Tami Gilbert was born in Ijofin, in Nigeria. When she was eight, her father left for Chicago, and her mother moved back to Benin, where she remarried. Tami was left in the care of other relatives until her father sent for her at fifteen. While her introduction to America was rocky – she stayed in a cousin’s cold basement for a while, and was bullied at school – she worked hard and got a nursing degree, overcame racism and difficult employers to succeed in her field, and found love and family with a supportive husband and three children.Gilbert’s story is inspiring, and her experiences are both interesting to read about and useful to learn from. She tells her story with kindness and warmth, and has loving words to say about a great many of the people in her life. Gilbert offers specific examples to support her arguments, and helpfully provides tools in each chapter designed to help teach the lessons she offers. However, the book could benefit from greater depth and substance – her life story is presented here in a very short, summary form, but is certainly worthy of much more exploration and greater detail than she offers. Definitely worth reading By Rich This is a beautiful memoir of a woman who had the courage to build a meaningful life for herself after coming to our country from Nigeria as a teen with no resources. It is interesting, enlightening and inspirational. Everyone can benefit from reading this book.

A Woman Who Will Not Be Defeated By Joyce Hirsch I was enthralled and inspired by Tami's story. .It was heartbreaking to read about her mother abandoning her at birth and then her father bringing her to the United States only to abandons her again to leave Tami and her sister are sleeping on a cold concrete floor in a basement. At this time Tami is 15 years old of fifteen, she makes a commitment to herself that hard work and education are the only way to succeed in the world. She encounters racism and corporate bigotry and rises above every issue to succeed at work and life. She is smart, competent, tough as well as loving. She is motivated by adversity and rises to meet each and every challenge. She is a role model of resourcefulness and strength rising above stereotypes.Today Tami has a respected position at a fine hospital and is happily married with three children.

The Europeans seems indeed to be merely "a sketch", a practice piece, worth reading only for James's masterly prose and for occasional sparkles of wit. Or perhaps it should be taken as James's effort to 'cash in' on the perennial market for romance novels for women readers, a market that was a lucrative in the 19th C as it remains today. That latter interpretation, I confess, is hindered by the absence of passion exhibited in any the four entangled 'love stories' of the narration. Marriages do occur eventually; I hope that's not too much of a spoiler, since I won't disclose how many or whom.One could also interpret The Europeans as a study of miscommunication. The title characters, a sister and brother whose mother was American but who have 'grown up' as thorough Europeans, come to visit their American cousins whom they've never met or known, who live quiet, sober lives in a Massachusetts village. The reader is 'encouraged' to suppose that the sister is both fleeing a milieu in Europe that has gone sour and seeking a 'fortunate' matrimonial opportunity. The American cousins and their social set are people of substantial means and insubstantial culture. Perplexed in every way by the arrival of such exotic relatives, nonetheless they generously welcome the travelers into their quaint puritanical family circle. What ensues is a minuet of misperceptions and miscues.James seems to have learned a good deal about the structural mechanics of novel-writing in the short time between "The American" and "The Europeans". Whereas in the former, he sometimes labors over describing a character in excessive external detail, in the latter he allows his characters to portray themselves through actions and dialogue. It's a subtler style of narrative, on a par with the polished best of Jane Austen or George Eliot. But of course the 19th C British 'novel of manners' was the model of all of Henry James's novels, a form he never abandoned. It's also quite plausible that James consciously intended "The Europeans" as a sequel to "The American," a thematic coda. It's not as exciting or insightful as its immediate predecessor, and it's barely a prophecy of the brilliance James would soon achieve in "The Bostonians". But it's too artfully written not to be entertaining as a display of craft.

A pair of siblings from Europe, brother Felix and sister Eugenia, have come to America to visit their relatives, hoping to find them rich. The two can be called adventurers, gold-diggers. He is a sort of bohemian, while she is married to a German prince, who is about to get rid of her. (At the time, Germany had an abundance of princes.)They find their relatives a large, reasonably well to do, well established family in the outskirts. The Wentworths are puzzled by the unexpected visitors, and behave with decency. There are some unmarried young cousins in the family. Felix is a charmer and reacts positively. Eugenia is a more difficult character and for her the cultural shock is a problem, as it is for the father of the Wentworth family. He is the brother of the visitors' mother. Relations were not close in the past. Eugenia's mother had run away at 20 into an unapproved marriage with a European.Like with James' previous novel about an American in Europe, the main subject here is the loss of meaning in cross-cultural communication. That is always good for various amusements of the mild to the hilarious kind. This book is more of the mild kind, which is not meant as a criticism.All in all, we have an interesting but not a great little novel about social affairs of the better classes in the 19th century. It lives mainly by the master's sparkling language. The people in the story are not all interesting. I would single out the two main women for being `interesting': Eugenia, the baroness, is a thoroughly discredited person who works hard at keeping up appearances, even to her brother, and probably even to herself. She lies shamelessly to everybody. While she rarely tells complete lies, she is also seldom completely truthful.The other interesting woman is Gertrude Wentworth. She puzzles us mostly through James' handling of her. She appears early like a person that makes you wonder if she is capricious or simple. She is certainly not shown as a particularly attractive woman, not by looks nor by her acts. Then during the plot, descriptions by the wise man in the off stop and Gertrude seems to become a totally different person: smart, attractive, headstrong ... the point is that these impressions are all given by other protagonists and we don't need to believe them. Has James planted mistrust in his people's statements and opinions?The last chapter is a roundup of characters and it ties up open ends, providing satisfaction to some and frustration to others. It is not convincing as a narrative device, to me. It reminds me of James' later failed attempts to become a stage writer. Chapter 12 here is like a less than interesting romantic play. I can do without those.

By A Customer Europeans presents a quick summation of why Henry James is among the most illustrious and celebrated American authors. His writing in this book surveys the interaction of European society with early, austere, and moralisitc American culture. For historians and sociologists alike, as well as avid fans of lit., James illuminates interactions of the respective characters with poised rhetorical grace, and his sketches are highly readable, understandable, and enjoyable. James can be an intimidating author to approach for people like me (a college sophomore), who are beginning to appreciate the pleasure of reading such fine authors; reading a short, yet engaging, work such as Europeans is an excellent jumping off point to a later appreciation and enjoyment of the author's more prodigious epics, such as The Portrait of the Lady. I can say that after reading Europeans, I have more confidence and comfort taking off the shelf a longer work by James, simply in knowing that I can comprehend his shorter designs. I also recommend for those like me to try out his short fiction. Concluding, reading this work has made me very excited to read further works by James, as I plan to read the entirety of his literary output. It is the brilliance and charm of Europenas that has instilled in me this excitment.

Nadia Natali's story features a cast of troublesome but endearing characters, all described with love and clarity. As I read each chapter I began to see Natali as a spirit guide sharing memories from her early days as a child of luxury, to the later hardships and joys as a wife and mother living off the grid, in a teepee with her husband Enrico and their children. It is a story told with fearless honesty, including the tragic loss of her son and her evolution to dance therapy to help others work through their pain of personal loss. The book is packed with amazing stories told by a woman who understands that no truth is too hard to face, and from this she has emerged transcendent.

This will take its place as a favorite among all my books. The play is magical, and the mix of genius -- Shakespeare's words and Rackham's imagery -- transported me to another world. There's nothing like it!!! As a fairy photographer/artist [...] I'm passionate about this genre and have have seen many of Rackham's illustrations before. It is really great to see them here with the story. There are the color copies from the plates, but also a plethora of elegant and whimsical pen and ink fairy drawings that introduce the chapters and decorate the pages that I'd never seen. Oh for joy. The pages appear to be copied from the original book (as if duplicated by scanning the original 1908 pages, but cleaned up to look new and enlarged), and they did a great job. The quality of the color reproductions is very good, especially for a paperback in this price range. I would love to have this in a hardback -- the publishers would do well to create an even fancier edition of this hearthrob -- the same size but with a more vintage-look and feel. The soft paperback tends to splay in my hands in its large format. This is a keeper and one that I'd like to last for years. Go check out the reviews on other publications of this play by itself without the illustrations -- you will find an audience that has been spellbound.I also found a university site with the original book binding and almost all the images in the book scanned -- these are fabulous references:[...]This is one of those books for which I'd enjoy having the first edition. The original had around 40 bookplates. My websearch found only a subsequent edition (with 16 plates) for $200! Nery a copy of the original 1908 version was to be found. I wonder what THAT would go for!? Please let me know if you find one for a reasonable amount, which I doubt would happen. -- Antonia

By Felicia Filsdotter After I sadly lost an auction for a first edition of Midsummer Night's Dream with 1906 drawings by Arthur Rackham, I found and ordered this version -- a faithful copy. I'm delighted -- and not out so much money! :-)

Most of the books of its king feature only the plates with a brief description and the reader has to know the story to really understand and feel the image. Colour reproduction is not the best possible though. I have seen on the web the same images looking brighter and better. All in all it is a good book to have.

By Austin Elliott George Gissing is not a name most people would recognize as one of the great Victorian novelists.Though always admired by those who experienced his powerful and original work,he never achieved the wide readership that the critically underrated Trollope has,let alone the perennial favorites-the Brontes and Dickens.Even obviously lesser yet talented authors such as Wilkie Collins,Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Marie Corelli are certainly more read today than Gissing.Yet he was best English novelist(along with Thomas Hardy and Robert Louis Stevenson) of the late Victorian era with his unsparing realism and trenchant observations on class and manners filtered through a nervous and uncertain sensibility.His comparative obscurity may be due to the reputation his work has for being depressing(it is not)and his iconoclasm-he was an agnostic maverick whose criticisms of capitalism,religion and sex still will unease those seeking in Victorian literature an escape to simpler,kinder times.What is most remarkable about George Gissing(and sometimes most poignant)is that he had no set philosophy and was himself unable to extract concrete and assuring meanings from life even as he attempted to depict and explicate it."Born in Exile" tells the story of one Godwin Peake,a poor,socially insecure but brilliant college graduate whose yearnings to belong to the "respectable" world clash with his intellectual rejection of its conservatism. By lazza While Born in Exile is certainly a novel, it is actually a study of the spiritual/social upheavals during 1890s Britain. The aristocracy was losing its hold on power in the media, government and the church to the 'radicals', namely the emerging working class in democratic society. The main character in this novel is caught in the crossroads. On the one hand he aspires for the wealth and prestige found in the aristocracy, yet his background is humble and his spiritual beliefs are very modern (eg, he believes in evolution). His disgust of his working-class family and friends drive him to become a country 'gentleman' at all costs ... to the extent of becoming a complete charleton, abusing people's kind graces and forfeiting his own strongly-held religious beliefs. The end result is not entirely predictable.Born in Exile is a very intense read. It does plod along with excessive philisophical bantering. But the second half does move along at a reasonable pace and, overall, it is a worthy read.Bottom line: Gissing fans will love Born in Exile. George Gissing newbies should first read New Grub Street, his masterpiece.

Godwin Peak By Robin Friedman Just before publication in 1892, George Gissing changed the title of his novel to the evocative "Born in Exile" from the name of its primary character, the difficult, complex anti-hero, Godwin Peak. Although written after Gissing had made a name for himself with "New Grub Street" and other books, "Born in Exile" was a hard sell to the publishers. The book was rejected several times and nearly passed over. The book has remained little read over the years. Yet it is an extraordinary book, perhaps Gissing's best. For all its datedness, length and awkwardness, this book will reward careful reading.The book is a detailed study of its title character and a novel of ideas. The book is among the first and the best novels to explore the relationship between Darwinism and geology and traditional religious beliefs. The book has much to say about sexuality, about the life of the mind, the erosion of values, social classes, and social change. Gissing seemed greatly influenced by Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" and by Turgenev's "Fathers and Children" in writing "Born in Exile".In some respects, Peak is modeled of Gissing himself and Gissing described the novel to a friend as "a book I had to write". Born, as was Gissing himself, to a struggling lower-middle class pharmacist, Peak is intelligent, broodingly introspective, skeptical, and rootless. He is ashamed of his origins. He both envies and scorns the upper classes and believes his intellectual gifts entitle him to a higher place. Thus Peak sees himself, in a phrase repeated several times in the book as "Born in Exile."As a young man, Peak secures a scholarship to Whitelaw College where he distinguishes himself both in the sciences and in literature but cannot decide what he wants to do. In an odd but critical turn in the book, he leaves Whitelaw before his final year because his uncle proposes to open a cheap restaurant in the community and Peak believes this association with his uncle would shame him. He moves to London where he graduates from the London School of Mines, becomes a chemist, and falls in with a group of radical freethinkers and journalists. He has what seems to be the makings of a successful life. Peak is a skeptic and anonymously publishes an article "The New Sophistry" in a leading magazine which criticizes severely efforts to reconcile Darwinian science and geologic time with religion. The various types of arguments on all sides seem not much different from those in current debate.Dissatisfied with his social position, Peak leaves London to try to ingratiate himself into the upper classes. Peak says to a friend in a key passage of the book that he does not believe women need to be intelligent or enlightened: women need to be sexual. And so Peak goes to look for a wife and self-destructs in the process. Peak meets a family with a landed estate, the Warricombs, whom he had known from his days at Whitelaw. The father of the family, Martin Warricomb, is a student of geology. Peak pretends to have shifted his career goals to become a minister in the Church of England. Peak ingratiates himself with Martin Warricomb, who is surprisingly liberal minded, by trying to show Warricomb the sincerity of Peak's beliefs and the compatibilty of religious traditionalism with scientific modernism. Peak is interested in Warricomb's daughter, Sidwell, lovely and reserved and religiously traditional and unadventurous. At first, Sidwell is something of a stand-in for class, rather than a person Peak loves for herself. As the story develops, Peak seems to develop something of a genuine love for Sidwell. And oddly, Sidwell comes to love Peak.Peak lives with tension in his pursuit because he knows he is practicing deceit and living a lie. He is ashamed of doing so. Ultimately the truth comes out when Sidwell's brother Buckland, an old Whitelaw friend, discovers that Peak was the author of the anonymous article "The New Sophistry" which condemned efforts to reconcile religion and science. Buckland is himself a skeptic whose views are rough and not deeply considered but still are similar to Peak's and to modernity. Buckland has found his way to Peak's former small group of friends in London who are amazed that Peak is trying to pass himself off as a prospective clergyman. Buckland confronts Peak with what he has learned and tells Sidwell and Martin. Peak is disgraced and must leave Exeter. Even though she knows the truth, Sidwell still loves Peak. Her own religious and moral views have broadend under their acquaintance to something approaching free thought. Sidwell has achieved a substantial intellectual independence from her family and background. Before Peak leaves, the door is left open that they will marry if Peak establishes himself.Peak is miserable and lonely but he receives a bequest from an intellectual woman, Marcella Moxey, who unreciprocatedly had long loved him. With his financial future secured, Peak writes Sidwell a love letter, the first time he has opened himself up, proposing marriage. After much anguish, Sidwell rejects Peak and terminates the relationship. For all her intellectual change, Sidwell finds she cannot leave her family and its estate. Rootless and alone, Peak sets out for travel on the continent where he apparently lives the short life of a rake, contacts a disease, and dies homeless and alone."Born in Exile" is a study of a modern type, an intelligent, rootless, and confusedly amoral individual, in the dress of late Victorianism. The novel explores the loss of traditional religious faith and the lack of any apparent standards to replace it. Gissing, himself a nonbeliever, did not see humanism, social activism, or other nostrums as providing an adequate substitute for religion. Hence his novels, particularly this one, have a pessimistic philosophical cast.The book is long, with extensive passages of wordy dialogue and of introspective commentary, both of which are typical to Gissing. Other than the masterful portrayal of Peak, and to some extent the characterization and growth of Sidwell Warricomb, none of the other of the many characters and scenes are well-developed. It takes perseverance to read this book. For interested readers, perseverance will be richly rewarded. Although never likely to become popular, "Born in Exile" is a troubling and deeply perceptive philosophical exploration of modernity. Unfortunately, this book appears out of print. It richly deserves a new edition. I read this book in a Harvester Press edition from the mid-1980s with an introduction by the Gissing scholar Gillian Tindall.Robin Friedman

Worth a read by both physicians and non-physicians By Amazon Customer It is not too often that you come across a book written by a highly accomplished physician that encompasses the human aspects of medicine and is readable by both physicians and lay people alike. Also, it is not too often that you find a career physician who has a natural flare for non-medical writing. Dr. Jindal has led the respiratory medicine department of a premier institution of India for more than three decades and has built the division from a nascent stage to a great strength. During his long distinguished career and from his vantage point, he has seen a lot…a wide section of society… from the high and mighty to the poorest of the poor. But he not only has seen…he has observed and analyzed with the help of a widely read educated mind. Though called a memoir, it is less about his own life and more about the people he has encountered as patients, people who have remained memorable to him for one reason or another.The book starts with him sharing some childhood memories. In short sketches, he painted the almost medieval medicine practiced that time in rural India, but at the same time reminds us that “one cannot judge the past with current standards or modern parameters”. He also reminds us that even with modernity and all the explosion of knowledge, outdated practice is all around! Certainly true even as I write this review sitting in USA!In the next chapter, “Dissection hall”, he takes us through his experience in the early medical school. Effortlessly, he blends with his own experience interesting historical facts. After so many years after I completed medical school, I realized that my anatomy lessons were incomplete! No…I learned the facts well and got good knowledge and scored well…but I realized that while doing dissection, I never learnt to consciously respect the dead! If I remember this book for just one reason, it will be for imparting this sensitivity and awareness in me!Many stories follow…his experience of presenting his first case where he missed out important history… his experience in labor ward…the first death that had shaken him…story of a sick man who is trying to stay brave…the story of poor people who lost their ancestral home when Chandigarh…the “City Beautiful” was built…the story of Deepak Sharma and Dr Roger Bone who showed how to face death and still enjoy life in the trivia…the dilemma of decision making at the end of life….the stories turn into insightful lessons for any physician. The stories reflect how a wide range of human emotions and personalities can define how a person responds to a disease and to the fear of morbidity and mortality that comes with a serious disease. Understanding these reactions certainly can help one to be not just a better physician, but also a better human being. It also points what a physician can do to treat the person and not just the disease. The stories teach us that to be a good physician, it is important to develop a binding interest in the “human” behind a “patient”. Through the writing are evident the author’s wisdom and deep understanding of human life and persona.Several stories also bring out unique sociocultural aspects of Indian society that interact with the practice of medicine….be it the VIP culture, the mindset of high and mighty, the arrogance of rich, or deep seated cultural beliefs about illnesses, taboos etc. Also, it is striking how some of these things have remained unchanged over decades…as I have experienced those issues in the same way as the author had, though there is a time frame shift of almost 30 years between his training/practice and mine.Many of the stories contain interesting historical anecdotes. Generally, these pieces have effortlessly blended and enriched the book; however, occasionally (e.g. in the story “erythrocyte sedimentation rate”) the transitions from storyline to the historical fact appear to be abrupt, interfering with the smooth flow of storytelling.To me, the EPILOGUE remains somewhat disappointing. In the preceding chapter, “Knowledge explosion” and then in “Epilogue”, the author has mentioned that knowledge explosion has happened, often leading to unrealistic expectations. He has acknowledged the growing complexity of medicine. In the epilogue, he also has rightfully pointed out at the problems of eroding doctor-patient relationship, violence against doctor. But he did not explore deeply the cause for these or the positive side of knowledge explosion. Knowledge explosion is bringing a much needed change in practice of medicine: in a better informed market place, there will be demand for quality and transparency, better communication and better recognition of the patient as a partner in the process of medical treatment. A great lack of transparency and honest communication are probably most important reasons of anger and mistrust against the medical community in India…and in an environment of suspicion and general societal impatience, anger often becomes misplaced and out of proportion. A much needed part of the epilogue in my view could be an in depth analysis of how “understanding people” is important for successful and meaningful practice of medicine, also contributing to patient satisfaction. Without some understanding of human psychology, frailties and human flaws, patience and empathy are bound to be missing in the practice of medicine in spite of all the scientific training. That in turn can lead to patient anger and frustration. How does a physician prepare himself or herself for the task? In my view, our medical training does not prepare us at all for the same. In majority cases, one enters medical school in India at a tender age of 17-18 yrs. In the years in high school, his or her time has been spent in preparing for the competitive examination for medical school entry! His years in medical school go by in a sea of studies, in mastering the technical skills and in preparing for intense competition of professional life. Too often, this leaves no time for preparing for life as a physician, which I view as a preparation more than just honing the skills in diagnosis and management of disease entities. The medical education system does very little to develop a philosophical bending of mind or a sense of empathy that help a physician to feel the trials that a patient goes through. This could be the focus of the epilogue.These stories transcend the boundaries of time and geography. Reading this book will be immensely helpful to any physician at any stage of his career. This is certainly also of interest to non-physicians alike. The footprints of an erudite, sensitive, caring and philosophical mind are evident in the stories.Will give 4.5 star to be more precise!-Pralay Sarkar, Houston, Texas

True stories of the patients from very poor human beings to the great Jayaprakash Narayan , Strong police officers to PM shows his healing touch to all with a very humble soul of a healing doctor. It is really refreshing to see and listen from the pen of a doctor who was equally empathetic to one and all . At times his stories fall in the category of great Indian Story teller - Prem Chand ,and his style and narrative matches Arthur Koestler and V S Naipaul. Young Doctors can learn a lot about healing from this book and patients can learn to be patient with a disease and have faith on the healing doctor ,and young Internet enthusiast can learn , how not to be misled by Internet knowledge .

About the Author CHRIS CHARLTON's first introduction to Japanese wrestling was on a shaky VHS copy of the 1994 Super J Cup. Five years after that viewing, he moved to Japan, where he has lived for the past decade. Immersed in the wrestling culture, Chris trained in the UK, where he wrestled for Midlands Pro Wrestling and NWA: UK Hammerlock. In Japan, he wrestled for various small independents before realising his talents were perhaps best served away from the ring. Since 2012, he has co-hosted Live Audio Wrestling's monthly Japanese podcast with WH Park, as well as commentating extensively on videogames and sub cultures at kaijupop.com. Chris currently lives in Yokohama with his wife and son. This is his first book.

As someone who just started watching NJPW with WrestleKingdom 9, it was a great history of the company. Would be interested in a physical copy if price (currently $35 price tag) goes down at some point. Definitely would read again.

A Fantastic History Of Japanese Pro Wrestling By Nate I first became aware of Chris Charlton through Live Audio Wrestling and his podcast there, Japanese Audio Wrestling. Being a big fan of New Japan, having a semi-regular podcast in English is a godsend. When I heard that he was writing a book on the history of the promotion, I was pretty stoked to check it out."Lion's Pride" is an excellent history of the promotion. It starts with Antonio Inoki leaving the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance in 1972 and starting his own promotion, which he would call New Japan. It leads through the company's highs and lows, achievements and missteps, their relationship with foreign talents and how they develop their own Japanese talent. It covers all the major players in the company over the years: Inoki, Fujinami, Choshu, Hashimoto, Sasaki and right up to the present crop of New Japan talent (Okada, Tanahashi, etc.)Charleton's writing style is informative and easy to read. It is a fun trip through the history of the best wrestling promotion in the world. And having such a history in English is amazing. The only complaint that I even remotely have about this book is that I wish it was longer. I enjoyed it so much that I wish it would've been twice as long.This is a highly recommended read for anyone with interest in Japanese wrestling or in the history of the sport in general. Well done.

Willitts A long time wrestling fan from the 1970s onward, ice been aware of NJPW, mostly through their cooperative work with NWA/WCW and ROH. As such, my familiarity was vague at best, so reading a more in depth explanation and history was something both entertaining and educational.Written in a very easy to read style, this book covers both the positive and negatives of the company, its various experiments and highs and lows. Highly recommend to ask wrestling fans.

It was another miserable, hot day in the hell they called Dong Ha, Vietnam. I was hanging on the fence just below the razor wire with my head dropped in shame. The rock I had just thrown at the POW missed, but the act stung like a killer bee. I knew instantly when he glanced towards me and our eyes met it was a cowardly act. “The Look” he gave would serve me well for the rest of my life. We were two young men caught in a war we both knew very little about. One was being held as a trophy on display and the other just angry; waiting for his ride home from a hell hole they called war. Who put us there does not factor. Only how we conduct the acts we are obligated to perform stands the test of time. Those acts will be memories parading through our minds for the rest of our lives causing shame, guilt, pride, or lack of either. Within seconds after throwing that rock I knew he and I would both always remember this moment in time. The empathy overwhelming at times ends only when hopeful thoughts of his survival relieve the vision. Our path crossing again is unlikely, but that memory serves as a reminder that we will always be inseparable in thought. This early lesson in humanity guided many actions of a nineteen year old into maturity with constant reminders. Repeating an episode of this behavior was never repeated again. So for that one look, that one look of disappointment in the prisoner’s eyes I owe a deep sincere appreciation. With that split second stare I obtained a valuable necessary lesson in life. In the Library of Congress the book of U.S. Marines in Vietnam “An Expanding War” 1966 there is mention of a prisoner captured near the Cam Lo and Dong Ha area. Under some persuasion and interrogation he gave up the plans of the Northern invaders to retake the Rock Pile and DMZ areas of Vietnam. In this little French made fort the process of extracting this information took place only one thin wall away from my presence. Making sense of it all is the question I keep asking myself these days. We live, love, laugh, prosper, and enjoy our lives for so many years before this question even becomes a thought. In an almost panic to put it all together we may feel compelled to divide our lives in sections of importance. Remembering what made us this way, what developed our skills, and how they were acquired must shed light on where our personality and traits, good or bad, came from. This writer hopes somehow after reading this memoir others can relate to their childhood knowing that maturity feeds the question “who am I”, and how did I get this way? If we are to understand this, then it would seem possible to come to grips with our accomplishments and disappointments in a manner that will help us understand the twists and turns of your own lives. This look back should not be to find blame for our decisions. We were all “in charge” of our lives after a certain age. We have all had the option to change directions at any time during our adult years. Even though our childhood experiences had profound influence on our future, we all eventually knew right from wrong, and the decisions we made, good or bad, became solely our responsibility. The potential of severe emotional toll that surfaces on most all participants is not to be taken lightly. Looking back through the years with as much detachment and humor as possible feels like a much healthier agenda. Does denying our negative history enable us to start over, or just suggest the inability to let it go? No need, it will always be there. The primary fuel for starting this memoir has been to explore the lasting effect on combat-zone youth and military or civilian personal with similar exposure to war. I hope the following chapters will expose the intent to explain lack of accomplishments or poor choices of direction is not to lay blame on others. Own It, heal it, and survive the experience with a measure of success.

About the Author Anxious to live life to its fullest upon serving four years in the Marines, Gary rushed into things he felt passionate about. After surviving as a combat marine in Vietnam, he caddied on the West Coast Swing's PGA tour for a few years. He embarked on a Radio career that included disc-jockey work and jingle production and, although Gary had successful careers in both radio and construction, he was always involved in music. He has produced hit records, had songs placed in movies and TV and was band leader for Country Music Hall of Fame artist Johnny Western. Gary obtained his General Contractor's license in 2000 and has built over 2 dozen multi-family housing projects. Today, although officially retired, because of his reputation as a highly skilled Contractor, he is often asked to be a consultant on major construction projects. Clemmons has few regrets as he looks back on his life. In this autobiography, he has revisited the good times and the bad, the successes and the struggles. He has shared, as best he can, those moments of clarity that have helped him make sense of the path his life has taken after a combat tour. Most importantly he has allowed himself to gain some peace and understanding. In a combat zone one will learn to embrace each day as if it could be your last. The urgency and the rush, along with a noticeably more serious outlook experienced in combat, becomes natural behavior when each day presents a challenge to survive. This acute awareness did not come with an off and on switch. It lingers with intensity and becomes a major part of a personality. There is an invisible shield emblazoned with the caveat, “They are out to get me” across the top and "Be prepared to act first" across the bottom. Most veterans who have experienced a war zone will remain in a state of paranoia unless they seek counseling. PTSD, you say? What is it and what are the symptoms? It can vary for each individual. But studies have also discovered there are several similarities. Many returning combat veterans have had broken homes and multiple marriages. They have worked in several different professions and suffer from serious episodes of depression. Some have a very difficult time making good decisions and achieving goals so become prone to serious personality disorders. Gary's hope is that by sharing his story, it will inspire a few of America’s current returning combat veterans to never lose hope. The memories, stories, and recollections in this memoir are unique to the author. His personal decisions along with planned and unplanned experiences have shaped a unique individual just as your actions have defined who you are today. But in many ways we are all the same. We want to be happy and respected with whom we are. Some will deny it, but we all want to feel accepted and loved. Many veterans learn to only allow a certain level of closeness. As we interact with each other through life’s journey, let’s have some compassion for others and occasionally whisper, “It could have been me”.

How can someone go through so much and still be able to keep it together and continue living and working with such damage? Gary is unique and a real MAN. He is 7 world class author too. A wonderful read on how events in Garys early years helped him stay alive in Vietnam and then how his passion for music kept him alive.

I loved the constant jokes and comments he made in (and out) his head. The fact that Ana got his humor and he made her laugh as often as he did just adds to the many reason they are a great couple. Ana is a very enjoyable heroine to read. She brings a very unique ability to the series. She also sheds some more light on the mysterious crystals that the Cult of Atlantis/Stranger/Elite is adorned with.The new danger to Envy is definitely attention grabbing. Bounty hunters are after Quent because of what he took from his father. The Elite have been informing the Atlanteans that the residents of Envy are stronger than they appear and need to be stopped before they rise up. Ana is in tune with the ocean enough that she knows something is wrong deep in its depths, and then something strange washes up on the shore of Envy.I was glad to read pieces where past couples were involved. Zoe and Quent had larger roles than some of the other past couples. I was never a Zoe fan. She has been my least favorite heroine of the series. The fact the she got as much page time as she did annoyed me. I'm still very curious about Wyatt and when he will get his book. I think Joss may have set that up some at the end of Night Forbidden. I'll keep my fingers crossed on that wish.This is an easy series for me to love. I love paranormal romance. The paranormal element is also different from most. The majority of the characters were born human and the Change has changed them. The readers are still learning new things about the force behind the Change. I love reading worlds that have been affected by an apocalypse. The Envy Chronicles puts both of these elements into one book.

By Kristina Review Courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyNIGHT FORBIDDEN could very well have been a solo story rather than the latest installment in the Envy Chronicles series and it would have worked just as well from a story perspective. I enjoy a good post-apocalypse story and what made NIGHT FORBIDDEN uniquely exciting was the addition of Atlantis being a reason for the Earth's near total destruction. I thought it was a cool idea to have Fence his friends be from the past (our present) though I would have liked to see some more differences or adjustments for them which they probably dealt with in previous books.With many apocalypse stories we get zombies and NIGHT FORBIDDEN is no exception, but they were barely seen which I found odd since they kept referencing them. They seemed like such a small threat that when they did show up I just didn't care and wanted to get back to talking about the central mystery of the story.Fence was a fun character and I enjoyed his heroic acts just as much as his corny jokes and hilarious comments. He and his friends came out of a Sedona cave 80 years in the future and some of them came out with some unique powers. I kind of felt bad for him throughout most of the book as he's the one guy that survived the apocalypse but didn't get any special abilities. On the plus side, he does get the girl. I loved how well Fence and Ana got along almost instantly and how Ana really `got' and liked Fence's humor and personality. I really liked Ana's backstory reveal as it links her to Atlantis and the big mystery surrounding it in this story.While I enjoyed the central story about Atlantis and the danger surrounding the town of Envy, I would have loved to have learned even more about the fabled lost island. NIGHT FORBIDDEN contains a compelling and complex storyline with a slowly building yet touching romance. The fifth book, NIGHT RESURRECTED comes out February 26th 2013.

I've never picked up a apocalyptic book but I have to say that she made me like this genre. I tend to think of I am Legend when thinking of apocalyptic stories. So this is my first book in the Envy Chronicles that I have read, but after reading this book I'm continuing on to book one."Fence took a healthy gulp of beer. That was, at least, one thing that hadn't disappeared since the Change. Man hadn't forgotten the important things in life." My girls would love this. LOLCan you imagine a world like this "And by "number," Elliott meant room number. No one had phones anymore, or even email, and definitely not Facebook." I can do without Facebook, but emails.... really. I pray that there's books, or I'll go stir crazy.In this book we see that the world is overpopulated by Zombies and the western part of the USA is GONE. And get this there's Merfolks (I love Merpeople sorry) 50 years into the future we meet Fence and a couple of other guys who were trapped in the Sedona cave, they'd somehow time-traveled or slept through fifty years without aging. And if you ask me that's cool. Some of the men came out of the cave with special abilities. Fence not being one of them but he still kicked major ass.Loved how Fence and Ana were good for each other. They were like a puzzle that fit so well together. Ana was a cool heroine and I really liked her and her ability (being able to breathe under water). She wasn't a damsel in distress, so in my book she was also kick ass.I'm really excited to start this series from the beginning and continuing when the next book comes out. I would recommend this book/series to anyone looking for a little twist to paranormal romance and a kick ass story.*ARC provided by publisher
