so you might find it brilliant.

Another fantastic WWII hit for Pam Jenoff By Debbie Haupt-The Reading Frenzy Pam Jenoff brings a heart-wrenching tale of loss and forgiveness, first loves and second chances. Her story shifts between Europe and the US during the World War II years. Her narrative is haunting and eloquent bringing to life her fresh, unforgettable, and a few unconventional characters, her devastatingly amazing depiction of war torn Europe and a family ripped apart by unthinkable tragedy. This reader especially loves the realness and the perseverance and forever-hopeful optimism she gives her characters.I love traveling with Pam through her stories, timelines and worlds and I’m packed and ready for the next journey. In the summer of 1941 16yr old Adelia Montforte’s parents send her to live with her aunt and uncle in Philadelphia to escape the rising turmoil in Italy. Assimilating into a prejudicial population already on edge is not easy for an olive skinned Jewish girl especially one with an Italian accent. Luckily she’s been befriended by the boisterous Irish-American-Catholic Connally family that includes four brothers, the oldest three around her own age. Her first summer in America is full of sun and fun spent with this seemingly idyllic family that fills many voids for Addie from familial to confusing when she becomes enamored with the oldest boy Charlie. Then unexpected tragedy strikes that once again upends Addie’s world and sends her on a long perilous journey that’s equal parts escaping and self discovering.

Recovering from a drug addiction is a tremendous feat. Overcoming a drug habit and starting an innovative dependency program for prisoners within the San Mateo County, California, judicial system is nothing short of miraculous.

Shirley LaMarr has accomplished these things and more in her sixty-seven years of life. The cofounder of the Choices program, as well as the founder of Mz. Shirlez Transitional Housing Centre, she might appear to be just another pleasant woman on her way to a church social, but more than likely, she’s on her way to jail to help the inmates.

Not Without Scars: The Story of Shirley LaMarr is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey from a life of drug addiction, living on the streets, crime, and prostitution to establishing a life-changing drug program that helps addicts become contributing members of society.

In the vein of Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff, Not Without Scars goes far beyond the usual redemption story. The details of her early life are nothing short of shocking. By all rights she should be dead. But the profoundly uplifting and inspirational second half of her life is marked by an intense mission to help others.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Brad Mayo This is a great book and has a lot of good information on how to lose weight fast. I believe that using the strategies in this book it could be the fastest way to lose weight. I have already lost weight within a few days since I got this book. Definitely recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. English does not seem like the authors first language By Douglas A. Butts I was expecting some sort of guide to use HIIT with sprints for weight loss, but this book provides nothing of the sort. Also, English does not seem like the authors first language, and I think it would have benefitted from having someone edit it first.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Difficult to read with so many errors. By Amazon Customer The information is good, but the Kindle book is in desperate need of proofreading and editing. Try some sourcing, too. It would do wonders for credibility.
