One woman's mythic search for self-realization in a distant tomorrow... Her sensuality was at the core of her world, her quest beyond the civilized stars. Aristocrat. Outcast. Picara. Slave. Ruler. "Engrossing characters in a marvelous adventure." - Charles N. Brown, Locus Magazine "The amazing and erotic adventures of the most beautiful courtesan in tomorrow's universe" - Frederik Pohl "The best single example of prostitution used in fantasy is Janet Morris' Silistra series... Estri's character is most like that of Ishtar who describes herself as "'a prostitute compassionate am I'" because she "symbolizes the creative submission to the demands of instinct, to the chaos of nature ...the free woman, as opposed to the domesticated woman". Linking Estri with these lunar and water symbols is not difficult because of the moon's eternal virginity (the strength of integrity) links with her changeability (the prostitute's switching of lovers). [...] Morris strengthens the moon imagery by having Estri as a well-keepress because wells, fountains, and the moon as the orb which controls water have long been associated with fertility, [...] In a sense, she is like the moon because she is apparently eternal, never waxing or waning except in her pursuit of the quest; she is the prototypical wanderer like the moon and Ishtar. She is the eternal night symbol of the moon in opposition to the Day-Keepers [...] At her majority (her three hundredth birthday), she is given a silver-cubed hologram letter from her mother, containing a videotape of her conception by the savage bronzed barbarian god from another world. [...] If Estri's mother then acts as a bawd, willing her lineage as Well-Keepress to her daughter, then Estri's great-grandmother Astria as foundress of the Well becomes a further mother-bawd figure when she offers her prophetic advice in her letter: "Guard Astria for you may lose it, and more. Beware of one who is not as he seems. Stray not in the port city of Baniev ...look well about you, for your father's daughter's brother seeks you". Having no brother that she knows of does not stay Estri from undertaking the heroic quest of finding her father." - Anne K. Kaler, The Picara: From Hera to Fantasy Heroine

By J&R Michaels I was given an ARC of High Couch of Silistra by Janet Morris last week and just completed reading it.In this first book of High Couch of Silistra (of four) readers follow an aristocratic woman named Estri in her quest for self-realization on a world far from Earth that has suffered an ecological disaster. This is not a book for beginning readers, readers under 13, nor for people who only read books whose politics they agree with. It won't please haters of any sort: man-haters, woman-haters, or haters of the human race. High Couch of Silistra is about sex, power, the genetic bases of behavior, all set in a universe where a powerful mind can change the future.. This is a book for intelligent people who like a rollicking, challenging adventure that explores all the facets of power and interpersonal relationships. Oh, and I received an Advance Readers Copy. Now that these things are said, here is a bit about the story, and it's a great one. Estri is as woman of noble birth on a world where reproduction is difficult, birthrates are low, and consequently women who can become pregnant are very powerful. When she comes of age, Estri's dead mother sends her a message: find your father. And off she goes, leaving her family's stronghold for a strange land full of peril and violence, with only her precognitive gifts and her status to protect her. She encounters adventures that include violence against men and women, betrayal, death... sex and love.High Couch of Silistra tackles highly charged issues of sexuality but is not pornographic. Rather, it is thoughtful. HCoS explores philosophies and belief systems very different from ours -- yet its mythic basis is very like ours. And an extra bonus is the included glossary that I had to refer to many times. Best of all, this story is the adventures of a roguish female hero who isn't afraid to confront the truths about being human. I loved it and can't wait to read the second volume in this quartet.Rhonda M

As one would expect from Janet Morris there is a lot more to this story than a simple science fiction tale. Firstly the protagonist is a woman, and a strong one at that. Estri is not your screaming maiden waiting to be rescued. She’s a feisty woman, who knows her worth, knows her skills, and her failings and above all she knows herself.Estri is more than a woman of pleasure – for on her world this is no shameful profession. As Well Keepress she is much sought after, and highly skilled, but she is also teacher, student, lover, friend, fighter, diplomat, businesswoman, a slave, mistress and so much more.Silistra is a world of contrasts – its people long-lived, its terrain in places inhospitable and its morals unusual. Fertility is everything in a world where the people rarely breed successfully. Duty, or Chaldra is everything – be that duty to oneself, one’s people, or the world in general.. A world misunderstood by the others, but attractive for many reasons, not least its Well Women must stand for its uniqueness and protect its beliefs. In many ways Estri is Silistra – wise, with hidden dangers, intriguing, alluring, complex and misunderstood.Duty, power, sex, the complexities of relationships between men and women, and how they can change, fate, courage, loyalty, betrayal, personal journeys, fear, and adventure fill every chapter. The sex is not overdone, considering the context and although there is violence that too speaks of the power play which is core. The world building, as with Morris’s other novels, is rich, complex and totally believable. For the duration of the tale Silistra is real. The characters, too, are a mix of good and bad, but no way clear cut. These are living, breathing characters with all that entails. This is not a book for those of a faint heart or who cannot see deep within a tale for what lies therein. It’s a book to make the reader think. It's a book of great stature, and storytelling of the finest sort. Of course it’s also a book for those who seek a heady adventure beyond the stars.I couldn't put it down.
