I absolutely love submersing myself into the enchanting world K.K. Allen has created with this series. This book brings forth a ton of juicy information that may have been foreshadowed a bit in the prior books. It is also more action-packed and suspenseful. Don't be surprised if this book makes you shed a tear or two, but it may also make you melt with happiness and love. The characters have really grown on me, especially Katrina and Rose. I was happy to see that all of my favorite characters made an appearance in this book. Also, an intriguing new character is introduced. If you've read and loved the first two books in this series, then you must read this one! Somehow, each book gets better, and this one is my favorite of the three. If you haven't read this series yet, start it with The Summer Solstice: Enchanted.*Please note that I did receive an advanced reading copy of this book. However, it did not alter my opinion of it in any way.

Definitely my favorite book of the series and it is going to be so dang hard to write this review without blabbing every spoiler there is to give because oh my gosh so much happened.Kat is trying to live her life as normally as she can after Johnny left and her Dad returned. Erebus is doing everything in his power to get to her and her family and friends are trying to protect her, like she needs to be protected. She finds out some secrets that and sets a plan in motion to take on Erebus, alone. Will she be able to save everyone that she cares for before it's too late?Okay so I'm not going to lie, I think Johnny also broke my heart when he left at the end of the second book. I was also devastated so I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to read this book. Thankfully I made myself read it anyway with the hopes that Allen could mend both of our hearts. I love the romance in this book, it's not so much that it takes away from the story but it's not so little that I'm screaming at the book. It's a good balance of magic, romance and family bonding to make it an amazing book.Normally I hate when books tell stories through memories but it works in this book. It helped move the story along and answered a lot of questions. I loved the relationship that has grown between Kat and Rose, it was so sweet to witness. The bond that was formed between Kat and her dad was surprising but a nice surprise. Not sure I would have been as forgiving as Kat but that's a good thing. This book was a lot more action packed than the previous too and I loved it. It was also more suspenseful, not going to lie it had my heart beating fast a time or two. There was a plot twist thrown in there that I really did not see coming, bravo Allen for pulling one over on me.This is one of the best series' that I have ever read and seriously want everyone to read it. I highly recommend it to everyone that needs a little magic in their lives.

Allen's Summer Solstice trilogy concludes in "The Descendants", with more action, more suspense, and more romance! Katrina Summers journey of discovery and destiny has been building steadily since the first installment, "Enchanted", and fans of the series up to this point will not be disappointed as Kat embraces that destiny and an exciting future. If you are a fan of the series, you will be excited to see old friends return, including Kat's sassy grandmother Rose; her loyal companion/ caretaker Charlotte; and Kat's circle of friends and fellow Enchanters. Kat's past becomes very important in this book and the return of important people from that past makes for emotional turmoil and tension.Romance is, of course, a central point of the series, and this book doesn't disappoint. Kat's friend and sometime romantic interest Alec returns. After the events of book two, "The Equinox", Kat's broken heart is beginning to mend, her friendship with Alec a pivotal part of that. But life in Apollo Beach is never predictable and Kat's heart is thrown into turmoil again starting at the Winter Masquerade.SPOLIER ALERT:Yes, Johnny Pierce is back... Thank Poseiden!!!Over the three books, the romantic elements were written so well, so real, and never went t-h-e-r-e. Everything's clean and fresh, but at the same time intensely passionate. Even at my age (decidedly older than the "target audience"), I have to admit those moments spent with Kat and Johnny in books two and three left me a bit breathless. ;)The climatic moments are intense, heartbreaking, emotional, beautiful... It wraps up the story so well, bringing some characters together, tearing others apart, and leaving plenty of room for perhaps more stories? Please, K.K.??Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the whole series. If you enjoy romance, action, a little teen angst, and a truly unique coming-of-age story, you have to read "The Descendants"... You will not be disappointed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intelligent and Emotional By Lincs Reader Author Amanda Jennings is quoted on the front cover of How To Be Brave, she says;"Moving, engrossing and richly drawn, this is storytelling in its purest form .... mesmerising."Amanda has summed up exactly what I would like to say about How To Be Brave, especially her point about storytelling. This really is a perfect example of how a story should be told, and Louise Beech tells not just one story in How To Be Brave, but two. Her modern-day tale of Natalie and Rose, and how they deal with a devastating medical diagnosis is beautifully woven together with Colin's story of survival during World War Two.Two very different stories of battle and endurance, set in different eras and dealing with different issues, but bound together by hope and resilience.Natalie and Rose had the strongest of mother-daughter relationships. With father Jake away fighting in Afghanistan, Natalie has the responsibility of ensuring that Rose's everyday needs are met, that she is happy and that she doesn't miss her father too much. Rose and Natalie share a love of books, and Rose spends hours curled up in her 'book nook' escaping to the places in the stories in her books.Their relationship shatters when Rose is diagnosed with diabetes. Although she's a bright and mature child, she's only nine-years-old and her fear manifests into bad behaviour, surly retorts, foul language and a sudden hatred of books. Natalie struggles to cope, she hates having to inflict pain onto her daughter, yet knows that the regular injections and blood tests are vital for Rose.Alongside Rose and Natalie is a shadowy figure of an elderly man who tells them to 'find the book'.This is when the diary of their ancestor Colin starts to play a big part in their life. Colin's account of the time that he was 'lost' at sea becomes their focus, and their guide, and enables them to find their own way through their upheavals. With a hint of ghost story, mixed up with contemporary, up to the minute narrative and a good dose of wartime history, How To Be Brave is a very special, unique and quite beautiful story. The stories are blended to perfection, the author masterfully and seamlessly knits them together resulting in a hugely satisfying, intelligent and emotional creation.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quite wonderful By Welsh Annie This wonderful book held me totally spellbound from first page to last, and will stay with me for a very long time. The structure of the story is quite special - two very different journeys, challenging in very different ways. The modern thread features mother Natalie - her husband facing challenges of his own as a front-line soldier - wrestling her way through her relationship with daughter Rose who is facing a life-threatening illness. Rose fights her mother every step of the way until they uncover the diary of her great-grandfather Colin - who also appears as a reassuring presence - written as he tries to survive life at sea after the sinking of his ship in the Atlantic. There are some wonderful moments of synchronicity and overlap between the two stories, and we share Natalie and Rose's enchantment and horror as Colin's story unfolds. The writing is simply beautiful - quite effortless prose, full of emotion, totally engrossing whichever strand of the story you may be immersed in. The relationships are perfectly drawn - whether it's Natalie's relationship with her daughter, her husband at a distance or her next door neighbour, or Colin's with his colleagues on the lifeboat, desperately trying to survive. It's a wonderful story about what bravery really is, the power of words and stories, full of immense sadness, but full of hope and suffused with love.I was absolutely enthralled by this book from beginning to end, with scenes that will stay in my memory for a very long time - whether it's Rose injecting her bruised flesh, Natalie and her mallet, the lead shark following Colin's lifeboat, or the simple reading of the daily prayer. Quite wonderful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. however in this instance the alternating between past and present worked wonderfully. I’m also not a frequent reader of paranorm By Melinda not a fan of split narratives, however in this instance the alternating between past and present worked wonderfully. I’m also not a frequent reader of paranormal, yet again Beech masterfully knitted this into the narrative with perfection.Beech’s writing is stunning, penetrating. Considering Colin’s story is fact based on his experience and journal entries makes it all the more moving and haunting. Beech’s use of language emotionally grips her audience from beginning to end. Both Colin and Rose’s story will capture you mind, body and spirit.I connected with Colin’s story the most, poignant. His harrowing ordeal, the thread of hope he maintained when his peers perish around him. His hunger and thirst never ceasing. His bravery was arresting. I felt the sting of saltwater, the burn of the sun, constant hunger pangs, counting the days adrift bargaining with God, his ordeal is beyond moving.Louise Beech impresses with this amazing debut novel. Her writing is solid, she certainly comes across as a seasoned author rather than a neophyte. I am anxious to read future writings from this gifted authoress.A marvelous book demonstrating bravery and courage we all possess, along with how a story wields unimaginable power. A story not to be missed.

"Doc" Boyle [ASIN:1930584407] "Dog Soldier Moon" is woven around the mixed inhabitants of an isolated Texas trading post supplying buffalo hunters and Indians, either of whom might trade or attack. This raw and realistic sequel to "No Good Like It Is" [ASIN:1450580785] again follows the fortunes of ex- Confederate soldiers "Captain" Dobey Walls and "Boss" Jimmy Melton in their trials and travels through the post-Civil War west. The curse and blessings of a purloined Yankee army payroll, Pinkerton reward money blowing in the wind, and a man-eating bear add to this complex tale of bordellos, babies, bushwhackers and a notorious massacre; culminating in most unexpected and unusual Christmas present. Mike knows his guns, and his history! In "Dog Soldier Moon" he weaves an intriguing tale and provides clear vision into our fascinating western past for his readers.R.W. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Brings western history alive By Bonnie Toews This sequel to "No Good Like It Is" continues the story of Dobey Walls and Jimmy "Boss" Melton. The writing style, dialogue and historical imagery carry on with the same "you-are-there" intensity. As with another series I read where the full-length story was split into two, I wish publishers today weren't against letting a saga be a saga. Can you imagine "Gone with the Wind" split into two books? I know the movie did it with an intermission between, but the satisfaction of that great book -- or "North and South" -- is because the entire story is told intact. I believe these two novels fall into the same category. Everything that made McKendree Long's first novel great carries on in this one as more tragedy befalls the two men between 1866 and 1869. Two Pinkerton men continue to hunt them down for stealing a Yankee payroll at the end of the Civil War while roaming buffalo hunters defile Canadian Fort - their isolated trading post in Texas - and rape and kill their women when the two men are away trading and selling buffalo hides along the Sante Fe trail. Once Dobey and "Boss" return, their purpose turns to retribution and vengeance as they hunt the raiders. Their journey introduces readers to such historical figures as Chief Black Kettle and General Custer, who massacred Black Kettle's Cheyenne camp, along with the famous Bill Hickock. This second novel rounds out this intensely lifelike western series with a wonderful Christmas surprise. For fans of western history, you have to read both books to enjoy the continuity.

McDonald Jr. Author McKendree Long paints a gripping story with just the right words - it is pure word artistry and it is masterly done. His talent is showcased by a great storyline and characters. He takes the reader on an entertainment voyage - and one gets fully enthralled with the adventure story as it unfolds from page to page. His book "Dog Soldier Moon" is a sequel - which I only found out after reading other reviews - it was done is such a manner that it totally stood on its own. So one does not have had to read the other book first. This takes you right up to speed and I had no issues with understanding the people and motivations involved. Let me say this however, now that I know there is a front to this storyline, I want to go back and read the first book!If you love this time period of history and like great novels this is a good fit for you. You can escape the world of today and go back in time. The author actually makes you feel like you are right there following the characters as you get hooked on what is happening to them. A wonderful novel to pick up and read or to download. I fully without hesitation give this book my fullest recommendations.W.H. Bravo By eleanor murphy This book is an amazing inside look into the corruption of the Federal Court and Prison Systems and one mans struggle to survive it all. Donavon keeps your attention at all times. You feel like you are right there with him. Unlike most books written by former inmates, Donavan tells you exactly how it was and how it is. You have to appreciate the bluntness of his then reality. I was more than impressed with his writing skills, clearly his passion to get his point across to the reader is more than evident. I would call this author brilliant. I believe that Donavon Bradley will be a name soon recognized by many as an accomplished author. Living Proof that just because we sometimes make grave mistakes in life, it is not the end. But in this case a new beginning.

This book would rate at the top of my favorites list. As Donavon tells us the story of his life, he opens us to a world many of had no clue and inspires those who do to turn their life around. I couldn't put it down. I recommend all to read this book and have faith that God and perseverance can change anyone's life.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cubic Zirconia By Back To Reality I think it's very creative how the author manages to embellish aspects of his life, bringing about a new and improved story that would capture the attention of readers that are eager to hear an exciting hood story. But, if you're really paying attention, there are a few nuances that are not consistent with what one would call "the ghetto." Although he tries to use language native to the street, certain things are out of place (ex: c**t and schmuck). This tells you a lot about the author. Additionally, he seems to navigate through his environment with a Marvel Comic type persona as though no one can touch him except for maybe law enforcement in force. The ultimate bad boy story pushes the envelope in this case.Being from the same neighborhood as the author, I can hardly call any part of the Phoebus or Buckroe neighborhoods of Hampton, VA "the streets" or "the ghetto" for that matter. Having spent many years moving between there and DC, there's a stark contrast between the lifestyles. Hampton is a sleeper/military town where many of the natives to the area are likely related. Nothing really happens around the way without everyone hearing about it. At some point, most people who are caught up in foolish cross paths. It's also the kind of place that out-of-towners are emulated in order establish a sense of identity. Unfortunately, that's why many of my old associates referenced in this story got caught up. Though things weren't that good, lust was the primary motivator.Never knew this much about Donavon Bradley (no one talked about him at cookouts). Incredible tale!! This is for the rest of the world. Enjoy!!

Excerpt from The Patriot Preachers of the American Revolution: With Biographical Sketches, 1776-1783It is the purpose of the editor of this volume to present a collection of the most characteristic Sermons, that were preached by the most celebrated divines, who occupied the American pulpits during the period extending from the Repeal of the Stamp Act, in 1766, through the Revolution, to the establishment of peace in 1783. The propriety of the publication of such a collection at the present time must be apparent to readers of all classes. The universal assertion that "the preachers of the Revolution did not hesitate to attack the great political and social evils of their day," demands a support, which nothing but the reproduction of their strong, practical appeals, can afford. As such, this collection is offered.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If you are a history buff this is sure to be of interest. Many Pastors lost their churches, their lives and their families because they stood and preached freedom from Britain and King George. This is a good addition to your home library and most certainly good info to share with friends and family.

Author Melinda Worth Popham left home for Yale Divinity School at age fiftysix after a barrage of painful life events-above all, the nightmare of her teenage daughter's lifethreatening depression. These events brought her to her knees, and a monastic method of meditation became her mainstay as well as her portal to the holy.

This memoir, Grace Period, tells the story of one mother's experience of a daughter's intractable illness and the discovery that pain is the Miracle Gro of spiritual growth. The radical, mystical experience that ultimately propelled Popham to Yale Divinity School at a pivotal juncture in her life did not lead to the pursuit of latecall ordination to the ministry, but quite simply to her study of God.

What she discovered, though, in the course of her two years there, was that, for her, encountering God happened beyond the study of theology at an Ivy League seminary. It came from her extracurricular encounters with offleash dogs, a shining meadow, bad neighbors, and fierce loneliness. Grace Period is not only about Popham's study of God, but about God's education of her.

Beautiful and moving memoir By PacificCoastMom This story of one woman's spiritual journey through the dark night of the soul was achingly honest, gently funny, and full of of of amazing, stop-I-need-to-highlight-this quotes. Anchored by her spiritual musings, this memoir is an alternately delightful and compelling read: it is simply remarkable the way it never once descends into preachiness yet gently offers the reader multiple opportunities to gain his or her own greater understanding of the divine presence. While at one level, this is a recounting of the events that came to pass so that Popham finds herself at Yale's Divinity school, in a way, it is as much a love letter to her children, especially her daughter, as anything else. While Popham's story is uniquely her own, the author speaks with such sincerity that it touches on some universals about the depths and complexities of a mother's love and experience, the adoration and, at times, complete helplessness a mother feels for her child. Reading it, I think, has helped me to better understand my relationship with my own mother and also to be a better mother to my children. I highly recommend this book.

A Tall Order By Jenny Lawrence I read Melinda Popham's journey through divorce and her daughter's profound depression that eventually leads the author to Yale Divinity School with complete absorption...identifying, admiring, laughing out loud, loving the abundant particulars and the seamless riffs through time and back again. The words (recursively, oblate, Yahrzeit), the ideas (probing darkness, showing faith, centering prayer), the quotes (Merton, Ruskin, Yeats, Kenyon, Browning) are woven together by the author into an astonishing, intelligent, stunning story.Boy can she write! Here's a wonderful line: “The two-steps forward, one-back progress of my spiritual path resembled the silt-weighted, goose-necked river that geologists term an “entrenched meander”....And this one on, of all things, a pilot light: “To this day, whenever I come across a reference to the 'divine spark' or 'inner light,' I picture that little lick of flame, that stubby blue nubbin, that tiny eternal flame steadfastly burning away in that ancient oven’s innermost recesses”....And this: “Loneliness had the muscle to make me feel flimsy, miserable, unworthy, forgotten, and unloved”....Popham portrays her children with intensity, generosity, and caring. Bravo to their giving her the go-ahead to re-experience and articulate these painful times. At one point a woman at her gym expresses admiration to Popham for going off to Yale Divinity School at age 56, calling it "adventurous and brave and tall." It is true. Melinda Popham has done something very tall in giving us GRACE PERIOD.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. she picked herself up by imagining the Good Shepherd’s crook helping her to her feet and nudging ... By Appreciative Athiest Grace Period does the near impossible: in her witty, delightfully irreverent, twangy Kansas City prose, Popham takes you with her into the very heart of religious experience. You don’t have to have a religious bone in your body (I don’t) to identify with someone who gives up anxiety for Lent! Or who can laugh at her misery, as in: “Professor Fassler had told us that when she felt depleted, she picked herself up by imagining the Good Shepherd’s crook helping her to her feet and nudging her along. The way I was feeling that day, it would have taken something more along the lines of cocktails and dinner with Jesus at a seaside restaurant in Galilee to get me up to speed.”Popham’s writing is so vivid, you are there, experiencing the stakes, the struggles, wrong turns, and depths her spiritual journey. What a journey it is, beginning with a marriage and motherhood crisis so gripping it might have been a book on its own, except that, as Popham learns: “it’s the hard blessing of sorrows that bring you to your knees.” And so beautifully put about herself and her classmates at Div School, “It was when we were in extremis, our lives brought to a beveled edge, that God had graciously manifested himself to us in some indubitable way.” Grace Period highlights the sacred in ordinary life. Readers might see it in her prose as well.

There is a perversion of the American Dream that says greed is good, and that we should live, love, work, and advance inside the fences drawn by politics, religion, and laws. It is wrong. Through senseless inner-city death, the My Lai massacre, the taking of the Pueblo, a drug-addled return from Vietnam, and a trip across the United States with a Frisbee, the authors tell how The American Dream is still reachable, but you have to get out beyond the fences to find it. This book shows how two people did it.

The question, "Where did you go to high school?" is commonly asked in St. Louis; but, "What parish did you live in?" is certainly a close second. Glenn Sartori's South City Mosaic: Life on Alaska is a charming and engagingly written memoir of his childhood on the city's South Side, where he attended church and school at St. Cecelia's Parish.Glenn details his early years in a modest brick cottage on Alaska Street, introducing us to his family, his childhood friends and his teachers. Delightful vignettes paint life in a simpler time: trading baseball cards on a friend's front porch; walking to the local theater for a Saturday movie; diagramming sentences under sister's stern gaze; learning to be an altar boy; and, experiencing a first kiss--or two.Glenn's stories stirred wonderful memories for me since I was growing up a little farther south on Grand Avenue in a very similar house, also on a street lined with sycamore trees, but in St. Stephen's Parish. The boys at St. Cecelia's were more daring than the girls at St. Stephen's, however, and I laughed out loud reading Glenn's retelling of how the boys selected their confirmation names to form slightly sacrilegious acronyms with their initials. GAS (yes, Glenn chose St. Anthony) and ASS were highly rated.I look forward to Life on South Grand, the second book in Glenn's trilogy, which will recount his high school years at the all-boys' St. Mary's. I'm sure that once again my memory will be jogged. After all, while Glenn was at St. Mary's, I was just a street-car ride away, attending the all-girls' high school, St. Elizabeth Academy.

It rekindled fond memories of our childhood. What a wonderful era in which to be born with a neighborhood centered around church and school. A time that cannot be duplicated and will never return. Our generation enjoyed the the simple pleasures; freedom to walk for blocks, day or night, without any fear, family picnics, climbing trees, playing bottle caps, singing songs of the 50's and so much more. This way of life may be lost forever but your book will always keep our wonderful childhood memories alive!

A childhood symphony By chris flesor Transported to a sweeter time, life in a city neighborhood; the fabric of family-church-friends all woven together. No one needed to say, "it takes a village," because Glenn Sartori made us feel it, beautiful and funny. I love the clarity of this childhood remembered. I did not want it to end, and I wanted more detail in the stories; they were that good! Well done and thank you, Glenn. You have shared with us your lyrical childhood symphony.

If you like your urban paranormal novels with interesting character & some hot sex, this book is for you. I really enjoyed it. I liked Lee & Connor and wanted them to end up living happily ever after. Lee, however, is framed for murdering an angel. Connor and his family of shifter, Skywalker, and Druids must clear her name & solve the case. This is a fun and fairly quick read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance.

It doesn’t make daddy happy, but he’s been willing to tolerate her foibles and the rest of the world is mostly ignorant of her existence, but when she’s accused of crossing a line and killing an angel and the human who has been her best friend, a lot of other people begin to take notice. Among them is a handsome, half dragon half skinwalker bounty hunter who is intent on claiming the bounty placed on her head by the Tribunal intent on trying her for her crimes. It should have been a simple proposition. Grab the girl, take her to the portal, turn her in to the Tribunal to stand trial and collect the bounty, but sometimes, fate has a mind of t’s own, and the best laid plans don’t always come to fruition. The Dragon’s Succubus is a steamy romantic detective story that will keep you trying to piece together the whodunit right until the end.

Growing Up Christian: Searching for a Reasonable Faith in the Heartland of America is a memoir of the author's experiences growing up with the peculiarities found in American Christianity. It has been described as "pure Americana."

BACK COVER COPYAs a young man confused by the multitude of Christian denominations and their disagreements with each other—each claiming to be the caretaker of truth—the author traces his odd and sometimes humorous journey of faith. From a little boy seeking adventure, to a denomination-hopping man crisscrossing America’s Christian landscape, Stan Williams searched for a spiritual home that embraced both the faith of his fathers and the reason of natural law.

REVIEW “Master Storyteller Stan Williams raises the genre of conversion stories to the level of an epic. Growing Up Christian’s rapid-fire chapters provides entertaining and insightful vignettes into growing up as a Protestant in the 1950s, the unfolding of his vocation to story writing and filmmaking, and his eventual entry into the Catholic Church. Intermixed with humorous anecdotes and comments, Stan gives the reader a front row seat to his intellectual and emotional struggles...It’s a fascinating page turner, an epic adventure, and a conversion story on steroids... all wrapped up into one.” (Gary Michuta, Author)

EARLY "ENDORSEMENTS"

First, Growing Up Christian is as quintessentially American a memoir as could be. It is hard to fathom that this more innocent, optimistic time was a mere few decades ago. Stan's stories are laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with everyone who grew up in the 1950s and early '60s in the Christian heartland of this country. (If you're too young to remember, it will help you understand what life as kids was like for your parents!) Second, this book is the intellectual and spiritual journey of a person so full of life and so longing for truth that he just had to bust the seams of the fundamentalist Evangelicalism he was fitted into as a child. But what he shed was not as important as what he kept holding onto for dear life -- the abiding faith of his forebears that never let him down. But wait! The-e-e-re's more! There is yet another book, making -- count 'em -- not one, not two, but three! books in one. Growing Up Christian is an apologetic, a defense, of the Christian faith and of its fullest expression in the Catholic Church. It is always loving, never shrill, and animated by tender appreciation for the gifts Stanley was given by his Evangelical upbringing, a rigorous work ethic, determination to follow the Lord wherever he leads, and deep confidence in His Providence.(Full disclosure: I helped edit this book.)

Armstrong Stan Williams takes readers on a fascinating journey through the multi-faceted stages of his life, in his memoir, Growing Up Christian. Written in a delightfully whimsical, frequently humorous or somewhat tongue-in-cheek style -- always very readable -- , it provides a wonderful account of precisely what the title conveys. As is the case with many adult converts to Catholicism (I am one, myself), Stan exhibits a deep appreciation and gratefulness for the knowledge and wisdom that he attained during his Protestant (Evangelical) years. The Catholic convert usually feels that Catholicism builds upon what was formerly learned, rather than being a rejection of it.This affection and respect for all that is true and good in Protestantism, and the spiritual riches available in it, is evident throughout the book, even when Stan critiques and disagrees with various elements in that belief-system. The following paragraph is a notable example of the style of his analyses of the anti-Catholic strain of 1950s Evangelicalism: specifically, that of his mother. Note also how it also contains a (quite justified!) critical remark about dissenting Catholics:"Some Protestants (like my mother) were afraid that Catholicism would take over America -- not by killing people (like the Communists had threatened) but by having babies who would eventually allow Catholics to dominate the democratic process. She had not yet heard of the contraceptive pill, which would be made widely available to the public in a few years. Nor did she know that Catholic women would swarm to use the pill against the Church's prohibition. Mom might have been delighted had she known what the future held."One experience he recounts was eerily similar to my own, in the same fundamentalist Baptist bookstore, about eight years after his incident. It was called the Inter-City Christian Bookstore, in Allen Park, Michigan (where I now live). It closed in the last year or so.In 1973, Stan visited this bookstore and purchased a nice, leatherbound New American Standard Bible. When he went to buy it, the cashier grimaced, opining in no uncertain terms that it wasn't a "real Bible." He tells the story of what she then said:"'The King James Bible [first published in 1611] is the only authorized version because it is the Bible that Jesus used.'"At this point there was a long period of silence as I repeated her words to myself. Finally, I burst out, 'WHO TOLD YOU THAT?'"Unruffled, she narrowed her eyes, stepped into my space, and pointed across the street to the large Inter-City Baptist Church. 'Our pastor!'"The question immediately arose in my mind, while reading, "why in the world did the bookstore sell it in the first place, then, or hire a worker who had such a low opinion of it?" Stan was gracious enough to omit that observation. The "King James Only" viewpoint is, it should be noted, believed only by a very tiny fringe group of exclusivist fundamentalists, but it does still exist, and is a prime example of the ludicrous anti-intellectualism that prevails in these circles. Stan made further (typically a bit pointed but dead-on) observations about the absurdities inherent in this view:"[I]n some sectors of Christianity there are Christians who believe that before His ascension, Jesus supervised the writing of the KJV (in Elizabethan prose), oversaw its printing on imported India paper, and approved the first edition leather bindings, before letting the Apostles organize a book signing."I particularly appreciated this story, because the first "major" Bible purchase I made was in this same store, in 1980, when I, too, bought a leatherbound New American Standard Bible, that I cherish to this day. I read most of the Bible using this volume, and made many notes in its margins. It still has the same glorious smell, too, after 35 years.I purchased mine without incident, but in the following year I made a visit back to Inter-City Christian Bookstore, with a brochure advertising a "counter-cult" ministry that I was involved in. I figured that a good Christian store like this would be happy to put it out, in the worthwhile effort to oppose the errors of non-trinitarian groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses, who denied that Jesus was God. No problem, right? Wrong! To my astonishment, I was told by the lady at the counter (possibly the same one Stan encountered, for all I know), that the bookstore couldn't put out the pamphlet because the three people pictured on the cover had beards (!!!). I couldn't believe it! Didn't Jesus Himself have a beard? I thought I was back in the late 60s again, watching my dad kick my brother out of the house simply because he had long hair. I thought all that sort of silliness was long gone by 1981. But alas, it was not.The latter chapters of the book tell the story of how Stan became convinced that the fullness of the Christian faith was to be found in the Catholic Church, via "intermediate" positions like Lutheranism. He describes exactly how he became ultimately disenchanted in the end with every form of Protestantism that he tried. The tone is more serious, yet not without a good deal of self-deprecating humor. It is also a story of the conflict between Stan and his wife Pam, who was a little slower to reach the same conclusion. She contributes significant portions to the book as well, with her own articulate and insightful writing style. The conversion story of the last part of the book would be very helpful to anyone going through the same process: especially regarding the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, or transubstantiation: an aspect of Catholic theology quite difficult for many Protestants to grasp (and widely misunderstood).Very highly recommended!DAVE ARMSTRONG (Catholic Author and Apologist, active at Patheos)

A story of a journey well worth sharing By Amazon Customer A Beautiful Account of God's GraceThere are many accounts of personal journeys that have led souls closer to God. But precious few capture our imagination, mirror the sentiments of our hearts, or put into words the remarkable reasons we are Christians. Dr. Stan Williams's memoir, however, does all that and more. Each short chapter provides a beautiful account of God's grace at work in his life and the many lives that he encounters. Hardly a page can be turned without laughing out loud or nodding over a similar experience or even blinking away a tear or two at God's tender mercy. The familiar landmarks in Dearborn and Metro Detroit will likely awaken many happy memories for anyone who has grown up there.Stan's account of his strict Protestant upbringing and the many denominations and communities he visited in his desire to know the Lord Jesus, ironically leave the reader with a remarkable sense that all Christians, regardless of their denominational barriers, share in the unity of the mystical Body of Christ. The clarity with which he articulates why he accepted some aspects of each community's teachings and struggled with others, makes some of the biggest barriers between Christians seem surprisingly small. In so many places we see God's grace in the form of an "enlightened moment" where the obstacles that had moments before seemed dark and insurmountable, suddenly become well-lit bumps in the road.Throughout the book, his wife Pam adds to the story. This makes the memoir all the more personal and heartfelt. You almost sense Stan's beloved wife looking over his shoulder as he writes--encouraging, reminding and filling in details only she could remember. After years of not being able to give a clear answer to many who have come to me because they were troubled by their encounter with Charismatic Christians who demanded they speak in tongues, it was Stan's short account of being prayed over (for the gift of tongues) that suddenly made perfect sense to me. "I don't really think I'm supposed to speak in tongues to prove the Holy Spirit is with me," he said. It was a lighthearted reminder for all of us to "Strive eagerly for the greater spiritual gifts." Stan's book was one of the best gifts I've received in some time. When I finished it, I was so thankful, spiritually lifted and encouraged...especially after Pam's Postscript.I pray that the Lord will continue to shower his graces upon Stan & Pam and their extended family. God bless them!

On Mars, the harsh climate could make any colonist turn to drugs to escape a dead-end existence. Especially when the drug is Can-D, which transports its users into the idyllic world of a Barbie-esque character named Perky Pat. When the mysterious Palmer Eldritch arrives with a new drug called Chew-Z, he offers a more addictive experience, one that might bring the user closer to God. But in a world where everyone is tripping, no promises can be taken at face value.

This Nebula Award nominee is one of Philip K. Dick's enduring classics, at once a deep character study, a dark mystery, and a tightrope walk along the edge of reality and illusion.

109 of 121 people found the following review helpful. A head trip at times, but worth the effort By Michael Battaglia Sporting one of the neatest titles in all of literature, SF or otherwise, this novel is considered one of Dick's handful of absolute masterpieces, written during his peak in the sixties. People who saw Blade Runner, went and read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and liked it enough to want to explore Dick further and came here (remove the seeing Blade Runner part and that's me) may find this book a decidely odd experience. Not outwardly psychedelic in nature but certainly dealing with altered states of conscious and the nature of reality versus our perception of it . . . if you find yourself reading it and think you're missing something, trust me you aren't alone. Probably no one other than Dick knew exactly everything that is going on in here but for the rest of us it's an interesting dilemma trying to discern his exact meaning, or our best interpretation. In the future, the earth is unbearably warm, people are being drafted to be sent to dreary colonies and Can-D is the drug of the moment, a substance which allows people to "translate" into layouts based on a doll called Perky Pat and basically experience a life that isn't theirs. Then Palmer Eldrich returns from outside the solar system with his new drug Chew-D which he claims will deliver immortality and show the nature of God . . . and then things get funny. Dick's vision of a future world is absolutely fascinating and for us low brow folks who don't get all the wacky symbolism, makes the book worth it simply for his depiction of an overheated earth, the boring spiritual desolation of the Mars colonies, the pre-cogs who determine the latest fashions, it all feels bleak and despairing but there's a sense of humor lurking in the wings and a vague feeling that something larger is going on. It starts to lose coherency toward the end as the reader begins to question reality, especially what is the nature of Palmer Eldrich (great name, by the way) and eventually you find your head starting to hurt just a bit. And it's not that bad a feeling, as it turns out. PKD books are more experienced than described and nothing here is going to really be able to convey the texture of his novels, you just have to read it for yourself. It's not perfect but it's both thought provoking and entertaining on vastly different levels and so in that sense comes highly recommended.

Quintessential Dick By Randy Stafford One of Dick's classics with virtually all his famous motifs and themes: multiple realities, chatty robots, a scheming woman, desperate colonists on Mars, gnosticism, the machine as an emblem of death, corporate and political intrigue, time travel, and pre-cognition.Industrialist and drug smuggler Leo Bulero has a problem. Mutilated cyborg Palmer Eldritch has returned unexpectedly after a ten year absence in space. Now he's threatening to undercut Bulero's business: providing a sort of commodified communion for colonists on Mars. With the elaborate playsets built around his Perky Pat dolls and with the aid of the narcotic Can-D, Bulero offers groups a pharmacological return to the Earth they've been exiled from and that is now burning up for unknown reasons. But Eldritch's Chew-Z offers a different, longer lasting trip, and one more solipistically seductive. But is Eldritch a man or the spearhead of an alien invasion? As with some of Dick's best work, the story feels oddly up to date whether it's the climatically changed Earth, the obsession with spotting commerical trends via pre-cognitives, a corrupt UN, or the talking suitcase that also happens to be a psychotherapist.Even if you're not quite sure what to make of the ending, this is one of Dick's very best novels.

By A Customer The novel depicts colonists on the planet Mars (a thinly disguised analogue for life in 1960s suburbia) who are so bored they have to take a hallucinogenic drug called Can-D to stay sane. Can-D causes a group hallucination in which several persons can participate. However, the titular Mr Eldritch, a drug pusher from outer space, comes to Mars and offers a new and more powerful hallucinogen, Chew-Z.Palmer Eldritch, a character based on an hallucination that Dick himself once experienced, is a wealthy industrialist with metal eyes, a metal hand and a metal jaw. In character and action he seems to this writer to resemble the "crippled man" of German expressionist movies and literature; who is himself physically crippled, but has almost a supernatural control over others. Examples of such characters in movies include the Professor in "Metropolis", the title character in "Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari", and the title character in Fritz Lang's "Dr Mabuse" films. More recent examples may include the title character in Kubrick's "Dr Strangelove", and the stammering, limping Dr Schreber in Alex Proyas' "Dark City".The character of Eldritch is the unforgettable centre of the novel, and is truly a terrifying presence. The effect of Eldritch's drug Chew-Z is to cause the user to enter a hallucinatory reality, apparantly of his or her own choice. However, in these realities the user is alone - no one else can enter their hallucinations except, apparantly, Palmer Eldritch. The contrast between the two drugs may be seen as an analogy of the difference between the "soft drug" marijuana and the hard drug heroin. While marijuana may be taken in company, heroin is taken alone, and the user becomes withdrawn. (Incidentally, Life Savers recently put out a type of sweet called "CHEWZ").The main character, Barney Mayerson, is obsessed with going back to his estranged wife. When he takes Chew-Z, and hallucinates that he goes back to his wife but is rejected, Eldritch reappears and goads him into taking more of the drug to try again, and again, and again. Every time Barney goes back, the universe of the hallucination degrades slightly. Palmer Eldritch begins manifesting himself in the universe. As per the title, the "stigmata" of Palmer Eldritch - his mechanical parts - begin to appear on other people - even when Barney is supposedly in the 'real" world again. This can be seen as an analogy of neurotic or compulsive behaviour, wherein the neurotic, of any kind, is caught in a loop of doing the same unfulfillable action over and over. The neurotic can even be caught in a thought loop, repeating the same fruitless thoughts again and again. The degrading of Barney's universe is a little like the effects of schizophrenia. At an advanced stage the schizophrenic may be totally locked off from the world. Rather than experience new things in the external world, the schizophrenic may become highly introverted, feeding off his or her own internal "world" forever. Eventually the internal "world" becomes more and more degraded, until nothing is left but "white noise". This conception was explored much more fully in another Dick masterpiece, "Martian Timeslip".Meanwhile, a second theme involves the religious analogies of Chew-Z. Dick seems obsessed with the theme of the taking of Chew-Z as being analogous to the partaking of Eucharist by the Catholic. Whereas the flesh of Christ causes the devotee to enter the fellowship of the church and other people, Eldritch's evil Eucharist causes the devotee to become more and more withdrawn from the "light" of other people.Added to this is the theme of stigmata. While th development of stigmata among Christians is supposed to reflect the absolute reality of the Christian God, the taker of chew-Z sees the manifestations of Eldritch all over the place - of one man, clearly not God, whose limited and apparently psychotic world view insidiously engulfs the entire universe of the user. Finally, "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" can be seen as an analogy of modern life. In the novel's future, while infinite technology has given mankind incredible achievements, its chief net effect has been to make life very dull. Most of the touted "high technology" created today is literally created to entertain us. How are we much different from a drug user - languishing in dull lives where we work day after day to make enough money to lounge in front of an expensive television on weekends, surrounded by consumer goods? One is perhaps reminded of Sergio Leone's movie, "Once Upon a Time in America", where the denizens of New York City are depicted spending their hard-earned money in lying about in an opium den watching a shadow play and taking drugs.Clearly even very rich people are there. Why develop so much technology if it is chiefly used to make us feel pleasure, in a world incresingly sterile and eventless?"The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" can undoubtedly be seen as one of Philip K Dick's masterpieces. Indeed, this writer believes it to be his greatest achievement of all. Though it could be said to be poorly written from a technical standpoint, the sheer power of his images and themes is almost overwhelming. It also tends to stay in the mind for a long time.Philip K Dick is best known for the number of recent movies made from his stories. However, no film has ever been made of this book, even though it seems ideally suited to such a medium. An expressionist style retelling of this tale, even on a low budget, could be very effective. The book itself is currently very widely available, thanks to an apparant boom in interest in the author. The current printings I am aware of are American paperbacks put out by Vintage and Milennium.Similar books to "Three Stigmata" by the same author include "Martian Timeslip", created the previous year, which explores very similar themes.
