Everybody has someone they’d secretly like to kill. For Mallory and his fellow professional mystery authors, that someone is caustic book critic Kirk Rath. And while that’s no secret, it’s certainly a surprise when a busload of writers takes part in a mountain resort’s Murder Mystery Weekend ― and discovers their archenemy has been cast in the plum part of the victim. What’s more surprising is how well Kirk Rath plays dead ― until Mallory discovers the most hated man on Mohonk Mountain isn’t playing. Now, snowbound in a house full of murder mystery writers, murder mystery fans, and at least one mystery murderer, Mallory must once more play detective ― for real ― while keeping the weekend game-players from finding out there’s a genuine game of deadly cat-and-mouse afoot. And that’s the easy part. What’s going to be harder than Mike Hammer’s fist is figuring out if one of his comrades in crime fiction is capable of putting down the pen…and picking up the sword. Murder will out, as they say. But can even the masterful Mallory outwit a roguish gallery of the finest plotters in print?

From Publishers Weekly Mystery-writer and -writing lore pervade this new effort by the author of A Shroud for Aquarius. Crime writer Mallory is invited to a mystery weekend at Mohonk Mountain House in upstate New York. As in real-life Mohonk mystery weekends, crime writers and fans are "suspects" and detective teams. The "victim" is to be a nasty, powerful critic who is thoroughly disliked. He storms out in a snit during the first session, and later that night when Mallory looks out of the window in his room, he sees the critic apparently being murdered. There are no other witnesses and no corpse so Mallory wonders if the killing is a hoax or part of the mystery weekend program. When Mallory and his girlfriend Jill find the critic's body the next day atop the mountain, a blizzard prevents their contacting the police. Mallory begins his sleuthing that climaxes in a snowbound, classic confrontation with everyone in dinner clothes. Adepts will spot the solution just ahead of Mallory, the mystery-within-a-mystery is a snap, and Mallory's quips wear thin. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

He thinks he'll participate in a weekend of fun and mystery games. On the first night, however, Mallory is gazing out the window and sees a brutal murder. He raises the alarm but the body can't be found! The game goes on as planned, with everyone thinking that what Mallory saw was part of the game. Mallory isn't convinced, though, and he soon finds proof that what he saw was real. A blizzard hits and players and guests are trapped in at Mohonk Mountain House. With a killer? It would seem so!This is an imaginative story full of suspense and twists. Hero Mallory is Sam Spade with a typewriter.

Mallory (we never learn any other name for him much like Parker and Nolan) is a crime writer invited to one of those murder weekends where they enact a fake murder, create suspects, and then have teams present rationale for who they think might have committed the murder. It's no surprise that there's a real murder that requires Mallory to discover the real murderer. The victim is a universally hated critic, Kirk Rath, who feels it's his job to lift murder mysteries from the muck of triviality and provide them a place in the pantheon of literary fiction. He ridicules and belittles everyone along the way so he had plenty of enemies, many of whom were at the event. It's not a unique plot. Others have done it better, but it was written several decades ago so I'll give him pass on that. This is an early Collins and it shows. The resolution, while explained, is little developed and I failed to get a "feel" for the surroundings. The atmosphere was a little forced. Nevertheless, it held my interest and I'll read more in the series. There is foreshadowing of some of the sardonic writing that has become de rigueur in P.I. novels. I rather like it. Here's a sample:"Of course, just on general principles, I hate the Great Out-of-Doors. I grew up on a farm, and from my early childhood swore I would one day live in the city--Port City, as it turned out, but that counts, technically at least. Will Rogers said he never met a man he didn't like; I never milked a cow I liked. The last period of my life during which I spent an inordinate amount of time in the Great Out-of-Doors was a place called Vietnam, where roughing it meant something other than a Winnebago and a six-pack of Bud. Camping trips don't appeal much to those of us whose boondockers got soggy in a rice paddy. I swore to myself if I ever got back on good old dry American soil I'd spend as much time as possible indoors. Or, as I like to put it, the Great Indoors."I sympathize. My idea of camping these days is Super 8, especially after milking 250 cows a day years ago.

The main character was just disinterested enough in his circumstances to make him fun to follow. Although you are given enough clues to guess the murderer early on, there were plenty of suspects, and twists enough to keep you guessing throughout. This is a book I will go back to again. and will look out for other novels by Max Allan Collins written from his hero Mallory's point of view.
