Growing up is rarely easy. Somehow it doesn’t get easier when you are fifty with a litter of children and ex-partners scattered around the world. None of that worries languid Australian Gil Maddy as he navigates his car-crash career as a half-hearted hotelier armed only with an unconvincing smile and an often inadvertent tendency to give people a fair go. His past is safely tied up in not altogether neat packages left in his meandering wake. He never looks back; why should he? He always moves on after a year or two, no worries. That is until he meets an eccentric elderly Englishman on the ferry between Dunkirk and Dover. There is something about Charlie Adlam’s stoic stickability that launches Gil on a chaotic trajectory around the world and ultimately through his past. Mind you, that doesn’t make anyone take him any more seriously, least of all his editor or his new next-door neighbour. But then growing up is rarely easy, especially with a family like Gil’s.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A bloody good read By QuinceD What a read! Fear of Staying is a constant string of mishaps, bumblings-along, and generally surviving what seems to be a well-disorganised life.Gil Maddy, the main character and narrator, takes the reader through the course of his younger years in Australia and then into hotel middle-management in Europe. He is portrayed as an awkward or confused, almost Fawlty-Towers-like character who gets out of scrape after scrape with liberal supplies of humour, and a super-relaxed personality. But after telling of three marriages, which produce six children, Gil then takes the reader into some revealing, poignant moments, periods of his life that forged his personality—and to me, that is what the book is really about, and I loved it for that. This came out further in the last three chapters. There is plenty of exaggerated good humour and characters galore, some likeable, some detestable.Being Australian myself, and gay, and old, I could well picture two characters, Joe and Bill, living the life they did in Queensland, and the father-figure influence they had on young Gil Maddy. The story, well supplied with Australian idioms, takes the reader to the world, and through many situations. It’s told light-heartedly, yet portrays a deeper narrative. In a way, Fear of Staying is about the larrikin, Gil Maddy, but more significantly it’s about relationships that survive, and relationships that falter. It’s a romp; it’s has its serious moments; and it’s a bloody good read.
