Excerpt from My Four Years in GermanyI am writing what should have been the last chapter as the foreword of this series of articles, because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colours but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms.I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. 11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Imperial Germany through American eyes By Girl Friday Reader Until I googled the author, I never would have guessed Gerard's hatred for Germany. Over the nine decades since WWI, Kaiser Wilhelm II and Germany have been scapegoats for the cause of WWI. Certainly Imperial Germany shouted the loudest, but WWI was caused by many other factors. Despite this, if you're looking for a book covering the last year before WWI and into 1917 in Germany, this is a pretty nice book. It grows a trifle tedious as the author writes chapter after chapter about the Prisoner's of War, but it's well-written. Free copies are available on the internet if you aren't keen on purchasing a hard copy.

My Four Years in Germany By JOSEPH REID I found this book to be an extremely informative period piece covering a very important time in European and American history. It is the memoirs of the American ambassador to Germany before and during WWI. The description of court life, the political scene and the lives of normal people during the last years of royalty rule in Europe is exceptional. Additionally because of his position as the main negotiator between President Wilson and the Kaiser's goverment the book allows us to see the reactions and counterreactions to events like the sinking of the Luisitania. The author's background as a former justice of the New York Supreme Court provides great insight into the grand international debate on the legality of unconditional submarine warfare that Germany introduced during the war.The true root cause of WWI is still a subject to debate. The author's view is the need of the Kaiser and the ruling Junker aristocracy needed the war. The Kaiser to capture the glory his father garnered in the wars of 1870's and the Junkers to maintain control of the populous against trade unions and socialism.The actions of Americans living in Germany before America's entry into the conflict and the reaction of the US Goverment are also interesting. If an American criticized our goverment publicly in Germany he would revoke their passport.On the theory that if you don't agree with the goverment you should not have her protection. I wonder what he would have done to Jane Fonda when she posed on antiaircraft guns in North Vietnam!The author covers various topics chapter by chapter and because of the inconnection of events there is some repetition but he acknowledges this and points the reader to the other siginificant chapter.In all an excellent work!

Unique Perspective By Mike DePue, OFS The author, who lived to see not only WWII but the first year of the Korean War, here provides the highly subjective WWI bird's eye view of a feisty insider. (Written just before his death, My First Eighty-Three Years in America provides a retrospective consideration.)The book under review was written "because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war." (p vii) Chapter IV, "Militarism in Germany and the Zabern Affair," is key to understanding Gerard's point of view. Throughout the book, he would inveigh against "the harsh dominion of the conquest-hungry Prussians" (p. 206) and contend that "Germany is not ruled in war time by the civilian power." (p. 358) He writes of a Prussian general who "made a speech in which he extolled the advantages of hate and said that there was nothing like getting up in the morning after having passed a night in thoughts and dreams of hate." (p. 308) Without providing evidence, he feared "the many spies not only in my own Embassy but also in the State Department." (p. 253)Gerard felt that Germany greatly misread American intentions; "the Germans believed that President Wilson had been elected with a mandate to keep out of war at any cost, and that America could be insulted, flouted and humiliated with impunity." (p. 364) This gave the controlling Prussian military carte blanche to "needlessly make war, believe in war for war's sake or take up the profession of arms as a national industry.) (p. 402)An interesting sidelight is that an American apparently could travel freely without a passport in the early twentieth century. With the outbreak of the First World War, however, "passports had become a necessity. All of the Embassy force and all the volunteers that I could prevail upon to serve, even a child of eleven..., were taking applications of the Americans who literally in thousands crowded... in front of the Embassy." (p. 143)Amid the important points that the author asks us to consider appear some asides that can only be considered quirky. An example: "The influence of diet on national character should not be under-estimated. Meat-eating nations have always ruled vegetarians." (p. 57)
