I have been intrigued by the idea of fasting for weight control for a while, but had never really understood what it entailed. This book walks you step by step through each aspect of intermittent fasting, explaining the benefits, why it works, and different ways of making it fit into your lifestyle. I particularly like the flexible approach the book takes - you can introduce this approach to eating into your diet to a greater or lesser extent, depending on what your goals are. Having read this book, I have a solid understanding of intermittent fasting and feel very confident when planning my own experiments with this eating choice.

The book covers the theory behind intermittent fasting and then moves on to some extremely delicious recipes. In particular I love the photos in this book! Most cook books don't have photos of what you are making so you have no idea if you made them correctly. The other problem with many cook books is that the photos are low quality. Neither of these problems is found in this book. The pictures really help in making the decision of which recipes you want to make and then also evaluating whether you did it right or not!

It is nice to see an elaborate plan and I may try that in the future but I got it because of the promise of 100+ recipes. These recipes surprised me because they have pictures and several of them really stood out like the breakfast sushi platter. So much fun to make with easy ingredients but awesome presentation! The Mediterranean Pizza with yogurt was good too!

Barten In the recent hardcover edition which I have, the dates of printing of Thorstein Veblen's book IMPERIAL GERMANY AND THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION are listed as 1915, 1939, and 1964. In the first two years listed, America was safely sitting on the sidelines, observing the kind of warlike behavior attributed to the dynastic state in this book in Europe, much as Elizabethan England enjoyed several centuries of isolation from the wars which were devastating Europe in the years in which its economic activities became industrial, though socially, as Veblen observed, "Conventions that are in some degree effete continue to cumber the ground." (p. 30). By 1964, America was playing such a large role in the world that Germany might have been the kind of problem that America, from a unique position of political and military superiority, ought to have been able to resolve, and possibly did by acting as if the major problems in the world were somewhere else.Chapter I, Introductory -- Races and Peoples, compares the mixture of races which populated England and Germany to be quite similar, if not exactly the same. A note on page 23, in Chapter 2, The Old Order, compares such mixing with what occurred in Japan, "and possibly also the Aegean peoples of antiquity." "By a curious coincidence, the period of Japanese prehistory and history seems to cover loosely the same general interval of time as that of the Baltic peoples; and as with the latter, so in the case of the Japanese, the cultural life-history of the people is a history of facile and ubiquitous borrowing done in the most workmanlike manner and executed with the most serviceable effect."In the chapter on The Dynastic State, Veblen notes that printing was a handicraft which was well practiced in Germany, and included "the circulation of obnoxious literature that purveys excessively modern ideas" (note on p. 76), but that it appeared to be best "to engender that habit of reading as to make the assimilation of the new industrial order an easy matter, resulting in a marked advance in efficiency and physical comfort, and then to temper coercion with a well-conceived cajolery." (note, p. 76).One of the pleasures of reading Veblen is encountering philosophical ideas in an utterly different context, as on page 109:. . . While the corresponding English movement, in so far as touches the point here in question, has tended strongly to an atheistic and unmoral scheme of opaque and impersonal matter of fact. This work of the human spirit as it has come into play under the German habituation is spoken of as "nobler," "profounder,"--a point not to be disputed, since such discrimination is invidious and is an affair of taste and perspective.The final paragraph of the chapter on The Case of England is devoted to the "direct waste of time and substance involved in this ubiquitous addiction to sports." (p. 148). I enjoy Veblen's offhandedly remarkable description of how "persons with a predilection for artistic and intellectual dissipations may be moved to deprecate addiction to dissipations of this crude and brutalizing nature," (p. 148) but this book deserves far more serious readers than I am.

Imperial Germany and the industrial revolution AMA Publications By JPP This particular Kindle edition is a blurry scan of uncomfortable letter type, projected at a quarter turn. Portions of text cut-off. "See inside" shows that clearly. Not satisfactory. As the publishers mention, maybe it's better on a large-screen (rotatable) device, instead of a normal Kindle size. I do think there is not much justification for the price. Purely for reading the book, try a free version.

Mr. Alejandrino impressives, not only in how well his story is written, but in his unique vision of a world that should be Camelot and how skillfully he maneuvered behind the scenes attempting to make it so. His philosophy that "life is full of risks" and his efforts to overcome a "culture of fear" by fighting against corruption and making bold attempts to fix a broken system are nothing short of heroic in scope.His story has everything: intrigue, revolution and redemption. Bravo, Mr. Alejandrino! Well done!

An Epic Journey by a True Knight By Ila France Porcher, Author of The Shark Sessions "The Journal of an Unknown Knight" is Jose Alejandrino's story of his life, focusing on his extraordinary career. Beginning in earliest childhood, he describes his unusual and dramatic experiences in meticulous detail.He grew up as the son of a diplomat, and so the people he knew were politicians, with their friends and families. His accounts of this environment are surprising and often funny. He gained valuable experience in different countries, always rubbing shoulders with the most influencial politicians and their entourages. He worked in UNESCO, where he learned, among other things, the ins and outs of International Finance, and then returned to his native land, the Philippines, to help re-establish peace and democracy when President Ferdinand Marco's policies led to severe trouble.The description of how he handled the situation there reveals him to be a very astute diplomat. He worked behind the scenes in a variety of roles, including as a journalist, influencing important people and events. Thus he was a powerful force in keeping the Philippines evolving in a postitive direction through the election of Cory Aquino, her presidency, and then the presidency of Fidel Valdez Ramos.The story of how he left, due to his refusal to sacrifice his high moral standards, is a startling tale of contorted financial, religious, and political dealings. Alejandrino ends the book with a thought provoking commentary on life in general in a troubled world.This book will doubtless go down in history as one of the most detailed and important accounts of Philippine history during the period he describes.For everyone interested in the Philippines, and America's foreign affairs with the country, it is a must read.

About the Author Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. Barker This collection of stories, though set in the frozen wastes of the Yukon during the "Gold Rush", is timeless. As man and his technologies advance and his search for wealth continues, time-honored and primitive ways are pushed aside. London expertly illustrates this same experience through the indigenous peoples of the north and the "white" man. He makes it easy for the reader to identify with the native's point of view, and to understand the perplexity they experienced dealing with these strange new men with "fire in their blood". London puts the reader at the council fire of great chiefs, in the canoes of warriors, and in the lodges of mysterious shamans and "medicine" men. These stories are not only about man's struggle with nature, but with other men and perhaps the most difficult...himself. After reading these stories, I felt myself wanting to up and leave all traces of modern civilization behind. I wanted to build an igloo, put on a sealskin coat, and carve things on ivory tusks in front of a roaring fire!

This is not a book like Call of the Wild or Martin Eden. Rather, it consists of short vignettes that are, on their immediate face, about indigenous people in the Pacific Northwest. Really, though, the vignettes describe the human condition in general, from greed and spite to love and loyalty--and everything in between. Loved it.

In this compelling exploration of love and desire and the murky region in between, Christine Sneed gives us a glimpse of the Paris art world through the eyes of two flawed but likable characters, Jayne Marks and her older lover, Laurent. In many ways it's a novel of rumination and self-analysis, rather than action, and it never shies away from its characters' more sordid motivations: Jayne accepts an invitation to live with Laurent in Paris in order to pursue her art (an exceedingly uncomfortable arrangement for a modern feminist) while Laurent shows no interest in mending his philandering ways. One of my favorite details in the novel involves a minor revelation about Jayne: a birthday card for her neighbor was once placed in her mailbox by mistake. Opening it and finding that it contains $10, she keeps it. It's an extremely minor piece of backstory--seemingly incidental, even throwaway--but I think it's actually a brilliant bit of characterization. The novel revels in such unsparing, supremely human moments. We sympathize with these characters, we wish them well, but we must know them in all their compromised complexity, carried forward by the steady, quiet momentum of Sneed's clear and unflinching prose. It's a deceptively pleasurable, unsettlingly provocative read, and I thoroughly recommend it!

By Ally Grace I loved this book -- a perfect summer read if you're looking for a thoughtful romance with a strong touch of reality. Sneed is an award winning writer and her prose is impeccable -- New York, Paris, and the faithless human heart all deftly rendered. I loved the surprise change in point of view in the last section of the novel, which shows Sneed's ability to know all her characters inside and out. If you want to be in Paris this summer, but forgot to buy your ticket, PARIS, HE SAID, is the book for you. And when you finish, check out Sneed's other two books -- especially PORTRAITS OF A FEW MEN I'VE MADE CRY which is one of my all time favorites.

She's a great storyteller, sure, but what distinguishes this novel from the many flavor-of-the-month books is that she also writes exquisitely, creating enhanced sensibility and placing the reader in a world ripe with possibility: time spent with this novel is like those first few minutes of drinking the best champagne.

Lane has his work cut out, and for the most part delivers. He contends with multiple foreign accents and American dialects, not to mention gospel singing and Arabic recitations of the Koran. The tale follows a righteous Muslim teenager named Ahmad, an (Irish-Arab) American born and bred in northern New Jersey, and his seemingly inevitable journey toward a domestic suicide attack. Ahmad's Irish mother, Jewish guidance counselor and Lebanese employer/handler are all rendered with distinction by Lane. But Ahmad's accent is odd and hard to trace, almost seeming to contain a Dixie influence. Lane voices an African-American schoolmate in similar style, creating the potential for confusion when the two interact. Phone calls, snippets of TV shows, speeches and sermons are treated with a through-a-speaker effect that is sometimes disconcerting. But it doesn't detract from a generally rich audio experience, one built on diverse narration and ethnically sprawling storytelling. Critics compare his latest novel to In the Beauty of the Lilies and The Coup except that Terrorist has an intensely contemporary flare. It's almost scandalous to see one of America's literary lions toying with such an inflammatory topic—and in the guise of a thriller, no less. The litmus test of his success with Terrorist is whether he answers the central question: What drives someone to become a terrorist? Terrorist is exceedingly well researched, and Updike writes beautifully. Still, many reviewers criticize Updike for creating Ahmad as a puppet rather than a character. That a puppet is exactly what his Imam wishes him to be begs the question whether Ahmad is a successful creation or just a thin caricature.

From Booklist *Starred Review* Updike is never static; over the course of his long career, he has not only mastered various literary forms but also tackled a wide variety of subjects as material for his fiction. His new novel, swift, sinewy, and stylish, represents another big leap. In the hands of a lesser writer, such a risky topic and premise easily could have come across as presumptuous. Ahmad, an 18-year-old high school student, is the son of an Irish American mother and an Egyptian father. He has taken up the Islamic faith of his father so completely that he is obsessed with distancing himself from the unclean infidel, which is how he views the New Jersey community in which he lives. The high-school guidance counselor, who attempts to steer young Ahmad in a direction he feels is more suitable and productive, is a compelling and oddly attractive supporting character, who, as it turns out, plays a vital role in a deadly plot into which Ahmad tumbles like the naive, easily manipulated adolescent he is. This marvelous novel can be accurately labeled as a 9/11 novel, but it deserves also the label of masterpiece for its carefully nuanced building up of the psychology of those who traffic in terrorism. McEwan This is a tough call, but on the whole I am giving this novel 4 stars because it successfully held my attention, got me engaged in trying to understand the characters' motives and is beautifully written. Having said that, I want to acknowledge that many of the criticisms leveled here by other Amazon reviewers do have merit, primarily the charge that Updike's characters are often stereotypical. Of interest to me is that, while many reviewers complained about the stereotypes of fat wives, Arab-Americans and single mothers, I didn't notice any comments on the characters of African-American school girl Joryleen and her boyfriend, who is named "Tylenol," of all things. But in any case, since the stereotype issues have been well covered by other reviewers, I'm going to let that go and focus on what I see as the positives of this novel, and there really are quite a few.For one thing, I like the fact that Updike chose this very difficult topic to write about and also made obvious efforts to understand aspects of Islamic-American culture that are doubtless utterly foreign to him. An author of his standing could just coast for the rest of his career, but this writer chose to stretch himself and try to get inside the mind of a character that represents a far more complex America than that of Rabbit, for example. This is an America that we had all better take a shot at understanding, since this is the one we are living in today, and will have to go on living in for some time to come. Believers in Islam are here and they are becoming an ever more important force in the polyglot US -- AND it is pretty clear that many of these folks are severely disaffected from the mainstream culture. *If* this alienation tends to encourage violent actions, then those of us who are of the so-called "majority" culture had better spend some time trying to understand why that is, and think about how we can help these new US residents succeed here. (That's a big IF, since it seems perfectly plausible to me that cultural alienation does not lead to "homegrown" terrorism at all. But for the purposes of this review, I am assuming that it could.)Another positive of this novel is that it is beautifully written and highly evocative of place. The place happens to be a depressingly urbanized New Jersey, so it's easy to miss the power of Updike's descriptions, but consider this passage: "...the sky cloudless but for a puffy far scatter over Long Island, the ozone at the zenith so intense it seems a smooth-walled pit of blue fire, the accumulated towers of lower Manhattan a single gleaming mass, speedboats purring and sailboats tilting in the bay, the cries and conversation of the tourist crowd making a dapple of harmless sound around them. 'This beauty,' Ahmad thinks 'must mean something -- a hint from Allah, a foreshadow of Paradise.'As for the criticism that Updike is anti-American and using the character of Ahmad to voice his own complaints, I counter by saying that it's important for us Americans to be more self-reflective than we may find comfortable, and that Updike is contributing something useful by raising important moral and ethical challenges to our behavior as a nation in the world. Take for example this line from pp. 198-9 of the novel: "[True adherents] believe that a billion followers of Islam need not have their eyes and ears and souls corrupted by the poisonous entertainments of Hollywood and a ruthless economic imperialism whose Christian-Jewish God is a decrepit idol, a mere mask concealing the despair of atheists."Granted, that is powerful stuff and certainly discomfiting. But if one reads any of the world's press at all, it is pretty clear that this is the image that many people have of America, and the challenge Updike's characters are presenting in this novel seem to me to be worth considering. What sort of response shall we give to a comment like the above? How observant of our religious principles are the majority of us here in the US, and what about the economic fallout of our national trade and security policies? I am not saying that I agree with the assessments of the characters in this novel, nor do I necessarily think we should assume Updike does. But it is a view that we might at least consider if we hope to come to peaceable terms with the billions of Muslims who are solid citizens of this and the world's other nations, and who have no hostile intentions.So, for me, the bottom line on Terrorist is that it's an important book that raises difficult questions that ought to be given some serious thought. We should be glad that Updike chose to write it.

62 of 72 people found the following review helpful. Good but doesn't quite live up to its promise By Galen K. Valentine Updike's, "Terrorist" is a timely novel. Newspapers and magazines are still full of the ebb and flow of terrorist and counter-terrorist operations. It is difficult for me, and by extension I think of American society in general, to understand why anyone would choose to become a suicide-bomber. Though they are only a fraction of the terrorists they are the most puzzling. So, I bought Updike's latest book on the strength of his reputation as a novelist and the reviews claiming his understanding of the radical mindset.On the surface the story is about a teenager, Ahmed, who embraces an austere form of Islam. His mother, perhaps feeling guilty about his father's departure, leaves him to his own devices. An intervention is clearly necessary to save Ahmed from his Imam and Updike chooses Mr. Levy, a sixtyish guidance counselor at Ahmed's high school. The story's trajectory predictably puts Ahmed and Mr. Levy together in the truck carrying the bomb.Scratch the surface though and you find...well, read on.Ahmed is largely unforgiving, except, illogically, to the father who abandoned him. He is unapologetic, never needing to justify his beliefs to others or even to himself. His isolation and social awkwardness are not the product of his own attitudes, but of everyone else's. In almost every way, Ahmed acts like any teenager, if a bit more radical. And that is the problem. Remove the radical Islamic element from the novel and you have a story of a generic teenager. If Updike is saying that suicide-bombers are just like "ordinary" people, with the same problems and fears, I think he missed the boat. There clearly is a difference. If there weren't, then suicide-bombers would be far more prevalent. What I had hoped for was a deeper understanding of why an Islamist would choose to commit suicide in a manner that kills as many other people as possible. Failing that, I would have liked to understand why Ahmed as an individual would make such a choice; his social problems aren't enough since so many other children of broken families face the same issues without making such a gruesome decision. I got neither.The story is structured to propel Ahmed, and by extension the reader, toward his violent final act - exit stage left. But we are robbed of even that. Surprise endings aren't bad. I like them. But only when they result in that, "Aha!" moment when all of the pieces fall together. This wasn't one of them. I felt blind-sided and left wondering just what the point of the book was.It might seem that I hated the book. I didn't. There were moments when I felt that Updike had looked into the soul of America and understood it. The scenes devoted to Mr. Levy and his wife are masterful. I just felt that he hadn't delivered on the promise of the book.Updike was, and still is, considered one of the premiere voices of American society. But, "Terrorist" showed me that he hasn't quite mastered the subtleties of another culture. In the final analysis, I'm not sure Updike understands suicide-bombers anymore than I do. He does put a more human face on them. And his writing is superb. In that respect, "Terrorist" is worth reading. But don't expect to gain a deeper insight into terrorism.

52 of 61 people found the following review helpful. guess I'm in the minority here By E.M. Bristol but I was a bit baffled by this book. For one thing, the writing was so uneven. There were beautiful, evocative descriptions of the New Jersey suburb, and then there was sexual metaphor that reminded me all too well why I avoid cheesy romance novels like the plague.I know this sounds incredibly presumptuous, but it seemed to me like Updike made a mistake a lot of first time novelists make by not trusting his reader enough. I think anyone who picks up a book like this can be expected to remember which character is obese, which is Jewish, which wears black jeans and white shirts, and which has gorgeous green eyes without it having to be hammered home throughout the book. Quite a few writers out there do seem rather enamored with the color of their protagonists' skin and eyes and so forth, but I for one would prefer more time to be devoted to developing their thoughts, feelings, personalities and motives. Especially motives. If a basically non-violent young man who is not a complete sheep is going to decide to carry out a suicide mission, it needs to be clearer what's going on inside his head. Updike gives us various motives, but none seems strong enough for him to decide to take such a militant course of action.As reviewers have mentioned the titular "terrorist" winds up being the most likeable character in the book, but he gets this by default. The other characters are inoffensive at best and repugnant at worst. True a character can be deeply flawed and likeable at the same time, but that did not really apply to any of the ones in this book. In fact, I consistently got the feeling that it wasn't really the protagonist who looked down on the Americans around him, it was Updike.

Not ever knowing John as he was a good 10+ years older than me..I can relate to his story about life in our small town. Things have changed a lot since we were kids but I still have to believe that if I needed something my neighbors would still help out as they did back then for John. Thanks for your story John...you seem to have overcome any obstacles that tried to stand in your way in your youth and it made you a better person I'm sure. My mom, at 87, had stopped reading, but when you stopped in to give her an autographed book, she was so happy she came home and read it from cover to cover, Telling me how great it was and how she could relate to the book and you. Hopkins This is a work of art and autobiography by a poet who, once committed to communicate with readers, never compromised on doing so. Robert Nichols years sharing his love of literature with teenagers, and was good at it. But he also loved literature enough to actually create it, and left the city to write, in a tipi near timberline in the Colorado mountains. Personal risk and personal sacrifice produced clear thinking and clear writing. Some of it is about the logistics of living in the high country; some of it about the spiritual trade-offs and why it was worth doing. And set between those chapters are jewel-like memories of dips taken in snow-melt rivers, horses who came to visit inside the tipi, mad mountain midnights, and much else rarely experienced by those of us who live more comfortable lives.

About the Author A woman of many talents - Daviess wrote 13 novels, made a mark in artistic circles, and lent massive support to the woman suffrage movement. After graduating as an art student from Peabody College, Nashville she travelled to Europe. There she earned great acclaim for her photographs and miniatures. In 1904 she returned to America and started teaching art. Her interest then shifted to writing and she penned 13 novels and an autobiography, Seven Times Seven (1923), in a span of fifteen years. Her writings are known for their optimism. She also adapted her novels for stage. Daviess was a great supporter of the women's right to vote and played a vital role in helping women of Tennessee attain this goal.

The overweight Molly recieves help from the doctor on losing her extra weight, while at the same time, finding the love she wants. A happy tale, of love and family, it is a sweet, comfortable read.

Hart A distant cousin gave me her copy of this book--it had been given to her by my great-grandma, and she'd read it time and time again. She warned me, though, that there were outdated notions in the book and that it wouldn't be acceptable by today's standards.There is some truth to what she said; the book's age is apparent in many ways. The sort of small, gossipy, isolated town Molly lives in still exists today, but is not so common as it was in Molly's time. One can hope that a modern doctor wouldn't support, let alone suggest, some of the weight-loss measures Molly takes. And, of course, standards for widows--and for women in general--have changed.But Molly's personality is more timeless than the societal issues. Her frivolity, her fickle flirtation, and the realizations she makes as she becomes less childish all contribute to her likability and the writing's believability. Furthermore, the buildup to the climax is excellent. This book may never be considered a classic, but it is thoroughly enjoyable--a perfect read for a rainy afternoon.

Woman After her youthful love, Alfred Bennett, moves away to Europe, heartbroken Molly is talked into marrying ol' stick-in-the-mud Mr. Carter. He kicks the bucket after a few years. Now that she's free again, Alfred dares to renew his plight with love letters and the promise to return for her in their small Tennessee town. While Molly is ecstatic, she's also a little bit worried because, well, it's been a couple of years and she's kinda put on a couple of pounds since last Alfred saw her. And who hasn't! It happens to the best of us! There's nothing wrong with being slightly overweight!*Ahem*Molly rushes over to her neighbor, Doctor John Moore, for advice on how to shed those extra pounds. (Thus the "Melting" of the title.) As she starts to lose weight, she also starts to lose that excess baggage she's been carrying around and sees the world with fresh eyes. She also sees Judge Wade, the handsome unmarried man who seems to have just seen her as well. Then there's always her flirtatious cousin, Tom Pollard, who's the first to notice that Molly is slowly coming out of her mourning and back into the world. But we all know that it's Doc John and his precocious son Billy that Molly really needs to hook up with, if only these two adult would get their heads on straight and admit their feelings.

He had lost himself for a while the day before, and ran across the field through a heavy fire until he was on the edge of the broken German lines. His shoes and leggings were soggy from the rain-soaked dead grass and the stream he had waded twice. He was winded and in no condition for a fight when he met suddenly and violently an enormous German soldier just coming round the end of a hedge. Simpich regarded him as one of the biggest men he ever had seen, and to make matters desperate, Simpich's rifle was empty. He had been firing it so rapidly that it was hot and the breach block had jammed. He could not eject the empty cartridge and put another in the chamber.He lunged at the German with his fixed bayonet, but Fritz went back like a dancer, and came forward again with a fancy stroke which Simpich had learned at Doniphan. He also had learned how to parry it, and a fine bayonet duel was on. In the cold autumn rain on the open field, the two lone representatives of the opposing armies fought.
