I loved it, but I am prejudiced By Gina B I became aware that Robert Calef was my 7th great-grandfather and that is what spurred my interest in the book. Aside from that, I felt like I got a really good intro. to the Salem witch trials. I loved the way that Calef put his arguments together, probably because he argues in the same manner that I do.By the way, the Salem Witch Museum is the worse excuse for a museum that I have seen in an entire lifetime of museum going. It would be too scary for very young children, and to silly for older ones, so unless you have a junior high school age child, I would give this a miss.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. critique of Mather By Christena Lundy This is a true copy of an original document. It is written in 17th century English i.e. 300 word sentences, many of whose words have changed meaning over time. It is an argument among true believers. It is slow reading. This is, however, what we should read in conjunction with modern histories of previous eras, to help us enter a bit into the mindset of our early decades. Fury here is expressed, not by chattering heads, but by the honed prose of an educated man. Ralph Calef is not my ancestor; I would have been proud. Instead, Henry Herrick, one of the jurors at the Salem trials, is mine. I want to get into his mind, but other than the famed nonapology apology, he remains silent. I look into others. Was his bad judgment influenced by Mather, one of the country's first great Triangulators? Calef spoke out against this shape shifter, and I'm glad to have met him. I give this book 4 stars as an important historical document.
