About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Light Trollope By A Customer Ayala's Angel is much lighter and more lyric than many of Trollope's novels. Ayala is a dreamer, and Trollope wants us to respect her for that. The pace and the humor are typical Trollope. I enjoyed it very much, though it's hardly his most profound commentary.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A delightful Trollope experience! By Tracy Marks To contradict what one reviewer said, this volume ISBN 0192817477, 694 pages NOT not the only third of three volumes; it's the entire novel of Ayala's Angel, which is one of my favorites - and I've read nearly three dozen Trollope novels. In this one his heroine is younger than most of his heroines, and lost in the romantic ideal, to the detriment of learning to love who is in front of her. But as he so often does, Trollope excels in taking us into his heroine's mind, viewing life from her perspective, while creating other fully believable characters as well. This novel is a delight!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a merry tale of love and property By Athenaesq As always, Trollope's view of romance is firmly rooted in common sense. Two young people may love each other, but what are they to live on? Especially enjoyable here is the character of Sir Thomas Tringle--millionaire investor, kind-hearted uncle, and frustrated father convinced he has the most foolish children in the world.

A new, expanded 20th-anniversary edition of the ground-breaking memoir Little Rivers: Tales of a Woman Angler by Margot Page. The continuing chronicles of her evolution from reluctant student to passionate angler to married, angling young mother, to divorced, desk-bound angler are featured in this new, expanded edition of Little Rivers (first published in 1995). “This splendid collection of essays, reprinted from periodicals like the New York Times, Rod & Reel, and Trout, is remarkable especially because Page is able to be lyrical while writing matter-of-fact prose. The book’s charm is enhanced by [her] personal history.” — Publishers Weekly, 1995 edition of Little Rivers With this new edition, Margot Page continues her strong, evocative presence – a female presence – in the canon of fly-fishing literature. In the 17 essays in this eloquent, acclaimed book, Page invites us to her home river, Vermont’s marble-banked Battenkill, to Cape Cod saltwater fishing for striped bass, to Montana's big waters, to the wild Alaskan landscape, and most compellingly to the passages that run through her life and echo our own. Her new personal essays also include a rare peek at the early years of the national nonprofit Casting for Recovery, of which she is a founding member. The book also features the exquisite watercolors by Anton Stetzko, presented in full-color for the first time. 10% of all proceeds from the sale of the new Little Rivers will be donated to Casting for Recovery, a national nonprofit organization that provides free retreats around the U.S. helping women with breast cancer through the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. “The kind of lucidity, wit, and passion that makes writing that endures ... Margot Page has the freshest, most original eye fly-fishing literature has been blessed with in years.” — novelist W.D. Wetherell “One of our most respected angling writers ... Margot Page can’t write an ungraceful sentence. I’ll take this elegant book any day.” — Fly Rod & Reel Magazine "In essays both witty and moving, Page invites the reader to join her as she revels in the sport and the natural world as an angler, a woman, a mother, and a remarkable storyteller.” — Feminist Bookstore News “This gorgeously illustrated, tight-knit little collection of essays is a joyous book, full of rich generational dimensions, and informed throughout by the life of water. The essays range widely and are full of wonderful anecdotes.” — poet John Engels

I found myself remembering sensations and moments, from my own life transitions, long forgotten feelings and memories were renewed.

By elleno This is one of those rare books that will leave you longing to learn the art of fly fishing - but it is more than just about the river. Author Margot Page crafts her words and sentences into such illuminating scenery that you are with her in the water, seeing what she sees and feeling a profound and deep connection to nature. Her prose is beautiful, her insights are refreshing, but most of all I love the story of how she grew from a young newlywed into a mother, and ultimately a founder and advocate for Casting for Recovery. Gorgeous illustrations in each of the chapter openings.

By Amazon Customer Luminous writing about landscape and Vermont in particular. Fly fishing is not a world I know, but the grace of it has always struck me. This book is a fascinating perspective on breaking into this all male world and its conventions. The author uses her discovery and burgeoning love for the sport to explore many aspects of her life. At times, the book reminded me of Helen Macdonald's 'H is for Hawk' but with more lyricism and humor.

My only problem was there were a few small editing errors that got missed. If you enjoy hearing the stories of creeps and the like, you'll enjoy it. If you're easily triggered or squicked out, please don't read it, I'd hate for you to upset yourself.A more detailed review can be found at opinionated-cheapskate.tumblr.com

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hindsight is good By barbaraje Firstly, I had the wrong idea of what this book was about. I thought it would be a humorous book. It is actually true little stories that people have sent in of creepy, crazy, or just plain odd situations they had been in. As soon as I realized there were going to be no punch lines, I was engrossed by the stories. They're the type of happenings where you say "We'll remember this in ten years, and laugh" .

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Reading! By Jamie T. Loved it, just wish there were more installments and more stories in the first one. The only other thing I'd say is maybe add a table of contents to further additions so that the reader knows when the book is finished. I thought my computer had frigged up until it dawned on me that it just wasn't scrolling anymore because I'd reached the end.

The main focus in the beginning and ending of this very short work is to get you to click on a link that takes you outside of the Amazon system promising a free ebook download. But there is no such ebook. Be careful, Seems they might be trying to simply capture your email in violation of Amazon Guidelines and/or download something on to your computer from an outside link once you click on it without you knowing. No credibility. The publisher simply copied word for word the beginning of another Author's Biography and inserted their own pen name. Very unethical and clearly trying to mislead people about their qualifications.

One woman's mythic search for self-realization in a distant tomorrow... Her sensuality was at the core of her world, her quest beyond the civilized stars. Aristocrat. Outcast. Picara. Slave. Ruler. "Engrossing characters in a marvelous adventure." - Charles N. Brown, Locus Magazine "The amazing and erotic adventures of the most beautiful courtesan in tomorrow's universe" - Frederik Pohl "The best single example of prostitution used in fantasy is Janet Morris' Silistra series... Estri's character is most like that of Ishtar who describes herself as "'a prostitute compassionate am I'" because she "symbolizes the creative submission to the demands of instinct, to the chaos of nature ...the free woman, as opposed to the domesticated woman". Linking Estri with these lunar and water symbols is not difficult because of the moon's eternal virginity (the strength of integrity) links with her changeability (the prostitute's switching of lovers). [...] Morris strengthens the moon imagery by having Estri as a well-keepress because wells, fountains, and the moon as the orb which controls water have long been associated with fertility, [...] In a sense, she is like the moon because she is apparently eternal, never waxing or waning except in her pursuit of the quest; she is the prototypical wanderer like the moon and Ishtar. She is the eternal night symbol of the moon in opposition to the Day-Keepers [...] At her majority (her three hundredth birthday), she is given a silver-cubed hologram letter from her mother, containing a videotape of her conception by the savage bronzed barbarian god from another world. [...] If Estri's mother then acts as a bawd, willing her lineage as Well-Keepress to her daughter, then Estri's great-grandmother Astria as foundress of the Well becomes a further mother-bawd figure when she offers her prophetic advice in her letter: "Guard Astria for you may lose it, and more. Beware of one who is not as he seems. Stray not in the port city of Baniev ...look well about you, for your father's daughter's brother seeks you". Having no brother that she knows of does not stay Estri from undertaking the heroic quest of finding her father." - Anne K. Kaler, The Picara: From Hera to Fantasy Heroine

By J&R Michaels I was given an ARC of High Couch of Silistra by Janet Morris last week and just completed reading it.In this first book of High Couch of Silistra (of four) readers follow an aristocratic woman named Estri in her quest for self-realization on a world far from Earth that has suffered an ecological disaster. This is not a book for beginning readers, readers under 13, nor for people who only read books whose politics they agree with. It won't please haters of any sort: man-haters, woman-haters, or haters of the human race. High Couch of Silistra is about sex, power, the genetic bases of behavior, all set in a universe where a powerful mind can change the future.. This is a book for intelligent people who like a rollicking, challenging adventure that explores all the facets of power and interpersonal relationships. Oh, and I received an Advance Readers Copy. Now that these things are said, here is a bit about the story, and it's a great one. Estri is as woman of noble birth on a world where reproduction is difficult, birthrates are low, and consequently women who can become pregnant are very powerful. When she comes of age, Estri's dead mother sends her a message: find your father. And off she goes, leaving her family's stronghold for a strange land full of peril and violence, with only her precognitive gifts and her status to protect her. She encounters adventures that include violence against men and women, betrayal, death... sex and love.High Couch of Silistra tackles highly charged issues of sexuality but is not pornographic. Rather, it is thoughtful. HCoS explores philosophies and belief systems very different from ours -- yet its mythic basis is very like ours. And an extra bonus is the included glossary that I had to refer to many times. Best of all, this story is the adventures of a roguish female hero who isn't afraid to confront the truths about being human. I loved it and can't wait to read the second volume in this quartet.Rhonda M

As one would expect from Janet Morris there is a lot more to this story than a simple science fiction tale. Firstly the protagonist is a woman, and a strong one at that. Estri is not your screaming maiden waiting to be rescued. She’s a feisty woman, who knows her worth, knows her skills, and her failings and above all she knows herself.Estri is more than a woman of pleasure – for on her world this is no shameful profession. As Well Keepress she is much sought after, and highly skilled, but she is also teacher, student, lover, friend, fighter, diplomat, businesswoman, a slave, mistress and so much more.Silistra is a world of contrasts – its people long-lived, its terrain in places inhospitable and its morals unusual. Fertility is everything in a world where the people rarely breed successfully. Duty, or Chaldra is everything – be that duty to oneself, one’s people, or the world in general.. A world misunderstood by the others, but attractive for many reasons, not least its Well Women must stand for its uniqueness and protect its beliefs. In many ways Estri is Silistra – wise, with hidden dangers, intriguing, alluring, complex and misunderstood.Duty, power, sex, the complexities of relationships between men and women, and how they can change, fate, courage, loyalty, betrayal, personal journeys, fear, and adventure fill every chapter. The sex is not overdone, considering the context and although there is violence that too speaks of the power play which is core. The world building, as with Morris’s other novels, is rich, complex and totally believable. For the duration of the tale Silistra is real. The characters, too, are a mix of good and bad, but no way clear cut. These are living, breathing characters with all that entails. This is not a book for those of a faint heart or who cannot see deep within a tale for what lies therein. It’s a book to make the reader think. It's a book of great stature, and storytelling of the finest sort. Of course it’s also a book for those who seek a heady adventure beyond the stars.I couldn't put it down.

In early 1929, Shabtai and Naomi Levy escaped from the small town of Cizre, Turkey. With a two-month-old baby and Shabtai's mother, they journeyed on foot to Jerusalem. Illegally crossing Jacob's Ford Bridge over the Jordan River from Syria to Palestine, they eventually reached Jerusalem. There, they raised thirteen children while surviving war and hardship. Their saga highlights love, faith, hope, and most of all, the celebration of life. This is their story of love, courage, perseverance, and sacrifice as told by their twelfth child as she collected from the memories and reflections of their children.

Review "Riveting, heart-warming, appetite-making saga of a family's love of Zion and the tight bonds of a large, traditional, Sephardic family during the early decades of the modern State of Israel. I read this book with great enjoyment in two sittings, appreciating the power of parents to instill love and feeling my own longing for the adventure and purpose of life in Israel."  Rabbi Elie Kaplan Spitz"This book touches the heart and the soul with a story of shining humanity and the illustration of a precious, and hopefully,  indelible  culture. It provokes self and social analysis, subtly disclosing the richness of humility."  Rita Feblowicz

The section on Van Gaal is much stronger, perhaps because he is much more of a personality? It seems Moyes might be more vanilla in real life as well as on the page. The author has a much more literary style than I am used to with newspaper reporters. His writing took some getting used to, but overall is really good.

Under the pseudonym S.S. Van Dine, Wright has booked passage on what would be the luxury liner’s disastrous final crossing. He claims to be interviewing celebrity passengers, but the reporter is actually investigating rumors that the ship is ferrying an illegal cache of weapons to aid the British war against Germany. His investigation is put on hold when three German stowaways are discovered and then ― in an unexpected and violent twist ― killed. Wright, also the writer of mystery novels, joins forces with lovely, über-competent Detective Philomina Vance to solve the crime. With threats of a torpedo attack hanging over the ship, the pair races to unmask the murderer and derail a conspiracy to take down the Lusitania.

The Lusitania Murders (Disaster Series), by Max Allan Collins

Amazon.com Review Historical mysteries grounded in fact and embellished with fiction are Collins's forte, and here he takes the World War I sinking of a great Cunard liner as the canvas for a rollicking story of murder, espionage, and mayhem. Willard Wright, a critic, journalist and mystery writer (under the pseudonym of S.S. Van Dine), is supposed to be interviewing the rich and famous who are making the journey to England on the luxurious ship. But what he's really doing is investigating the sub rosa shipment of munitions by a government supposedly neutral in the European conflict. Aided by a female version of Philo Vance, Van Dine's series hero, Wright unmasks a couple of spies and a murderer and finds the munitions in plenty of time to carry on a decidedly modern affair with the beautiful and sexy Pinkerton agent, but, alas, too late to save the Lusitania from a German U-boat. A skillfully told story with all the verisimilitude and historical accuracy of earlier books in this captivating series, which gave the Titanic, Hindenburg, and Pearl Harbor disasters the same lively treatment. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly In this traditional, pre-World War I mystery, prolific Collins (The Pearl Harbor Murders, etc.) emulates the memoir-like writing style of S.S. Van Dine, a mystery writer and art critic popular in the Jazz Age, and casts him as a journalist-cum-amateur sleuth. Humbled by the need to make a buck, the ever disdainful Van Dine agrees to board the Lusitania in order to interview the ship's wealthiest passengers and investigate rumors that the opulent ocean liner is carrying munitions. While touring the vessel, Van Dine and his guide surprise three stowaways who may be German saboteurs. When one of them turns up dead, Philo Vance, the ship's dimpled detective, takes over and enlists Van Dine as her assistant and lover. Two corpses later, Philo and Van Dine deduce there's a traitor in their midst who is most likely one of the vessel's most esteemed passengers. Collins, author of several screenplays and movie/TV tie-in novels (In the Line of Fire; Road to Perdition), ably weaves a well-paced, closed-environment mystery reminiscent of Agatha Christie, but the acerbic Van Dine, who scorns popular fiction and politics, will grate on readers' nerves. Nevertheless, the author succeeds in resurrecting a long-forgotten writer and re-imagining the Lusitania's final voyage.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author Max Allan Collins is the New York Times bestselling author of Road to Perdition and multiple award-winning novels, screenplays, comic books, comic strips, trading cards, short stories, movie novelizations, and historical fiction. He has scripted the Dick Tracy comic strip, Batman comic books, and written tie-in novels based on the CSI, Bones, and Dark Angel TV series; collaborated with legendary mystery author Mickey Spillane; and authored numerous mystery novels including the Quarry, Nolan, Mallory, and the bestselling Nathan Heller historical thrillers. His additional Disaster series mystery novels include The Titanic Murders, The Hindenburg Murders, The Pearl Harbor Murders, The London Blitz Murders, and The War of the Worlds Murder.

Cleary Author Max Allan Collins is adept at transforming raw historical research and tried-and-true mystery novel techniques into an entertaining and thought-provoking adventure in "The Lusitania Murders." I highly enjoyed the character of Wright aka Van Dine and his adventures with the ship's most interesting and famous first class passengers. This is a window into the art, literary and popular culture of the Jazz Age, through figures such as a Elbert Hubbard, Vanderbilt, Frohman and Kessler, among others. WWI politics lurk in the shadows, fueling the pseudo-reality of this Agatha Christie-like mystery. The author impresses with his breadth of knowledge and does a good job of enlivening and condensing the voluminous research into a highly readable novel. I pulled this book off the shelf knowing nothing of Collins or the Lusitania and was highly impressed.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good Mystery By Princess The author William Huntington Wright, traveling under his alias S.S.Van Dine (Wright and Van Dine are real people as are most of the characers in this book), is undercover for the British as a journalist on the last voyage of the Lusitania to discover if it is carrying munition for the enemy.Along the way, he interviews the likes of Alfred Vanderbilt, Charles Forham and Elbert Hubbard. As expected, murders and espionage soon become all too common occurrences and Van Dine with the help of a female Pinkerton agent is rapidly engaged in the investigation. The Lusitania Murders, judging by its author's notes (def. worth reading) is well-researched but lacking a tightness and suspense that keeps the reader flipping pages.

By Hal 'Chisaiyama' Shaver As expressed previously in reviews of these "Disaster Mysteries" I have a penchant not just for mysteryies in general but most especially for historical mysteries involving real life heroes and villains acting as they might have done, not just as we know they did as in a non-fiction story. This also extends to the "alternate reality" type of historical fiction/fantasy but we'll save that for another review, perhaps of Keyes' "Age of Unreason" series. This entry in Collins' exquisitie series was just as captivating as all the rest with real life author S. S. Van Dine along for the ride (though like CHarteris in Hindenburg he had preiviously sailed on the big Lucy but wasn't really on the ill fated trip itself). A distaff version of his detective in the form of one Philomina Vance is the sleuth of the piece, something quite improbable for that era but impulsively intriguing nonetheless.Once again Collins masterfully weaves what is known about this disaster together with what might have been, tosses in a few murders that didn't actually take place and comes up with a page turner to keep even the most jaded mystery fan entertained. I fall into that category I can assure you although I am chagrined to say that I am so far 0 for 4 in penetrating the webs of intrigue he has woven around these disasters. I will say that in each case the actual villain of the piece was on my list of suspects but not at the top.As in each of the previous three volumes Collin and his staff's research has paid off in meticulously accurated depictions of the decor, surroundings and viands available to the Lucy's passengers. This particular tale involves, stowaway saboteurs, turncoats and out and out thieves as well as the most varied and eclectic cast of characters one could possibly imagine travelng as first class passengers on the world's (at that time at least) most prestigious luxury liner.Give this serie a try if you like period pieces and in particular period piece mysteries with real life settings. And as I have said in other reviews, the beauty of this "series" is that it is not sequential in any manner. You can pick any book you like to start and go from disaster to to disaster as you please. Myself I'm a little anal and I like to read a series in it's published order where possible. Some series such as McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern or Brooks' Shannara series won't make sense unless you achieve the proper chronological order within the series instead of the published order but this isn't one of those pick one and enjoy!

After attending college in New York, Chase returns to Vegas and is drawn into the lucrative but dangerous world of a teenage call-girl service with his childhood friend Michele, a beautiful Salvadoran immigrant with whom he shares a tragic past. Over the course of one extraordinary summer they will confront the violence and emptiness at the heart of the city and their generation.

At once stark and electrically atmospheric, horrifying and hopeful, The Delivery Man is an ambitious literary novel and a powerful indictment of a society in which personal responsibility has been abandoned, lust is increasingly mistaken for love, and innocence is an anachronism.

The Delivery Man: A Novel, by Joe McGinniss Jr.

From Publishers Weekly Sex, lies, crushed dreams and slot machines are paramount in McGinniss's flashy, fast-moving debut. Chase is a struggling artist who couldn't hack NYU and moves back to Vegas, where he is reunited with his adolescent flame, Michele. After being fired from his teaching job for beating up a student, Chase plans to hook up with his girlfriend, Julia, in California, but instead spends his summer as a chauffeur for Michele's call-girl business. Michele has plans for herself (buying a house, getting an advanced degree in women's studies), but for the time being is running the call-girl service out of a suite in the Versailles Palace Hotel and Casino with her boyfriend, Bailey. Girls too young for the job, readily available cocaine, untrustworthy business partners, memories of a family tragedy and glammed-out Vegas goons make Chase's summer more stressful than he had hoped for as he attempts to finish a few paintings for a group gallery show. The novel is action-packed, though the character development—particularly with the women—is sometimes superficial. McGinniss (son of another Joe McGinnis you may have heard of) successfully gambles with the notion that whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but what does that mean for Chase and his plans to escape? From the Publisher "At first glance, this debut novel looks like a good, short read for the next time you're waiting at the airport. It's an insider's guide to the dark underbelly of twenty-first-century Las Vegas, brimming with brand names, hard bodies, hard drugs, and heavy doses of sex and violence. If that's all you're looking for, The Delivery Man won't disappoint. . . . But once you finish it, you won't be able to get it out of your mind--McGinniss uses his fast-paced, B-movie plotline to explore how the flip side of the American dream can often be an inescapable nightmare, much like F. Scott Fitzgerald manipulated the melodrama of The Great Gatsby. In fact, The Delivery Man, like Gatsby, is the story of a lost generation. While Fitzgerald's flappers danced as fast as they could before their world collapsed in Depression and war, McGinniss's losers are stranded in an empty landscape of dead sex, coked-out emotion, and pointless danger. To his credit, McGinniss refuses to take the easy, ironic way out favored by so many contemporary writers who distance the reader from the characters. You see these doomed, wretched people for what they are, and then McGinniss allows them to break your heart. The Delivery Man is that rare first novel that could well become a classic." --Peter Bloch, Penthouse "This debut novel from the son of the famed true-crime reporter is a searing portrait of young wastrels adrift in a vacuous Las Vegas. Chase couldn't cut it as an NYU art student and now finds himself mired in old, self-destructive patterns. Fired from his high-school teaching job following a fistfight with one of his students, he falls into a job chauffeuring a ring of teenage call girls to clients' homes. The ring is run by an old friend, an acquisitive Salvadoran immigrant who longs to buy a home in one of the ubiquitous new housing developments springing up in the desert. Although Chase is engaged to an ambitious business grad student and is himself struggling to finish a group of paintings for a gallery opening, he finds his sense of purpose draining away. Unsavory business partners and old vendettas soon come into fast and furious play. McGinniss never wavers from his ruthless portrayal of the morally bankrupt, and some readers may be put off by the unlikable characters, but this atmospheric page-turner gains increasing depth as it barrels toward a gut-wrenching conclusion." --Joanne Wilkinson, Booklist

The Addictions of the Vegas Sex World By Doug This is a gritty and realistic novel about what it must be like to be young and hooked on the "easy" money of the Vegas sex worker's world of young girls and their male pimp partners. The main character has moved into a more legitimate world of education, art and business, classy future wife, etc., but is pulled into the shallow lifestyle of some of his previous high school girlfriends and friends, to temporarily get by and have somewhere to hang out. But like people who get hooked on drugs, he is pulled into this world gradually, fighting it, and yet it is always clear that he will be unable to pull out of his descent into this hellish world. The sex and drugs are never glamorized. It is clear that they all fall gradually into the pit and then can't get out because the money is good, their lives are clouded by drugs and alcohol and it is the world that they are given. It would have been a better book if we were left with any hope for any of the characters. Perhaps he's telling us it's like having hope for heroin addicts. Once addicted, it's pretty hard to get out.The book is pretty compelling, it moved well, had interesting characters and painted a realistic world. In the end, it was a bit too lugubrious for me.

Grattan Just as Chase, twenty-five year old stymied artist and now teacher at a Las Vegas high school, tells his class, "None of you are going anywhere," so is the case with this book. With his childhood friends, Michele, a sultry Latino, and rich kid Bailey, trying to run a prostitution service out a Las Vegas hotel, even involving high school girls, one would expect an edgy, exotic novel. Or perhaps a highly thoughtful examination of Las Vegas-like culture. The book has a matter-of-factness feel throughout. Nothing is important. Chase's artistic trials and his failing relationship with his black, MBA girlfriend are not compelling. A high school kid starts a fight with Chase and gets him fired. That barely gets a rise. It the characters don't care, why should the reader. The book does not flow well; it is more an assemblage of scenes. It is not gritty reality as some would have it. It's more formula than anything. Las Vegas sex - wow - and teenagers, too. The characters are bored and boring.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Everyone loves watching the downward spiral By Lost High Guey First of all, this book is filthy, pulpy, trashy, voyeuristic, morally ambiguous, violent, and sleazy. The characters are ruthless, unscrupulous, sex-addicted, drug popping, money hungry, reprehensible, irresponsible, dangerous and unpredictable. Yet, we love them because they have the two characteristics that make all sin eminently forgivable. They have youth. They have beauty. And not one thing else matters. Oh yeah, except for the money.Add in a character who is supposed to be the moral center of the book's universe and you can just see where this is going to go. But getting there with him is half the fun. Like watching Nicholas Cage drink himself to death, we get to see a talented artist who is in love with a beautiful prostitute try unsuccessfully to get past a tragedy in his life. We get to bear witness to the swath of destruction that he hacks across multiple lives by agreeing to be a part of her savage plans to make big money fast. It doesn't matter that his intentions are good, the fact that he can't quit this poisonous girl will be his destruction. That he is supposed to be the moral center means that his downfall will be swift and terrible.Only at the end do you see a glimmer of hope, of recreation in the name of hate and revenge. He is finally transformed into something else, a monster with an eye for payback, his youth and his beauty gone but maybe a lesson learned and a hint of the coming revenge...but now I'm getting too close to writing a spoiler, so I'd better stop. The plot is fast and the book isn't a towering force of literature. It is however a provocative read that will get you through a couple of airport stops or a boring vacation back home. It has good twists and insight into a world that we all hear about but that most of us won't ever really know. It promises Nabokov but delivers Tarantino, which isn't so bad.I will say this though, the book had one scene that I thought was amazing, the insult (read also truth) game! That Chase essentially gets one chance to tell Michelle how he feels about her and what he ACTUALLY tells her...WOW! I almost dropped the book. That kind of honesty will get Joe McGinniss somewhere and soon. The book is shallow, gritty and compelling which begs the question, who do you get to play Chase in the movie? Who do you get to play Bailey, Michelle, Julia and Carly? Personally, I can't wait for one of my friends to read this book so I can have this discussion with them.

Under Minnesota Skies is a lively telling of stories from several generations and a memoir of three daughters growing up on a farm near Owatonna, Minnesota in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Inspired by their father’s love for the 394-acre farm that has been in the family for more than a century, the authors search for their immigrant ancestors to gain greater understanding of their own family traditions, foods and work ethic. Are they Czech or German? Who influenced the family to change from dairy to beef cattle? Does their father really need boys to help run the farm? Answers emerge as the family goes from farming with horses to using tractor power and new laborsaving machinery. The determined daughters tackle jobs mostly reserved for boys: loading hay and straw bales, feeding cattle and pigs and side-raking hay. As they build fences, pull weeds, paste Green Stamps and take Sunday drives, the daughters reveal the dust and sweat endured along with the lessons learned and deep bonds achieved in a close-knit family working together to make a living from the land. Even if you don’t have farm roots, this book’s easy-to-read and thoughtful approach could be the spark that motivates you to write your own family stories.

By C Hegle Every midwesterner has a family story. Most of them begin in the mid or late 1800's and involve an ethnic european resettlement to a small piece of farmland in Minnesota or the Dakotas. From there, some farms are lost or abandoned, but some survive and even flourish. All required incredible hard work and courage. This book is a wonderful telling of that story by the daughters of a successful family farmer, and includes their active participation in the farming process back when girls and women often did the work if there were no men, but were rarely recognized or written about. One of the authors is a retired journalist, and has trimmed a family saga down to a short and readable book that includes just enough historic pictures to give life to this farm family and the techniques used through the life of the land. Reading this book brought back long forgotten memories of the simplicity of small town life as a child in Minnesota. A great gift for any former or current small farming town inhabitant. Excellent bibliography.

By Joanne Music This was my second purchase of Under Minnesota Skies as it is a book I wanted to share. It is the kind of story that many people will enjoy reading. The best part is how well it is written. It is interesting, inspirational, entertaining and very pleasing to read. It will bring back childhood memories. You will also learn the unique and special Hondl family, multi-general story. It's history written in a most pleasing reading style. When I get one of the copies back it will go in a "Little Library". Who knows how many readers will enjoy it!

We can all relate and be inspired to discover our own familial history. It also gives us great insight into the lives of the American farmer and respect for the lives they live to provide us with the basic necessities. They truly are the backbone of our country.

Rodney Mann was Every Man, a few times over. Raised by his grandparents in North Carolina, he strived to be the best at what ever he did. He played baseball to earn a scholarship; he joined the Navy to become a SEAL, earning two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart; he got a job at a restaurant to quickly work his way up to a General Manager position with a six figure salary package. He swims better than fish. Rodney is genuine. He is not afraid of hard work, and he loves competition. He hates needles, he's afraid of heights, and sometimes he likes to go a little too fast. "It's a good thing I had a good life before this happened." “Life with the Suicide Disease: The Story of Rodney Mann” is the true story of a man whose life of hard work and accomplishment was stopped, then set on fire by the most painful nerve disease known to medicine. Rodney brought some PTSD home from the navy, so he could not work for the federal government anymore. He chose a career in the restaurant business. Having survived the training of a decorated SEAL - the Management program at Outback was an easier ladder to climb. In a few short years he earned the position of General Manager at a fine dining restaurant. He was engaged. Everything was in place. This is how it was supposed to be. One morning, while cleaning up after a previous night's reception, Rodney slipped backward on a wet cement floor, shattering his hand while breaking his fall. He had multiple surgeries, and spent six months wired and bolted into a cast. Then one evening, while trying to relax after physical therapy, the fire moved into his left arm. "Like somebody dipped it in gas and lit it up, from the bones out." Everything good was about to disappear. That was twelve years ago. Long after everything that can be done has been done, and nothing works. He cannot safely take more meds; he's on his fourth spinal cord stimulator. There are a few different medical names for what he's got – RSD, CRPS, Causalgia - but everybody that lives with it knows it as the Suicide Disease. The story is written as it was told to the author. He was searching for a lifeline; he met a story teller. Read "Life with the Suicide Disease: The Story of Rodney Mann"

Rodney's life is paralleled by many many millions diagnosed. Not a single word was exaggerated. Only one word should not be in the book... Rare! I recommend this book to medical and mental health professionals, friends and family of loved ones suffering with RSD/CRPS, and lastly.. To the unfortunate souls living their lives engulfed by the flames 24/7.

The book is written as if Rodney is sitting down talking to you. He is very transparent and let's you into his heart. This book will make you smile, make you cry, and make you realize just how strong of a man he is ( although I don't think he realizes just how strong he is) for not giving into this horrible disease! I've bought this for myself and wish I could buy more and give to every orthopedic, pain management, and neurologist so that nobody would have to be put through the hell that Rodney was put through!
