How would he ever find the peace he so desperately needed? On a golf course in Ireland, the answer came. Thus began a ten-year quest, taking David to 290 courses throughout the British Isles. As he was about to leave on his final trip, he looked out the windshield of his car and realized where he would find his peace.A Long Walk with Sally will touch golfers, parents, and anyone who has faced the loss of a child. By asetts “A Long Walk with Sally”Written by David Clark, JRA Loving Family, Golf, and a tragic life changing event all come together in David Clark Jr’s personal story of golf and the loss of his 19 year old daughter Sally, the sweet “sunshine” of his life.As a Father of a daughter, an avid golfer and traveler to the British Isles, I could not wait to open this book. I have read many golf and travel books including the Jim Dodson story,” Final Rounds: A Father, A Son, The Golf Journey Of A Lifetime,” an experience overseas he shares with his Dad prior to his death. Yet, the thought of a man traveling overseas to walk great courses in search of peace with his daughter’s tragic death would be a perspective that I was not at all prepared for. With that understatement, I could not fight back the tears in several chapters as Mr. Clark shared his most intimate feelings and deepest hurts. Many golfers, including myself, have stood on the 18th tee at Lahinch and tried to ignore the left side of that hole, despite it being the shorter way home. No one has ever stood on that tee after 71 other very meaningful holes, on four trying golf courses and could feel the pressure Mr. Clark was feeling on that final tee box. I kept hearing the voice in my head say over and over, “FIND IT DAVID, FIND IT!” The emotional pendulum was heavy and in constant motion.Throughout the book, Mr. Clark shares his family’s struggles and his personal wishes for both his family and himself in a style convincing you that he has it covered and that he will “figure it out” with Jo and the others. The others in his life played significant roles at key times and as Mr. Clark realized on his long walk, he truly was not alone! The golf course list was very impressive and well explained in the book. Mr. Clark didn’t just rely on the “experts” and the popular two or three guide books; he literally went everywhere he felt he needed to go in his quest. I wish the two closing chapters of photos were captioned, especially the golf trip photos. Some of these shots looked familiar or enticing and some screamed out “great story” and maybe someday I will have a chance to walk in to Mr. Clark’s life and he will share one or two of them. Thank you again David for sharing this story.

Most importantly, David Clark's story of the tragic loss of his daughter Sally is a well-written and compelling account of how he and his wife Jo dealt with the sudden death of his daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. As others who have experienced the death of a child can attest, such a death is about the hardest to deal with, particularly when the death seems so senseless. David acknowledges that his faith in Christ was instrumental in pulling him through his darkest hours. At the same time, he found a unique way of working through the emotions over a period of several years. An avid and accomplished golfer, David, who had always loved playing the links courses in the British Isles, set out to play every links course in Great Britain and Ireland. This task took him several years, made more difficult in part by the continued discovery of new link course as well as by questions as to what exactly counts as a link course. When he finally achieved his goal, David had played close to 300 courses, some of them in heavy rain. Sensing that he has Sally with him every step of the way, he finally reconciles himself to Sally's death and to God's purpose in taking her.David Clark's story should prove fascinating for everyone, particularly for those who have experienced the loss of a child. Although having a love of golf is an added benefit, you don't have to be a golfer to appreciate the book.

Sally's Memory By Veronica Arnold David and Jo:When I received your book "A Long Walk With Sally", I started that afternoon reading it and could hardly put it down. Truly my heart beats with rushing sounds as I made my way through your book. At times, I would cry...well okay, many times. Losing a child could be one of the hardest things in life. We don't understand it, but God does and He does not make mistakes. Your book brought clarity to my mind that many mothers and fathers who have lost a child should get your book. I personally think it would help them with their struggles, perhaps even change their lives in a way that would glorify our Lord the way it did with the author, David Clark, Jr., who wrote this book about losing his daughter Sally, and his niece Grace, in a horrible car accident in April of 2004 due to (none other than a drunk driver). Much time and thought was given to the book and I admire David and Jo for their courage to write their life story of losing their daughter. Our hearts will forever be broken...but, God says he binds up the wounds and heals the broken-hearted, (Psalm 147:3) so with that, I have read the book and know that David and Jo have put their trust in Him along with the two ponds they build in memory of these two sweet girls and "Sallys Y", where people can go and exercise and forget their troubles of life that encamps each of us every day. Thanks for my signed copy and I will cherish it for a lifetime. I never will loan it out to anyone, because it was signed by David to me and for that alone, I appreciate it more. I give this book a 5-Star...because I went to high school with Sally's father and mother. What a special treasure that I have!!!God bless David and Jo and their two sons as they navigate through life now and for their obedience to The Lord, He will honor them with a beautiful granddaughter to love. She would never take the place of Sally...but it sure is close. I know because I have two granddaughters and are not allowed to see them. So you see, I have a broken heart too.

Long ago in ancient China, there were old masters who had miraculous skills. Even in their old age, their bodies were like iron. When they struck back, it only took one hit and the enemy was dead. Now many centuries later we no longer see these skills. The basic martial skills once taught are ignored and more “modern” day training is used instead. If these new methods are better, then why does the modern martial artist not exhibit the same skills of the old masters? The answer is simple, they have no chi skills. In this book is a 100 day plan to increase your internal strikes using the methods used by Shaolin and Wudang.

Murderers Still Loose: With Important Life and Safety Lessons (Ghastly Unsolved Murders Book 1), by Everett Walsh

About the Author During the 30 years that Everett Walsh worked as an undercover detective, he witnessed far too many crime scenes where people transformed into monsters, ravaging and killing their victims by the most heinous methods. In 2015 Everett took early retirement to follow his passion: writing. This is his first unsolved murder novella, containing ten stories of 33+ victims, some who suffered the most hideous deaths that most human minds can’t even conceive.

This could have been a book that you have read before but the author has made the stories very interesting with information I have not seen before.Additionally, the author provides advice without being preachy about how things could have gone differently in each case if people would have been more aware and careful in there action. I found this to be interesting and well though out. There are a total of ten cases that cover time periods from the late 1800s to the 2000s. I find the older stories, and there are plenty, to be interesting because in many cases I am not familiar with them. This book has some well know cases like Natalie Holloway and the Benders and some lesser known though interesting cases like Ken Mex Rex McElroy and the Keddie murders. If you are looking for a true crime book that is written a bit differently, in a positive way, then I would check this book out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and useful at the same time By Tomislav Within this book, Everett Walsh provides us with ten enthralling stories of unsolved cases. They are all quite varied - they span a few centuries, have different victims and overall bring many distinct cases to the table. I personally liked the format of this book. It has a norm for how the cases are presented and it doesn’t stray away from it. We are always introduced properly into the case, given background information and then the author continues to follow the case with detail. At the end of the cases, there are also “What we learnt” reminders that not only remind us of mistakes we or our close ones should avoid making, but also provide help with sorting out the story in our heads for all who are interested in the stories themselves.“Murderers Still Loose: With Important Life and Safety Lessons” is a worthy read, in my opinion, so I strongly suggest it to anyone in search for stories like this or tips to leading a safer life.

It's a great book, no doubt about that. But the book tells fact after fact after fact. It reads like an encyclopedia, which is why I find it difficult to doubt anything the author is stating. But again, it's a great book if your just wanting the facts. It vary rarely contains personal thoughts and feelings about the subjects. I recommend it for anyone just wanting the facts, then wanting to base their own opinions.

8 of 13 people found the following review helpful. a demonological classic and scholarly opus By Anita Fix Paul Carus's classic treatise, writ and published to great occult acclaim circa 1900, remains a much deserved classic; 350 illustrations carefully chosen alone warrant applause, but it is his highly focused text that deserves scholars' attentions and demands republication. Foremost of importance for current day readers is the extent to which the work delves far beyond the pulpish, tho non-fictive, profit-orientated goals of the majority of the Devil's historians making a buck and a name out there today (Jeffrey B. Russell, whose depictions of the late eliphas Levi as a mere flop Satanist---of which as a devout Catholic Abbe' he was strictly railing against the entirety of his miraculous life---exemplifies such). None such opinionations are within carus's exemplar work. Crucial to this review is coneying the standard of success he reaches in establishing his goal of a thorough, precise and organized historiography mapping and dilineating the crucial developments and differences amidst the varied beliefs and ideas concerning evil and its dominions and servitors, on a level worldwide in conception. Cultural relativity is and remains established throughout; no opinions are broached to instead focus strictly upon orientating the reader with The History Of The Devil And The Idea Of Evil ( the book's subtitle) with little sensationalism besides the already stranger than fiction truth of the matter. As a Romantic debauchee lusting for poetic description with the kind of wit that bites its object of desire in the middle of the back, my only complaint of such a work as Carus's lies here. Those searching for the blasphemous variety need not turn to necromancy to evoke such animated literature as some precious few remain miraculously in print ( Eliphas Levi, Montague Summers, and Grillot de Givry, respectively, all relative contemporaries of Carus---1860, 1926 & 1931---serve excellent examples). Carus however was unconcerned with novelistic delights and concentrated upon discovering underlying formations of principles and morality within a cultural context; his establishing of historical factual sources, verifiable and in most cases evident, posits him upon a high mount of scholarly regard in the lands of comparative religions.

Excerpt from The Shell Book: A Popular Guide to a Knowledge of the Families of Living Mollusks, and an Aid to the Identification of Shells Native and ForeignEvery person interested in shells has felt the need of a manual of the shell-bearing animals of sea and land, comparable to the comprehensive manuals provided for those who wish to study birds or insects or trees. Small hand-books serve as guides to the seashore, but they treat only detached portions of the great kingdom, Mollusca. What is needed for more serious study is a larger book in which the families of mollusks are arranged in their proper order, to give a general idea of the size and scope of the important genera, and their natural relationships. Such a popular guide should give precedence to the accepted English names of the families and of the individual species described, while attaching to each its scientific name. It is quite possible to give the general reader the information he desires in his own language, without sacrifice of scientific accuracy.A book of this kind must be the outgrowth of extensive acquaintance with living mollusks in their natural surroundings, or it will be as dead as the shells in a cabinet, and dry as the dust on the old shell catalogues. It must bring together as much as can be found out about the habits of the mollusks described, and the uses people make of them, if they have any economic value. Many shells have never yet been seen alive; others are practically unknown. It is astonishing how little is known about many species of mollusks. The standard literature of conchology has a limited circulation. The classics are rare and sumptuously illustrated volumes locked up in glass cases in the great libraries. These are out of date, of course. The newer treatises are expensive and very technical. Many facts of the highest interest and value are hidden away in official reports of scientific expeditions, not easily obtainable nor easily read by anyone untrained in the sciences. If I have failed in my attempt to make an interesting and useful shell book, it is not because conditions were unfavorable for my purpose. Everything and everybody worked together to help me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Celebrated nineteenth-century photographer -- and writer, actor, caricaturist, inventor, and balloonist -- Félix Nadar published this memoir of his photographic life in 1900 at the age of eighty. Composed as a series of vignettes (we might view them as a series of "written photographs"), this intelligent and witty book offers stories of Nadar's experiences in the early years of photography, memorable character sketches, and meditations on history. It is a classic work, cited by writers from Walter Benjamin to Rosalind Krauss. This is its first and only complete English translation.

In When I Was a Photographer (Quand j'étais photographe), Nadar tells us about his descent into the sewers and catacombs of Paris, where he experimented with the use of artificial lighting, and his ascent into the skies over Paris in a hot air balloon, from which he took the first aerial photographs. He recounts his "postal photography" during the 1870-1871 Siege of Paris -- an amazing scheme involving micrographic images and carrier pigeons. He describes technical innovations and important figures in photography, and offers a thoughtful consideration of society and culture; but he also writes entertainingly about such matters as Balzac's terror of being photographed, the impact of a photograph on a celebrated murder case, and the difference between male and female clients. Nadar's memoir captures, as surely as his photographs, traces of a vanished era.

When I Was a Photographer (MIT Press), by Félix Nadar

Review

A legendary book, imbued with the rogue personality of its author, finally appears in English, allowing us to wander with him through his memories of a key moment in our modernity. A vital contribution to our understanding of photography both then and now.

(Geoffrey Batchen, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand)

Eloquently nostalgic, discreetly ironic about nostalgia, these pages from another time tell us all kinds of witty, often oblique tales of photography -- from the air, underground, of the dead and the living, in and out of history. Nadar was many other things as well as a photographer but once he had started he never stopped being one, even when he wasn't using a camera. He hasn't stopped now. The deftly translated words of this book offer pictures that prove it.

(Michael Wood, Princeton University)

Nadar's book has finally been translated into English.... [M]any of the vignettes in When I Was a Photographer are infused with his rebellious zest.

(The Wall Street Journal)

This compact volume gives the sense of being present for the invention of photography…. [Nadar] writes engagingly of photographing a dead man and meeting a bee tamer, and we are charmed.

(San Francisco Chronicle)

When I Was a Photographer brims with Nadar's wisdom on a multitude of subjects and subtleties of creative work

(Brain Pickings)

Excerpt from Florence Nightingale: A BiographyThis book could not have been written without constant reference to, and some quotation from, the letters and papers published in Sir Edward Cook's excellent two-volume biography of Florence Nightingale. (Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1913.) I am deeply indebted to Messrs. Macmillan for their kind permission to make these references and quotations.I should add that since the publication of my book in America and while the proofs of this English edition were in the press, Miss I. B. O'Malley's biography of Florence Nightingale, written with the assistance of members of the Nightingale family, has been published. Miss O'Malley's book (which does not go beyond the Crimean War) contains much interesting and hitherto unknown detail but, after reading it with great enjoyment, I do not find that I need alter anything that I have written here. Indeed, the new official biography strengthens my previous impressions and, in particular, emphasizes what a very real struggle it was, at the outset, for Florence Nightingale to free herself from dependence upon ordinary human longings such as to please and be loved by her family and her friends.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Published 1891.The topics range fromAlexandre Dumas, Mr. Stevenson's works, Homer and the Study of Greek, The Last Fashionable Novel, Thackeray, Dickens,toAdventures of Buccaneers, The Sagas, Charles Kingsley, etc, etc.Who but myself has a taste for old essays? I hadn't even heard of Andrew Lang before I started searching for "essays" in the Kindle store. These essays are fine- almost boyish in their enthusiasm and playfulness- "The Last Fashionable Novel" is a mash up of Ouida and James Fenimore Cooper, the point of which I'm sure I missed- but I still liked the parody. His essays of Buccaneers and Sagas- well, who but an overgrown boy would write essays on buccaneers and sagas?:".. For the wise world, which reads newspapers all day and half the night, does not care much for books, still less for good books, least of all for old books. You can make no money out of reading Sagas: they have nothing to say about stocks and shares, nor about Prime Ministers and politics. Nor will they amuse a man, if nothing amuses him but accounts of races and murders, or gossip about Mrs. Nokes's new novel, Mrs. Stokes's new dresses, or Lady Jones's diamonds. The Sagas only tell how brave men--of our own blood very likely--lived, and loved, and fought, and voyaged, and died, before there was much reading or writing, when they sailed without steam, travelled without railways, and warred hand-to-hand, not with hidden dynamite and sunk torpedoes. But, for stories of gallant life and honest purpose, the Sagas are among the best in the world."

This groundbreaking novel, set in New York City during the 1990s, is guaranteed to be unlike any literary experience you have ever had. Acclaimed Puerto Rican author Giannini Braschi has crafted this creative and insightful examination of the Hispanic-American experience, taking on the voices of a variety of characters ― painters, poets, sculptors, singers, writers, filmmakers, actors, directors, set designers, editors, and philosophers ― to draw on their various cultural, economic, and geopolitical backgrounds to engage in lively cultural dialogue. Their topics include love, sex, food, music, books, inspiration, despair, infidelity, jobs, debt, war, and world news. Braschi’s discourse winds throughout the city’s public, corporate, and domestic settings, offering an inside look at the cultural conflicts that can occur when Anglo Americans and Latin Americans live, work, and play together. Hailed by Publishers Weekly as “a literary liberation,” this energetic and comical novel celebrates the contradiction that makes contemporary American culture so wonderfully diverse. Praise for Yo-Yo Boing!: “Known for their radical linguistic and structural inventions, as well as for their overt political thrust…Giannina Braschi’s postmodern poetry collection Empire of Dreams and her ground-breaking bilingual novel Yo-Yo Boing! are an “in-your-face assertion” of the vitality of Latino culture in the US.” - The New York Daily News “The novel, evoking the name of the island’s famous comedian Yo-Yo Boing!, is neither fully written in English or Spanish, but rather sashays between the two languages much the way Puerto Rico itself sashays between two cultures, two identities, and two languages.” - The San Juan Star “Braschi’s novel is...a literary liberation. The interlocutors...yo-yo from subject to subject: writers, films, sex, childhood, family and ultimately Puerto Rican artistic expression in New York City. Allusions come helter-skelter, as Fellini, Pee-Wee Herman, Nabokov and even Columbia University Latin Americanist Jean Franco are invoked, celebrated, and derided. Braschi’s melange of prose and poetry... is admirable for its energy (and) its experimental format.” - Publishers Weekly

Review The Spanglish literary tour de force now available in English translation by Tess O’Dwyer “An ‘in-your-face assertion’ of the vitality of Latino culture in the U.S.” --New York Daily News “Exciting—as much a performance piece as a novel.” --Harold Augenbraum, National Book Foundation “A force to reckon with.” --Ilan Stavans, The FSG Book of Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry “The best demonstration yet of Braschi’s extraordinary virtuosity… It is also a very funny novel, a novel of argumentative conversations that cover food, movies, literature, art, the academy, sex, memory, and everyday life. It is a book that should be performed as well as read.” --Jean Franco, Columbia University “A rush of gloriously nuanced sentences that teeter between the grotesque and burlesque…the text transmutes poetry into novel, into screenplay, dialogue, and by extension to more and sometimes unidentified variants.” --Doris Sommer, Harvard University “It bristles with lively...literary conversation.” --Kirkus Reviews “It’s what I call superb writing. It's as much a performance piece as it is a novel.” --Barney Rosset, The Evergreen Review “A literary liberation.” --Publishers Weekly “Braschi writes beautiful[ly]...playing with word forms in a musical, rhythmic way…reflecting the way language is actually used.” –-Library Journal

And this one certainly demonstrates the power of her ambition. This is an important post-modernist work that attempts to grapple with the issues generated by the confusing hybridity that shapes the contemporary Puerto Rican world. Some of the reading is tedious, and although some parts are humorous, it is not the knee-slapping farce that some readers claim it is. But one cannot doubt Braschi's enormous talent. She's an intelligent, witty writer, clearly in command of her craft who takes risks. ---JL Torres-Padilla, UPR, Cayey

By eatquestnyc I just re read this book having gotten back into Ms Braschi after finishing her mind blowing new book United States of Banana. So glad that I did! It held up and then some. Her humor runs deep, is very dark and also makes you just giggle. Sometimes I felt like she was expressing thoughts that I assumed were only in my head but she could articulate them and give them great meaning. Ha. Yes, you have to concentrate but how lovely to do that again in this age of the quick light fix and sound bites. I don't think there are writers at present who are doing what she does, capturing the social and intellectual scene of the time and thinking in a manner that is passionate, moving and so far outside any box I could even dream of. She challenges the reader and also kind of says - hey c'mon, this will be a blast. Read it. Have a great time.

This piece is so original, stirring and emotionally gripping that I have recommended it to friends and family. You don't have to be a major in Latin American Literature to make the most of this novel. You have to have a sense of humor and fierce concentration. It's a fast talking book, one that will linger in my imagination for a long time to come.

"In Hebrew," Brenda Miller writes in these lyrical, lush personal essays, "the word for God means I am what I am becoming." In this linked collection, Miller takes us on a journey from the safety of a 1960s Jewish childhood through the hazards of a young womanhood populated by shamans and rough men, and down the lonely road home to wisdom. Confronting a drunken lover on a boat far from shore, hitchhiking the Bright Angel trail through the Grand Canyon alone, subsisting on dried fruit in the forests of Northern California—Miller becomes an Everywoman in these deeply meditative stories of danger, independence, and deliverance. Brenda Miller is the author of four essay collections, including Listening Against the Stone (Skinner House Books, 2012) and Season of the Body (Sarabande Books, 2002). She also coauthored Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining, and Publishing Creative Nonfiction (McGraw Hill, 2012) and The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World (Skinner House Books, 2012). Her work has received six Pushcart Prizes. She is a professor of English and director of graduate studies at Western Washington University and serves as editor-in-chief of the Bellingham Review. Who You Will Become, by Brenda Miller

Review "Anything that spins has, paradoxically, at its core, something quite still," writes Brenda Miller in Who You Will Become, an elegant, unflinching meditation on desire and belonging. Essay by essay, section by mosaic section, in radiant, sensual prose, Miller gazes deep into a troubled past to reveal moments of grace within buttermilk donuts, spring water, and the shedding bark of a eucalyptus. Who You Will Become is a portrait of hard-won wisdom, a woman at peace with how far she has come and what it has taken to get there--a master essayist at the top of her game." --Harrison Candelaria Fletcher, author of Presentimiento: A Life In Dreams Miller's most compressed and artfully woven assemblage yet: three parts, twenty pieces, one inspired and oracular whole....."No straight line between here and there, between past and future; instead, many small rifts open between where you stand now and where you are trying to go."  In other words, this is how you make a life, and this is how you write a lyric essay, both at once.  Miller not only traces who she has become; she teaches by lyric example how to write "your way out, [how to] find the familiar stones, the ones that can lead you home." --Julie Marie Wade, author of Wishbone: A Memoir in Fractures and Small Fires: Essays "But appetites, I think, are boundless and wholly unruinable," Brenda Miller writes in her collection of short essays, Who You Will Become. Each slice of life and contemplation--from early childhood, adolescence, college years, and the present--is full of her unsatiable appetite for observation, honesty, and the body's knowledge.  --Sheila Bender, founder of writingitreal.com, author of A New Theology: Turning to Poetry in a Time of Grief.

About the Author Brenda Miller teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing and the MA in English Studies at Western Washington University. By Nancoise Imagine the lyric essay as spin art: a burst of memory, a pinwheel of motion and grace, a collage of images twirled into figurative arabesques. In this collection of brief, poetic essays, Brenda Miller paints the exodus from childhood, the centrifugal force of yearning to become who we must become. Spinning swiftly through moments of solitude, separation, sadness, and the sacred, Who You Will Become accumulates, each bright drop part of a shining journey.

By Sara Stamey A powerful and meditative mosaic of life passages, small events that, assembled, create a moving portrait of the writer as a young woman moving into her adult self. Miller's prose, as always, is luminous and magical. I found pieces of myself here, too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book with lots to interest By Julie Haigh This is such a great idea for a book and just the sort of thing I love to read. I love all the photos included and I like the background info to the interviews rather than just the articles themselves. The author goes behind the scenes interviewing a few stars from radio/TV/personalities from the 70s. Photos are included, also photos of letters from the personality/agent/newspaper report etc. There are also a few amusing little quips thrown in. An interesting and entertaining little book. The interviewees are not just any Tom, Dick or Harry-not unknowns-there are mentions from big names such as Noel Edmonds, Tony Blackburn, Alan Freeman, Ann Aston, Esther Rantzen Gilbert O'Sullivan, Austin Mitchell-Calendar on ITV, Batley Variety Club-a place quite near me where my parents used to go every Saturday night to watch the stars of the day. Having really enjoyed Graham Higson's book ‘How Much for a Little Screw’ where he tells us many anecdotes from behind the counter in a hardware store-now Graham is going back in time and exchanging his smock for a 'cool' leather jacket and telling us what goes on behind the scenes with the celebrities. It makes excellent reading. A real treasure trove of interest for me! There's so much in it! Lots of fascinating facts and figures. On the amazon listing, there are ‘officially’ 84 pages. On a reasonably small text size I actually got 134 pages/turn overs on my Kindle Fire HDX so there was more material than I was expecting-lots of photos, letters, a nice touch getting their autograph in his autograph or visitor's book as he calls it and for him to show pics of every star's signing who he had interviewed. There are lots of snippets involving both the celebs interviewed and others who happened to be there. This is a very interesting piece put-together by Graham Higson, from his time as a freelance writer/reporter. It's taken from his audio tapes of celebrity interviews, letters, photos and magazine and newspaper articles he wrote at the time. A piece of history yet so many of these names will still be recognisable.
